There are currently 31 million more men than women in China. Even though the one child policy was scrapped in 2016 after being in place for 36 years, there are still 110 males to 100 females being born in China.

China is already dealing with a rapidly ageing population and it seems now men in China will have a much harder time getting married as there simply aren’t enough women to go around. The birth rate is currently 1.28 and given it’s current trajectory, will probably continue to go down.

It’s possible Chinese men could go down the “passport bro” route, however they are typically under a lot more pressure to marry someone from a similarly affluent family who shares their values and culture.

One way China seems to be dealing with this is by putting a huge amount of pressure on young women to marry. An unmarried woman over the age of 25 is considered a “left behind” woman. However, they also have one of the highest divorce rates in the world.

It’s an interesting discussion as we often discuss the West as having the issue with high divorce rates and low birth rates but I haven’t seen much discussion around China.
