We have all heard about the divorce rates.

But what about the rate of married couples that genuinely love each other?

I don't have any hard data but I've known a lot of couples that have been married for a long time and I'm pretty sure many of them stay out of convenience. After a certain age it's just terribly inconvenient to go through divorce and start over again. For women this starts at around menopause when finding a new guy becomes too much of a hassle. For men, it's always like this. Men would rather cheat than divorce.

Lets look at these older married couples I know:

1) Guy (53M) cheats on his wife (54F). They have two kids together and it's too inconvenient to divorce.

2) Guy (54M) cheats on his wife (55F) and has a very blatant affair. The woman at some point even found a woman's cologne hidden and she thought it would be a gift for her. He never gave her that gift. (Probably because it was for the other chick).

3) Guy (53M) and woman (49F). They finally got a divorce after 20 years of a clearly loveless marriage.

4) Guy (55M) and woman (50F). The guy is controlling and borderline abusive. The woman even feared for her life at some point. Strangely enough, they still seem to have a closer and more loving relationship than all the others I mentioned.

And all of these people I mentioned are professional, white collar types. It tends to be worse for the lower classes. I'm telling you now the percentage of long-term married couples where there's love, no long-term affairs, no abuse is probably 10% at most.

And that's natural. Marriage was very about eternal love. It was about two families combining their assets. The sooner you accept this, the sooner you'll abandon the unrealistic expectations.
