I had a friend who asked her boyfriend to marry her. They were married for 10 years. They both had their issues but he was simply a noodle spine. He also didn't have a relationship with his kids because his ex's "made it too hard" - which I didn't believe for a moment. My friend eventually found his adult kids on facebook and reunited them - he couldn't even be bothered to get in touch with his kids when they hit 18. Red flags all over the place.
Contrast this with another male friend of mine who's crazy ex wife told one of their kids he was in prison and wouldn't allow visitations (he was not in prison), or just didn't show up to court dates. It went on for over 7 years and he fought for his kids every day and eventually he got custody of them both.

Oh trust me, I've seen it. I got super confused in the middle of the book because there was so much backstory and about 50 plots going on at once involving 700 different characters with weird French names. That video helped me keep track of it all in my head.
There's a whole 3-page story about this cardinal that has a ring with a lion on it, and when the cardinal is wearing the ring and he shakes someone's hand, the lion bites them with poison and the person dies a day later. That's a small part of that story, which itself is a very small part of the whole book, but it stood out to me due to its strangeness.
It's an amazing book. Not very FDS-y though!

To be fair, I could've found you a decent ring at that price point at the department store where I was jewelry manager. Discontinued design + a coupon. The markup at jewelry stores is insane. The same few manufacturers make the house brands for several large chains of jewelry stores. I once perfectly matched a wedding band to an engagement ring from Jared, for example. (And these loons came in at 11am & the wedding was at 1pm. No pressure there. 🙄) We had the same stuff as actual jewelry stores but our margins were so that we eventually slashed prices close to wholesale to rotate out old stock while major jewelry stores don't.
The setting is usually the part that causes issues. Just avoid styles where the stones stick up in favor of bezel or halo type settings. Diamonds are great because of their hardness on the Mohs scale but other stones like white sapphires are almost as hard & much less expensive.
I agree that a lot of people aren't realistic about jewelry, though. I'm on a crystal/stone FB group & the # of folks wanting an opal or something as an engagement ring. Yikes. It'll break in half after a month of daily wear. And with men like this, yeah, the cost is going to be a litmus test of sorts.

Yup! Diamonds are a 10 on the Mohs scale; Moissanite a 9.5; rubies & sapphires a 9; emeralds 7.5-8. Opals are 5.5-6.5. 😱 Which doesn't sound terrible until you take into account the Mohs Scale is logarithmic. So even +/- 1 is a substantial difference. And there are other factors like cleaving tendencies, whether or not the stone can be submerged in water without damage, etc, to take into account. The stones that are traditionally used in bridal jewelry (and regular jewelry) did come to be the standard in part due to their durability.
When couples came in set on an opal or other soft stone I sometimes suggested a necklace instead of a ring. Most people aren't big on that idea, though. The other issue is that opals can't get wet. I suppose if you were a really careful person who had a desk job & was super diligent about removing your rings every time you washed your hands, cooked, cleaned, worked out, you could potentially keep an opal ring in one piece. That isn't most of us, though.
Moissanite is definitely hard enough to be a good choice for bridal jewelry. It will have more fire & flash than a diamond as it is a double refracting stone while diamonds are single refracting. Some other factors to consider:
1) designers are getting away from the big ole boulder solitaire sitting up a mile high in a prong setting. We stocked some. No one bought them. Women in the medical field avoid them like the plague because they shred latex gloves. Designs featuring a large center stone in a low-profile setting, designs with a trio of center stones, halo settings, or featuring intricate metal work covered in pave were way more popular.
2) I'm a cheerleader for lab created stones. They're chemically identical to their mined counterparts & probably a better choice from an environmental standpoint. Even the big South Africa based wholesaler in Washington, DC is selling lab created diamonds now. They're a fraction of the cost of mined stones & usually higher quality because the process is controlled. Certain stones are almost always lab created now. My favorite is Alexanderite. It's been 50+ years since any naturally occuring Alexanderite has been discovered. Either you pay a fortune for an antique piece or you buy lab created.
3) Always go to the store & look at as many of the same piece as they have in stock. There's multiple variables involved in cutting stones. At Xmas we'd get like 15 pairs of the same 1 carat diamond studs. Some would look grey. (I'd send them back.) Most were nice enough. 1 or 2 would be like holy crap, those earrings are FIRE, those can't be real where's my diamond tester. 🤣
4) Metal is important, too. Silver scratches & costs more to resize or repair than buying new. Gold plate is nice but can't be resized without leaving a mismatched area. Most jewelers can work gold & silver. White gold is the easiest. Most can't work platinum (very high melting point) or the trendy metals for men's rings like titanium or tungsten (extremely hard). Fun fact - tungsten rings will shatter from a blow with the right combo of force & angle. I've had a customer whose tungsten ring probably saved his finger from amputation in a table saw at work. I've also had a customer whose tungsten band shattered when he bumped his hand on a granite counter while washing dishes.

Eta: I ❤❤ me some colored diamonds, too! Black, chocolate, smoke, blue, pink, yellow, even olive green. Good quality mined blue, pink, yellow & green diamonds are heart-stopping $$$$ . But lab created are quite reasonable.

As a tangent, most people who've been married a while do end up replacing their rings no matter how expensive they were. Personal style changes, general trends change.( I cannot begin to describe how dated a marquise cut solitaire set in plain yellow gold looks: Hello, the 1980's called... ) People's ring size changes beyond the range in which a jeweler can do a quality resizing. Or their ring falls off in the ocean or something.
Long story short, if you love that $150 ring & aren't getting engaged to a passive aggressive psycho like this poor woman's fiance, don't be afraid to buy it. Otoh, if you think you might be getting engaged to a passive aggressive psycho, definitely don't go for the $150 ring.

It's common in the US. I used to be the jewelry manager at a department store. People did it all the time. Especially around Xmas or V Day. I sold my rings when I got divorced 10 years ago. I would not like those rings now. My style & tastes have changed. Most large jewelry stores offer trade ins (heavily stacked in their favor, naturally). Standing in Tiffany's once waiting for a necklace to be cleaned I overheard the sales guy telling another dude shopping (not cheap) engagement rings, "yeah, and when you're ready to trade it up in a few years you get [x percent] towards the new ring.
This is an area where I simply deviate from the FDS convention & I'm not sorry about it. I've shopped a spectacular J Stern 18k gold/ black diamond ring purchased for $6k from Neiman Marcus just 2 months earlier around to every big jeweler in the metro area before finally accepting $400 for it from a local jeweler who was an acquaintance, knew about the divorce, & kicked little extra to me to be kind. The big, fancy guys were offering $225. I've helped our LP department with reports for court cases & seen how $195 earrings cost < $12 wholesale. The band broke on my SO's fancy $$$ watch & can't be repaired; the company doesn't make replacement pins 🙄 . Meanwhile, his 20 year old Casio G Shock that he bashed to hell & back in the line of duty is still going strong.
So, with all that in mind, I'll pay for precious metal. It makes the piece last longer. Only 14 karat. There isn't enough value add with 18k. Gemstones have no value unless they are approaching "international auction importance". There are better diamonds on your nail file than on most diamond jewelry you're paying thousands for. I won't buy from big famous stores. Instead, I shop antique/vintage and indie artisans. If I remarried I might spend $3k on something really spectacular like a Padaparasha Sapphire or Tanzanite or old mined Alexanderite. Not budging over $3k. I'd rather he bought me a sport horse prospect where my ROI would actually be significant.
It's perfectly fine not to agree & have different priorities. I just disagree with bashing a "cheap" ring as a POS with no knowledge of what kind of stores we're talking. I could & did find for my customers solid gold rings at that price point that would outlast most marriages. And that looked good enough that people usually mistook them for low to medium end Vera Wang.

Let’s think of all the scenarios:
1) he’s purposely bating her to break up so she looks like the bad guy.
2) he’s testing her before he gives her the real ring. (If you have to test the person you’re proposing to, then you have serious issues.)
3) he’s a clueless romantic. (Who’s also an idiot who can’t think about time, place, and fancies himself knowledgeable about material properties without any research—what lack of forethought. Is she going to have to do the thinking for him when he decides to superglue the shelf to the wall? Can he even do housework? Come on, unsealed wood with plastic (rhinestones) superglued on top? Those cheap materials sell for a few dollars for a reason. They don’t last. That’s why rhinestones are used in nail art. Ineptitude isn’t an endearing quality in a partner you’re putting your trust in to make emergency medical decisions and being your medical advocate when you’ve suffered pregnancy complications and can’t consent and advocate for yourself.)
All 3 scenarios are red flags. Get out of there.

I was in a situation kind of like this but it was a male friend. He makes good money and splurges large amounts on his friends (male and female friends alike) pretty often. A couple months ago I organized a birthday party for him by myself and got him an expensive gift. He had been going through a hard time so it meant a lot to him that I spent so much time and effort to give him a good day. Flash forward to this month, on my birthday, he rushed together a package of worthless junk and a dirty stuffed animal that looked like it was from a second hand store. We're not friends anymore lmao.
There were a lot of other issues not including the blatant audacity I described above, he had been demanding a LOT of emotional labor from me, I was basically his free therapist. I feel so much better without all that constant negativity in my life. I really shouldn't have stayed friends with him that long, but I will know better next time. Men are so often unworthy of our time and energy.

Someone pondered if woodworking might be his hobby. I can think of one type of “wood” that would disintegrate upon contact with water. MDF board. It’s cheap, man made, and held together by bonding solution. It’s what cheap furniture is made out of.

I think it's unvarnished so the water will damage it and break it down over time. Although I dont know how you could be skilled enough with wood to make a tiny carved ring but not know to use finishing. But then there's a lot about this post I cant wrap my head around.

lol, I recently went to one of the jewellers in my area with a friend who wanted a custom necklace made. He showed us this fabulous opal engagement ring a man had commissioned for his fiance - the man had designed it with the jeweler, and then had it made professionally with good materials and the stones of his choice. That's how this whole, 'custom ring' thing is supposed to go. Not fucking arts and crafting it in the garage.

I think I would much prefer a homemade ring over a shop bought one... as long as the person making it had the required level of skill. I think this dude must have watched a video of a similar ring being made and thought it would be easier to make something really special and different.
I'm waiting to see her update after she tells him she can't wear it. If I were him I'd have already bought the original ring as a back up but maybe he is a few spanners short of a tool kit if he thought untreated wood and superglued rhinestones would make a wearable ring.

The rhinestones falling off had me in tears, not gonna lie lol. Did he use Elmers on paper for this ring... she’s not even worth Krazy glue?!?
When I was dating my husband and we talked marriage 6 months in, I told him I expected nothing short of a ring that cost 7k. That ring is a promise to me, and an investment in saying our marriage will work, that he truly believes that I’m the one he wants to go on the journey with. 9 months in he asked me to pick out ring styles I like and email them to him, because I also told him theirs no point in getting me a 7k ring that I hate. Exactly 1 year into the relationship he proposed with a 10k and some change ring that’s perfect for me.
A lot of women low ball their engagement ring because they don’t want to be seen as a gold digger / greedy, then end up with with a ring pop that melts when they wash there hands. A HVM will be proud to invest in a beautiful piece of jewelry for the woman he loves, because they understand that she’s the one wearing it for LIFE, and they also take pride in seeing it on her hand and the commitment to each other it represents. I know expensive rings aren’t for everyone, but if a man isn’t willing to get you exactly what you want in a ring at you’re agreed upon price point, he’s not the one. I honestly think men should have no say in the engagement ring (price or design), but that’s a different post for a different day lol.
