You see it all the time here on Reddit. Men complain and whine that they never receive compliments. “I was complimented once two months ago and still riding on that high”, they exclaim.

The issue here is that men don’t want compliments from other men. They want women to do all the emotional labour and coddling. They want women to tell them what a good little boy they are.

I don’t compliment men (unless I have a close & meaningful relationship with them, such as my bf) for the following reasons:

  • For my own safety. If I compliment a man I don’t know how he’ll respond to this information. One time I made the grave mistake of smiling at a guy at a park while waiting for friends and he literally followed me around for 15 minutes. I felt so scared but luckily my friends joined me soon thereafter. That was just a smile so I dread to think how he’d react to a compliment. The point here is that I don’t want to take my chances with a creepy guy who threatens my safety so I’m better off not complimenting men at all. My survival trumps your ego.

  • If I compliment a man there’s a very high chance he’ll think I’m attracted to him. Men cannot grasp the idea that you shouldn’t solely compliment the people you’re trying to fuck. So unfortunately a simple compliment might make him believe that I want to have sex and the pestering begins. I don’t want any guy to think I want to fuck him simply because I gave a compliment. Studies have shown that men already rate themselves higher than they actually are so I don’t want to contribute to this further.

  • The best compliments are genuine and unique to the person. Men are entirely uninteresting to look at and they have the same, boring personalities. It’s very challenging to think of a compliment when they’re all like this. On the other hand, there’s lots I can compliment women on. Every woman has her own unique traits, success and beauty so it’s very easy to compliment them on this.

  • You’re not entitled to compliments. End of story.

Instead of bullying women into coddling your fragile egos, men should try connecting with other men on a deeper level. I understand that they fear being perceived as gay if they compliment each other (or receive compliments) but that’s not our problem. You have created this society so it’s YOUR fault that you don’t get compliments. Stop blaming women for the very world you created in which you’re unable to express yourself freely to other men.
