This clearly isn't a first date, but rather a date for a couple who have been in a relationship with each other for a while.

Judging by some of the comments here, I'm to understand that drive-ins are a big no-no? And liking drive-in theaters is a sign of being a LVM or a LVW? Lmao get a grip people. This is a couple who went to a drive-in movie, and instead of taking their own car and buying concessions, the rented a truck and brought their own food and blankets in order to be more comfortable.

I see people here orgasmically squealing over a guy buying some grocery store flowers and chocolate that's a step above Hershey's, but planning out a date with a rented truck, blankets, and outside food for his long-time girlfriend is horrible?

Honestly, context matters. For example, if you've been mentioning the entire pandemic how much you miss going to the movies and then your boyfriend surprises you with this, I think it's high value.

There is space to lay down and relax, non-concession pizza and lots of blankets. Whoever arranged this date knew how to optimize the drive in experience and assuming this was during lockdown they took steps to have as safe an experience at the movies as possible. As an avowed pizza geek who also is a movie nerd the chance to have a night of relative normalcy would be much welcomed. I was married to a chef so dinners out at great places are a bare minimum for me as far as dating but I’ll be good and goddamned before I’m sitting down in any restaurant any time soon. It’s high value to me do the best with what you have and right now we have a pandemic.

I like to think of FDS as not just for new relationships. It's the standard we keep with ourselves and our partners always.

Until Covid I didn't have a tv for 4 years, now I'm all over it (for now hopefully). Not even a big YouTube or video clip person. I'd watch maybe 2-3 shows a year. Play a game on PC once every year or so.

But movie theaters?? That WAS my TV. I had Movie Pass before they were known. AMC Pass too. I had the chance to see movies 2-4 times a month as that was my haven to shut out everything and even finally relax.

My partner tho, dislikes most movies and the theatres. His idea of romance is the whole wine and dine, Bed and Breakfast, flowers, etc. While nice, and I will never discourage it, I would love a date like this more.

For a first date, doing the standard romance dates are fine. But being a HVM doesn't mean they keep doing only that. At some point I think it becomes they are doing what they think is HV, and what they think you want, instead of what you actually want.

Set and make you own standards. In the vetting process the routine romance is fine, and as long as you know it isn't pick me thinking or lowering your standards, non traditional dates are fine later.

I'm not mad at this. Unless this was one in a string of sh*tty dates, there aren't a lot of options during COVID. I'm one of those people who will not eat in any restaurant right now. All of my dates have been outdoors.

I think this COULD be a HVM date - if you mentioned how much you miss movies, but all the theaters are closed during the pandemic (only drive-ins are open near me). If you miss dressing up to go out, but everything is closed except take out (my area, still!!). If your favorite food is pizza. I can see this being a really thoughtful date.

Like, in the time of covid, we have to make our own rules and what is/isn't acceptable. In a long lasting relationship, you aren't going to be eating caviar and drinking champagne all the time (or maybe you do, not judging - do your thing!).

This is a bad first date, but not a bad 50th date and it might even be a GOOD 50th date depending on the circumstances.

These dates are more expensive than you realize.

$50 for the tickets, $20-30 for drinks popcorn and snacks, plus dinner if you get it before.

If you need to rent the truck that's even more expensive.

My husband took me to a drive-in on Saturday to see a movie. Let me tell you: drive-ins suck. The popcorn was stale, the nachos were cold, and we found out that we can’t watch movies without subtitles anymore thanks to only watching tv in our house all year. Even the cuddling in the car was only okay because of the center console poking into his side. You gotta have a bench seat to really enjoy the old fashioned snuggling.

I really came here just to slander drive-ins. I get the nostalgia factor, but the reality was so disappointing 😭😭😭
