I know personally two women who got blood clots directly related to birth control.

I went on BC for 3 years starting at 18 and I didnt know much about it. I was nauseous every single morning, but for some reason didnt think it was the BC and it affected my work. I was depressed and suicidal. The depression still lasts to this day.

The hormones caused terrible hormonal acne I dealt with for over 10 years which made my depression worse and the only way to cure it was accutane which has now given me life long symptoms like dry eyes and joint pain and exhaustion. Because I am a woman doctors dont believe there is anything wrong with me, I mean the blood tests are perfect so I must be making it up right? It's just anxiety causing my legs muscles to feel weak every minute of the day.

Edit: this is why when a man dares to say that a condom makes his 2 minutes of sex "uncomfortable" I will laugh in his face. Wow, sure wish I could choose 2 minutes of reduced pleasure in sex to prevent pregnancy then have my literal life and health permanently changed.

-Birth control pills need to be renamed to female hormonal medication or female menstruation regulator. They have a side effect of pregnancy prevention, it's none of men's business what medication a woman is on or not and she can choose when and how to take it. Men need to take responsibility for their own pregnancy prevention. Men are completely in control of where their sperm goes and if you put your sperm into a uterus then have the stupidity to say you were "baby trapped" or have no reproductive control you are lacking in intelligence.

I know it works for some, but for me, it was awful. Tried the patch and a few different pill brands. I got debilitating anxiety and depression for the first time in my life, my boobs hurt all the time, and I was always irritable. My boyfriend at the time (bye to LVM!) was mad when I went off birth control and insisted I go back on it OR that we go without a condom and just "buy plan B" and he'd pay. Men, PLAN B IS NOT BIRTH CONTROL. It also comes with side effects (bleeding, pain, cramps, fucked up cycle, hormone changes) and is NOT 100% EFFECTIVE EITHER. She can still get pregnant even if she's taken an emergency contraceptive!!! I have friends who were way worse on birth control and some stopped having periods completely (even after bc), became infertile, or became pregnant anyways. Some even became suicidal. This post is 100% spot on and I will never go back on birth control. Use a condom or don't fuck me, I really don't care.

Some of them would rather just finish inside you, and risk letting you suffer through an abortion alone, than wear one. All because it “feels” better. Combination pills (the most popular kind) made me have extreme pms symptoms, period pain, and made my acne worse. I kept trying different ones and they all sucked for me.

Depo shot seemed wonderful. No period. No side effects. Turns out it leeched calcium out of my bones causing bilateral stress fractures in my LEGS when I was in basic training. I recuperated but it was years of recovery and some permanent damage/pain. Twenty years later and I sometimes feel pain at the fracture sites and some arthritis when the barometer drops. I can literally tell you if rain is in the forecast.

Progestin only pills were a dream for me for years. No side effects. Less acne. No pms. No period. Smokers can't use them because of the risk of blood clots. The cons were they had to be taken at the same time every day to be effective. And I got switched to generic because the name brand got exponentially more expensive. And the pharmacies kept switching my brands. With generic, I started getting my period every month. The pain was awful for two days. Just motrin and a heating pad and me curled up in a ball trying not to cry. But I got used to it. It was better than my period off pills. But after having a baby my period was coming on every week or so and every single time I had sex I would bleed for several days. I got sick of it and stopped bc. Also after a baby and entering my 30s, my periods are rarely painful or heavy.

I went off bc for a year and it was the best of my life. Absolutely regular periods that were so light and short they were almost non existent. THANK YOU OLD AGE! And then I had an accidental pregnancy because I didn't use a condom and thought I was safe. My guess is back to back ovulation, dropping two eggs. Fraternal twins run heavy in my family.

I went for the implant next because the IUD scares the shit out of me for many reasons. Even my bf didn't want me on it. I chose the implant because it is progestin only just like depo and the mini pill. And it lasts 3-4 years. The only side effect is almost unlivable. My period wants to come every other week for 7-10 days. I dealt with it for nine months hoping it would stop. It didn't. My period was all over the fucking place. I was about to pay the money to have it removed when I decided to try herbal supplements that had worked to regulate my hormones in the past. One didn't work but one did. That stuff is called MACA. My period now either comes on time or is a little late. But as soon as I feel like spending the money, I am going to have it removed and switch to condoms only. I don't want a surgery so I don't want sterilization. Ectopic pregnancy scares me too and that is possible even with permanent sterilization. I figure menopause will be here in 5-10 years. I can't wait! I will wait on nature to take me out of the running.

BC straight up ruined my life. And I only went on it because I got into a serious relationship at 17 and knew I was gonna start having sex and of course it was my responsibility to prevent pregnancy even though it wouldnt be possible without 50% of his participation and he took 0% of the responsibility. I didnt question it at the time because of course I had no consciousness of this inequality. I wasn't informed of any chronic side effects, just potential nausea, weight gain, dizziness, all the acute stuff that would easily be rid of if I quit BC. I ended up on it for FIVE YEARS when I finally noticed that I'd slowly been losing my hair. This is concerning for anyone but as someone with body dysmorphic disorder (& a recovered anorexic), this was extremely concerning due to my severe body image issues and insecurities. I quickly quit the BC which caused me to experience a rebound hormonal surge in androgens - this happens every time a woman quits BC because the pill suppresses our androgens. The androgen surge caused me to break out in insane hormonal acne for the first time in my life (my skin was literally the only thing I had previously liked about myself because at least it was clear) while also being diagnosed with androgenic alopecia. I was 22. I'm 26 now and still using Rogaine for it. I have to use it for the rest of my life and it only helps a little, I'm still slowly balding. You can imagine what type of number that does on my self esteem. I had to wear a wig for a while when I first got off BC, it was that bad. I'm also still dealing with the acne. To make things even better, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism after coming off the pill. Another chronic condition to deal with. I got better with thyroid hormones, but again, this is lifelong and requires chronic medication and constant monitoring. Thyroid disorders are associated with HBC use because it affects thyroid binding hormones. I was also diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, sjogrens syndrome, after coming off BC. I dont think that was a coincidence. I basically became super ill after I quit it and being in the chronic illness community, there are many stories like mine. I warn women as much as I can. Besides the feminist ethics of it, it's just not worth the potential side effects. I'm glad we have the 'choice' but it's handed out like candy. I was never warned of any of this. I regret going on it more than anything in my fucking life. I'm suicidal most days because of how much the hair loss, acne, and chronic illness has affected my mental wellbeing. I'm bedridden most of the time due to the chronic physical illnesses and will prob have to apply for disability. I really don't feel I have a reason to live. Meanwhile my ex boyfriend is happy and carefree with a new younger girlfriend.

Paragard IUD gave me horrific cramps for 7-9 days prior to bleeding, tripled the length of bleeding from 2-3 days to 6-9 days, and caused continued spotting for 4-6 days after bleeding ended. So basically in an entire month I was lucky to get a single normal week.

Dear Male Lurkers: Not only is plan B not 100%, it's not even well-tested in women over a certain weight/BMI (with limits to both- a woman my height would only need to be technically overweight by BMI to violate the weight limit).

Is plan B worth trying if you genuinely need it by accident? Yeah, probably, unless you can't get the money inside the time limit.

Is it reliable birth control? No more than a fire extinguisher is a reliable way to keep your dinner from burning.

I agree-- I had nothing but bad experiences with all hormonal BC I was on. Any of the pills, regardless of how "low dose" they were, gave me horrendous breakthrough bleeding, bloating, weight gain, exacerbated acne. The IUD seemed to make my skin go berserk and I'd occasionally get lightheaded because somehow it kept tapping on a nerve. Actually, I literally blacked out right after I had the thing put in-- I wound up being sent to the ER and ended up paying an $800 ambulance bill.
No matter what GYN I was seeing, my concerns were completely blown off.

I was going to get married next year. Realize now he was a super LVM. But anyway he decided I needed to go on BC to make it easier. I started coming to my senses and calling him out on a bunch of crap and he zipped off. It's for the best, but I've stayed on BC anyway. It's KILLED my sex drive, but I don't need it right now so that's not been a down side for me at least. Also cleared up my acne and made my periods regular, light and I can skip if I want. However, my Doctor didn't mention all these other side effects and I'm starting to rethink... Blood clots, yes. Mood changes, increased chance of depression. yes. Decreased sense of smell? No. Changing your ability to evaluate potential matches? No. Basically everything on that list is news to me and I'm wondering if the few benefits I'm having are worth all those risks.

I actually didn't have a lot of terrible side effects on the surface, but its hard to say since I was on it for so long. My side effects were more emotional but in a subtle way.

I didn't have a period for many years. Now I seriously believe being a woman and having a menstrual cycle is a spiritual experience. It allows us to shed our repressed emotions, gets us in touch with the natural cycles of the universe/nature (we are meant to be synced to the moon, healers to the "blood moon" - this is ancient knowledge and why the first calendars were 28 days). Having a period is a time where we can get truly in touch with the present moment as well as being selfish with our wombs. I used to have period sex but no more, it's a sacred time for me to heal and be with myself.

After getting off of it it was literally like withdrawing from drugs. I had so much emotional buildup I didn't know what to do with it. It dampened my intuition for so long I felt like I was invincible and I had never really felt much attraction to men and was completely disassociated. I suddenly felt incredibly vulnerable, but this is how its been my whole life and I repressed it. I became hyperaware of my own death, my place in the universe, and what I want to do with the rest of my days. I was merely existing before.

I was able to learn about how to actually heal my hormonal problems with things like a healthy diet, exercise, stress management, supplements, instead of putting a bandaid over them. I think if I hadn't gotten on birth control at such a young age (for acne! wtf) I would have not dealt with as many emotional problems because my emotions would have naturally been expressed. Instead I was given labels that didn't actually solve my problem and no one even fucking asked me. I had a lot of childhood trauma of course my hormones were out of whack I have cptsd!!! And making me numb only led to making worse decisions.

I seriously encourage anyone who feels this way to get off birth control. There hasn't even been enough studies on the long term effects were basically guinea pigs right now for the convenience of males. It's hard to withdrawal and literally an addiction because your body is used to the hormones but if you can get through to the other side, it's so worth it. I wish I never got on it to begin with.

Birth control nearly made me infertile. Besides getting extreme thyroid issues and now metabolism and depression, i got PCOS and fertility issues. I had to do different kinds of therapies to bring my body back to what it was before HBC. It took me 4 years and several miscarriages to get pregnant. I would never ever take HBC again. Vasectomies are completely doable for most males. Dont want children? Get a vasectomy.

I had the bilateral salpingectomy and because of my fear of pregnancy I still want sex with a sterile man. I mean I would rather he not wear a condom ( assuming he was medically cleared of STIs) but I have always been with non sterile men as many men don’t become sterile and many men do not get the full panel (14 I believe it is STIs).

There was this guy I was talking to months back who said I should get on BC. I thought that was weird and inappropriate to ask since we were not there yet. Still, I considered the suggestion, but made clear that whether or not I was using BC, he would be wearing a condom. He told me “you don’t know how I do things. I want to shoot the club up, every corner” Horrified, I was like why on earth would i let you do that, we’re not in a relationship. He had already relayed his pregnancy fears and at that point I expressed my STD concerns and how I absolutely would not NOT use a condom with someone who I had no assurance of commitment.

This man not only told me he had a child on the way from his “bitter ex wife who can’t let go” but that he already had a “trap baby” by her and two OTHER women trapped him with babies. You mean to tell me you have FOUR TRAP BABIES by THREE different women?! And then expect ME to accept your radioactive sperm inside MY body!?! We both turned each other off after that convo. I’m not sure why on earth telling me the motherS of his childREN trapping him would entice me to no condom use. We stopped talking after that conversation.

Two weeks later, he showed off wedding photos on IG to some completely new woman. My mouth dropped. I just thanked GOD that I had enough sense to put the brakes on anything with that man.

I was on HBC for four years. One day I started bleeding so much that I had to go to the ER. I had developed Growths in my uterus that my dr wanted to perform surgery to remove. I was so upset and freaked out. I stopped taking the BC right away. Luckily my body was able to correct it self naturally after I stopped taking that crap! I will never ever take HBC again. I could have lost my fertility or my life. Any man who has a problem with that is not going to be dating me. Luckily it weeds out assholes and fuckboys :)

The "funniest" of this all is when you have doctors pressuring to start on HBC just because you are 12 and you period started. Even though you say that you're sexually active. You, know, just in case (like condoms are not a much better option for just in case).

Or then later on in life, when you are struggling to get out of an abusive relationship to find out that you end up pregnant of the turd that you stupidly started dating year ago and, now try to dump. Only to travel 700 Km to the only hospital that as doctors that perform abortion (because) in other hospitals they were conscientious objectors (even though in my country it is legal - I still had to deal with this shit).

To get to the female doctor to ask me for the father and if he knew - or straight ask me if I knew who was the father. Fucking shitty person I was 23 trying to dodge a f.... bullet that beat me up and raped me while in a relationship and with me having no family that support me. Actually, I'm sure if I ever was to tell me I would have to keep it and the relationship as well - because I started something I should finish). No friends and, nevermind go to the police because, this was my ex.
So yeah in the end she called me stupid and retarded for never take HBC. Even though, I've naturally have extremely high cholesterol levels and, family history of strokes in both sides with people as young as 30. I did had my abortion 3 days later (days that I had to wait to think about it ....) and, then they end up to put an HBC implant on me without telling me in advance, without info. They just appeared with it all the equipment said - this is an HBC implant works for 3 years, ok. If your period stops - that is normal. If goes in continuo - that's normal. You will feel pain in your harm for 2 weeks and possibly increase weight. - At this point I was in a very bad state and I don't remember to give consent.

I don't think this is a single case - there was a older woman there seemly having the same look of utter lost and confusion.
So yeah so funny that doctor, that should be informed, seem to have the same view as uninformed men that just want to raw penis ppl around.

I stopped taking birth control this past week! Yay!! Sad that I started it a few years ago because I felt I couldn’t trust guys to keep condoms on. Here’s to better enforcing my boundaries in 2020.

Yup I got pregnant with an IUD and on the pill. Thankfully I was able to get abortions and not be tied to an abusive bf forever.

Severe weight gain I shot up to over 300 lbs in my teens when forced onto the shot. I still haven’t managed to get to my original size and it’s been years later, leading me to believe it messed with my metabolism as well. Loss of sex drive. Shortness of breath fatigue.

Preach, sister!!! Luckily for me I only enjoy the same gender, so I don’t have the problems of birth control medications, but I do like the side effect of no menstrual cycles, so I heard all my life. In my pre-outed period of life, I had men and no bc. But I always demanded rubbers. As such some have left the scene literally minutes before the deed. Yeah that sucked...As for the lecture of OP, it is my experience that it is not a gender issue, but an attitude issue.

Birth control is not 100% effective nor will it ever be!

It's important to note that condoms are not either. Me and my boyfriend use both.

If you take ZERO responsibility for controlling your fertility, then you get to make 0% of the decision if she becomes pregnant, in addition to the fact that you carry ZERO of the physical risk of pregnancy OR abortion. And since you carry ZERO of the side effects of birth control, you get to make 0% of the decision on what we take!

Let's not encourage men to use condoms just as an excuse not to pay child support though.

I know im late but I wanted to add short term memory issues to this. I got BC first when I was around 13 and my grades dropped because I got super scatter brained. It improved as soon as I stopped taking them a few months later.
