Accurate indeed.

Talked with a girl I knew was a self-proclaimed feminist. Paraphrasing here:

Girl: morals are relative, etc..
Me: everything?
Girl: Ya.
Me: What about the widespread practice in Africa of female circumcision?
Girl: That's just wrong!
Me: But you said everything is relative.
Girl: No, but that's just wrong. You know it's wrong yourself. There's no good reason for it and it's mutilation and part of a pattern of abuse towards women. Do you not know that it's not OK to sexually abuse women?
Me: So what about male circumcision?
Girl: tssschh, you're such an asshole.

She then apparently bad-mouthed me to her friends

People like that aren't worth interacting with

[–]redfoot62 40 points41 points42 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Yet they’re so plentiful you’d seemingly go months without interacting with people if you did that.

[–]jason2306 18 points19 points20 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If that's true it's still better than the alternative

[–]kartu3 -3 points-2 points-1 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Bullshit.

[–]Efreshwater5 14 points15 points16 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Don't worry... even if you talk to them, you're still not interacting with them. Interacting implies having a reciprocal effect on something. There's nothing going in over there... only regurgitated platitudes out.

Same level of interaction as a septic tank.

[–]allSmallThings 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Wrong. People like that need to be productively engaged.

Is is the responsibility of every good adult to shape the community, and that means healthy engagement, especially with people who are harming our society.

You can't save everybody

[–]allSmallThings 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If everyone engages productivity we still have hope.

She then apparently bad-mouthed me to her friends

Sounds about right.

Ben Shapiro recently gave a guide on how/when/why debate leftists. One of the things he says , or at least implies heavily , is to never engage unless you have a somewhat neutral audience. Your goal is to demonstrate that the leftist is wrong and moronic, the leftist himself will always reject logic and reason.

[–]Igot2phonez 8 points9 points10 points 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

the leftist himself will always reject logic and reason.

Ben Shapiro is wrong though. You need to stop treating the left as a monolith. Conservatives don’t have a monopoly on reason and logic.

[–]Arthas_Greyjoy2 points 8 years ago* [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

The trend does seem to be happening on the left side of the political spectrum it seems to me. The censorship, the public shaming, the whataboutisms are all very common tactics used by the Stephen Colbert-ish crowd.

[–]DigitalFlame 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Projection, projection, projection? I mean if saying that doesn't help the left vs right mindset anymore than what the original poster said. There isn't a single simple side to this that you can blame it upon.

[+]TheMythof_Feminism -14 points-13 points-12 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Ben Shapiro is wrong

Does not compute.

Actually I've seen him be wrong on one and only one thing , ever (Charlottseville incident) but aside from that, he appears to be invincible.

You need to stop treating the left as a monolith.

Your deflections are meaningless.

It's also worth noting that I almost always specify what subgroup of leftists I'm talking about (SJWs/feminists/BLM/antifa/etc.) . I only say leftists at large when the argument is broad.

Conservatives don’t have a monopoly on reason and logic.

I don't remember ever using the term "conservative".

I said on the right. Fail.

[–]Igot2phonez 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It’s not a deflection. You literally said leftists will always reject logic and I’m directly addressing that.

[+]TheMythof_Feminism -9 points-8 points-7 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You literally said leftists will always reject logic and I’m directly addressing that.

Is that what I said or is that what you wish I had said?

Here's what I actually said;

"The leftist: = "leftism". fail.

[–]Igot2phonez 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Lol you’re quote literally proves what I said. And stop saying fail. It just makes me take you even less seriously.

Most people don't think about it at all(here in America). It's just "the normal thing to do". I know I didn't. It wasn't until well after my son was born that I came across some information that caused me to open my eyes. Wish it happened sooner. I never would've allowed anyone to do that to my son.

[–]ChazMadison 32 points33 points34 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is the very same experience I had. I didn't think twice about it and now I 100% regret it.

[–]masuabie 34 points35 points36 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

If it was normal to have 3 fingers, they would cut off the 4th as a baby. "It just looks better." "Less cleaning."

I hate how they use "normal" as the excuse.

[–]bbreedy 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

But they do do this. If someone is born with an extra finger they remove it.

[–]Camachan 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But it is not routine to cut off a functioning finger on every infant. It is rare to be born with extra fingers. The correct equivalency would be if no one was born with a foreskin, but someone was every 10,000 or so births. Then, if the foreskin wasn't erogenous tissue like it is, we would find almost no one would oppose removing it.

You're talking about extra fingers, they are talking about removing one of the ones on an average hand. Big diiference.

As a woman in the US who has experienced both, WHY? How? In what way?! And not only that but I'd bet that these same women will get pissed if you say they look better with makeup on. They're shaming guys for a fucking surgery they didn't have as a child and has an insane amount of complications especially if done in adulthood... just cause their conceited self-entitled selves decide they like it better... honestly, how fucking dare they??

Besides, intact guys are usually more sensitive which is a huge turn on IMO.

My fiance is intact, our future son(s) will be intact and I give zero fucks what anyone says.

[–]Bowaustin 30 points31 points32 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I will never forgive my parents for my circumcision, I can’t wait until I finish engineering school so I can finally afford to see a doctor about foreskin restoration. Sadly that still won’t completely fix things or restore the nerves but Atleast it will let the scarring heal and restore some of the lost sensitivity.

[–]NynjaWerewulf 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]gnarlin 9 points10 points11 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]Midnight_Shade17 points 8 years ago [recovered] (4 children) | Copy Link

Yea US male here, was circumcised because that’s just the culture here. I refuse to put my future son through that.

Get this in your head.

The procedure is done without anesthesia for starters. They forcibly rip the foreskin back weeks before it’s supposed to naturally start loosening and cut it with scissors or a tool. The percent of skin they are removing from a newborn is equivalent to 3+ feet on a full grown male. Imagine having all the skin on your back removed, just straight up removed down to bone and muscle. That’s how it feels.

[–]PolishHammerMK 22 points23 points24 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Barbaric. And people have the gall to say it "looks better".

[–]bfume 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The percent of skin they are removing from a newborn is equivalent to 3+ feet on a full grown male.

hahahahahahaha... no it's not. not even close. hard to take the rest of your comment seriously like these other trolls agreeing with you

[–]NtWEdelweiss 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ehh if you take the area removed and compare it with the whole size of the body and then resize it to a full grown man. Sure you'll get 3ft+ but if you take into account that penises don't grow nearly as much as the rest of the body it's a ridiculous comparison, yes.

[–]JohnBoyAndBilly 8 points9 points10 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Well, I'm from the US, uncut, and other than the odd "hey, look at that", no girl has ever given a shit. They've all fucked me more than once, including my wife, obviously.

So no, my experience is any time you get to a point where a woman is voluntarily playing with your dick for the first time, cut or uncut, they'll happily play with it a second time.

[–]Flatline334 -2 points-1 points0 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yep, they may not prefer it but they will keep that private. It really only looks weird when soft anyway.

[–]Revoran 7 points8 points9 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"but muh religion" is not a valid reason to circumcise either.

The only valid reason is to correct a serious medical issue/abnormality.

[–]maxcorrice 12 points13 points14 points 8 years ago (18 children) | Copy Link

According to “most women” they prefer their men circumcised, because that’s what’s more important apparently

[–]InhabitantOfOddworld 30 points31 points32 points 8 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

Depends where you are. The most women thing seems to be a US phenomenon. Circumcision basically never happens in the UK outside of religious rules or medical reasons.

As such, few women even see them, let alone have an opinion or preference.

[–]shaq604 -3 points-2 points-1 points 8 years ago* (11 children) | Copy Link

Do you have stats for that?

Asking because what I've seen contradicts that

Edit: I live in the UK, not sure why I'm being downvoted for asking an honest question

[–]InhabitantOfOddworld 12 points13 points14 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

No stats as such, tried Google to no avail.

Just experiencial opinion from having been born and lived in the UK. It's not a common procedure like the US. The only person I know who's cut is indeed foreign. No women I've dated have ever expressed it as a preference.

Prevalence of circumcision

The prevalence of circumcision is the percentage of males in a given population who have been circumcised. The rates vary widely by country, from 1% in Japan, to 2% in Spain and Sweden, to 58% in the United States, to more than 80% in Muslim-majority countries. Worldwide it is estimated that 25% to 33% of males are circumcised, by various sources. It is not the current rate of newborn males who undergo neonatal circumcision, which may influence future prevalence. In 2007, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that globally, the vast majority of men who are circumcised are Muslims.

Circumcision is compulsory practice within Muslim men all over the world.

As for double standards, recently Indian supreme court banned FGM which is only practiced within a minor muslim sect. Millions of muslim boys are circumcised routinely without any botheration at all.

Also to add that circumcision is almost a taboo within Hindus in India.

And we're all entirely assuming that deliberately mutilating a baby's genitals is a matter of ignorance that one can unlearn.

Believe me, most sane people don't do that. Not saying the Americans are stupid but there are reasons their circumcision rate is higher than most countries and their women are led to believe cut dicks are better.

[–]ImmaSuckYoDick 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]InhabitantOfOddworld -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But the context is circumcision, and that's critical. They think his parents were just ignorant instead of being idiots and that's just a baseless assertion I disagree with on the basis that's it's unfounded AND you have to be an idiot to do that to an infant to begin with.

[–]Boneless_Doggo 27 points28 points29 points 8 years ago (24 children) | Copy Link

Circumcision is a barbaric form of “surgery” in which they forcibly rip the foreskin from the head of the penis months before it naturally disconnects and then cut it quickly and with minimum regard to the accuracy. All of this is done without anesthesia and is proven to cause immense and permanent pain and scarring mentally and physically. It also desensitizes the head of the penis to the point where it’s much harder to reach orgasms and they aren’t as pleasurable.

And keep in mind that this is all because some doctors claim that it keeps your penis clean of smegma which is completely retarded if you think people can’t clean their penis like they have for the past 200,000 years.

More people have died from botched circumcisions than they have from infected penises caused by smegma infections.

It's a part of Judaism. The Jews will not give up the practice even if it's outlawed. You would have to outlaw Judaism before you could eliminate circumcision.

Other points aside, backward desert religions are barbaric. You can throw Islam and Christianity in while you're at it, preferably down into Mount Doom or the Nth circle of Hell so we never have to deal with the retards who follow that shit.

[–]nugymmer 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

You could also refer to Christian or Catholic as "anti-woman" too...LOL since most anti-abortionists in the USA fall into these two religious groups.

Just because the practice occurs in Judaism doesn't mean that Judaism is wrong. Judaism is fine. In fact, they already have an alternative ceremony called Brit Shalom...instead of the conventional Brit Milah.

[–]chocoboat 16 points17 points18 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's not bad to be circumcised. It's bad to circumcise another person without their consent.

It should be a choice that every man should be able to make for himself. Circumcising infants is a barbaric outdated tradition.

And it's not harmless either... most circumcisions turn out just fine but a few babies are killed by it and others have too much cut off and suffer other problems later in life. Infant circumcision inflicts harm to people just for the sake of tradition, and denies them the right to choose for themselves.

  • Some parts of non-muslim Africa (pushed by the WHO)

In addition, there are other forms of MGM (male genital mutilation) practiced around the world.

Penile subincision has been reported performed on aboriginal minors in Australia, and among some other native peoples.

An undeveloped fetus isn't a person, but a baby is a person. A baby is not an undeveloped fetus. That's like saying a seed is a tree.

A seed certainly isn't a coffee table. And why is a vagina so magical that once you pass through it you're suddenly human? You existed before that moment but unfortunately there are those who see you as some sort of medical oddity or a growth. They've decided that, until some arbitrary point in time, you have no rights and you're part of another persons body that they can have removed if they so desire. I should do that with you. Until you suck my tires you're not allowed to eat. How's that? Maybe you feel like you should have a say in it? Maybe you feel like you're more of a person than that because you can move about and breathe on your own not being dependant on anything else or anyone? What if I broke both your legs and you were on disability all your life? Now can your mother murder you? How about you flap your wings and soar naked into space? Can you survive on your own then? At no point in it's lifecycle is a human being independent of it's environment, and there is no argument you can offer that will make me think that killing babies (or coffee tables since you think that's what they equate to and I'm taking to a madman and thud am forced to weild their own idioms) is acceptable.

Except in the case of rape (which is what 1% of all cases?) In which case I just wash my hands of the situation.

Pretty sure that covers all of your insanities and my opinions of them. If I've left out anything lemme know.

It has nothing to do with the fetus passing through the vagina, and you know it. You are just obfuscating.

[–]dazmo 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Non-secular morality is easy to define.

Humanism is a circus and Nietzsche was right about it. It's a copout, and it's cowardly.

consequentialism is just cowardice as well, allowing others to dictate your thoughts and actions for you out of fear of reprisals.

So your argument is that it's ok to kill kids because of the consequences of not killing them - which is being "forced" to raise them.

Not only is that not a moral argument in any sense, it's not even an argument. It's just passing the buck and refusing responsibility for the human life the parents created.

Since your having lots of trouble with this let's make it easier: Why is a baby not a human, and why should it have no rights?

[–]mensmod 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Why should I be expected to answer that question when you haven't defended your view? By answering your question, I would be implying that the default answer is your answer. Since you like manipulating arguments so much, how about this: I will answer that once you have proven that a fetus is a human.

Secular morality

Secular morality is the aspect of philosophy that deals with morality outside of religious traditions. Modern examples include humanism, freethinking, and most versions of consequentialism. Additional philosophies with ancient roots include those such as skepticism and virtue ethics. Greg M. Epstein also states that, "much of ancient Far Eastern thought is deeply concerned with human goodness without placing much if any stock in the importance of gods or spirits." An example is the non-denominational Kural text of Valluvar, an ancient Indian theistic poet-philosopher whose work remains secular.

My parents didn’t explain their reasons for circumcising my brother very well, and I bawled my eyes out asking them why they let the doctors do that to him. Even as a kid I understood that it was wrong, and now find it extremely unjust that people find female genital mutilation as wrong whereas circumcision is seen as acceptable. Hopefully as people identify with religious groups less and less, this unnecessary practice will come to an end.

Just make sure to post that sticky everywhere just to be safe.

Edit: Tell you what. I fully condemn any of this comic artists views that are obviously racist or promote neo nazism. But it's sad that posting a comic you like about circumcision being bad means you have to proactively state that you don't like their other comics or views or that posting a comic about circumcision means that you implicitly support their other stuff, too.

[–]mensmod 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

We live in a time where reputation matters, and we no longer have "freedom of association". We only have freedom FROM association. So once you associate yourself with someone, and that someone does something bad, your reputation is tarnished by association with them.

The only thing you can do is not associate with someone "bad", hence "freedom from association".

[–]Kuonji[S] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So once you associate yourself with someone

I do agree with the overall sentiment, for the most part, but I don't consider posting a webcomic from someone 'associating' with them. That's a very tenuous link, imo.

Obviously others do, and feel the need to proactively distance themselves, and that's fine. Just disappointing that we're at a point where this needs to be done or people feel it needs to be done.

Not really. I'm saying I personally condemn any distasteful stuff this guy has done, but don't feel the need to proclaim it to everyone before I post something that's completely unrelated as some sort of proactive shield against criticism or something. Seems like it wastes time and sets the precedent that we have to do this "just in case" for more and more people over time.

I don’t want to sound ignorant here. But I’m probably going to.

I’m a circumcised male and it’s all I’ve ever known, it hasn’t caused me any grief or handicaps that I’m aware of. In fact with the way media and the mass public portray a penis is 99percent circumcised, so it’s probably been beneficial when getting close with someone.

I understand this comic strip and the idea of consent, but But if a parent makes a decision is the best interest of the child isn’t that ok? Maybe I’m not educated enough on this particular topic I would love some insight.

Is it harmful to well his well-being? Or am I just so brainwashed by society that what I think is normal just isn’t.

Edit: A couple typos, by bad, at work.

[–]faultierchen 14 points15 points16 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Say some parents would tattoo their newborn. It's not harmful, but a permanent cosmetic change to the child's body.

What would you think about that?

[–]CreeperCooper 31 points32 points33 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You're not sounding ignorant at all.

It isn't necessary harmful physically, no. If the procedure goes right, that is. In the small chance that it goes wrong.. well, it goes bad.

There are no health benefits, either. There are people claiming that circumcision is 'cleaner'. But, in the western world, men shower very regularly. To the point that this benefit doesn't hold any merit whatsoever. Also, some research indicate that being circumcise lowers the chances of spreading/receiving std's. But again, in the western world this shouldn't really be a problem. If one has a std they should go to the doctor, get fixed up. Condoms are a thing, too. It lowers the chance, it does not remove it.

There really isn't a 'best interest' for the child when it comes to circumcision. The procedure is done for two reasons in the western world: 1. the parents just want to, make it look like daddy or 'it's normal, right?' 2. it's part of the religion/culture of the parents, something they then force onto their child. The interests of the child doesn't come into the equation at all, it's only done to please the parents.

(Unless it is of medical necessity, of course. I can't speak about circumcision in other places around the world, because I don't know to what degree men wash themselves or practice safe-sex.)

In fact with the way media and the mass public portray a penis is 99percent circumcised, so it’s probably been beneficial when getting close with someone.

I find this to be really sad, though. It's literally sexualization of scarring male genitalia. Considering that only a third of the entire world is circumcised, it's even more offending.

[–]AgentScarn475 13 points14 points15 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That was really insightful and put things into perspective, thank you for that. I suppose being conditioned to thinking it’s normal is what makes it hard to understand. But I can see the problem with health risks. This is something I’ll be looking into more from here on out.

[–][deleted] 39 points40 points41 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If your definition of 'best interest of the child' amounts to 'it didn't negatively impact me' or 'it fits in better with the social norm', then that rationale can be used to justify all sorts of plastic surgery on infants.

The medical profession's guiding principle is that above all else, they should do no harm, and every single time a circumcision is performed, they are putting that infant at risk of a negative outcome. Dozens of infants a year die from circumcision related complications. Babies have been infected with herpes by mohels performing old-school Jewish circumcisions, too. A percentage lose their entire penis, or have it mangled. Unless the medical profession can demonstrate a clear need that offsets those risks and known outcomes, there's really no justification for performing them.

And it costs a lot of men reduced sensitivity in their glans, so sex is less enjoyable than it would have been otherwise.

[–]AgentScarn475 14 points15 points16 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is something I’ve been pretty blind to my whole life, I can’t imagine making a decision out of pure ignorance thinking it’s normal and then it result in, if not death, the complete loss of function. Only to find out it was completely unnecessary. Kind of makes my stomach turn knowing there are people out there who just have to live with it.

[–]masuabie 27 points28 points29 points 8 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Or am I just so brainwashed by society that what I think is normal just isn’t.

Yes.

I too, am circumcised and don't know what it's like to not be. However, we are missing sensitive nerve endings that exist in the foreskin. There are no health benefits. It's all because of one idiot in America pushing circumcision for all to stop young boys from masturbating.

[+][deleted] -16 points-15 points-14 points 8 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

I do know what it's like. I had it done in early adulthood and can tell you, you aren't missing shit. There are health benefits to it. Don't believe me? Ask a nurse that works with elderly men. I wish my parents had been smart enough to have done it when I was a baby. That way I didn't have to try not to get a hard on with stitches in my dick. But keep pushing that narrative that you're missing out. But I'll keep correcting you and people like you.

From someone that has known both sides and refuses to let others lie about it.

[–][deleted] 22 points23 points24 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I mean, it’s not lying lol. Losing the foreskin means losing a lot of nerve endings. Nerve endings = sensitivity. Lost nerve endings = lost sensitivity. What part of this very simple situation could you possibly be disagreeing with?

[–]masuabie 15 points16 points17 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

There are health benefits to it. Don't believe me? Ask a nurse that works with elderly men.

We can ask any non-American as they are almost all uncut and somehow healthy

[–]Flatline334 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

He’s not implying being uncut makes you unhealthy.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

No it would need to be nurses in elderly dimensia unit type places. My wife works with the elderly and some of the old uncut men who can't take care of themselves get a lot of UTIs which can kill you at that age. They should have someone clean their penises better.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Dude. You're getting down voted for truth. Just like feminism, this group here will attack any fact that doesn't go along with their narrative. I agree with a lot this page posts, just not this. They literally attack their own for stating facts and personal experience.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I get it. We are talking about circumcision which is a controversial issue. The only argument in favor of it that has any merit is the one about elderly men. I'm not sure that's enough for me to do it to my own son, but it is indeed a fact.

[–]AgentScarn475 7 points8 points9 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I’m going to look into myself, I appreciate your side of things, as there may not be many people who do it later in life. I can understand the elderly who may have a harder time keeping themselves maintained. But I don’t think it’s wise to say your own personal experience out weighs the majority. Also I think one of the big points is that babies can and have died from it. And you were old enough to say “I want this” you had consent.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But if a parent makes a decision is the best interest of the child isn’t that ok?

What was in your best interest might not be in the best interest of the child.

That kid might grow up and learn a little, and find out he didn't want it and feel violated, just like a lot of other people.

it hasn’t caused me any grief or handicaps that I’m aware of.

Doctors fuck up, and this is genitals we are talking about... so I'll just throw that in there. Just cause they didn't mess up with you, doesn't mean they wouldn't mess up with him. There can always be complications. Not to mention, a lowering in sensitivity.

so it’s probably been beneficial when getting close with someone.

If a girl doesn't want your son because he still has his foreskin do you really want that kind of shallow girl with your son anyways?

this is stupid. Circumcision isn't something to worry about, if they're circumsised or not isn't an issue. It changes basically nothing for that person so the choice of a parent to have their child circumsised or not isn't really a problem.

[+]gaelgal -6 points-5 points-4 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Are you saying that you should only give kids stuff that is necessary without their consent? School isn’t necessary, and I’m sure kids wouldn’t give their consent to go to school, but we force them to go anyway because it’s in their best interest and that’s what a parents job is. We shouldn’t be using the consent argument when we argue against circumcision, we should be arguing that it is not in the kids best interest that they be circumcised.

[–]topazot 10 points11 points12 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I would say school is necessary, everyone needs that basic education. Things like schools and vaccinations are needed, but circumcision is just a cosmetic change.

[–]gaelgal -5 points-4 points-3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well school is a good thing and in the best interest of the child but it’s not really necessary, the child won’t die without it. As you said, circumcision is just a cosmetic change, and is not in the best interest of the child. We can’t argue that the child has to consent to everything because the child is too young to fully understand what he’s consenting to and It’s the job of the parent to consent on his behalf.

Circumcision can save you an awful later in life ordeal.

I know a buddy that wasn't, and about 25, when ever he got a hard on it clamped down on the top of his dick.

He would wake up in pain,

"Just get it done" a lot would say.

You try convincing a 20ish year old to get it done, get stitches, and wear a condom for 6-8 weeks.

At least as a new born you heal very quickly, and you forget.

I'm sorry, I had to reread my post to make sure I didn't make the claim that everyone should be circumcised (spoiler, I didn't). According to your link, at most there is no clear evidence either way. And acording to The American Academy of Pediatrics, there are some, albeit slight, benefits. Hardly seems like a reason to to be so against it.

[–]Chronoguy 18 points19 points20 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It's pretty clear that their stance is:

routine male circumcision should not be performed prior to the age of 6 months.

and that it "may contravene human rights". How can you read that and think, 'yup, sounds good to me'. There is no clear evidence that it is medically beneficial, so just cut some of their dick off because someone else's religion used to? You admit that a vice director at a children's hospital is recommending a treatment with no medical benefit. And not just any medical treatment, but an irreversible surgery with non-negligible chance of complications. Even in this statement it says: "In the majority of cases, parents will decide for or against a routine male circumcision on family, social, aesthetic and religious grounds rather than on medical ones".

Seems so strange to me that people defend it at all. Might as well say: 'cut out one ball while you're down there, it might halve their chance of testicular cancer'.

[–]TheCrippledGod -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah, it makes its stance clear, but it also says there is no clear evidence either way. Look man, I'm not pushing for circumcision. I just read a report that claimed that the health benefits outweighed the risks, and another that claimed the opposite. I read a report that said it lead to psychological trauma later in life, and another report that claimed it found no link between increased stress or trauma and circumcision. If it is found definitively that the risks outweigh any benefits, I'll wholeheartedly denounce it. Even now, I would never claim that circumcision is something that SHOULD happen. All I'm saying is that right now, it still seems to be up in the air.

Argument from authority

An argument from authority, also called an appeal to authority, or argumentum ad verecundiam is a form of defeasible argument in which a claimed authority's support is used as evidence for an argument's conclusion. It is well known as a fallacy, though it is used in a cogent form when all sides of a discussion agree on the reliability of the authority in the given context.

From all I've seen male circumcision has major advantages.

Honestly question - why is it not alright for a family to choose this for their child? Wouldn't it be better to do this when only a few days old versus at 18?

[–]Hazel-Lollypop 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well one of the reasons you don't want to do it to infants is that the foreskin is fused to the glans at birth, which doesn't separate naturally until around puberty. Circumcision as an infant requires forcibly separating the two, in some cases you get bits of glans removed with the foreskin and bits of foreskin still on the glans, delightful.

The chances of getting bad complications from circumcision is statistically more likely than any benefit being claimed. The only organisations saying Circumcision is a benefit are American based or based on other heavily Circumcised countries, conflict of interest. Of course they want it to be viewed as 'healthier' to validate continuing the practice, which wasn't even done for health reasons in the first place.

[–]CreeperCooper 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

major advantages

Name them, then.

In the western world, circumcision isn't going to make a dick cleaner at all. Good hygiene is so common here that circumcision will have no effect. In Africa or the ME this might be a reason.

It may reduce the chance of getting a std. But again, in the western world, boys learn sex-ed. Men know how to have safe sex. Even if a man doesn't know how to have safe sex, circumcision isn't going to do much. It only lowers the chance of getting a std, it does not make it certain. Again, in Africa or the ME it might have a sizable effect, but in the western world it wouldn't.

why is it not alright for a family to choose this for their child?

The main one is consent. This new born baby cannot consent to what happens to his penis. Now you might be wondering, well, big deal, right?

Well.. it's his body. He has to live in it his entire life. We are in the age of #MeToo and "Her body, her choice". I don't think it's unreasonable to apply those standards to men, too. His body, his choice. A new born baby cannot consent to an operation like this.

Second is freedom of religion. If circumcision is wanted because of religion, well, too bad. That new born kid has no idea who or what god is. Freedom of religion also means not being forced into practicing one, meaning that a kid should be protected from having religion enforced on his private parts.

When at 18, the male can decide for himself if he wants to be circumcised or not. That's his choice.

Very hostile way of answering an honest question -

WebMD and other, non-religious sites, show otherwise

  • A decreased risk of urinary tract infections.

  • A reduced risk of some sexually transmitted diseases in men. Protection against penile cancer and a reduced risk of cervical cancer in female sex partners.

  • Prevention of balanitis (inflammation of the glans) and balanoposthitis (inflammation of the glans and foreskin).

  • Prevention of phimosis (the inability to retract the foreskin) and paraphimosis (the inability to return the foreskin to its original location).

  • It doesn't look like an awkward turtle. (edit - trying to inject comedy)

The consent argument is pretty weak because a baby can't consent to anything, it's the parents legal responsibility to choose what is best for their child. This covers medical care, to type of clothing they buy, to food they feed them.

The religion part is still under the legal rights of the parent so I don't need to repeat myself.

(There is no comparison between female and male circumcision)

[–]CreeperCooper 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Very hostile way of answering an honest question

I wasn't being hostile, though? How did you expect a reply would look, then? Sorry if you thought I was acting hostile, that wasn't my intention at all.

WebMD:

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) found that the health benefits of newborn male circumcision outweigh the risks, but the benefits are not great enough to recommend universal newborn circumcision. The procedure may be recommended in older boys and men to treat phimosis (the inability to retract the foreskin) or to treat an infection of the penis.

A decreased risk of urinary tract infections.

A very low chance of getting it if you practice basic hygiene. Something ever male practices in the western world.

A reduced risk of some sexually transmitted diseases in men. Protection against penile cancer and a reduced risk of cervical cancer in female sex partners.

A reduced risk is always great, sure. But in the western world men are learned to have safe sex. They wear condoms, know how std's work and are transmitted.

It’s rare. But it can be treated, especially if it’s found early on. In the U.S., doctors find it in about 2,100 men each year.

That's a really low number. The chance of getting it's is already tiny, circumcision isn't going to be a large effect.

Prevention of balanitis (inflammation of the glans) and balanoposthitis (inflammation of the glans and foreskin).

Avoided by basic hygiene.

Prevention of phimosis (the inability to retract the foreskin) and paraphimosis (the inability to return the foreskin to its original location).

Very low chance of happening, too. Can be treated with a cream, circumcision isn't always necessary to treat it.

The consent argument is pretty weak because a baby can't consent to anything, it's the parents legal responsibility to choose what is best for their child. This covers medical care, to type of clothing they buy, to food they feed them.

Medical care, buying clothes and feeding babies are necessary to keep them alive. Circumcision isn't.

You might think that circumcision falls under medical care, but you'd be wrong. There aren't any real arguments to suggest that circumcision is a big medical plus in the western world. In Africa or ME, maybe.

The religion part is still under the legal rights of the parent so I don't need to repeat myself.

Why is it okay to enforce a religion on a newborn baby? Reading the bible to a kid is a lot different than cutting off skin, right? Is religion a justifiable reason to enforce medical operations on babies who don't hold such religions?

If that kid grows up to be an atheist, he will forever be physically branded as the religion his parents are. That's not freedom of religion. Going to Sunday school or having to hear bible verses is not the same as being physically scarred for life.

(There is no comparison between female and male circumcision)

When considering it from a biological view you are correct. The body of boys and girls are not the same.

Looking at it from a ethical view, you'd be dead wrong. There is nothing different from the moral of taking away the consent of a child (male or female) and cutting in it for religious or cultural reasons.

When people compare fgm and mgm they don't compare the biological effects it produces, but the ethics of it. Is it okay to take away the rights to decide how someones own body looks? Saying no to 'fgm' and 'yes' mgm would be morally corrupt.

Girls prefer circumcised. There’s no more reason to want it.

No we don't. None of my friends do, either. And I'm American. We like our partners to feel everything and for there to be as much penis as possible. We also don't want it to be dry and painful (circumcision removes mucous membranes and the natural gliding action of the penis, among a LOT more things).

We like sex as nature intends. Women that say they prefer cut have almost never been with a natural penis. There was a study or two on this. Can't find/link them due to being on mobile, though.

You like your partner to feel everything? The foreskin covers everything. You feel way more without it. My friend who got his done as an adult said his dick was so sensitive after getting cut the shower would make him cum.

And I’ve been to a lot of parties where the question comes up. Uncut dicks are a running joke.

And who the fuck is having ‘dry and painful’ sex? If your pussy is that dried up I’m sure the absolutely disgusting smegma in a Dick isn’t helping much.

PS. Smegma isn’t a mucus. It’s shed skin cells and oil. Far unlike cervical mucus that a vagina produces and actually lubes. Men are supposed to clean that shit out. You’re disgusting.

Sharing comics by a white nationalist is probably not good for an already-controversial sub.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points14 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It is a contraversial sub because it focuses on specific imbalances in western society that favor women, which goes against the liberal agenda in all our media saying we live in a patriarchal society. I dont particularly agree with everything posted here, I dont frequent this sub even, but even I am not naive enough to misunderstand the purpose of this subreddit. It is abused men who are oppressed by a society that for whatever reason has chosen to favor women in live altering points and events of their lives, who want to make it known that they are receiving the brunt end of this current push of feminism to upend society in their own favor.

Feminism has chosen to adopt any and all movements, and segments, in its name as one unified front in order to rally behind the idea that any and all women are victims of oppression and we must focus all efforts to rectify this. In reality there are specific situations where either sex has its advantages or disadvantages, which can to one degree or another be exploited to their advantage. Inclusive feminism, or intersectional feminism, was supposed to be a subset of this movement aimed at addressing this subs issues. It was of course hijacked by what I would call a special interest group. What I mean by that is in a group where minorities are identified, there will be one minority which fights to establish dominance in that group in their own best interests. Hence a special interest group. Obviously the whole maga craze got hijacked by white supremacist neo nazis, in the same sense that BLM was hijacked by black supremacists, cop killers, and anarchists.

The reality of this sub is that the angriest and most passionate will be the loudest and heard first. That doesnt give you the right the declare which direction the sub is headed because you are culling the least fortunate who struggle to be heard, and fight to stay afloat. Please think about what you are trying to promote on a MENS RIGHTS subreddit when you begin trying to police its content.

What I'm promoting is not giving free ammunition to one's opponents if it can be avoided. Surely it's possible to advocate for men's rights without giving clicks to white nationalists.
