I really don't understand the author, she acknowledges at one point that she has had boyfriends who have been better than her at common housework duties but then she returns to her misandristic narrative.

But those who choose to remain ignorant and then ask their girlfriends, wives, partners to do it for them are participating in a very subtle form of misogyny that burdens women with low-level emotional labour.

She intentionally added the word "partner" to show that it's not a gender issue then she immediately returns to misogyny. I just don't understand...

What a prattling load of crap.

You know, the lazy dad trope really bugs me. If you go back before the 1950's, women were often the comic relief. Once you get to the 60's and onward, it changed to be the incompetent husband and the put-upon wife.

All these types we know; Homer Simpson, Peter Griffin, Hank Hill, basically any male character in any western world sitcom (the 3 guys from Friends as well) are all portrayed as incompetent and inept.

Clearly the author's anecdotes here are mixed. She knows some guys well-skilled and capable, and she knows the lazy and stupid types. We all know this, we men come of a very wide distribution of Darwinian variance.

But the author keeps pushing the narrative that I think is far more informed by media that pushes a somewhat anti-male narrative than it is by real people she's known.

But, alas, it's more of the same. The same kind of bullshit we have to put up with. You know, because Men's Day is every day apparently. Yay for us...

This isn't anything uniquely "male." Every one of my female relatives expects the men to fix the computer, configure the TV, repair the car, etc. They choose not to learn how to do it, and expect someone to do it for them.

And we do, because nobody can be good at everything. It's good to specialize. It's not "emotional labor." It's called being in a relationship.

I think in many cases it comes down to one of several things:

Firstly, many men simply do not see value in the task at hand. I've had roommates who eat out of can for every meal. They eat a healthy amount and make good food choices, it's just that everything comes from a can or box. The food isn't great but it is low effort and gets the job done. Then, along comes the girlfriend who says that isn't good enough, then gets pissed when her boyfriend can't cook. He places a very low value on eating homemade food - he's always just eaten out of a can, the freezer, or whatever. The solution here is to manage your partner's expectations - "Well before I met you this is how I ate and cleaned, I consider it good enough, if you want something else you are welcome to do it yourself."

Secondly, many people are very competent at a task but they do it in a completely different way than then some others and those others may consider that totally unacceptable. The only solution I know of for this is to have no expectations when someone does me a favor. Say thank you and be grateful, then either fix it if it really matters or just leave it be and let it be good enough.

Thirdly, some people (many men too) won't consider a task done good enough unless they basically do it themselves. They don't see anyone else as capable of what little thing it is they want to control and will throw a temper tantrum about how someone did something if they weren't consulted every step of the way. These people just have to be avoided. Maybe they will get better, but not without significant effort on your part.

Women like separation of labor for masculine responsibilities and shared labor for their responsibilities. This is why women love to act so put upon all the time. They want to up the value of their particular contributions in order to have a relationship duty bargaining chip. Men often do the opposite. We are taught not to complain about the difficulty of a task which leads to an imbalance in perception of the difficulty of each realm of relationship duties.

Yah I'm not seeing this. My wife will literally not let me do laundry because for whatever reason I can't figure out how to do it properly. If it were up to me is but everything a size larger than I need wash it all together and dry it all. She knows what fabrics can be dried and what can't. I've tried but I can't learn it for some absurd reason.

Likewise, she let's me take care of our phone/computer stuff because she knows that's my area of expertise. No one in their right mind thinks that this.
