Its a way they are trying to get you to qualify yourself to them. I would just keep it light and possibly lead. Answer her question with a question, get her to qualify to you.

You can also put the question on pause, tell her you will answer, but not before she tells you why she is a waitress, or wants to be an actress, or whatever qualifier you want to use.
