I was asking myself this over and over again with tears in my eyes last night before I went to bed.

What’s the point of finding your person, ask her to marry you, spend the money on a wedding, take your vows and commitment to heart, start a family, move three times to better homes as that family grows, keep advancing in your career, earn more to provide for your family, save as much as you can to secure your financial future in retirement, spend almost 20 years married, all of it and trust that person to be by your side for the rest of your life until death do us part?

What’s the point of it when she’s unhappy but it’s kept in silence, confides in her friends instead of you, mourns the marriage ending months in advance before dropping the bomb on you, tell you that she is done because she’s changed and needs to focus on her happiness, break apart that family you’ve been raising for 18 years, flips the switch and instantaneously turns against you, immediately starts treating you like you never existed and moves out to begin her new life 6 weeks later?

What’s the point of believing she’ll do the right thing because she is also successful and not come after my retirement, not try to force me to refinance the mortgage at one of the worst times to do so so she can also get a $200k payday or force me to sell the home less than 2 years from our daughters graduation?

What’s the point of signing a contract with your forever person when that same person can unilaterally break it because she wants to and gets paid to do it?

The very last time I asked her why she wouldn’t have another talk about us, her response?

“Because there’s no point”

Exactly.
