I'd rather have a well thought out date (that can be but is not necessarily an expensive date) because I already have all the video game consoles and entertainment options I want/need.

I'd honestly really appreciate a woman who has planned the entire day of activities e.g. finding the best restaurants in the area, finding and booking fun activities to do, reserving seats ahead of time, so the day is just relaxing fun for me.

Men, however, appreaciate utility and do not really care for romantic dates, yet gifing such an expensive gadget sounds like a sugar-mommy thing to do.

Really though I think it depends on the people involved. Non-gamers see games as a waste of time (but happily waste hours binging on Netflix), so most wouldn't see the benefit.

I'd rather have a PS5, id hope dates are regular thing anyway. The reason FDS recommends them to, not just give their man an expensive date, but rather choose a date over a PS5 , is because this would symbolise the subservience they expect from men ("I'm not like the other girls, you're not getting a PS5, instead you'll get blah blah blah). These people aren't romantic or "love" in the truest sense, they are rotten to the core.

The PS5 thing is just a fun meme, mostly about guys doing outrageous acts of love to get their gf to buy a PS5. You can always trust the FDSers to reveal their narcissism by spinning it into another manipulation strategy.

I like video games and i have been eying the PS5 for a while, so if i had to choose and was being honest the PS5 would probably be my choice like 9 times out of 10. I would be a little conflicted though because I do feel slightly uncomfortable when people spend large sums on me, but I'd definitely appreciate it more than the date.

Female, would prefer a partner didn't buy me expensive gifts at all, but I'll gladly take the PS5 assuming I have to pick one. I really don't care about fancy dates or dropping a lot of money on one-time experiences. This is all down to just knowing your partner, though. Anyone with me would get a "wtf, have you met me?" look upon attempting to take me on a "romantic date", but I imagine a lot of women would prefer that over a console. If you're going to make buying a gift all about you, then what's the point? In the one relationship I've had, we just mutually agreed to ignore birthdays, holidays etc. because we were both broke anyway.

Edit: as for the second question, no. People want what they want. My friends, SO's, and relatives have entertained my weird b-day gift requests for as long as I can remember. This year it was literally just a massive teddy bear because quarantine had me feeling lonely. I like to extend the same grace to other people.

For my bf, I'm actually hoping to give him a PS5 for his bday (if I can get my hands on one) for the same reason as you said. Dinner is one night, but PS5 will last for years!

That said, for my own bday, because I LOVE food, I probably want a nice meal - something I don't get very often, like good sushi or steak - and because I'm not a gamer. And a less expensive gift is fine (I've received more pricy things in the past).

I'm a girl but I don't mind buying gifts for my boyfriend on his bday. I don't mind that he plays video games. I don't mind going 50/50 or SHOCK even treating my bf to dinner sometimes.

Honestly the first time I discovered FDS I was so shocked. I break at least half of their rules. But I and my partner are both in our mid-20s and make similar amounts, so I don't need or want him to pay for everything.

1) As the recipient I would prefer the romantic date because I don't play video games. As the gifter... I'd get him a PS5 if we were serious and it was his birthday or Christmas and I knew he wanted one. However for anniversaries we both prefer experiences over gifts.

2) Yes. I spent a couple hundred on his last birthday for things I knew he wanted and wouldn't buy. Uses them every day and repeatedly tells me how much he loves them. Why would I spend money on something that will go unappreciated?

A date may cost less but there is more investment that goes into it, thought and planning and the general idea you want to be close and spend time with the person.

Its kinda a toss up. Monitary gifts are alway still appreciated by people but they are just things. Investment and experiences can't be replaced.

Money is not a factor I consider when thinking about this situation.

I can get both the PS5 or the dinner on my own so it isn't about obtaining something material out of it either.

I am not good at recieving love/feeling loved through gifts. I personally preffer quality time or acts sof service.

So I guess I would preffer the dinner over the PS5. The only way I could appreciate the PS5 more is if it comes with her spending time with me playing. That requires an amount of time and dedication from my partner that is harder to mantain. On the other hand a dinner requires less time, dedication and effort to make it an enjoyable time so it is easier to have a good date and a good memory.

I would preffer the dinner. It is easier to appreciate and harder to fuck up.

Seems like a bit of a waste of money, but spending $500 on dinners is vastly superior to Playstation 5, kinda obviously for me.

There's limited opportunity going out to dinner, requires effort and commitment. You can order a PlayStation yourself super easily. You spend all your money buying tons of PlayStations. There's limited amount of money to be spent on dinners, max out the dinners, then buy the one PlayStation, let the remaining money sit in a pile.

I guess the real answer is just "Why don't we have both?"

Money is much better spent on experiences than it is on 'things'. That's a general rule for life, not just relationships.

Salubrious relationships work best when couples set romantic time aside for each other (especially when they have kids)

As aside side note - women are better of not dating gamer men (unless they game themselves).

Neither, rather her to put that money into her own 410k (or pay off existing debt, seems like debt free people in general are kinda a rare thing in the US these days). In these trying economic times sensible financial decisions with an emphasis on long term planning is romantic in its own way. Also if the relationship has a significant chance of failure then it would be rather exploitative to aim for perks that could potentially outlast said relationship (and there's the whole "material goods acquired during/because of a relationship becoming tainted after the breakup" but that's probably not a significant factor in something that has significant value outside of its sentimental values).

Any potential relationships would be a great opportunity to mutually improve each other through advice and better lifestyle choices (some of which gained through pooling of assets and lower costs of cohabitation, the others being covered under the advising aspect).

I’ve been seeing the PS5 conversation a lot on twitter recently. The women are suppose to do nice thing and gift their boyfriend/husband a PS5 and they are throwing a fit about it.

Seems like women don’t want to encourage that type of behavior. Going out of their way to do something the guy actually wants. If a woman is gifting, it’ll be on her terms, not the guys.

If she’s paying for the vacation, it’s where she wants to go.

If she’s paying for dinner, it’s the restaurant she wants to eat at.

Neither really appeals. The expensive dinner (by expensive I mean well outside the normal range for that sort of date) is a classic "first you watch me show off then you owe me" move, and the ps5 is not something I want and I would probably feel he is buying it so he can slob out playing games at my place. All in all neither make me happy. Couldn't he just get me a book or a big bunch of carnations or a pack of fancy tea he thinks I'll like? Or take me on a normal cost date but we walk somewhere nice after? I mean I guess if it comes down to it I'd take the fancy dinner over the ps5 because it doesn't give me the problem of where to put it and how to set it up.

And no that doesn't make me a pickmeisha it just makes me someone who likes her expressions of caring to be within socially appropriate levels and thoughtfully chosen.

Not in a relationship at the moment but yes of course I care about buying gifts that really hit the spot. That's the whole point of gifts... finding the mark and then being dot on the mark. I care about every gift I buy this way. If I'm not caring I don't buy.

I assume the motivation for FDS though is that they would want to condition the man to reciprocate what their preference is i.e. they would rather get the dinner than an electronic gift or something of that nature.

And probably because they know you can get a good dinner for cheaper than a ps5.
