Great post. Mandatory paternity testing at birth should be the law. It gives men who are unwittingly not the biological father the chance to decide whether or not to spend their time and resources on children that are not theirs.

The societal impact could be huge but it is largely irrelevant. Making unwitting fathers shoulder the financial burden is basically legalized fraud. Also, the true biological fathers are potentially missing out on parenthood, and it's ultimately their responsibility to pay for their own child.

If two adults get pregnant then it is wrong that the state forces a third party to finance their decision. It is morally and ethically wrong and should not be allowed.

Divorces may happen, but they happen in such numbers today that I doubt it will matter. The assumption that more single mothers will be getting government subsidies is probably true, but remember, the child does have a father and it's that person that should be paying. So having laws ensuring that is all that is needed.

Paternity fraud happening 10% of the time a child gets born is completely unfair and I can't believe it's allowed.

Edit: One sentence in the article is key, it said that the assumed father is the husband of the wife. Again, as a MGTOW, if you're not the husband then you have more rights, like the right to say it's not your child when it isn't, and use DNA testing to prove it. If you're the husband, it doesn't matter, you're screwed no matter what. Men, just don't get married, it is a raw deal and this is just another reason why.

I don't think it would affect families as a construct, but there would be less families built up on lying, so that would be a nice thing. It also would ease any concerns that one can have about their children being truly theirs.

The only fallout I can think of is a financial one. Who would pay for mandatory tests? In the US, I guess, it would be covered by insurance and I doubt it would be met gladly. In countries with national health insurance it would create a new expanse and it seems that most countries don't have enough money even for treating some life-threatening things, not to mention mandatory tests.

It’s a good idea. And any man who finds out a newborn isn’t his should be given a short window of time to walk away scot free. Regardless of what the prenup says, regardless of his state’s typical divorce laws, and regardless of what he’d otherwise owe, documented attempted paternity fraud should be grounds for a divorce in which he owes no alimony, child support, etc. However, once that window closes or he opts to accept the child as his, his parental status should be legally identical to biological parenthood and the lifetime of responsibility that entails.

I don‘t have an issue with it.

I expect the termination rate, especially in married women, to climb immediately if it was introduced though. People wouldn‘t take that chance if they had doubts over who the father was.

It would depend mostly on how it's presented.

If you're smart, you sandwich it in as 'genetic testing' so that if the child has issues later, you'll already know if the parents are a good match. This also involves the mother being tested, and has a net benefit outside of potential paternity issues. It's a lot harder to argue with.

If you present it as 'lol them hoes ain't loyal', you'll piss off a lot of people. While cheating can, and does, occur, not everyone cheats and assigning roughly half of the population as a potential cheater (as if men can't cheat and have children on the side, thus diverting valuable resources away from the older kids) is going to be thorny as hell.

You would also need to legislate what happens in cases of medical chimeraism, recent transfusions/transplants, contamination at the testing site, or something similar. All of those cases are relatively rare individually, but it does happen and as a whole can present an issue.

All that being said, there are a lot of people (including me, who is childless and who doesn't plan on ever getting pregnant/having kids) who are extremely uncomfortable with some sort of federal database have access, long term, to my DNA.

I think more women would careful about protected sex and would also have less sex in general. What could be dangerous is the fact that this way you could easily build hge DNA databases which could be abused in the future.

Any man who isn't reviewing paternity result tests before signing a birth certificate in this day and age is a blithering fool. I was personally AT a wedding where the bride was already fucking the best man for over a year before the wedding. The groom had no idea.

I think it's great to know if your baby is truly yours. But women or men shouldn't be fined if another man was found as the biological father. It's up to the couple what to do in the paternity fraud case

I’m a woman and a feminist. I think it should be mandatory, if there is a man available to be tested.

It’s a simple, scientific way to ensure the rights of all involved are protected: both parents and the child. If it were mandatory, there’d be no cause for offense or arguments, it’s just standard procedure.

However: I do feel that some men might find themselves sorry they wished for this when it turns out they actually are the father.

My brother in law actually found out his oldest wasn't even his (from his ex before my sister). Turns out the mom knew the entire time but didn't want to raise a kid on her own so she never told him until the daughter took one of those 23&me tests and found out on accident.

Ultimately, it's on the state to prove guilt before taking punitive action against a person. The state should mandate paternity testing as a matter of child support proceedings before support is awarded and the state should pay for that testing. When child support is sought, paternity testing should be mandatory.

Requiring this would save a lot of men from being essentially slaves for 18 years for a kid that isn't theirs.

I don't think that knowing the child is yours can or should be labeled a "luxury", I think it's a basic human right.

Look, the fact is, we as a society, don't and shouldn't make decisions based on what's "detrimental to society". If that was the case, a person murdering a man who raped his daughter would be okay. After all, what benefit does that rapist provide to society from that point on? Rotting in jail and sucking tax dollars?

There would be more divorces, less marriages, but that's it. I mean, SOMEONE is the father of that child, and the woman should go after The biological father for support. Society should not cover that cost. It would cost society more for it to be publicly funded, which it should be.

But at the end of the day, it is a basic human right to not be a victim of fraud, society recognizes that because it makes every type of fraud illegal except for paternity fraud.

I don’t want my tax money supporting sexually insecure men, but if our representatives voted to pass such a law (doubtful), then I suppose I wouldn’t have any choice.

If I were forced to pay for a paternity test for my own child, I’d rather just pay the fine for breaking that law. I would support a voluntary opt out so a man would not have to pay, though.

Close to 30% of children would be the result of paternity fraud.
