This is something I've been aware of for about as long as I can remember. I've mostly felt a sense of detached sympathy combined with a vague sense of shame. But - occasionally - I've also felt a sense of resentment.

It's something that I sort of understand, but mostly don't. I put it down to the fact that I've never been, at any time in my life up to now, been anything other than male.

So my question is, what is degrading about the male gaze?

More specifically what is it that's demeaning or insulting about being the subject of male sexual interest?

For reference, the closest I can come in terms of personal experience is that when I was younger - many long years ago - I got hit on by gay men any number of times. I don't think it's the same, though, because I never felt degraded. I felt sorry for some of them, but never insulted.

So it's an honest question. I'm not trying to be tricky or anything.

TIA.
