Yes, not a lot of heart has gone into this "gift". In Chinese we call it no "誠意", and it's perfectly fine in Chinese culture to dislike a gift because of that. I don't know how to translate it to English as the word is kind of untranslatable (Wikitionary translates it as "sincerity" but it's more than that). I guess not putting much thought into something is what that word describes.

I liked that aspect of Chinese culture. I absolutely hate random gifts, it seems like you're nothing to the person who gifted you. I ended up a +10 years friendship because she gave me something that was clearly a second-hand gift that she didn't like 🙄

I get that proposals can be romantic and spontaneous... but like... plan a LITTLE
It’s true not all women care about the ring... I think if you take the big step to propose to someone you should have a thoughtful ring though. If you can’t afford some kind of decent ring you can’t afford a wedding or a wife and family.... you can still get a ring or something more meaningful than a string for less than $1k
It doesn’t have to be a 10K 2 carat blinding monster or whatever if that’s not your jam or if the couple is low income... I totally get it...but it should still definitely be more than a string in my opinion
I’d want to know my partner carefully thought about marriage and proposal and is taking it seriously...so much so that they took that extra step and invested in it $ to an extent.

Yeah, I’m the type who would’ve thought something like this was super romantic in my 20s. Now, I can’t even conceive of wanting to partner with a man. But if I did, he would have to be bringing a real ring, like $5K or more. I’m in my 40s, I have two masters degrees, and I own my own home.
