The ad made me feel bad, not because of the message that you should try to be a good person and propagate that but because it really felt that they said that most men are bad.

As someone who suffered from domestic violence for almost a year and a half (being that the woman involved wasn't reprimanded in any way) I don't want to feel that myself as a man am the one always doing the wrong thing when I know that that's not true.

What I don't like about the commercial is that it implies that bullying, sexual harassment, and being violent are not only acts that are exclusive to men, but these are the very cornerstones of which masculinity is built on. Not only are these acts all tolerated according to Gillette, they're practically GOOD acts.

For example, no men I've ever met will stand there, drink a beer and say "Boys will be boys" while watching their own son get into a fist fight with another child. That's not how men typically act to begin with, so wtf gilette?

The commercial heavily implies that men in general are basically violent cavemen rapists and we need to CHANGE and feel bad for all the pain we've caused the women of the world. Bad men!

A while back McDonalds tried to promote a healthy menu, it was a complete flop. It flopped because there was literally no market for it. Anyone even remotely concerned with eating healthy wasn't going to McDonalds. Anyone at McDonalds had already made a decision to not eat healthy.

By trying to appeal to woman who buy a men's razor Gillette has made the same mistake. This so called "toxic masculinity" as it's comes to be known, is pretty much the unwanted and dysfunctional behavior of boy's being raised by single mothers and no paternal role model. Any woman shopping for guy's grooming products for the men & boys at home is not exposed to this "toxic masculinity." Overwhelmingly, most woman that could relate to or empathize with "toxic masculinity" does not have a man at home to shop for.

I explained it exactly like this to by best friend last night. He was going on about how "the first part was kind of shitty but the overall message... blah blah blah".

Scary thing is, this is actually a genius play by Gillette because if a woman with the slightest hint of feminist tendencies walks into your bathroom and you have anything other than Gillette shaving products in there, the mental association made is that you support rape. Also, women in many households do the groceries, guess which brand of razor blades they're picking up? Those ones from "that sweet, brave company standing up for us poor women".

This doesn't surprise me at all to be honest, Gillette have done shitty things to their customer base throughout their long history including, but not limited to: weaning a whole generation of American men off the straight razors that would last them a lifetime by striking a deal to supply US army and the teenage boys recruited to fight in WW1 with shaving kits using their disposable razors, ensuring that's all they learned to use. Other highlights include when they patented stainless steel blades only to sit on the patent and prevent other companies from making them, whilst they continued to sell carbon steel blades for many years to come, because they rusted faster and therefore sold more.

Anyway, for those of you that haven't made the switch already, go buy a pack of 100 safety razor blades off eBay for $10 and a nice safety razor housing from Amazon and have the best shave of your life. Even the most rapidly growing beards will be kept at bay for the next few years for pennies a week. You won't look back.

I will say this however, I own one of the original shaving tins supplied back in WW1, it is admittedly cool as fuck.

At this point, my comment is going not going to get seen, but I feel that there is a missing piece from OP’s statement. Not all black people commit crimes, and not all men are rapists/ abusers. There is, however, a higher black crime rate than other races, and a higher rate of rape/abuse perpetrated by men. That isn’t to say white folks don’t commit crimes and women don’t abuse/rape men, but the numbers are comparatively lower. Men raping and blacks stealing are also both aspects of the environments they grow up in, with men having the “boys will be boys” culture and African Americans having the “crime is fine/gang” culture. We have to recognize this stuff to begin to work on it, so while you might disagree with the way that Gillette represented all men, the spirit of the message is worth considering.

The sentiments are ok I guess in the commercial. I'm not offended. I just could care less and almost find it laughable that a company thinks people care how they feel about certain social issues. Or that people believe they care at all.

Obviously they make a lot of points which are true. The alpha male stereotype can be too much and really annoying. Being aggressive with woman is rude and fucking obknoxious.

But it's a fucking commercial trying to sell you stuff. Just weird to me.

I've been into mens rights activism since I was 15 but this is just pitiful. I loved that commercial.

I was bullied a lot in school as a kid so the message speaks to me. I'm sure many of you understand that but there are so many false claims about this ad. Everybody pretending a company asking you to self reflect is oppressive are idiots.

No they don't claim MOST men are problems, they say some men are and ask us what we are going to do about it as men.

To me this is one of the most empowering perspectives of men I have seen in a commercial.

It feels like everybody upset about this are from the same camp of looney toons that those insane pink haired feminists are from.

But this sub turns to racism while hiding behind a fake message they inserted into the commercial?

I'm done with this sub. I have no interest in becoming an incel or Russian pawn.

I feel like the Gillette commercial doesn’t necessarily reflect the views on the right though.

To me, it seems like it was targeted specifically at abusers and not men in general. The message I heard from the commercial was “men, you shouldn’t commit or be complacent with sexual harassment”.

I may have to watch it again, but it seems like less of a crazy statement than people are making it out to be.

Aside from the fact that it's a marketing campaign solely meant to generate publicity, and not in any way a genuine call to morality, there's not really any way to make this comparison fairly.

"Men" as a people group don't face any sort of systemic injustice. The literal worst thing you have to endure is brands suggesting you shouldn't harass women. Additionally, if you don't then this isn't directed at you.

I am neither black nor white and I am not offended by the ad. Its a little cringy and heavy handed and preachy and I as a person cannot stand brands that make preachy ads because that's not their job and I know as businesses they have shady practices and I bet they do unethical things (Literally saw their Gillette branding as tramp stamps on catsuits of grind girls today ) I don't believe the thought that 'if you are offended, yr part of the problem'.

But one thing is for sure and perhaps this is what it was made for.. it's made Gillette relevant again.

Man here. After the Gillette ad aired, I can confirm that I lost everything to radical feminism. First I lost my job. Then my house. Then my balls shriveled up and my penis exploded off of my body like a rocket. But that was just the beginning.

Overwhelmed and in shock, I tried to reach a phone to call 911, but that's when the feminazis came: they beat me with hardcover copies of Gloria Steinem books and stripped me naked, leaving me to look down in horror at my mutilated genitalia'less pelvis.

I screamed as they dragged me down the stairs and threw me into the back of a Lulu Lemon van. There, they restrained me with festive craft beads and made me watch reruns of Girls and Sex In The City while I was tied to the floor of the vehicle.

I cried out in anguish, "PLEASE, I JUST WANT TO FULFILL MY NATURAL ROLE AS A PROTECTOR AND PROVIDER," but they would not listen. I could feel my testosterone and hunter/warrior instincts depleting by the second. I feared the worst was yet to come.

Soon, I was driven deep into a dark forest, where I was unceremoniously dumped out of the back of the van. In front of me was a large bonfire with flames reaching some 15 feet into the air. "We will heed your wise counsel!" The feminists shouted as one, as Clinton's image disappeared into the night. The feminists then moved to grab me and throw me back into the van.

"Can...you please...just loosen the ropes a bit..." I pleaded, mustering what strength I could to communicate with my captors.

"I HAVE A BOYFRIEND!" One of the feminsists shouted, as she punched me square in the stomach, followed by a kick to my non-existent balls. A single tear ran down my cheek as I realized I didn't feel any pain at all as her Uggs hit my crotch. I never thought I'd miss that sensation.

"Foolish Mansplainer!" Another feminist cried out. "The Gillette Ad was merely the beginning! Soon, we will have Schick ads! Then Bic ads! Then we'll move into shaving cream and male body wash! Then Ax Body Spray and Old Spice! Soon, men will be bombarded by advertising that encourages them want to be better men! Then our evil plan will have come to fruition and *all men* will be better!"

"Not...all...men" I uttered with my last ounce of strength.

"Silence!" I felt the weight of a cute Kate Spade hand bag come down on my head. It was enough.

The feminists began to laugh in unison. I started to feel feint. I could feel my life force sapping from me. I no longer had the spirit to fight. I just want to start by saying that I know where I'm commenting, and generally I very much appreciate this sub, but I think I need to say this: attacking an idea (masculinity) is not the same as attacking the group most associated WITH that idea (men). A more comparable race related comparison would be a company supporting programs to educate black men of the dangers of gang culture. The idea being attacked is gang culture, the group most susceptible to that idea is young black men.

It isn't racist or sexist to say that some harmful social or cultural tendencies need to be addressed and changed. This sub exists because of people who move past attacking ideas (toxic masculinity) and start attacking the group instead (men) as if the problem is inherent to that groups existence. I don't think Gillette has done that.

They made it clear, in my mind, that masculinity, as it exists today, is still too harmful to women; that they, in the past, have supported and promoted this kind of toxic masculinity; and intend, in the future, to support more wholesome, socially beneficial ideas of a 'masculine man.' They did not attack men as a whole, in fact, they stated repeatedly that they want men supporting men to achieve this goal.
