That's why marriage with a (wrong) man is a slow death sentence...

[–]FeministtiktokFDS Newbie 133 points134 points135 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

My mom almost committed suicide because she was in an arranged marriage to my father who neglected her needs emotionally, physically, sexually, everything. He was not a good husband. Everyone liked him and thought he was fun to talk to but he was never a good dad or husband. My brother and I as 5 year olds saw a commercial for antidepressants and asked our mom to take them repeatedly because we said “mommy were scared you’ll drown yourself in our pool.” And she said that’s what made her realize that she was really depressed was that even kids who recently were toddlers even noticed she was depressed. She never hurt herself (that I know of) and she did actually go on the meds but the best thing she ever did was get a divorce. She is so much happier and such a different person as a single woman. Genuinely i think my father’s neglect would have killed my mother. And I think he would have killed my brother and I too. Hell he forgot our feed our pets for a weekend (just 2 days) and we came home to them dead. The man can’t care for anything but himself.

May god bless your sweet mother. Reading this was so heartbreaking.

I can definitely relate to how fearful I was for my mother as a child. I am sure many children did, since, as you mentioned, most men do not want to care for anyone but themselves.

Perfectly described my mothers life. For as long as I can remember - I have watched her slowly die. First on the inside - and now physically with dementia.

Fuck patriarchy and the lives it has wasted. She was so brilliant and bright and smart - all sacrificed for a deadshit husband and 3 children who don't even care enough about her to give her final years of life dignity.

Amen.

My mother, bless her, came out of an abusive home/childhood and chose poorly.

Every now and then I wonder who I might have been, what I might have done, if I'd had a father who didn't spend every scarce moment he deigned to bestow upon me crushing my self-esteem and being emotionally abusive. Hell, the only thing keeping him from being physically abusive (because he tried that shit) was another man, my Uncle, who threatened him [my father] on Thanksgiving one year because he saw me flinch when my name was called.

My mom developed cancer from staying with my NVM father for over 25 years. Only after she recovered did she consider separation because she realized that life is short and he was making her seriously ill.

https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2020/mar/30/the-men-who-give-up-on-their-spouses-when-they-have-cancer

I remembered this article from last year…. I’m just going to leave this here….

And that’s divorce… how many don’t divorce but just cheat because it’s so honourable to stay with your sick wife but you still need your needs met (lack of sex per se has never killed anyone but he can keep telling himself that).

[–]questionablequeefFDS Newbie 138 points139 points140 points 4 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

That made me absolutely sick to read. Disgusting.

”Hurd’s partner’s gripe came when she stopped wanting to have sex. He started to have tantrums that she wasn’t showing him enough affection after her mastectomy. He began to accuse her of cheating on him; berated her for neglecting his needs; even cut her off his health insurance at one point – arguing that she was “treating him like a housemate”. Hurd started taking painkillers and having sex with him which she says made her feel like a blow-up doll, but she didn’t feel she had another choice.”

That thing (I won’t dignify him with a human title) basically threatened his wife to fuck him by taking away her health insurance. Sounds a lot like rape to me. That poor poor woman and she stayed. 😔

[–]MuffcakelordFDS Disciple 67 points68 points69 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If that isn't rape i don't know what is. The pain can only be comparable with a situation where a wife would peg her husband frequently directly after surgery in his anus, while threathening him.

And this has never happened so how come we accept it when the genders are reversed and he doesn't go to jail? Horrifying. Which is why women need equal or better opportunities to be independent and have control over her own life

[–]Noemie_MathildeFDS Newbie 10 points11 points12 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

One vetting idea is developing an imaginary malady that means you can't have sex for several months once a relationship is established. Guage his reaction. Pushy? Whiny? Bye bye.

Those men are absolute monsters

[–]ButterfliesHurricaneFDS Newbie 51 points52 points53 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

This is so relevant to our dating life too sadly. As part of the vetting, we need to ask ourselves if this guy across the table wanting coffee date first to check if we are fat / old / whatever, or that guy arguing we should pay for our meal…. What will he do / say when life strikes hard?

[–]questionablequeefFDS Newbie 26 points27 points28 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Truly! In my experience when life really gets hard via family struggles, illness, death, etc...that's when you truly see what people are made of. In my experience most men fall completely fucking flat.

[–]creamtart_FDS Apprentice 230 points231 points232 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Nah, you’re spot on. If you have to brag about a good deed, you need to take a long hard look at yourself. True decency is doing the right thing regardless of whether anyone knows or is watching.

This scrote is posting to the internet when he should be having this conversation with his wife.

[–]Sweet-yet-notFDS Newbie[S] 145 points146 points147 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Now that you mentioned, it seems so. He has never done anything for his wife then one good did where he is bound to do and can't wait to share with the world. Maybe he wasn't doing consciously but his selfish ego subconsciously driving it

[–][deleted] 27 points28 points29 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

He didn't even say what he was going to do for her or how he was going to express to her how much he appreciates her - he wants to get the ego stroke by telling perfect strangers how much he appreciates her.

It's infuriatingly close. How dare she benefit from his gratitude /s

[–]herbivorouscarnivoreFDS Newbie 10 points11 points12 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I’m cynical too, I hate shit like this. Supposedly “heartwarming” stories that are actually depressing and dystopian the more you think about it. Like how shitty and one-sided was this poor woman’s marriage? How self-aggrandizing is her husband if he’s posting this online for cookies?

Men often don’t realize they appreciate their wives until their 50s

I know because my dad was like that with my mom..he died at 65, a few days before retiring and he was just getting better for my mom. My moms life has been utter shit due to being abandoned by my bio dad when I was born, then marrying my step dad (who I’m talking about above) who had severe anger issues, and was not at all supportive of my mom. She’s had two strokes and two heart attacks since he died. He didn’t prepare for my mom in case of his death (he smoked and was unhealthy so it shouldn’t have been a surprise) with life insurance or anything so my mom went from getting his paycheck and having bills paid for to being almost destitute on social programs and the stress made her sick. Imagine losing your life partner who you’ve been essentially caring for your entire adult life sacrificing all else, then on top of that losing all income and health insurance. Under Obama care she had to pay $800 out of picket which she couldn’t afford which resulted in her having one health problem after the next and massive medical debt.

Lesson for younger girls: always make sure your dreams and pursuits are valued and make them a priority. Make sure you have some income of your own or make your husband contribute to a savings or pension for you if you stay at home. Also, women need to stick together. None of my moms friends stuck by her through any of her issues. Her “best friend” is too busy STILL chasing men and she’s in her 60s (total pick me on 3rd marriage). Never cared my mom is practically senile and alone all the time.

I have massive anxiety now being a stay at home mom with a special needs baby. I get panic attacks worrying I’ll end up like my mom on top of caring for my mom since she can’t walk (half of her body is paralyzed) and had part of her foot amputated (diabetes and stroke). She lives with me as well and when my mom and I go out with my son people look at my with pity. It’s the worst feeling.

The new generation needs to change things. We need better universal healthcare, safety nets for people like my mom and a social pressure on men to take care of shit and not be assholes.

severe anger issues

Abuse isnt an anger issue, and the most common form of physical abuse is where the man uses angry behavior to control women/children

[–]samara37FDS Newbie 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Anger issues result in abuse. He was in two wars and didn’t cope well with PTSD. He also had bipolar disorder

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points14 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, entitled/abusive mindsets result in anger. They get angry because they feel entitled to something.

Read Lundy Bancroft's Why Does He Do That?, it explains the myth of male anger causing violence. It's entitlement.

[–]Unlikely-MarzipanRuthless Strategist 28 points29 points30 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yep. This is what I thought. It reeked of what my father has done to my mother her whole life. One year he bought her a diamond necklace for her birthday and he said similar things to this man and shed a tear. He went right back to his old ways a few days after and he got the praise from outsiders of how wonderful a husband he is - and she’s been forever indebted to him for that necklace. She’s left him now and he still blames her for the marriage dissolving, even though he was abusive in every way possible for 40 years.

[–]herbivorouscarnivoreFDS Newbie 8 points9 points10 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That’s one of my other pet peeves: men who play up the struggling single dad when they see their kid every other weekend (unless something more fun comes up, then sorry to the mom! 🙄) Parenting is difficult, but I used to watch my nephews every weekend. That’s easy because it’s more like a vacation/break for kids, so they’re better behaved.

[–]mesloh14FDS Newbie 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

This is what I was thinking too.

Also, I guarantee he’s never said anything like this directly to his wife. Just to enough internet strangers for him to feel better and absolve himself of any guilt.

[–]FeministtiktokFDS Newbie 63 points64 points65 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Statistics show that’s true sadly

“Why men leave a sick spouse can be partly explained by their lack of ability, compared to women, to make more rapid commitments to being caregivers to a sick partner and women's better ability to assume the burdens of maintaining a home and family, the study authors said.”

Yep that will be appreciated. Sometimes I wonder if these women understands this is abuse. In the process they creats a standard for their sons how wife's should be treated. Very few men become self aware of these situations.

I'm talking about this from experience as in my culture women must cook for their husbands. If men cooks then it's considered he has a bad wife. It's just frustrating.

My Dad is a HVM, when my Mum was younger she had an accident at work and was mostly bed bound for 7 years. My Dad took on the roll of both parents, gave up any social life and hobbies he had to look after my Mum and me and my siblings. He got the qualifications he needed to take a higher paying job to account for a wage loss and shielded me and my siblings from the worst of what was happening. My Dad has never complained or “bragged” about how good he was, he simply was a good man. When I talk to him now about how men leave their spouses when their wives need them to act as the carer (the % is high) my Dad always responds “but it isn’t a hard decision, you look after your family first”. He doesn’t act like he’s some amazing guy for doing what he did, he always talks instead about how strong my Mum was during the time.

Once she was better my Mum didn’t want to go back to work, so my Dad told her to do what made her happy, and he spoils her rotten with the money he makes. His life has always revolved around making my Mum happy and being a good Dad, he calls out other men and he calls out my brothers when he sees they can be doing better.

HVM have always been around, don’t settle. My Mum is cherished and confident in her marriage, don’t settle for a guy who doesn’t make you feel amazing and lift you up to be the queen you are.

My dad had to step up after 30 years when mom had a stroke. He didn’t know how to use the washing machine even. Step up he did though, he had to learn a lot quickly, but I admire that he did it. He didn’t have a Reddit to say how it opened his eyes to all she did, but he told us. I’m giving the guy huge credit for not leaving her for a new wife appliance when his broke. He’s certainly a better man than my ex military husband.
