My friends ex-husband (thank GOD ex he was trash) would berate her if she needed money for gas or groceries or anything like that. She was a stay at home mom taking care of their children. She kept the house IMMACULATE (like Martha Stewart organized and clean), cooked daily, took care of the bills, EVERYTHING. He Ofc called her lazy bc she didn’t have a job and he would b**ch about her ever spending money on anything like the stuff in their home was supposed to just magically appear. How the hell was she gonna make breakfast, lunch and dinner for you and the kids without groceries???

For a moment there I thought you were talking about my father. He would expect my mom to stretch $100 for a whole month and get mad when there was no food. Like maybe we would have some of you fucking bought it. He still wonders why no one calls him.

Similar dad here. We even had to put coins together to buy bread and little grocery items, even though this guy was making Bank.
He ended up losing his high paying job not long after, then my mom became the bread winner and climbed the ladder very fast in her 40s with zero corporate experience (she was a teacher before). Dad could never really get back on his feet. He definitely resented my mom for this til the day he passed.

I remember we took a class in high school aimed at preventing domestic abuse and they told us that one of the tactics that abusers use is to make the wife a stay at home and then obsessively control her spending so that she has no freedom. Now I see the example of my parents, my mom has been a stay at home mother for the longest time but my dad didn’t once control what she spent on, they had a joint bank account and she could withdrawal whatever she wanted, I don’t understand men that make their wife stay at home but then aren’t ready to provide

Oh, what a coincidence, my sperm donor kept my mother poor as well! Technically he forced her to work but then took her paycheck. Also quite upset when she wanted to go to school, who knows what she might learn right?

That is awesome that your school had a course like that. EVERY school should have a class like that (and better sex Ed and personal finance classes but that's a different story)

I'm not good at cleaning and I know I won't love taking care of kids in the future. There's no way I'd be a stay at home mom. That's like 10 jobs in one and you don't get paid or respect.
LAZY????? that's literally a 24/7 JOB.

I also work part time.

Work is a welcome break.
Toddlers are hard and I cannot imagine being a 100% stay at home mum.

Men think its so easy until they do it. I remember reading article (can't remember the specific article or his name. just remember reading it) male who thought staying home was going to be like on vacation (he actually used word vacation). When he stayed home realized their is a lot more work involved than he thought.

I hate how this never gets flipped around on guys. You never hear, “if he doesn’t want you while you’re fat, he doesn’t deserve you when you’re skinny!” Guys are happy to exclaim that they’re bIoLoGiCaLlY not attracted to fat people, and they’re vIsUaL! Okay, whatever. I’m a little overweight myself, and I realize there are men out there who will be attracted to me at my goal weight, but not my current weight. I realize that is life, and it doesn’t offend me in the slightest. I don’t go around hating all men and telling them they’re not allowed to have standards because I’m not currently their ideal.
The problem is that men love to have standards, but won’t let us have any! Sorry, Jason. I’m not attracted to a “man” who won’t provide grocery money.

I don’t understand people like her boyfriend. It’s just gross greed. Money is a tool and when your partner needs help you give them the tool.
Recently my partner and I made an agreement that I can go down hours at my job to look for another job and he agreed to pay for the bills in the meantime. No bugging me or making me feel guilty. It’s how things should be.

In my experience, the idea of a “team effort” is really only ever pushed when the woman has to support her partner for whatever reason and it is never really reciprocated.
When my NVX was wrecking my cars, needing rides to work, needing food, or some money to cover whatever bill or fine they accumulated during their Xanax binges— I was there. I was also “cherished” as a ride or die.
You know what happened when I was the one who was going through a devastating period mentally, emotionally, and financially? They were cheating on me and preparing to dump me. I was told that I was “dumping” too much on them when all I wanted was support and my own “ride or die”. He made me feel so guilty and like such a burden and I felt like I was going fucking crazy. As if months on months of me trying and failing to smooth out his life for him was forgotten as soon as his life was finally coming into a stable peace— a peace that would have NEVER been possible if I weren’t there to keep him from becoming homeless and succumbing to the vile tendencies of a Xanax addiction.
Funnily enough, he started calling me his ride or die during his time in treatment but while he was begging me to come drive an hour and a half to visit him he was also chatting up the girl he was gonna replace me with.
I guess what I’m trying to say is— Effort needs to be reciprocated— continuously. There is no such thing as “my turn, your turn.” Effort is not an off and on switch and if you notice that even during their hard times that they are not making an effort to be there for you or to accommodate your needs, leave. I wish I did, as it would have saved me two years of abhorrent entitlement and such emptiness.

[–]honeybadgerattitudeFDS Newbie 49 points50 points51 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Same. 10 years of supporting him financially, emotionally and physically and when I became ill and needed just a fraction of that support back I wasn’t trying hard enough and he became physically abusive.

I think part of the reason men do this is because it creates dependency. If he helped her or split things more fairly (based on income) or just, stepped up and provided for her (because we all know who’s doing the domestic and emotional labor) then she’d be able to save up enough to leave him when he treats her terribly. Men absolutely know what they’re doing.

I used to have a big problem with accepting money or gifts from people for this reason. My NVX held that kind of stuff over my head at every opportunity. Every act of kindness was just a tool to manipulate me later.

We all see this everywhere. People who are in unmarried relationships with no dependents still stay in these relationships I think could be because of the tale of "being lonely." Which i blame society because if you have to keep wondering why this person is in your life, for all the negative reasons. Then why continue to entertain the clown? I hope more and more people realize that its ok to be alone and still have a fulfilling life. I personally, cant be without my cats ahahaahahahaha!!

Once I accepted that it is okay to be single, my life got so much better. I've been in 3 longterm relationships and they were so draining on me! But I stayed in them for so long because "you have to have a boyfriend or you'll be lonely and pathetic" and "relationships take work".
I've been single for 6 years now and I've never been this happy and relaxed in life. My insomnia and stomach pains disappeared since I don't have to deal with so much stress and lies. And I don't even feel lonely! My loneliest times in life were when I was in a relationship.

"My loneliest times in life were when I was in a relationship." Say it Louder for the ppl in the back!!! I felt this and been in these relationships. When I finally got comfortable in enjoying my own company, I felt this odd peace and confidence in myself. Honestly, that's a rewarding feeling for all the BS I accepted as a naive Pickmeisha.

I’m lucky in that I’ve always been an extreme introvert and really independent. A man would have to make my life significantly better for me to even consider being with him. I’ve felt lonely maybe a handful of times in 25 years. All my coupled friends seem exhausted and miserable. I’m sure there are people who’d think I’m pathetic but that’s okay, I’ll just keep on spending all my money on myself and enjoying my drama free life.

The friendly supportive lesbian here and I think I've said this before, but my now wife was working 60-70 hours a week and so stressed and unhappy when we first started dating and I work in tech and make high five figures, now six figures and we decided together that she should quit and I'll support her.
I don't make money for myself, this is our money that we share and we even joke that she makes more as my stay at home wife than she was working three jobs.
