My late husband earned that money, and we set that money aside together, my husband was so proud that our son would have opportunities he never did. Where's his mother in all this, why didn't she contribute to the rehab fund? It's her and the husband's problem, not the OP's and certainly not the young girl's! The daughter didn't ask for her mother to marry into this trashy family. So gross to have to deal with a 9 years older drug addict thieving stepbrother. I bet that girl has some stories to tell about this man that her mother doesn't even know about.

The son’s addiction has without doubt been going on for years.

...for it to be a guy like this. Who would raid the money of a child left to her by her dead father for the purposes of her education. And after only three years of marriage. My brother was also useless and drug addicted and an alcoholic and he stole from me many, many times. My parents always pleaded with me to talk with him and to set boundaries but I was young and I didn't know what to do when he cornered me and begged. Or broke into my room and stole my savings. Adults putting that kind of pressure on a teenager is NOT ok.

Also addiction, in these cases, is not something that just happens to you. I'm willing to bet no one kidnapped him and forced drugs into his arm and that he made these choices himself. They should have him arrested for stealing.

Addiction is not a fucking disease. Sickle cell anemia is a disease, Chrones disease is a disease, things you cannot control. His decision to start taking heroin isn't a disease. Why does the scrote husband know about her daughter's college fund?
I hope for the girl's sake that this money is in an UTMA or UCMA fund which has regulations attached to when/how it can be withdrawn. It MUST be used for the benefit of the person it is in trust for.
If it isn't in some kind of protected fund, the mom should lie and say it is, and that the money can't be withdrawn for another use other than to benefit the listed beneficiary. Some would disagree but that's my opinion.

My father was an addict so I can sympathize with them a bit but— you can’t get rid of your addiction if YOU DO NOT WANT TO. That man does not want to get better, so he hasn’t gotten better. My dad wanted to get better and guess what...he did, he’s been clean for 15 years now, not a single relapse and he was also a heroin addict...honestly if that was my son at this point I would consider cutting him off, all he does is steal from them and waste their hard earned money because he doesn’t actually want to get better...and the fact him and the husband want to steal from a deadman and his 15 year old daughter...YEAH NO. I would tell him he needs to cut his son off and NEVER EVER breathe a WORD about my daughters college fund or we can sign divorce papers immediately; and if he ever breaks those terms...again, divorce immediately.
