I am allergic to all metals except 14+ and higher gold and sterling silver, and things like platinum, but absolutely no steel, brass, nickel, etc.
It is 100% a real thing and if I wear any of those cheaper metals I will get a gross crusty oozing infection, which happens with my pierced ears a few times as a kid until I made the switch.
A really great way to pass on a loser guy is if he makes some comment that women are “making up metal allergies” in order to “get more expensive jewelry.” I have seen that kind of dumb comment on reddit quite a number of times. The good news was that people replied correcting them, usually.
I am willing to bet $1 the type of guy who worries about that sort of thing, or about the “scam” of engagement rings, definitely isn’t in a position to get one anyway.
My bf got me earrings as a gift for our first holiday together, I never told him anything about the jewelry thing but he decided to get them in gold anyway because his sister had a similar allergy and he wanted to be on the safe side in case I did too.
There are also practical reasons for the engagement rings, I think in the past they were a form of insurance in case the engagement didn’t work out. I was thinking about my ex fiancé, he was a very greedy and miserly person, and when I said it wasn’t going to work the first thing he did was take the ring off my finger without asking and THEN he said he was upset, hahaha lmao. At the time I did not understand how ridiculous that was or how I had the right not to bother. I actually really struggled a lot after that time and it would have helped to be able to sell that. That was also the guy who gave me two rings, a new one and an heirloom, told me to choose one, and when I took my time to choose one since you know he went to the effort he accused me of being materialistic and caring too much about the ring.
Anyway, if a guy thinks women make up metal allergies or is super worried about the engagement industry he’s probably a loser. I don’t think rings need to be a giant hit to the wallet at all, not remotely, but just be careful if a guy has a chip on his shoulder about this stuff and wants to get a cheap piece of junk for the woman he marries to wear forever. It isn’t unlike the myriad broke guys all over this website who are very afraid of gold diggers.
Remember that you most likely will have children that change your whole body, luckily we live in modern times but that does not mean childbirth is still not a risk, and remember that an engagement is a sensitive period where the guy is asking for your exclusivity but has not actually married you yet, so having a non piece of junk ring does not make you selfish, it literally represents his commitment to and Investment in the future since you as an engaged but not yet married woman are at somewhat of a disadvantage just objectively speaking: you do not have the leverage of being single and all your eggs are in one basket. Time is precious for women and quality guys realize that. It is completely reasonable you would want some symbol that appreciates the risk you are taking during that time. Of course, if the guy is a great guy it will be little to no risk for you and yet that great guy will still be the most likely to get a decent ring anyway without whining.
Remember you take all the above risks and do not feel bad. I don’t personally like really showy rings or anything and I don’t think anyone needs to be crippled financially for it, but he shouldn’t act like a baby about it.
We both working while going to school full time and I made more than him. Neither of us had much anyway so it really wasn’t a huge deal. We’ve been happily married for almost 15 years and make many times the national average with very healthy investments. But thanks for being judgmental
