The stuff prostitutes face is 1,000,000 times worse than the worst thing ever faced by a Walmart worker. There are so many murdered prostitutes every year. Almost all of them have been raped and assaulted ON THE JOB. They have higher rates of PTSD than soldiers who have served in active duty combat.

And yet they get no compassion or empathy from so called "enlightened" men on the left.

If sex work is work, it can be critiqued just like any other work can be critiqued. And Marx saw exploitation in prostitution as a specific case of exploitation if the worker more generally. He saw it as a product of capitalism and was against it. What are these leftist bros on about?

Joke's on "leftist" men. The left will BLEED support from women until they regrow an accurate theory of labor (sex work is hard, but it's not work in a Marxist sense) and become sex industry critical to the appropriate degree. Even women trying hard to tell themselves otherwise know from gut to brain that commercializing sexual access to mainly-female bodies can lead to nothing good for women. And people familiar with serious leftist thinking know: you can't do shit without women.

The contemporary western left is fucking useless and this shit is literally part of why.

The statistics show that markets for "above ground" sex and for sex trafficking are intertwined and growing one grows the other - so the only way to support anything that expands the sex industry without obviously supporting sex trafficking is to whittle away at the definition of sex trafficking until nothing counts - which is not coincidentally the main way rape apologists defend rape.

+ Even if you want to fudge the definition of "labor" to include prostitution... all labor may be coerced and exploitative but ONLY COERCED SEX AND SEXUAL EXPLOITATION ARE RAPE. Rape is considered an extra degree of perverse and bad for a reason. It leads to specific, severe forms of trauma, it can result in the creation of new human beings under clearly bad circumstances, and it is truly the historical crux of the oppression of half of the human race.

Leftists that support the sex industry are not leftist. It's fair to want to make sure women in the sex industry have other means of supporting themselves (bare minimum) before taking their current fucked up means away from them, but that's what just transition frameworks are for. You don't give up on getting rid of the coal industry because it means some miners will need to find new lines of work and they're scared of doing so or otherwise don't want to - you help them find new lines of work, because the one they're in existing is bad for humans collectively and often bad for them as well even if they're habituated to it. Not that this is a perfect comparison... because prostitutes are to prostitution as coal, not miners, are to coal mining.

I highly recommend people research the actual way Marx et al. saw people involved in prostitution as potential political actors. They are not a part of the working class. When they aren't effectively treated as chattel (pimping and trafficking victims) they're closest to a form of lumpenproletariat. With a few exceptions (like people who turn to crime as a result of jobs not being available due to racism, etc.) lumpenproles - while owed sympathy - exist as parasites to the upper middle and upper classes, and "those who feed you control you." As a group they cannot be relied upon to act with political integrity and further working class goals - they tend to be unstable, and those who subsist by personally entertaining or even skimming from the rich are easily influenced by the whims and desires of the rich. (This is why the best sources of info on the sex industry are often exited women, not women currently dependent on cash flow from porn and prostitution... their dependence colors their opinions.) Of course rarely a high end escort will luck out and successfully become reasonably wealthy/bourgeois herself but when that happens, do you think her loyalties lie with McDonald's workers? Please. She knows how her bread got buttered. She's no ally.
