My childhood best friend has to sit down with her husband when she discovered she was pregnant.

She had to have a pre-emptive convo with him along the lines of

"This pregnancy means my body and priorities will change. I will have to focus on the needs of the baby, and in turn, you have to focus on my needs. You need to support me while I support the baby."

"Also please understand I will not be in a sexy-time mood. My body will need to recover, and my hormones will be dedicated to caring for this helpless baby - and not on you - a capable, grown man"

She said his response was shock, incredulity and she said she literally watched him process this penny drop.

I told her she was wildin' for explaining the obvious to a grown man. But she insisted she had to do this to "manage his expectations".

She said it worked. Although he did resist, and pouted for a while after the baby came because his house was chaos and she was exhausted and crabby.

He would often come home from work late because of "work dinners" twice a week but she nipped that shit in the bud. After he sprung a "working late" excuse after a particularly exhausting day, she had the locks changed and cited "not fulfilling husband/father duties" very calmly. No yelling, no screaming. She stated that if he couldn't be a team player he could sleep on the streets. ( He eventually got himself a crappy hotel).

Anyway, he eventually wisened up and now he is a doting dad.

But it is stunning to me that you have to explain fundamental things to grown-ass men

This reminds me of a post that said men in a relationship will relinquish all responsibility at the first chance they get. Once someone else is doing things for them, men will slump in a habit of letting themselves off the "responsibility" leash. They will start to contribute less, if at all, to household chores, food, kids, etc.

Women often fall into the category of "care givers" wherein they are held accountable for the well-being of their families, often as a result of the patriarchal structure that looms heavily in certain households, as passed on through the generations.

It is infuriating. As a woman, I often fantasize about living alone and how much simpler it would be without constantly having to worry about the well-being of my partner. Because I love him very much, I often find myself putting his needs before my own. And over the years, I have seen how it has impacted my own life, mental health and overall outlook of the world.

And it's not to say that men aren't capable of such things. There are plenty of men who live alone and must care for themselves. But very often, men in relationships will get too comfortable with allowing their partner to take on the bulk of their responsibilities.

I just hope that the future will not be like this. As women, our lives are not supposed to be enamored with gendered obligation. And futility by misogyny just isn't cute.
