I'm still a Feminist

I considered myself a feminist for most of my life, but no longer do. But I still believe in gender equality, believe that women have their own set of unique problems, and hold no generalized negative feelings towards women.

The disconnect here is that I don't believe feminism can be defined only by a belief in gender equality. Feminists will claim that believing in gender equality makes you a feminist, but this is just their favorite motte & bailey. Feminism is a set of beliefs as to why there is not currently gender equality, and what qualifies as gender equality.

Tell a feminist you don't believe in the patriarchy, and they will tell you you're not a feminist. That assertion that it's only a belief in gender equality goes immediately out the window.

At this point in my life, as someone who considered themselves a feminist for at least 20 years, I don't think feminism and men's rights are compatible. Because many of feminism's core beliefs regarding men are not grounded in reality and/or are actively counter-productive to gender equality to the detriment of men. Patriarchy theory, for example, (the type referred to 99.99% of the time that asserts that all of human history is characterized by men collectively oppressing women, not the type that is about patriarchs as specific well-defined individuals who happen to be male but are not the majority of males), is the most hateful gender essentialist idea I know. I've honestly gotten to the point of seeing feminism as a hate cult.

There is no hate of women on here that is tolerable under the rules. On occasion we get some sad exile from the dead MGTOW or TRP communities saying bigoted things. Without fail, if you refresh that same thread half an hour later, the person will have already been disciplined and the comment removed.

This place has a clear zero tolerance for misogyny of any kind, and that's a trans-inclusive statement.

With that all said, while no one will find you disagreeable if you speak in honest terms about things, regardless of what labels you assign to yourself, the F-word is a loaded term with a lot of baggage. Feminism is responsible for a lot of misandrist activism, from the Duluth Model to the suppression of discussions about men's issues and everything in between.

It really is not as simple as "feminists are over there advocating for women; we just need to do our own thing". I truly wish that were the case. But when a city was going to make a significant investment in housing for the homeless and a feminist outcry resulted in the project being cancelled and then annexed into a women only shelter - despite that the strong majority of homeless are men and ~98% of shelter funding is already dedicated to women - to maintain that belief is simply incompatible with reality.

Equality IS NOT a zero sum game. Capitalists hoard more than sufficient resources to aid the common man (AND woman) with all of their pain. Sadly, feminist activism consistently creates zero sum battlegrounds across the lines of every effort to make an actual change for the betterment of men's well-being in effort to dismantle it at minimum and ideally coopt it.

Feminism does not have a monopoly on the concept of equality. Feminism is an ideology whose mission statement is to achieve gender equality. This does not reflect how feminism is used most of the time. By labelling yourself a feminist, you're choosing to identify with all the disgusting things that have been done in the name of feminism. The campaigns against men's shelters, the calls for gendercide, the constant misandry, the erasure of male rape victims and false accusations, etc. Even if most feminists don't do these things, these things are tolerated by the feminist movement and are allowed to operate under the feminist label. By identifying as a feminist, you are looking at all these things, and you're saying "I want to be associated with that".

I have spoken to feminists in real life, and we actually see eye to eye on most things. I can have a positive view of women and support women in areas they are disadvantaged without assuming a label that has been used for so much hate.

There is a difference between standing for women and identifying as a feminist.

When you identify as a feminist you believe in patriarchy theory, and things like male privilege, toxic masculinity etc.

Yes, women suffer, something that is made ingrained into us men from birth. And we care, obviously. Mention any problem women face on the internet or real life, and you will get huge support (more or less). And fun fact: you wont be banned, ridiculed, called an "incel" for doing so. Case in point : You mentioned you are a feminist in the title and your post is still here.

Do you think any of the above can be said for standing for issues that men face ? How many places can you actually say and talk about men's issues without the conversation flipping to women's ? Can you go and mention you are a MRA in a feminist subreddit ?

Its good you believe that both genders face their own problems, but being like Feminism, saying they will help men, where so far, they have dont absolutely nothing, is that something you want to call yourself ?

The issue is, all the big feminist cause seem to be either misrepresentation of data or pure BS.

The wage gap is pure misrepresentation of data. "Violence against women" is actually not gendered. And mansplaining or manspreading are pure BS.

So, in all that noise, what is actually real subjects of injustice for women can sometimes be hard to track.

If I find any, obviously, I'll oppose it. Feminists are not helping with that, though.

Most people here, and in fact many MRAs, are former feminists and egalitarians, who realised that feminism is precisely not egalitarian, that it is actually neither helping the cause of men nor women.

So, you will find plenty of people who are happy to agree and support defending women's issues and rights

Many, for example, are pro life, with the addition that they would love for men to also have parental choices.

So plenty of women's rights advocate here.

Most are staunchly anti-feminist, though.

The two are widely different, you see.

I would argue that it is going to be hard to actually make any kind of progress for women's issues as well as for men's issues without getting rid of feminism in the process.

You see, be it inequalities facing men or facing women, well, by definition, they are the other side of the same coin. You can't have "one side being unequal". It doesn't make sense. Equality implies comparison.advantage and disadvantage implies comparison. And the only way to properly tackle inequality and disadvantage is through approaches that involve looking at the whole picture.

Feminism is ideologically opposed to that, and so willfully blind to a huge chunk of the issue. As such, it is generally completely unable to ever find an appropriate solution, and very often actually perpetuate the issue it pretends to fight.

I agree with feminists on a lot of things, but I don't like that feminism inherently biases women, demonizes men, and often downplays or pathologizes biology. Feminism will never be able to escape the inherent favoritism for women, even as scales start to tip in favor of women's supremacy in things such as the growing gap in college attainment. The key to gender equality is being able to accept, acknowledge, and address everyone's issues, not just women's, and feminism to me seems too often blinded by hate of men or the past to do that.

The problem is that feminism seems to be directly opposed to men's rights, and actively campaign against men having injustices eased. The concept of the "patriarchy" is designed to attack men, with the presumed intent of making life easier for women.
That they stubbornly refuse to let go of the "men are privileged" because a couple of billionaires are male makes it feel like they have to spout that line in case anyone actually looks at the life of the average man compared to the average womans.

As long as someone holds on to those attitudes I can't see how they can support rights for men.

You don't have to be a feminist to be concerned about things like equality, principles of least harm, human rights, freedom, etcetera.

You do need to be a feminist to believe in a one-sided, polemic ideology that corrupts all of those principles and uses them to serve bigotry against men.

Don't be a feminist. You're not even helping women with that, in the long run. Egalitarianism, humanist, even liberal - in the original sense of the word - will do just fine, and far better than 'feminist'.

I've created and destroyed so many different versions of how I want to respond because there is so much to unpack. Ultimately I decided to focus on one aspect of my thoughts on feminism and how it relates to men, so apologies if it seems mediocre.

Personally I deeply disapprove of male feminists since I see the movement as anti male at its very core. Bht those are largely emotional arguments and although I think they have practical merit, I don't want to go down that road here.

One of the many reasons I don't like the concept of male feminists is the following: feminism is a woman's movement, concerned primarily with the needs and issues of women. And that's perfectly fine; like you I acknowledge that women have their own problems and issues that need to be addressed and remedied.

The problem (well, again just one of many) lies in the fact that even if you may not wish it, there are points where feminism and male advocacy are just incompatible with one another. There are distinct zero sum scenarios where one must win and the other lose.

Here is my current outlook: Men and women are like two separate countries dedicated to their own well-being and advancement. We may work together on an individual level but we put ourselves first. So that is to say the following---if there is ever a situation where it is either give women the win or give men the win, feminists will choose their side every time.

The question is...what will you do, as a man?

Personally I am in no way shape or form a feminist unless you count the strict definition of the word. My priorities lie entirely with my gender's advancement and I am solely focused on solving men's issues. I will certainly give help and aid to women in my life on an individual basis but I have no time or resources to expend on projects that help the other side when those resources can be given to other men.

It isn't the way I think things should be, but I think it is the way things must be until men's concerns are as etched into the public's agenda as women's. Frankly I think things would go faster if more men adopted this mindset but that is again a whole other topic.

But you seem to think that you can straddle the line between both sides and maybe you can. I don't know you or how you operate apart from the snippet you've given here. I certainly wish you luck.

Really, how one defines oneself does not matter, as long as one remains open to dialogue and, above all, pursues the achievement of justice for both sexes.

The reason why many here are skeptical of feminism, and consequently of anyone who calls themselves a feminist, is that feminism has been blatantly adopted as one of the signature ideologies of progressivism worldwide. Feminism is one of the forces driving UN's resolutions. Amnesty International has among its priorities the pursuit of justice for mistreated women and girls. Campaigns against violence on women are everywhere, in the media, on billboards, on product labels.

Meanwhile, men's issues are not only not being addressed, even in the slightest, by any major institution. But most people deny that they exist, despite glaring statistics about suicides, deaths at work, homelessness, and despite, above all, the countless testimonies of men who have suffered injustice in their lives.

Feminists, who claim to be fighting for gender equality, in reality actively obstruct any progress on men's rights.

In case you doubt this last point, I suggest you go to any feminist subreddit and write: "I am an MRA. I believe that there are many ways in which men are subjected to injustice and harmed because of their gender. That there are still unfinished campaigns against the oppression of men and boys in our society." Then take note of the difference between their reactions and ours...

I hate this polarization btw. I'd like to live in a world where feminism and men's right activism can coexist peacefully, and where istitutions give the due attention to both sides.

I think that whilst most people would agree with the rest of your post, this line stands out as something most would dispute. Perhaps you could provide a few examples so that people can see what you mean by this? Otherwise most people will assume you mean things like abortion restrictions (which still provide women more rights than men) or the wage gap (which is actually a choice & earnings gap and when accounting for childlessness women earn more, not less than men due to favourable hiring and promotion practices), and not take this part of your post seriously.

You can call yourself a Feminist, I have no problem that. The main problem I have with Feminism is the oppressor-oppressed gender dichotomy that is pervasive in their ideology. It wouldn't bother me if they didn't use it to dismiss or deprioritize men's issues, but they do. When they things like: "The criminal sentencing gap is really misogyny because it infantilizes women" or "It's still the patriarchy because it's MEN OPPRESSING OTHER MEN. It's not women's fault", or "Men just need to be better.", I start to lose faith that we can find common ground. Much of the time when they do acknowledge men's problems it's with apathy, "Why do they expect women to fix it for them."

But yeah, I've always stood in this place of frustration of watching feminists and MRAs despise one another when they are basically arguing for the same stuff. It's their narratives that clash, not their values.

I never really dropped many of my feminist critiques of society. The only difference is that I didn't change how I applied it when I looked at men.

I always disliked oppressor/oppressed narratives because you can always claim you're oppressed and use it to justify dehumanizing whoever you deem to be your oppressor. And then by saying you are oppressed and not an oppressor, you can pretty much exercise the exact same prejudice you critique.

So yeah, I always just felt feminism misunderstood men's motivations. And instead of abandoning the idea altogether, I just really always wanted to seem them just... get it for once. Like, to see it all click.

That if you go up to a bunch of homeless men and tell them they are privileged because of their gender, it helps exactly nobody.

That if you could understand that a man is intimidated by a wife who outearns him, it isn't because "he seeks domination and oppression, and needs to force you into dependence", it's because He thinks he doesn't have value to you. And that if you could just get that, you'd know it just takes a bit of convincing him that it doesn't matter, and then suddenly your push for progress becomes so much easier. Now instead of having to force your way through him, you how have each others' back.

And when you understand the other side, it just makes things feel more....sane. Like understanding women's issues and insecurities in just candid conversations with women I know, and not someone trying to make a political point, it feels less like targeted man hate against you, and more of insecurities within them.

All I want, and all I've ever wanted, was to just advocate for empathy. And perhaps more strongly advocate against antipathy. That's it. I don't care who's doing it or what label they take on or if they are on "my side" of the political spectrum or not.

If you advocate for empathy, we'll probably get along. If you try to justify antipathy, we're probably going to butt heads.

Oh right.....to take the point home, for that reason I refuse to identify with movements, political parties, political "sides", etc. I don't feel the need to declare loyalties, stick to fixed ideologies that don't change with data, or have a barrage of assumptions made about me because of one way in which I agree with one label.

No, I don’t agree at all. Women having problems is not the same as being oppressed by society. And as soon as a problem, shared by a meaningful percentage of women, is known, society goes out of its way to find ways to solve it. This happens not at all for men.

Similarly, men doing evil things to women, like rapists or violent husbands, are not part of any patriarchy or male conspiracy and it’s useless to depict them that way in any analysis. They’re just individual crooks.

And last, men and women ON AVERAGE are naturally different. So virtually all fields where men are more successful are the result of men being more interested in or talented for them.

So, of course women have problems, partly problems because they’re women. But reasoning like that, you might as well call menstruation a ‘sexist crime of nature’. The feminist analysis is absolutely useless in solving them and society already does its best.

But I think it despicable to hate anybody I disagree with; it happens too much these days. To me you’re welcome on this sub. If I had it my way I’d join a discussion online with an equal amount of feminists and non-feminists. I tried several times, but those groups never worked out.

I consider the "feminist" movement to have left me, not the other way around.

Back when it was about actual equality between women and men, I was all for it. It was when it started being about hating men, medicating boys so that they would act more like girls, seeing men as little more than ATMs from which the maximum child support and alimony should be extracted, and similar, that I said "enough."

I still consider myself to be feminist in outlook, and I actually agree that male privilege is a thing in many situations. Where I diverge is that I say that there are many other situations where female privilege is a thing, and that both of these are inherently suspect at best (and probably much worse than that).

So I don't call myself a feminist anymore, because I don't want to be associated with current trends in the "feminist" movement. It's not feminist; it's female supremacist, and in my mind that's as bad as male supremacy.

So do I and at my measly level I still do what I can to help (which is 90% just gently calling people out when they say dumb stuff, because I don't really have the power to do anything more yet.)

That said I wouldn't call myself a feminist because of how violently most feminists I know reacted when I similarly called them out on ridiculously sexist behavior.

Sometimes I do doubt a bit, I know there is a lot of overlap between here and the MRA but it's somewhat recent to see people on here directly refer to themselves as MRA. My issue with MRA is that they fall into similar issues feminism does. Of broad overgeneralisation and sometimes disinformation.

War against feminism is pointless, it drains resources of MRM, but right now it's feminism who attack and vilify MRM, a lot of MRA can be neutral towards feminism (not ally, but not hostile).

I probed MR and Askfem about willing to be friends with feminists or MRA respectively.

MRA seem to be half positive about it, but Feminists insist that they can't be friendly with "haters". So the ball is on their side.

I don't identify myself as a feminist because of all the negative types that do so (terfs, man-haters, etc.), but still identify with the base belief in gender equality. If the feminism that believes in fighting for men's rights as well as women's rights becomes dominant again, I'd be happy to take up the title.

Equally, the people that are explicitly anti-feminist just come off as misogynists looking for a socially acceptable, seemingly reasonable way to express their hatred publicly. If someone claims to be a pacifist, then starts destroying hospitals and killing people, do you hate pacifists or the one bastardizing the ideology? Yes I understand times and definitions change and the things ideologies believe in evolve, but the core of feminism remains based in equality. You want to hate someone, hate the ones that try to co-opt the fight for equality.

Feminism is, by my estimation, necessary. Because women have to look out for and advocate for one another, the same way men do. They deserve their own umbrella. They deserve their own spaces online to vent and commiserate. That's why I don't go into TwoXChromosomes and the like, because part of the reason that exists is for women to support one another in their women-dominated issues. If you go there, you're gonna find trouble, and that's that. The women in there bitching about men are going to be swiping on Tinder 20 minutes later, you can't let it get to you that much and they're not being hateful as much as they're just frustrated and want to be heard.

But here's where my issue lies:

Feminism is above reproach. Entirely. If I tell someone I'm a male advocate, that should signal zero alarm bells. I'm a man. I care about what happens to me. I care about what happens to my male friends. In what Universe and on what planet does this somehow speak out negatively to my character? Yet I have to bend over backwards to show I'm not of the RedPill/MGTOW/Incel variety. And honestly, no matter what you say or how many concessions you make, half of the time you'll never get there. When you say you're a male advocate, the damage is done and perception is everything.

What about feminism? It's not a large percentage, but there's a noticeable portion of the movement that are just misandrists hiding behind the safe blast shield of the name. What about SWERFs? What about TERFs? Combined, these sectors make up an alarming amount of people who only serve to sew hatred and chaos into the discussion. And on top of that, even the good-natured and morally harmless feminists are used to the general atmosphere of their movement, ideals, and behavior being above reproach. This leads to entitlement and the inability to accurately judge yourself. It's the exact same concept as a spoiled child; they never hear the word no, never get criticized, and never have to reflect. This concept is universally bad. Nothing good comes of that, and no one is allowed to talk about a festering infection that's poisoning a thing that should be something everyone, of any sex/gender, could be on board with.

I support third-wave feminism since as a movement it is not incompatible with improving outcomes for both women and men and society. Thus far fourth-wave feminism seems to be a zero-sum game and is associated with the worst characteristics of woke culture. And radical feminism can just fuck off. I've done significant reading on the subject and have come to understanding that most of what motivates radfems is hatred and fear.

So am I a feminist? Depends on who you ask. According to me I am as I am for equality in all facets of life for men and women. I am for a more liberal culture and more rights, more protections, and more openness and empathy between the genders and sexes. I am against violence of any kind perpetrated on anyone, including suicide, and am for mental health support for anyone that needs it.

And anyone who says these things are incompatible with feminism, or that by definition men can't be feminists, are looking to divide and conquer. I want no part of it.

Most "-ist" designations don't mean much in everyday life, unless you treat ideas in a zero-sum fashion and are directly involved in advocacy, trying to win funding or change people's minds.

Even then, I pay far less attention to the characterisation of an argument as belonging to a particular "-ism" than the merit of the argument itself. As an example, I would support ending FGM for human rights reasons, and it doesn't really matter to me whether this is characterized by others as a feminist position. I feel mostly the same way about men's rights.

Me too. I would label myself as an intersectional non-radical feminist.

but I still do believe in the cause. I hope that most of you neither disapprove of this nor believe that saying this neglects the importance of male advocacy.

I feel the same. I advocate equality for men and I respect the work of people who advocate for equality for women.

The two causes often compete for the same oxygen in the room and both causes sometimes perpetuate hateful speech against the other. But being an ally for women's equality doesn't stop me from contributing to lobbying efforts for custody law reform and doesn't stop me from calling my congresswoman and Senator about ending the genderadiscriminatory draft.
