Just my 2 cents:

The first 20 weeks of pregnancy: completely pro-choice. Either one of the parents should be able to say that they do not want the child for whatever reason.

From Week 20 to Week 28: partially pro-choice. Abortion should be legal and protected by law for justified medical/ethical reasons that can harm the mother or the baby.

After week 28: pro-life. The fetus has a functional nervous system and can feel pain. Except for extremely dangerous medical cases approved by at least 3 different doctors, abortion should be illegal.

My opinion centers around suffering.

An unborn child develops pain receptors at 20 weeks. That means they can feel their own death and all the pain that comes with it. I’m ok with abortion for ANY reason before that point. For perspective, that is 5 months into your pregnancy. If you haven’t decided on what to do with the child in 5 months, you are now required to birth the child.

Beyond that point, the ONLY reason an abortion should be allowed, is “life and health” of the mother. Even then, the mother should decide what to do. If she chooses the child’s life over her own, and dies, her sacrifice should be celebrated, and she should receive a “Hero’s walk” from the hospital as they do for military veterans and organ donors.

I'm against using abortion as an excuse to be irresponsible. But I think it should stay legal because of-

- Rape and incest

- Medical complications that pose a threat to the mother's life

- Sometimes, contraceptives can fail. Condoms can break, birth control can fail, these people shouldn't be punished because they were being responsible, it's not their fault.

But I also have no horse in this race, so I don't really care either way. I just really wish this same energy people are giving towards this (wildly overblown) verdict would be used to fight for reproductive rights for men, too.

I don’t celebrate abortions, I just think that banning them will cause even more problems. Pro-life groups and politicians should focus on making a variety of contraceptives free and widely available, precluding the need for an abortion in the first place.

Edit: Also, I’m quite annoyed by this ruling because it undercuts the advantage for Republicans that has been slowly building due to Democrat incompetence.

6 month old "fetus" is a little human being that can feel, hear. It should not be ok to slaughter them just on a whim (medical reasons is a different story). "No restrictions" means you could literally kill 9 month babies (Canada and some cretin US states do it, I'm fucking speechless) at will.

I feel that it should be a choice. The debates that ensue inevitably devolve into one side trying to get the other side to justify every. single. possible. scenario that ever has, does, or could exist and that's just not feasible. The solution, imho, is the right to choose. It's the individuals' responsibility to assess their own specific set of circumstances and make a choice based on those circumstances. A single sweeping law saying "No" is not going to properly cover every situation and it's not reasonable to ask lawmakers to sit down and draft a law for every possible situation.

Pro-life with the following caveats:
I believe life begins with the first signs of brain activity (as I believe life ends at brain death).

I have no issues with Plan B or other means to stop a pregnancy before there is electrical activity in the brain. (Typically week 5-6).

I also support pregnancy terminations after this point in the event of a life threatening danger to the mother (show to be the case in approximately 0.065% of abortions per the Guttmacher Institute), or if there is a fetal abnormality incompatible with life.

In a perfect world, I would also be ok with pregnancy terminations if the baby has significant abnormalities that would require significant, life-long medical care, but this is hard to objectively define and too much of a slippery slope.

Basically my position is reverence for life which begins at conception. Believing this means there is no room for absolutism in one camp or the other. There are definitely cases where a child/fetus should be aborted if tragic such as when the mother's life is at stake. Also I am uncomfortable with criminalizing abortion as everyone knows people will find a means if they strongly desire it.

Society must change so there is more resources both understand how to prevent contraception, to have the means available and to support new parents. I also believe there should be counseling to encourage it to be carried to term but also provide guiltless encouragement to give the child up for adoption and information where to if they are unable to cope.

I do realize this solution is not perfect and lets be honest no option with regrades to an unwanted pregnancy is. But I feel it is the most humane for all parties.

I know people who have had back ally abortion and have been places where abortion is a regular common place means of birth control. Neither extreme should happen.

I'm fundamentally pro-life, but I would never tell a woman what they can and can't do. I would prefer that no abortion happens, but if a woman wants to murder their child then is that child really better off being born to them?

I think abortion before 20 weeks is okay in the sense that yes a potential life is being lost, which is sad (and I don't for a moment think that most sane women aren't traumatised by the process of aborting) but that foetus has no consciousness and can't feel pain. I can live with that, and women should have the choice.

But the moment that foetus develops the capacity for pain and suffering, then all bets are off. Frankly after 5 months if the mother hasn't made their mind up then tough shit, there comes a point where you have to own your responsibilities. And I think this should apply in case of rape or incest too, it's terrible when that happens, but 5 months of carrying an unwanted baby is plenty of time to decide if you want to get rid of it, whatever the circumstances. If there are legitimate medical concerns for the mother or child then of course that changes things and has to be looked at case by case, weighing up the least awful option for all involved. Otherwise, 20 weeks is plenty of time to decide.

But ideally people would practice safer sex, not sleep around, and if a pregnancy happens then you suck it up and accept the consequences of your actions. What gets me is when women choose their career over the life of their child, like you really think your career is the most important and satisfying thing you can do with your life? People these days just don't want responsibility. I don't have kids, but me and my gf have already decided that if a pregnancy happens by accident then abortion is out of the question, we would just get on with it.

men's level of reproductive rights within the overall framework of overall Reproductive Rights (both parents),

what level of government is given oversight over Reproductive Rights (this will never be a one-size-fits-all solution, and that's the only kind the Federal Government seems to offer. No tolerances for different people, who live in different areas, face different risks and challenges, as well as getting taxed "all the same" regardless of where one lives. This belongs with the individual Statehouses and State Legislatures. One solution? Or many? Which is better?)

whether or not there are both options, to "opt in" or "opt out" afforded to both parents (as in, parallel options for "financial abortion" or other similar solutions. Note: Financial Abortion wouldn't be just a man's right, since both parties would have both options),

whether or not the intimacy that led to impregnation was consensual (both parties, not just one or the other- men can be and ARE tricked into parenthood),

if the laws give reasonable/justifiable access for a limited period of time (not too long, not too short)

whether or not the embryo has reached a minimum state of viability (repeatable ability to discern a heartbeat),

whether or not men are granted the same Paid Family Leave options (I'm not entirely sold on the notion that this is a really great idea, but "EQUITY"!),

whether or not the penalties for noncompliance would carry equal weight for both parties (equal crimes, equal times),

whether or not contraception exists/is marketed/is accessible for both parties (this is already a reality, today)

whether or not Planned Parenthood, who receives Taxpayer funds, fully divests their abortion practices, to an entity that receives no taxpayer funds, thus closing the "Accounting AR/AP Loophole".

If women truly want equality, then they'll also have to accept the bad with the good...the responsibility and accountability that comes along with the privilege that their ability to gestate a child AND fully determine, solely, whether the child will have a birthday, affords them. Not saying pregnancy isn't hard, or even dangerous, but it is a privilege to have a womb. Don't want to have kids, then have a vasectomy or get your tubes tied.

Many women who have abortions do, in fact, go on to have children, as part of a family unit, one they've achieved any goals they've set for themselves, prior to starting a family (as in, finishing college or getting the dream job).

People want to preserve options, both physically and financially. What if a guy can no longer go to college for a higher degree/more money because he can't afford to, due to exorbitant alimony/child support. She gets to finish college, due to abortion, but his options weren't preserved, dying before he could ever even get started? Nope. That's a power asymmetry. Sorry, ladies, go pound sand.

My take is that I’m pro life.

First of all, I’m atheist. I have always been a man of science and after reading tons of cientific literature about the topic my best contribution to the debate is saying that since the conception there is a completely new human being. Is not the mother’s body, it’s the baby’s body.

That’s my only reason to be pro life and I’m sure I don’t need more, for me abortion is murder.

The only case where I would like to debate more to make an opinion is in the case where the mother’s life is in danger. Other than that: abortion = murder

Edit: Before anyone says the newborn will live shitty lives, then we should focus all our actions in improving their life not ending it.

You're getting an ultrasound at week 12 (hopefully) to check viability and getting the genetic screenings around this time as well. You've had 9 total weeks plus a few weeks after checking for probability of a genetic disorder to weigh your options.

There is valid, scientific evidence supporting consciousness and ability to feel and sense pain between 12-24 weeks. My stance is pro-choice with no restrictions (the first option), but only if it is applicable to both parties. Meaning that, additionally, I believe that men should be allowed the same option to say, "I am not ready/I do not want to be a parent" and terminate their parental rights/responsibilities.

To be frank women still have much more of an option and hold a lot more power with this than the father does, seeing as the father would only get to make that choice after the mother decided to keep it. There's nothing to be done about that, as it would be super messed up and wrong to force a woman to carry a baby against her will.. So being an imbalance that is born of necessity, one would hope that out of respect and empathy to the (potential) fathers who have zero say in the first part of the decision that everyone would be gracious enough to allow them the bare minimum in decision making for themselves..

However, I'm not a fool.. I know full well that in our current social climate that this is asking for way too much... I just hope that, eventually, we can get to a point where both parties have the right to decide whether or not they want to be a parent.

General rule should be: if the baby could survive outside the mother with medical aid it is alive. I think as science advances abortions will have to happen earlier and earlier.

Pro Choice but primarily because I don’t think the government has any right to be regulating such a thing. If it’s such a religious/moral issue let each person face their God on judgment day.

I think the “viability” test is the one that should be applied, but I think this is a key question to answer before we modify any existing laws.

I also think that the Supreme Court got the decision right. Roe was a mistake the court made and amounted to the judiciary doing the job of the legislature. There was no right to abortion in the constitution as originally written, there were no grounds under the 14th amendment to apply “substantive due process” and, even the dissent failed to give any. And, while precedent is important, precedent based on a flawed analysis the first time around isn’t a good idea.

Now the legislature will get off its ass and hopefully do it’s job in each of the fifty states. The best government is the government closest to the people. This is the government the people has the most influence on.

If you don’t like it, pay attention, vote, and, if required amend the state or federal constitution. This is how our government was designed….not to have the judiciary write the law and lord it over the people.

I also believe lifesaving medical abortions, which are an extreme minority of them, are fine, because having to choose whether one or the other (or neither) lives is not the same as treating it as birth control. It is a huge difference from your provided option labeling it "pro choice" because it starts from the basic position that it is not ok to kill babies and proceeds to exceptions of highly unusual circumstances from there, as opposed to beginning from a basic position of "it is ok to kill babies."

It’s complicated. You have three parties involved with potentially conflicting interests (mother, father, fetus). When you boil it down, pro-life prioritizes the fetus and pro-choice prioritizes the mother.

I don’t want things to go back to coat hangers in dark alleys. Or a woman getting plastered drunk constantly to try to induce a miscarriage. Similar to how as awful rape is, the penalty has to be less than it is for murder otherwise rapists are motivated to kill their victim to reduce the chances of being caught. So if safe abortions are taken away as an option, the consequences aren’t all sunshine and roses. So I think it needs to stay legal unfortunately. Lesser of two evils essentially. If it has to be done, the sooner the better.

I wish we could convince more to carry to term and put the infant up for adoption when there are so many couples wanting to adopt.

It’s hard to sort out and balance things. Just a draft:

Mother and father want the pregnancy, then carry to term. Each get 50/50 custody and split child expenses (how is another story).
Neither mother or father want the pregnancy: Try to make carrying to term and adoption a more attractive option. Maybe charities to help with some expenses pregnancy incurs. Seems better spent than all the $ spent in the pro-choice vs pro-life debate. Abortion is legal option
Father wants the pregnancy, mother doesn’t and the pregnancy is low risk. He should have the option to pay an amount similar to what surrogate mothers receive and take 100% custody with no child support from the mother. Perhaps an exception could be made if the mother can show she diligently used 2 forms of birth control but both happened to get through.
Same as above but it’s high risk (these are medically defined terms). She gets more ability to veto.
She wants the baby but he doesn’t. She can keep it with full custody and no child support from him. Historically, women basically always had this as an option. Not that hard to find a willing male, leave after getting pregnant, don’t tell him, and raise it yourself. The hard part was doing without the resources the father brought. Alternatively a fixed modest level of child support, less than in 1. would be a start.

Abortion is not a constitutionally protected right and I hope and pray it never becomes one.

I would prefer Abortion be banned on the federal level, but I dont wish to impose my ideals on a nation of 300 million.

Also, even if it were banned on a federal level there are 3 cases that I 100% believe it should be legal and even tax payer funded when necessary. Those cases are rape, incest and endangerment of the mother.

In the case that abortion is legal i believe if either party (mother/father) wants the baby abortion should be completely off the table. Of course this stipulation does not apply when any of the big 3 cases are involved.

Also also, it should be perfectly legal for someone living in a state that criminalizes abortion to drive to a state that it is not, have the baby aborted and then drive back home to the state where the abortion is illegal without criminal prosecution.

I’d like to point out that the idea that an abortion cannot be done even if it endangers the mother is false.

IIRC, there is a procedure that takes place if a doctor/professional decides that continue a pregnancy will result in harm. It’s legal, important, and it’s isn’t considered an abortion at all, rather a procedure with the purpose of saving life.

Look up the Double Effect. I learned about just until recently and I may or may not have all the information correct, but even when the Church had a ton of influence in the medical industry, they approved such a procedure to take place since the consequences of losing two lives over one was not considered justified.

So unless I’m wrong, we can rule out life threatening pregnancy has an abortion justification since it simply isn’t the case.

Since the op actually seems interested in every persons opinion I'll go ahead and chime in again, even though over 500 posts have been made on this topic in the last two days lol.

One, the Constitution does not guarantee any right to an abortion, so reversing this decision was the correct move and it should be relegated for each state to decide.

Pro-life people have a point about killing a life. Their argument that the fetus will be a person and thus has a right to live is a valid argument and thus making it illegal to kill said life in a state is reasonable.

Pro-choice people have a point about forcing a women to carry a baby to term against her will is a violation of her bodily autonomy. Their argument that the government shouldn't have a say in what they do with their body (including whether or not to continue growing a fetus inside it) is also a valid argument and thus making abortion legal in a state is also reasonable.

Unfortunately most people are not reasonable, and I think the vast majority of people with strong opinions on one side or the other are just spouting whatever diatribe groupthink they belong to with never having given any real consideration to the other viewpoint. Personally I think because there are valid reasons for both is precisely why we should have it legal in some states and illegal in others, as per that states citizens wishes. Personally if it were on my ballot I probably wouldn't vote on the measure.

All that equality being said though, not one fucking "pro-choice" person is actually pro-choice or 'my body my choice'. Not one. That applies to the issue of abortion only to them, and for any number of scenarios they absolutely think they should be able to dictate what others should/should not do with their bodies (see the last two years as just one example). So despite my actual neutral stance on the matter, I say fuck their moniker and if somehow abortion were made illegal nationwide I wouldn't shed a tear for them.

Elective abortions should be banned at 15 weeks. For cases where the life of the mother is at risk, it should be fully up to the doctor and patient with no legal restrictions.

I am child free, and firmly belive abortion is a vital part to society. Spesifically, to reduce birthrates by people in poverty. These people are more likely to have kids, less likely to move out of poverty based on amount of kids, less likely to be educated, more risks of drugs n alcohol abuse, domestic abuse and so on.

Access to abortion should allways be a discussion regarding WHEN it is ethical, medical and so on. I don't think we'll ever have the perfect time for abortion, but it should allways be discussed. Access should still be there. Same with the ability to sign out of fatherhood, as men have no rights after the kid is concieved.

Treating a child like a punishment leads to abuse. Forcing someone to have a child they don't want leads to abuse. I don't care what the reason is for the abortion. Pro-Life. Actions have consequences. There are over 40 methods of contraception available to women. However i think it should be allowed in case of rape or medical harm. Also during the first few days i do not really care, but after that it's no longer a clump of cells like they say. I'm sorry, you can't allow abortion like in the 9th month. Or even after birth. Pro-choice, but we need to start advocating for access to free and safe healthcare as well as proper sex education. Maybe then the abortion rates will decline because people aren’t having unplanned pregnancies since they’ll be aware of the consequences and there won’t really be any worry about mass abortions.

Also, if say the condom breaks or a woman lies about being on birth control, the man gets to leave and not be held legally responsible for the child if she decides to not get an abortion.

That being said, if it’s not my child nor my relationship, it’s none of my business. If you’re planning on getting an abortion, at least think it over, that’s all.

So, generally:

Abortions should be always possible whenever there is a potential risk of medical harm for the mother or if the doctors discover some kind of malformation, or the fetus is the product of rape.
- In the case of rape, the woman needs to file a report to the police and it can only end in the guy being proved guilty and charged, or her being proved a liar and charged. This is to ensure no woman will file for rape with a fake story just to get an abortion and then withdraw.
The mother should be allowed to abort up until X weeks. This X value should be decided by referendum in each country/state wheter they want to make it until the fetus has an heartbeat or a nervous system or whatever the medical experts determine to be an important factor during pregnancy.
- This X should also be the amount of weeks that the father has to reject parenthood. In normal couples, nobody cares about this. I suggest this for cases where the mother has sex with a random dude who is then named as the father after the child is born, without having any say in the matter. In such situations, the mother needs to provide the father a dated document informing him of the pregnancy. He then has X weeks to sign the paper accepting to be the legal biological father (and liable for child support) or to sign it denying responsability and prompting the mother to get an abortion or raise the child as a single parent.
The cost of abortion should always be provided by the mother.
- Ideally, I'd like to make abortion only possible with the father's agreement, but the mother can name any one as the possible parent (i.e. a friend) just to pretend to be the biological father and allow abortion behind the back of the real father. Again, with normal couples they can share the costs.
- If the pregnancy is the product of rape, the abortion costs are supported by the side considered guilty (real rape, the man pays, false testimony, the woman pays).
- In ANY scenario should the state pay for abortions. An abortion is always a morally wrong procedure and should never be financed with tax money.

Hopefully I didn't forget anything I wanted to detail. Unfortunately this isn't an area where it is possible to give equality for father and mother, it should however be made so both sides have some say in the matter and it can be as fairer as possible.

My stance on abortion is that it should be legal without any restrictions let irresponsible women murder their children. The child probably would not have good parenting figures which would resort in the child being neglected and possibly turning towards crime and other harmful ideologies. The most common women who get abortions are often not financially stable, would not make good parents, do not know how to keep their legs shut. The kids of women like this would not always have positive impacts on society.
