I've definitely experienced similar in the software industry before. Thankfully, some companies still care more about ability than ensuring every one of the over 9000 genders is represented equally in their roster. But yeah, there are some cush gigs out there for tokens. Everyone else actually has to prove their merit, and we can often be held to far higher standards, because it is assumed we've been enabled by social advantages.

A good friend of mine works at google, as a programmer in a division that generates lots of money: adverts. He told me that managers are penalised if they don't have enough "diversity hires", and there is immense pressure on them to recruit more women and black people.

Unfortunately, the vast majority of highly qualified applicants are male and either white or asian. Hiring these highly qualified applicants upsets the "diversity hiring targets".

So, what do they do? Create loads of paid intern positions, and fill them with "diversity hires", then push them out of harms way on made up projects that will never go into production.

Managers then get praise for meeting diversity hiring targets, and senior management can virtue signal what an equal-opportunities employer Google is.

Close to none of these diversity interns get a real job in the team, since hardly any are qualified for the work, but at least they can put on their resume that they interned at Google.

I did this around ten years ago here where I live. At the time i had a masters degree in the medical sciences and a four year bachelors under my belt. It also happened to be a time when the woke government was pledging to pay any employer $10,000 to hire “new” arrivals. I swapped my name and places and the callbacks for interviews started pouring in. I would have sued if i weren’t completely broke from the years of paralyzing student debt and unemployment.

Unfortunately for you, it will be raised that they just didn't think you were qualified. In my experience, the judgment on granting an interview is at the discretion of the person reading the resume. There isn't a lot of evidence that they can say they denied you because you are male. They will take interviews from other white males the moment they get a whiff of a case. You weren't denied employment, you were just denied an interview, which I am sure in legalland is not the same thing.

I work in Silicon Valley and there's hardly any Hispanics working here on decent paying jobs, I.E. not the cleaning staff (apart from some very white looking ones). I'm hispanic by the way.

Honestly, i think white men are really good which is why people can so effectively shit on them. Call them racist and theyll take actions to avoid that label, call them misogynist and theyll put women first, call them homophobic and theyll have gay pride parades. It’s 2023 and it’s infected all of corporate now. I’ve applied to the same job at multiple companies for the last six months (five or more times). They keep reposting the job, yet never bother to contact me to even have a quick HR call. It’s either ghosted or stock rejection email. I hit every qualification and experience level they’re looking for. My resume is fine, and no red flags.

While this does raise eyebrows and should be looked into, a white male isn’t “protected”. Diversity hiring can and does legally happen, no matter how messed up that is.

Example: you have a local demographic around this school of say 60% Hispanic, 20% black, 10% Asian and 10% white. Yet you have 70% white teachers. No good according to law. They must diversify their staff based on race and race alone or they stand to be sued or lose tax breaks and many other things. It’s completely fucked up, don’t get me wrong. But that’s the way it is. ESPECIALLY in California where you can’t sneeze without a lawsuit coming your way. The pendulum has swung too far my friends. But this is the world we live in... for now.

Edit: having worked for both the federal government and a couple fortune 500s, here’s the general “points scale” for hiring (I’m not going to debate this - it’s an oversimplification of a general strategy):

Male - 0 points. Female - 1 point. Veteran - +1 point. Minority - +1 point. Disability - +1 point (depending on the disability)

So give me Native American, female veteran with a limp caused by a war wound and you can’t win, everything else being equal... and in a lot of cases not everything else being equal either.
