On a good note, I've discovered recently that a lot of females and feminists are not even aware of this.
They always say "the draft is not an issue! when's the last time someone was drafted??"
A lot of them honestly don't know that men in the US have to sign up for the selective service at 18. Sometimes once you explain this, they change their tune regarding this issue.

[–]mechdemon 29 points30 points31 points 12 years ago (44 children) | Copy Link
if you are older than 25, its too late. however, the last time anyone was actually brought up on charges relating to selective service non-registration was 1981.

I refused to register, but a month after my birthday I received a confirmation card for registering... I suspect my father did it :/

Nah, they sent me one as well. And I know that nobody in my family did it for me. Can't say how it happened but I know that I can proudly be forced to die for my country at a moments notice

I always wondered why they compelled people to register... If they clearly can keep track of us, why not just make it an automatic thing.

Did you ever sign up for or renew a driver's license? Several states require you to "consent" to having your info shared with the Draft board before they'll issue one. Probably some where they won't even ask

Selective Service System:
The Selective Service System is an independent agency of the United States government that maintains information on those potentially subject to military conscription. Most male U.S. citizens and male immigrant non-citizens between the ages of 18 and 25 are required by law to have registered within 30 days of their 18th birthdays and must notify Selective Service within ten days of any changes to any of the information they provided on their registration cards, like a change of address. A 2010 GAO report estimated the registration rate at 92% with the names and addresses of over 16.2 million men on file. Image i

What exactly does registering do? I mean, if they need a draft, they already have all the information on everyone documented (perhaps it helps gather information on the undocumented). I've seen where you need to use your registration to do things, but it is more so a 'prove you did it'. Never did the registration take care of some issue that would have been present otherwise.

It's not very likely, which isn't quite the same thing as impossible. However, there are other consequences including ineligibility for certain kinds of employment; were I you, I'd look into it, find out the consequences of not registering and make an informed choice.

If you're going to use gender differences to argue for things that positively affect women, then it should also go in the way of men. But in this day and age, that would be completely impossible to implement in the western world, so it makes perfect sense to argue for equality even where a non equal stance may make sense, simply because if we do nothing then feminists will continue to fight for the benefits of women whilst disregarding men's issues, creating a worse and less equity based world.

Hilary could have also meant like civilian casualties. 70% of casualties in the iraq war were/are women and children civilians (source: my lecturer said this but going to search for the source he used and edit).
Feminists I know say that women not having the same opportunities (and therefore 'obligations' like this shit) in the army is a bad thing. I don't think we should be attacking feminists on this one. Makes us look like a bunch of whiny kids. This is a society issue that some people will probably split opinion on all sides of the gender argument.
Plus not all women are feminists. The proper feminists would probably hate this, non-feminists would probably not care, the weird nazi-feminists you get on the internet sometimes would probably come up with something crazy.

Thinking back to WW1 and 2 it'd be nice to have the Civilian-Military deaths ratio. Anyone got some sauce?
Because I somewhat doubt that even if Hillary did mean that civilians were to primary affected group in the whole death toll issue the death toll of men from WW1 and 2 would trump it hands down. The only area that wouldn't would be the holocaust victims but that was men, women and children so for the sake of argument we can discount that.

I just wanted to say: I completely believe you about US feminists not knowing about this.
BUT, as someone from a state with compulsory military service (Austria. Cows, not kangaroos): feminists here are very much aware of the draft, because it happens around them all the time. All men have to do 6 months of military service or 8 months of civil service (yeah, you get punished if you don't want to be in the military)!
Still, the feminists are actively defending the men-only draft, arguing that "as long as women aren't 100% equal, it's completely justified!". I'm not even kidding!

Conscription:
Conscription is the compulsory enlistment of people in some sort of national service, most often military service. Conscription dates back to antiquity and continues in some countries to the present day under various names. The modern system of near-universal national conscription for young men dates to the French Revolution in the 1790s, where it became the basis of a very large and powerful military. Most European nations later copied the system in peacetime, so that men at a certain age would serve 1–8 years on active duty and then transfer to the reserve force. Image from article i

Magic (paranormal):
Magic or sorcery is an attempt to understand, experience and influence the world using rituals, symbols, actions, gestures and language. Modern Western magicians generally state magic's primary purpose to be personal spiritual growth. Modern theories of magic may see it as the result of a universal sympathy where some act can produce a result somewhere else, or as a collaboration with spirits who cause the effect. The belief in and the practice of magic has been present since the earliest human cultures and continues to have an important religious and medicinal role in many cultures today. Magic is often viewed with suspicion by the wider community, and is sometimes practiced in isolation and secrecy. The concept of magic as a category separate from religion first appeared in Judaism, which derided as magic the practices of pagan worship designed to appease and receive benefits from gods other than Yahweh. Hanegraaff argues that magic is in fact "a largely polemical concept that has been used by various religious interest groups either to describe their own religious beliefs and practices or – more frequently – to discredit those of others." Or slow it down ffs. in 4 years Canadians went from being Canadians to feeling like a minority in their own country - at least in large cities, Vancouver is like a mini Hong Kong I'm told, every business I've see in Edmonton has had an East Indian or Pakistinian owner and all the workers are either the same or they're an Asian denomination.
I see 1 white person for every 5-10 immigrants in Calgary. I realize this is kind off topic and stuff but yeah. Stephen Harper needs to get lost he's screwed Canada over and now the world over is gonna walk all over us from the inside out >_>

Take a weekend trip to a major city. Some US cities are pretty multicultural, though in a more American way. I don't know how to explain what that means, but there is something distinctly different about an American and Canadian immigrant dominated area.
Either way it's pretty great. I'll hear 20 languages before my day ends.
It's different in Scotland. I love taking trips to London though, as you said. So many languages. The markets are fantastic.

My issue is white people are starting to have major issues (so far in my experience it's mostly Ontario) finding jobs. Because why pay someone who won't settle for the lowest possible wage? All the diversity laws means they are required to hire foreigns but can just ignore local populace. Some cities go so far as to refuse to hire their own people. Sault Ste. Marie wouldn't look at you unless you wrote a Toronto address on your resume then suddenly everyone calls. So glad I moved out west even if stuff is so much more expensive. I've also noticed that out of every forienger I've seen, only one drove a car decently and followed the rules of the road >_>

Living with other races is literally hell!
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Not exactly what I meant. I'm not a racist. But the longer I'm here, the more excluded I feel. There are dozens of campus clubs for asians and indians, and none for just anyone, and jobs are nearly impossible to find for me since they're all owned by someone who only hires within their own race or family. I had two jobs that ended badly because i got frustrated when my co-workers and even my boss would talk amongst themselves and around me in their own language and I never felt welcome. The businesses are also incredibly unreliable, I've been trying to get driving lessons with an Indian guy since last october (after I paid!) and they keep giving me excuses, the run around, and not calling me back. After I threatened legal action, they give me one three weeks ago. Since then it's been just as hard to schedule after he made a last-minute cancellation.
Living as a white minority can be just as frustrating and difficult as a person of colour in a largely white homogenous area.

This has always been the most blatant evidence of feminist hypocrisy. It is beyond my imagination how the hell women have been evading selective service and conscription for decades without being called cowards, and still the entire West abide by feminism.

Ok I totally understand your frustration. It did have a good answer at one point in time. This is an old issue that does need to be updated but its the least of our problems. When this was made the thought of a female in the military past being a nurse wasnt really even thought of. Now with females wishing to become infantry, though currently a slim few are even capable of doing so, this policy needs to change either forcing female to sign up or doing away with the draft all together. Even now there is a surplus of men and women signing up to join the military so much so that some branches have a waiting list.
[–]Savergn[S] 11 points12 points13 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I don't know. I don't believe someone should have to die for something they don't want to, because if the case is that there's not that many people that would willingly die for their country, the country must be doing something wrong.
[–]JudgeWhoAllowsStuff 9 points10 points11 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
People shouldn't have to pay taxes to fund a war they don't want either.
[–]havingread 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I wouldn't call that a good answer. There's more to a war than the front lines. Factories and such. Women aren't drafted to work, but men are drafted to the front which, along with the horrors, also entails work.
[–]Snowfire870 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I never actually gave the "Good answer" just stated that at its time women would have caused more trouble being in the military because it would have be housewife to hand grenades. The times that the draft had been active it had be for more or less front line work. Now a days it more reasonable to draft women because the mentality that was the era is so much different than it is now. Or ya know just get rid of the draft all together which would be a better idea.

[–]Wrecksomething 6 points7 points8 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
This has always been the most blatant evidence of feminist hypocrisy.
WW1 era suffragettes fought discriminatory conscription. Emmeline Pankhurst and others called for universal compulsory service and insisted on Women's Rights to Serve.
When the US reinstated the draft in 1980, feminists groups opposed the draft but also opposed instituting it only for men. The 1981 lawsuit brought against the draft included the ACLU argument that it ''significantly damaged the cause of women's rights". The National Organization for Women (largest feminist group in the US) and League of Women Voters entered amicus curiae arguing it relegated women to second-class citizenship.
Most recently feminists have been celebrating the decision to finally "permit" women in combat. Though the history of this throughout and especially today is that women were already in those roles.
I actually can't recall feminists support discriminating conscription. On the other side, there are anti-feminists like Phyllis Schlafly who do insist on this discrimination:
The real war against women is the announced plan of the Obama administration, using outgoing Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta as the fall guy, to assign women for the first time in American history to fight our nation’s enemies in military ground combat. That’s real war, with real guns, real bullets and real deaths. This war doesn’t involve only women who have volunteered to serve in our military. It’s a real war against all 18-year-old American girls, because for the first time in our nation’s history they will be required to sign up for the draft and be ready for a letter from Selective Service ordering them to report for military duty.

And anti-feminists outraged by the decision to put women in combat.
the only reason to pursue [women in combat units] is to placate feminism’s insatiable and narcissistic drive for absolute official equality between the sexes.
[–]Watermelon_Salesman 5 points6 points7 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
That's all well and everything, but you realize I'm not talking about feminists defending the draft, right?
I'm talking about feminists saying that men have it way easier, that "women are the ones who suffer at war", as Hillary said, and the whole "check your privilege" bullshit.
Men are and have always been treated as disposable things. The feminist hipocrisy is in failing to see that, and painting the exact opposite picture.
[–]solancho -4 points-3 points-2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I think Hilary meant that like civilian casualties. 70% of casualties in the iraq war were/are women and children civilians (source: my lecturer said this but going to search for the source he used and edit).
[–]Suitecake 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
To be fair, when I bring this up with feminists I know, they have without exception advocated for a consistent application for men and women. Usually that means getting rid of the draft entirely, but a few have said that women should also be obligated. No one has tried to defend a man-only obligation.
As for feminist institutions, since 1980, NOW publicly supported the abolition of the draft, and if not that, the inclusion of women in the draft.
"women have been evading selective service" is about the most bizarre way you could paint this scenario.

Milton Friedman helped the US military become an all-volunteer force, for which I am most grateful. Unfortunately, there's always that nagging possibility that, if worst comes to worst, men may be forced to die in combat for the sake of everyone else, aka, women.

If draft is ever reinstated, hopefully people will make big enough of a deal to petition that women be required to sign up, as well. However, I'd rather it just never be reinstated.
As much as I want to fight for equality, it would break my heart to see the love of my life forced into a situation like this. So, I'd just rather that nobody required to sign up.

[–]AustNerevar 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
It was really bad with Vietnam in the 70's. Young men who were morally opposed to the war often ran away to Canada to dodge draft. There was a widespread cultural disgust for these "goldbricking draft-dodgers".
We haven't had an active draft since the 80's and nobody's been prosecuted for not signing up since then, but the laws are still on the books. If draft is ever reinstated, I think that, in these modern times there may be a greater resistance to it. Or maybe I'm just being naive.
It's pretty dehumanizing, though, to know that I am required to do this, by law, simply because I was born with a penis. I don't care what bullshit feminists spout, they don't know true discrimination until they are potentially required to die for worthless politicians in pointless political wars, simply because they were born with the wrong gender. No matter what discrimination they believe they face, nothing compares to being forced to die and to kill for something you may not believe in.

It's what was basically called the Draft a long time ago. If the president declares we are in a national emergency, he can call forth all those who have signed up for Selective Service and force them to joined the armed forces. If you don't sign up, you can see the consequences. Jail, Fines, or both. This only required of males.
[–]Mexatron 4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

[–]Paladin327 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
if there was a need for it, yes. but, since vietnam, america's armed forces have been big enough from voluntary enlistments, drafting hasn't been necessary. and if there was a national emergency that requires a lot of manpower, america's pool of first responders (emt, firefighters, police) national guard/reservists, and other positions (which may or may not be military, don't remember) is so big, that calling upon just 10% of that pool, that's greater than the population of st louis

Also don't forget the threat of being prosecuted for not signing up and could face 5 years in prison or a fine of $250k or both. Even though that hasn't happened in quite a long time, the threat is still there. Women do not face the threat of a huge fine or prison time for not signing up for some bullshit. But some how we live in a patriarchy, some how this benefits us men as being forced to sign up for a draft, while women do not have to, while they are afforded the privilege of getting student financial aid, govt. employment and so on without having to sign up.

Medical leave I suppose.
[–]statist_steve 4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
When I was in the military, some women would get pregnant to get out of having to work on a ship. Normally you alternate, four years out to sea and then four on shore. But, often the women would be on the ships for a short time before getting pregnant and moving off.
As an aside, a lot of women in the military are great and really pull their own weight, but sometimes you get those who don't, and it sucks to have to then do their jobs on top of yours. Sometimes it's minor things like carrying out heavy garbage bags of food at the end of food service. But then there are those times when you are woken up at 3am to stand their four hour watch because they have cramps. Rage inducing.
[–]DiscoPandaKungFu 10 points11 points12 points 12 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
Good question, I don't think I've ever seen that point addressed by anyone in the MRM.

[–]IgnatiusBSamson 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Whether intentional or not, the number of female servicemembers who have to leave deployment (be it from a Navy ship, a FOB, or whatever) is incredibly high. Not only does the government spend a considerable sum to train those servicemembers prior to deployment, more money is lost when medevac'ed out/only serving part of deployment.
For the record, naval ships are the worst. Think of it as a floating college campus.
as someone with 2 cousins in the military, one in the marines (now a captain and being deployed to help the shut down in Afghanistan) and one in the navy, I just asked them about this and they said they've never experienced instances like this.
Sure you get ass hats in both genders trying to slack off.

Same as a guy with asthma or flat feet. It's selective service
Just like how some young men aren't forced to go if there is a family situation that need them to stay home, I don't think pregnant women would be required to go either. If it is ever reinstated, then women should certainly be required to sign up, as well, but with a pregnancy, you wouldn't only be putting an incapacitated woman in danger, but an unborn infant who has no business being in a war situation.

Personally, I think of 'men's rights' as shorthand for 'libertarian issues as they apply to men' so I'd argue that nobody has the right to force anybody else to fight and die in their wars at all, men or women. I think that understanding libertarianism and the non-aggression principle answers a lot of the potential you'd have about 'men's rights' before they're asked. Disclaimer: I'm not an active member of this sub so my opinion may not align with the majority here. I basically watched a couple girlwriteswhat videos and thought "yeah this makes sense" and subscribed. She has a good video about it if you search girlwriteswhat libertarian. [–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link
I mean, does this aggravate you because you may be forcefully drafted to the military or because women don't have to sign up for this?
In my opinion, while a draft is horrifying among the general population (hence, Vietnam) conscription isn't the worst thing in the world. 1 - 2 years of service isn't incredibly daunting, and once the idea has been integrated into society it becomes much more accepted. I live the UAE and they just made it a requirement for all young men to do a year (don't quote me on the exact number), which I think is great. Lots of these kids don't even speak arabic because their culture has become so overly westernized, and they've grown up in a huge boom stage of the countries' economy, leaving them a tad too entitled a lot of the time. What I'm saying is that it's not really that detrimental to society as a whole, and the long term benefits weigh out the short term costs a whole ton.
As for women not being forced to follow the same process, I do believe that is an issue. That's straight unfair and I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of feminists (or just, citizens) protested the idea of the draft all together.
In all honesty though this won't become an issue unless the men are actually called to arms. Nobody will care outside of the men involved unless the government exercises their power. As it lays dormant no consequences great enough to spur the attention of the people is prevalent.
[–]Fallen_Glory 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
It's the fact that you are forced to put your life on the line, 1-2 years of military service on home soil isn't terrible, 1-2 overseas is fucking hell. I wouldn't put up with getting bossed around if I was forced in to the military, if you were disrespectful to me you wouldn't get my respect back, I don't care what rank you are, you forced me to be here, you respect my ass.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
I mean, yeah, it's pretty serious. However, I still hold strong that all able bodied young men should be subject to at least some minimal form of service. An ex marine told me not too long ago his reasoning for supporting the same issue, "It wasn't until I joined the corps that I understood the price we all pay for freedom. I think you neglect to respect that cost when don't you fully understand it."
[–]Fallen_Glory 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
So you think people should be forced against their will with no option out to put their lives on the line and possible die.
Yes. Even when you say it like that. As I said before, the costs outweigh the benefits.
Instill some patriotism in the people: just because the men get involved doesn't mean everyone else doesn't. You have a son, a brother, a nephew, a friend's cousin in the military so you support it. You learn the cost of having someone put their life on the line and people become less sensitive to sending the men overseas to die.
The men become disciplined, productive members of society. They learn skills they can give back to the economy and a sense of comradeship among all else is built. You can take any two men from any part of the country, put them in a room together, and on some level they will understand one another's struggle. A mutual respect is found, despite differences in race or upbringing.
To top it all off, at any given time, all of the men in your country have been formally trained to defend themselves and their land. Not that it is the main benefit in any way, but having that large of a supply of ready and willing soldiers has its benefits.
[–]Fallen_Glory 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
So you basically want forced patriotism. You want to force people into being showed that cost. You basically want to take freedom out of it and just force people in to understanding what someone else went through. I'm sorry but this is just the most idiotic thing to me, I guess I don't understand where you are coming from.
When you say the men become disciplined and productive members of society you act like they couldn't have been like that before. I know I will be a productive member of society based on my work ethic and what I want to do. The skills I learn in the military will not give back to the economy, I want to go in to infectious disease in med school, I won't learn shit in the military that will help with my career to give back in to the economy.
Maybe you won't, but who's to say others won't? Mechanics, computer programmers, pilots, engineers, the list goes on. And you want to go to med school? Be a field medic. Get hands on experience in high pressure situations that will teach you how to handle yourself when you need to. I have no doubt in my mind that you would learn things in the army that give you spillover benefits into other parts of your life.
All this aside, I am left to assume we come from somewhat different cultures which makes it hard for us to find a foreground. I'm half Turkish, and in Turkey conscription is a big deal. We even have a saying that goes "All Turkish men are born soldiers". It is something that most of the youth don't necessarily want to do, but something they respect knowing that they must.
It's a process started by Turkey's father, Ataturk, who is respected there like Jesus in the catholic church (no joke - the country stops on November 10th at 9:05am to commemorate his death.)
Conscription is just part of life there. It's expected and I think Turkey is better off with it than without it, and I would argue any country would be the same.
Ataturk:
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (pronounced [musˈtäfä ceˈmäl ätäˈtyɾc]; 19 May 1881 (conventional) – 10 November 1938) was a Turkish army officer, reformist statesman, and the first President of Turkey. He is credited with being the founder of the Republic of Turkey. His surname, Atatürk (meaning "Father of the Turks"), was granted to him in 1934 and forbidden to any other person by the Turkish parliament. Atatürk was a military officer during World War I. Following the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in World War I, he led the Turkish National Movement in the Turkish War of Independence. Having established a provisional government in Ankara, he defeated the forces sent by the Allies. His military campaigns led to victory in the Turkish War of Independence. Atatürk then embarked upon a program of political, economic, and cultural reforms, seeking to transform the former Ottoman Empire into a modern, secular, and democratic nation-state. Under his leadership, thousands of new schools were built, primary education was made free and compulsory, and women were given equal civil and political rights, while the burden of taxation on peasants was reduced. The principles of Atatürk's reforms, upon which modern Turkey was established, are referred to as Kemalism.

I can get hands on experience in high pressure situations that will teach me how to handle myself when I need to while working in my field. I don't need to go through the military to achieve that. I am from the US and I honestly just disagree with our military almost entirely, I am however a citizen of Canada along with the US and if I had to join a military it would be Canada's because I feel they are not a walking horror story, their purpose is to preserve peace not throw drone strikes around wherever they please.

Never said I was going to join the military, if I joined I would be fine with putting up with all of those, if I get drafted, not so much.
The point I am making is that they would get you in line just like everyone else. Short of actually physically deserting, you would have a very hard time not being affected by military indoc, if only to avoid more torture.

I think this is relevant.
In the 70's, there was a proposed amendment to the Constitution. It was the Equal Rights Amendment, and it was to women what the civil rights act of 1964 was to African Americans. It passed through congress but not the states. Ironically, one group on particular opposed it and led to it's downfall. Feminist groups. The amendment would have eliminated the male-only draft and made it harder for women to win custody in divorce cases, because of truly equal rights.
More information please. Any links?

Equal Rights Amendment:
The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) was a proposed amendment to the United States Constitution designed to guarantee equal rights for women. The ERA was originally written by Alice Paul and, in 1923, it was introduced in the Congress for the first time. In 1972, it passed both houses of Congress and went to the state legislatures for ratification. The resolution in Congress that proposed the amendment set a ratification deadline of March 22, 1979. Through 1977, the amendment received 35 of the necessary 38 state ratifications. Five of those states later rescinded their ratifications before the 1979 deadline, though the validity of this is disputed. In 1978, a joint resolution of Congress extended the ratification deadline to June 30, 1982, but no further states ratified the amendment before the passing of the second deadline. Several feminist organizations, disputing the validity and/or the permanence of the ratification deadline, and also disputing the validity of the five recissions, continue to work at the federal and state levels for the adoption of the ERA. I can't believe I am 35 and this still surprises me. It just seems so obviously, blatantly sexist. I thought we allowed women in combat now? So we don't require them to sign up for the draft? I'm so confused. :s

It's your priveledge to be denied government services and jobs unless you agree to join the death lottery.
Yeah I'm confused why the government thinks this is okay. Women can be in combat, but not the front lines I think, purely because men are typically stronger and all that.

It's an ad for registering for selective service, aka. the draft or conscription. You know, being forced into the military. I don't know how it works in the US, but in my country you still have the right to refuse if selected, and you can't be sent into actual combat as a draftee.

Ahh, I see. Sort of like in South Korea where they're forced to do 2 years of service?
It's a bit different, you aren't force to join the military and do 2~3 years of service like in South Korea or Israel, but you (if you are male) have to sign a paper that says if the president thinks there is a national emergency you can be forced to join the armed forces.

Ah yes, conscription. Always been opposed to this, old people here in Australia often say that they should bring back national service and as someone who was in the Army and often contemplates returning to it I am fully against it. I don't consider it ethical or justifiable in the least. It says on that pamphlet that not registering may loose your entitlements to a large degree of social services - that pisses me off most of all. If a citizen looses access to those, then he shouldn't have to ever pay taxes. But no, I bet he'd still have to pay taxes throughout his life despite being denied the benefits he is paying for. It's disgraceful.

I made the choice when I was 14 that I did not want to join the US military, I do not have what it takes to be in the military, I don't have the patience to deal with idiots yelling at me in basic nor do I have the ability to kill someone with a gun, it would weigh on me to much.
I will have to sign up for the selective service in 6 months when I turn 18 and I am dreading it. I know the chances of a draft happening are low but still, the chances are there. With Russia pulling all the shit they've been pulling I'm scared that we may go to war with them and there will be a draft. I can't not sign up because I need the government loans for med school. It's fucking stupid, it's our "right" to sign up for this bullshit to be able to afford social services that women are handed without having to go through this.
It's total bullshit, I want to save lives, not take them.
[–]awwwwyehmutherfurk 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
While I don't think the military is exactly what you're cracking it up to be, being in the Army doesn't mean you're going to have do any form of combat - but then again, when you volunteer you ACTUALLY have some control over that, instead of being forced into things like with the Draft. You can go into medical or construction rolls where you help an extraordinary amount of people at a level you might never see in a safe western country - however, as soon as that uniform goes on you are also a legitimate target - which to me is one of the most fucked up things about it, because it demeans one of the most important things to me, the protection of civilians. Civilians are not targets, you cant kill them, they need to be protected because gods be damned, that is the purpose of a military. But if everyman between 18-25 has to register for the draft, what REALLY gives them protection? Why should I not target that portion of the population? At any moment, the government can send you a letter saying "You're a soldier now" bam, you are a target. Thats fucked up. Its not the same as say, targeting people over 17 1/2 here in Australia, because war or not they dont have to do a god damn thing, but you - you HAVE to be a soldier, you are automatically a threat and a valuable military resource, weather you like it or not.
That enrages me, I can't stand any form of conscription, I see no excuse for it. SOmepeople say to me "But what if your country is being invaded?" my answer stays the same. If you're being invaded, and you know the armed forces need more personnel in order to win, then its your choice. You join, and help win, or you and millions of others might go "I don't want to". That is your right, that should be everyones right, they just have to deal with a new nation, a new flag, and new ideals, for good or bad. I'm not going to think any less of someone who does not fight, I understand, war is terrifying (I'm fortunate I never was deployed) and is an amalgamation of all of humanities worst aspects (and its best).
Conscription (and the Draft is very much that, regardless of what other Americans have tried to tell me in the past) is to me, a vile, vile human rights abuse and is no different to slavery. You have no choice. "Do as I say or you get 5 years in prison and all financial aid from the government is cut despite you have to pay taxes" is not a choice. Good gods the US was helped founded on the "No taxation without representation" principle. I'm not American, but I believe firmly in that statement, and I don't see much representation for the people who refuse the draft.
I'm sorry, I know I'm preaching to the quire here, you don't like it either, but it pisses me off at a whole new level. On the brightside, training really isn't all that bad, and the job itself isn't all that bad. If you go into the right stream, you can do an awful lot of good. THat being said, I am Australian, and we are guilty of considerably less war crimes then the US is. If it looks like a draft is going to happen, build up your pacifist case, or try to beat them to the punch and volunteer, get yourself into a non combat corps, especially with med school you might be able get a free doctors education. Not sure entirely how the US runs things like that though, heard it is not quite what we get.

Future med student for me, I would be fine working in the hospitals or whatever they have overseas, as long as I'm not put in direct danger.
I just tweeted about this and I had a guy I know call me an idiot and say I wasn't being a man, I WASN'T BEING A MAN BECAUSE I DON'T WANT TO PUT MY LIFE OUT THERE. WHAT LOGIC IS THAT? I wasn't being a man because I want it abolished or having women forced to enter as well. I wasn't a man because I won't put my life down for my country, which I wouldn't, I won't put my life down for either of the countries I am a citizen of.
I love everything you said, it's fucking brilliant. Preach to the choir all you want, I'll be here listening. If a draft happens I will go to Canada, it labels me a traitor or whatever but I will not join the military, especially ours, I believe ours is a walking fucking plague. Half of it is made up of idiots who just want to kill everything, the other half is a fucked up thing that commits terrible atrocities, there are very few good things about our military in my eyes.

You can tell that man that, words from someone who has ACTUALLY been in the army "If you think not wanting to go to war makes you less of a man, then not only are you an idiot, but you're an insult to all the men who have died in war". You ask any, any veteran of any war if they think war should happen, if men should have to go and die, they'll likely tell you no. There isn't a single soldier on the planet that is mentally healthy that thinks war is good. Some, like myself, believe that in some situations it is necessary, but even when the goal is to stop Nazis, war is never good. People dying horrible is never good. It is sad, and painful. A sergeant I knew once saw one of his close friends killed by mortar fire. Another bloke I knew was in the infantry. He never got deployed, but his platoon did without him. Some of them had their legs blown of in Afghanistan, other have since committed suicide after returning. Not wanting to go through that doesn't mean "You're not a man", it sure as hell doesn't make an idiot. These guys were all doing good things over in Afghanistan, most of Australia's effort involved building bridges to enable effective trade, help build schools, retrain the Afghan Police and Military so that hopefully when w eleave, extremists don't take over again, aswell as set up Trade schools so the average man can learn how to be a carpenter inorder to build up the countries skill base. THe infantry and combat units primarily conduct patrols to draw out taliban attacks, so they can prevent the contstruction units from being attacked, they conduct patrols to locate weapons cashes, to hopefully prevent Taliban forces from destroying the bridges - which lets them constrict trade, prevent economic growth so they can keep a stranglehold on the community. All of this is good, but war is not. My friends old platoon mates hving his legs blown to pieces, thats not good. All the men who have killed themselves because they are too scared or don't know how to get help (Primarily due to the gender stereotypes that the fuck knuckle scum bucket bloke you know continues to reinforce with his bullshit) that is not good. Its awful. War is awful. It should never happen. Sometimes is does, sometimes because it needs to, sometimes because the wrong kinds of people are just the right personal distance from conflict.
I can understand people still willing to join the army even after what I have said, because they believe the risks are worth what they believe in. It is, after all, how I feel. Like I may have mentioned before, but I still think about returning to the army some days. If we ever had to deploy soldiers to Ukraine, I'd have half a mind to rejoin. I have friends still in the army. Gods, last Anzac Day (April 25th, an Australian day where we remember all the soldiers, airmen, sailors, officers, nurses, men and women who have died whilst serving) Dawn service I remember crying. I have not lost anyone myself, but there is a poem that is read in every service, in every town around the country, every single anzac day, it always ends with "Lest we forget", but there is this line, "They shall not grow old, as we shall grow old". This was my first Anzac service outside of the military, god that line hurt a lot. All I could think about is some of my close friends, in their careers, going to war, being deployed, especially with the tensions in Eastern Europe at the moment making those feel very real. They will continue, go to war, and be blown to pieces. I will not. It felt awful, I felt ashamed, like I'd abandoned these guys.
Jesus, I'm sorry for rambling, I will get back to my point. Like I said, I understand why people will want to join even after what I have said, because I am still one of those people and I still believe that the risks I would have faced were worth what I am protecting. But I perfectly understand people who have no desire to join the military, who want to stay far from it as they possible can. I hate conscription, national service, the draft, whatever pisspot excuse of a government decides to call it.
Don't listen to that guy you know, his attitude makes things worse, the agenda he continues to push is what helps men think they need to be strong, stoic warriors, its what often prevents soldiers from getting the help they need, its that attitude that was present in the old, feminist group that would hand white feathers out to man who did not go off to fight in the great war - because standing balls deep in mud in a trench in France is what a man does. To hell with that.
[–]Fallen_Glory 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I will show him your response, thank you very much for your thorough replies. If it means anything, I don't think you abandoned them, it is their choice to join the military with the risks involved, some decide to stay some don't.

I know, but I also chose to leave. Sometimes I regret it, sometimes I'm glad of it. Doesn't matter though, I'm young and have a whole life to make regrets heh. I'm about to begin study to become a teacher now days, so atleast in one small way I can do my part to stamp out the "Be a man" mentality. Honestly, I've lived my life with the idea of treating everyone equally, man or woman. Treat people like people, be a person. Thats the idea.

Women are allowed in combat, but not front lines because men are typically stronger (I think? My memory is vague I'll have to check a source). So how the government thinks this is okay is beyond me. Primarily because it's such removal of rights. This should be a 'what the fuck government' issue, not an 'i hate feminists issue'.
[–]Hypersapien 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It shouldn't matter that men are typically stronger. Some men will be strong enough to handle it, some won't. Some women will be strong enough to handle it, some won't. I agree that there will be more men that are strong enough, but that isn't a reason to eliminate women from the running entirely.

The most obvious element of female privilege in relation to the draft is they could be drafted and still not serve in combat...there's a large percentage of rear echelon support roles that could be filled by women. But we won't even do that to the precious little princesses.

With the huge budget cuts and the largest manning cuts the military has ever seen, why is this even still a thing?
Look at the US government's expenditures. In 2013 defense made up almost 18% of the budget source
2013 United States federal budget:
The 2013 United States federal budget is the budget to fund government operations for the fiscal year 2013, which is October 2012–September 2013. The original spending request was issued by President Barack Obama in February 2012. The actual appropriations for fiscal year 2013 was enacted in two appropriations bills in September 2012 and March 2013 by the full Congress, in accordance with the United States budget process. The Budget Control Act of 2011 mandates caps on discretionary spending, which under current law will be lowered beginning in January 2013 to remove $1.2 trillion of spending over the following ten years. In addition, several temporary tax cuts were scheduled to expire at the beginning of the 2013 calendar year, including the 2001 and 2003 Bush tax cuts on income, capital gains, and estate tax, which had been extended in a 2010 tax deal, as well as a payroll tax cut that began as a result of the 2010 deal and had been most recently extended in an early 2012 tax deal. The combination of sudden spending cuts and tax increases has led to concerns about significant negative effects on the economy in the wake of the weak recovery from the recession that began in 2007. This is just wrong...it would be equal if either all of us had to or none of us had to.
Israel wised up to that, at least as far as equality goes. All citizens there are required to do military service for a certain time. Ideally, there should be no selective service, period.
That, and the fact that they are trying to represent the idea in a way where they maintain some false moral high ground is idiotic and insulting.

As where I'm all for women being drafted just like men, it just makes less sense in some scenarios.
There is the irrefutable fact that if you drafted EVERYONE in that age range, reguardless of gender, then you have eliminated everyone in the most fertile reproductive period of their life.
Are we to leave the elderly in charge of the children? What if we went to war with say China or Russia and it took our entire nation's population of ages 18-40 (just an example of an all-out WWIII), that's literally everyone within child-bearing range.
I'd say instead of making the draft gender orientated, why not make it physically/mentally fit orientated? Imagine an 18 y/o girl with the physique of a 12 y/0 stick out there fighting? Or how about an 18 y/o 300lbs dude who can't reach down to grab his gun? Or an 18 y/o guy who can't even run 10 ft without his inhaler or lift something over 35 lbs?
Drafting based on gender is an outdated way of doing things. This should be changed already.
TL;DR Women planning on being mothers soon (not yet pregnant) and those who are unfit physically/mentally should be automatically excluded. The only reason I think women who are planning pregnancy should be excluded is because they shouldn't be out fighting with a baby in there, not because women should be pampered more.
Furthermore, the age range of 18 is way too low in my opinion. At 18 I would have run around with my head cut off or commit suicide immediately upon being informed I was drafted. I do not deserve the freedom I was given. I admit it. But that doesn't change the fact that the draft is entirely unfair as it stands. That athletic girl on track should get drafted INSTEAD OF the wimpy guy.

We don't need people making stabs where they don't belong and that don't make sense. O.o (Unless that was just sarcasm - in which case, carry on)
[–]Fhwqhgads 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Not sarcasm. Just an exaggeration of our society's "men are disposable and women are precious" mentality.
[–]Lawtonfogle -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Why not just push for a law that only those who are registered with selective services can vote. We don't discriminate based on gender, we are just saying that if you want a say in how the country runs, you gotta ensure some of your skin is in the game? I wonder what the response to that would be?
lol So you're saying no one who isn't in the military has no skin in the game?
