Its fear mongering garbage. Every choice ends with being sexually harassed. This is not a reflection of the real world.
[–]Steampunk_Moustache53 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Not only is it not a reflection of the real world, it's not even a reflection of their garbage '1 in 4' statistic.
[–]elebrin14 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Not only that, but even then life goes on after being harassed. The game sure doesn't.
[–]ihateusernamesalot-15 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
no shit it's not a "reflection of the real world," bruh. the game literally tells you that the point is that women can and do get harassed regardless of what they wear or where they go. It's just saying that women aren't responsible for their harassment.
Y'all are way overthinking it lol
[–]DorsiaReservation7 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
It's called 'female experience simulator' for fucks sake, which implies that this is what it's like to be female in general. It's bullshit.
[–]ihateusernamesalot-11 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
no it doesn't. When it explicitly tells you that your assumptions about it are wrong and clearly explains the message, maybe you should take it at face value instead of manufacturing outrage...
[–]TRPACC-82 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
A guy can't really make that statement, its like a woman saying how men experience something - when they can't possibly do it - we would need to do a study on attractive women's experience to get the answer to it.
[–]moneykilz49 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
A guy can completely say that. Everytime you walk out the door, you dont get sexually harassed... It really isnt the real worl at all.
[–]TRPACC-47 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Yeah well obviously, but he can't speak for womens experience.
[–]Sir_Derpsworth35 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
So you agree that he is right... but he can't say that because he has a penis instead of a vagina? ...right, great logic there.
[–]ihateusernamesalot-8 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
gender is not determined by genitals
[–]Delixcroix8 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
.... Psssst. Yes it is. Gender isn't determined by Mental Disorders or SJWs.
It also certainly isn't determined by European imperialists imposing a false binary when people had already been figuring out and defining gender for thousands of years.
But you can see pretty easily how genitals don't determine gender if you aren't willfully ignorant (good luck with that one here lol). If a man loses his penis in some accident, does he stop being a man? No. So it must be more complicated than that.
[–]Waymanrules0 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
No gender is determined by your genitals your sexuality is determined by you, you can dress as a women with make up and all but in the end you are still a man this is not me being hateful either I fully support people who want to do whatever they want sexual as long as they do it with another consenting adult but you cannot say a person with a penis and genetics of a man is not a man ...... Just saying
[–]ihateusernamesalot2 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
There's no such thing as "genetics of a man." Some people are XX and have a penis and develop typically male. Some people have "ambiguous genitalia." Some people have XX and XY in different cells in their bodies. Some people have neither XX or XY. Etc.
You don't know what you're talking about. Just sayin
[–]Waymanrules1 point 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Yeah your right I'm not a scientist or anything and I probably wrote this the wrong way
Thank you for acknowledging that. Gender is much more complicated than what we are taught in elementary school, and it doesn't help anyone to deny that. Especially people claiming to be a movement for gender equality.
[–]Psuedofem1 point 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Well, actually you're wrong.
Sex is determined by biology, gender identity is largely cultural, sexuality has biological factors and it's possible that being transgender does too.
Yeah I said it wrong I was trying to say what you choose to identify as does not change what you were born as be it male female transgender or something else I don't know about
Fair enough. It's funny to see how easily MRA's are prone to accepting when they're wrong, but feminist types are incapable of that level of thought.
Thank you being open minded is important to me and though I can't speak for everyone here I like to think is for this sub and people of the movement are as well
[–]Delixcroix-1 point 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
No it actually isn't If you are born a man you die a man you delusional Twad. Maiming a male body to make it appear female doesn't make it female. Or even Trans. It makes it a mutilated human being who is male. All the plastic Surgery and drugs on the planet earth doesn't change your birth gender. Try having the Intelligence level of a goat for a second and realize an animals Gender doesn't change if mutilated or if mentally confused.
You can spend your whole lif crying Trans but now law, No operation. No amount of Drugs is going to change what you really are. You don't get to decide. It is decided by a simple Twist of Genetics. You are either XX or XY. Now kindly shut the hell up with your SJW Trash and stop feeling near my science you insect of a Feminist.
You are wrong. All of natural Biology of Mammals is Correct. Nothings Complicated your just psycho.
[–]LadyLuq0 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
What about people who are neither XX nor XY?
[–]ihateusernamesalot-1 point 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Damn bro, u really emotional. Maybe take a breath and go outside and read a book.
[–]TRPACC-29 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I'm saying that neither men nor women can dictate what the others experiences are.
Feminists dictate that men have the privilege of never feeling fear alone at night. Its the same thing when mra's reverse it and claim to know what women's experiences are.
[–]anon44529 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I agree with this last point, but we aren't claiming to know what the women's experiences are.
We claim to know what the experiences are not, which can be demonstrably disproven.
[–]Okymyo16 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I can't claim that every time I go to the street as a man I get insulted and people throw tomatoes at me, and when you say that's not true I just scream "YOU'RE NOT A MAN YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT MY LIFE IS LIKE".
[–]TRPACC-3 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I'd say I'm a man too, and I don't experience that.
That's why I said you would need to do a study on hot girls experiences to find out the truth
[–]5th_Law_of_Robotics2 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
You have experienced that. But you can't speak for all men.
[–]Psuedofem6 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
You say out of one side of your mouth, while defending a program that attempts to dictate to everyone what the "Female experience" is.
You realize now that you're being a hypocrite.
[–]TRPACC0 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Point to where I dictated what the female experience is.
Your logic is the same type that is used against warren farrell, because he reported the fact that some people said they found incest positive, they accused him of supporting incest.
Because I'm stating the fact that men cannot know what female experiences are, you are accusing me of supporting that program.
[–]2095conash2 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
he reported the fact that some people said they found incest positive, they accused him of supporting incest.
Bit different, he reported on what individuals said about their own experience, this simulator is trying to speak as to what EVERY woman's experience is like.
Because I'm stating the fact that men cannot know what female experiences are
In actuality, NO ONE can know what the 'true' female experience is. Not even women. Have they experienced it? Absolutely, at least assuming it exists. But can you tell me which experiences you've had that are the result 100% of you being male, of you being X age, of you living in X country, of you being X race, of you having X family, of you having X experiences, of your brain being X way, of you interacting with X friends, and every other part of yourself 100% and completely? Probably not, you've dealt with your experiences, but you haven't experienced my experiences, and every other person who fits into any one of those categories with you, thus it is literally impossible, unless you get EVERY one of them together and you all agree on something, for you to know absolutely what the common experience is.
You can guess at it, you can make assumptions based on your life, but if anyone stands up who'd fit into the group and says that they never experienced that, then you've at BEST found what is a COMMON experience for that group, NOT what is the UNIVERSAL experience for that group. Something like this, a simulator that by it's name is trying to teach 'men' what it's like to be a woman, is trying to suggest that what it says are in fact universal experiences. If it said that all women go to Mars by the age of 5, the fact that I'm not a woman doesn't mean that I couldn't find that to be complete bullshit.
This simulator was created by people, people can be wrong, they are not every single woman in the world, and thus we are not speaking 'over' women by saying that this simulator does not reflect the universal experience of women. Until at least 51% of women of the world get together to decide on what the universal woman experience is, stuff like this claiming to have such an experience (at least it's name claims it to) is what are talking over people, if we assume the 1 in 4 number (which is highly inflated and told individual women that they were raped even when they didn't think they were, denying their experiences), that leaves 75% of women having an experience dissimilar to this simulator. Just like we can be sure that if it said that all women go to Mars, we can also argue that the idea that all women are sexually assaulted is wrong, THEY made the initial claim, and until evidence exists to support it (aside from maybe 100 women out of a total of BILLIONS of women who made this, that's not even .00001% of all women speaking for all women, for all WE know they're incorrectly attributing believing that perhaps they live in areas that have high sexual assault and are incorrectly attributing such a factor irrelevant of being female to being female, thus all women who live in places not like that have a much different experience thus denying the universally or even commonality of this experience).
Your argument only works if the entirety (or at least majority) of those whom the experience would apply to agree upon the experience. When we're talking about say my individual experience, I am 100% of such people and thus no one can really deny my experience to me (unless they're denying a part of it they were physically there to witness, but then that is an experience I shared with them and thus that specific thing, if it was just us two, I am only 50% of and thus not the majority). But we're not looking at 'One woman's experience simulator', we're looking at the 'Female experience simulator', implying that ALL women experience this, or at least more than half of them. We have reason to believe that no more than 33% of women are sexually assaulted throughout their lives (the 1 in 3 number, while obviously it's usually not believed here, an idea that 1 in 2 is far more absurd, thus it's 'no higher' than that, even if we do believe that it's far lower). It's not as proven as say the fact that no human has been to Mars yet, but a fundamental understanding of reality shows that someone's physical experiences are set events that have happened, they are not subject to change, while what a person feels about them or views them can, the physical actions which took place cannot be changed (with current technology at least). Thus with this understanding of reality if we have evidence (studies that ask women about their experiences) that suggest a less than 51% of them have experienced sexual assault, 100 women saying that all women get groped or raped or whatever in their lives does not altar the past to make it happen.
We cannot deny a consensus of the afflicted parties experience, but here we're looking at .00001% or less of women speaking about what over 3 billion women have or have not experienced. Just as if 10 people were put in a room over night, and one of them came out missing an arm, so trying to figure out what happened I asked all 10 of them. If one of them (whether the one missing the arm or not) said the arm was cut off by one of the other 9 people but they're not sure who or how, but the other 9 people give independent but similar stories of how maybe a wolf broke in and ate the arm, and so they grabbed weapons and fended off the wolf and made it leave while the 1 person slept through it all. Unless you find evidence that contradicts that story, you can't really say that the 1 person's story is definitively what happened over the night and the other 9 people are just crazy, maybe they are but you need proof because you can assert the minorities claims as the entirety of the experience.
Sorry again for my rambling and any aggressive nature I took. I thank you for your time and hope you have a nice day.
[–]TRPACC1 point 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I was talking about the user thats accusing me of supporting the simulation because I pointed out men cannot dictate what women's experiences are.
[–]2095conash1 point 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
And during the process of it you made a false equivocation of saying that this simulator is just as valid of talking about all women's experiences as Warren Farrell repeating what he was told by individuals about their experience. Huge difference in scale.
Not only that but your point is a bit warped. In this thread you're CONSTANTLY saying men and women in regards to this experience stuff, and while yes no individual can tell another what their experience is, and yes this simulator is about female experiences, honestly by this point I'm beginning to think that you believe that a random stranger on the street by essence of having a penis can tell me that I've been raped and mugged daily without even so much as having me introduce myself first.
No individual can talk over another individuals experience, and while probably no men have experienced the universal female experiences through the process of being female (they can undergo the same experiences for different reasons perhaps, heck transgendered people also throw this for a bit of a loop since you can have a man then whom may have undergone the female experience due to biology and stuff), here we have a problem of who IS able to speak about what the UNIVERSAL female experience is.
It certainly isn't a handful of women whom believe that it's impossible to have a vagina and not be assaulted/raped. Once this has been established, your entire point because completely off topic. I can argue that someone who thinks that a woman's period is the most painful thing any woman would ever experience without saying that there's any one thing that all women will find the most painful experience in their life. We're not saying 'what' the female experience is, we just have enough currently solid evidence (since science and reason involves a shit ton of stuff before thought solid being proven wrong, like the idea that the world was flat) to be able to see that this simulator is about as accurate to the universal female experience as saying that every woman will undergo an incredibly painful labor within the first 30 years of their life. It doesn't require us to be women to be able to see how flawed the logic is, nor are we turning to any individual woman and saying she wasn't raped, merely that not EVERY women is raped (THIS BASED ON STUDIES WHERE WOMEN TALKED ABOUT THEIR OWN EXPERIENCES WHEREIN THEY SAID THEY WERE NOT RAPED/SEXUALLY ASSAULTED IN THEIR LIVES).
Are we able to talk about what the universal female experience is? Not until there is one that is universally accepted at least (then we can talk about it as the fact that it would then be). Our argument against this simulator is that these individuals clearly don't know it either. Meanwhile you've been rather ardently saying that our criticisms of this simulator are invalid in that we don't know what the universal experience is. I don't know what it feels like to walk on the moon without a helmet, but I can tell you based on science that someone who did that would die.
Meanwhile, unless I miss something, you continue to stand your ground that us criticizing this thing basically saying something as easily demonstrably wrong on a universal level as all women will have babies (some will, others won't) is invalid on the basis of penis.
I'm sorry but that just doesn't stand up to logic if you ask me. We're not arguing about woman X saying that she experiences sexual assault, we're arguing that woman X is saying that EVERY SINGLE woman experiences sexual assault and she's wrong.
But that's just me. Sorry again for my rambling nature and also how aggressive I probably came off in that. I thank you for your time and hope you have a good day.
No, I pointed out the person I responded to that accused me of supporting the simulation because I said men cannot dictate women's experience was using the similar logic's as the people that accused Warren Farrell of supporting incest because he pointed out that some people enjoyed it.
I don't support the simulation, nor do I support men or women dictating what other peoples experiences are - I can hold these two beliefs simultaneously.
Yes, but I would like to point out, that, at least before I joined into this you had made.... 5 posts saying that individuals can't say what another person's experience is. And while that point is valid you said it in a rather incorrect way given the context.
We're talking about a simulator that says that all women experience X.
You've said five times that men cannot dictate what a woman's experience is, offering no further explanation or anything. Socially what you've been saying comes off as, "By the virtue of having a penis, any criticisms of anything that is claimed to be a female experience, whether accurate or not, is wrong and can never be valid."
If you had gone further into detail and said that no one can define another person's experience, or that this simulator may accurately reflect someone's experience and we cannot deny that, or if you had merely stopped after saying it a few times realizing that we are in no way talking about a single individuals lived experience but rather the notion that ALL women go through this experience, as easily demonstrably false as saying that all women go through child birth, then your lack of support to the simulation would be clear.
I'm not saying that you support the simulation, I'm saying you did a very shitty job communicating your ideas in a manner that didn't come off as if what is between a person's legs defines the validity of their ideas (within this context).
Actually no, they accused you of supporting it because you repeating the same phrase, with no further explanation, analysis, or giving ground (if we assume there was at least one debate, of which I saw several, going on) which contained rather gender-charged language put you in a position of sounding like you were using 'men vs women' separation based logic (even though nothing you said made it sound like men and women are enemies of one another, you did make it sound like we're incapable of understanding what another human being thinks, feels, or believes), and you were asserting this in a context that at least sounded like a challenge to criticisms that are completely valid (because no one was talking about what X person experienced, merely that we can easily demonstrate that the beliefs held by these .00001% of people are not accurate when applied to even 51% of women). By challenging these criticisms without really allowing for a more in-depth dialogue (by not offering further explanation, giving any ground, or admitting any miscommunication or wrong doing) you came off as a starch defender of the simulator.
What you did basically came down to you accidentally saying, "MEN CANNOT CRITICIZE ANYTHING WOMEN SAY ABOUT WOMEN!" Even if a woman said that being a woman is so hard that they experience pain that is so horrible 24/7, simply because of being a woman and thus all women experience it, that a brutal murder would be a mercy. This was not what you were trying to say, but that's how you came off, and THAT is far closer to the critics of Warren Farrel in the example that you gave than people whom took a stance and argued against what they THOUGHT you were saying.
tl;dr- No, you just communicated so badly that you came off sexist. Might want to work some on your social skills, I don't mean this in an insulting way but you seem to generally not understand how badly you failed to communicate what you meant to say.
I again apologize for my rambling nature and if I came off aggressive or insulting at all. I also apologize that I was more emotionally charged (for the same communication reasons I described here that others took what you said as) that it took me three giant long-winded posts before I was able to calm down and inform you about how you were improperly communicating. I thank you for your time and hope you have a nice day.

Women don't have a common "experience." Women in different economic strata and cultures have vastly different experiences. Just like men don't have a common "expereince". There are some common experiences that are shared with some men and women,
And,
It is possible for someone who doesn't live through this experience to understand it.
Not everyone practices solipsism, as I fear you might. Some people can empathize and understand other people's experiences.
I agree that women do not have a common experience.
Men do not experience being women, so to speak for woman's experience of harassment, or fear of rape is solipsism itself.
[–]Psuedofem3 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
so to speak for woman's experience of harassment, or fear of rape is solipsism itself.
You don't know the definition of solipsism. Solipsism is (generally) the belief that one's own viewpoint is the only valid or real viewpoint (or that one's own mind is the only thing that is sure to exist)
Saying that "I can understand women's viewpoint" is literally the opposite. It's recognizing someone's viewpoint as valid, empathizing with them and attempting to connect with them.
You saying that "Nobody can understand what happens to the other gender" is solipsism.
P.S., The experiences of women are constantly empathized with, while the experiences of men are invisible. Care to comment or explain?
[–]Dronelisk3 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Ok fair general point. What does this have absolutely anything to do with the discussion at hand, the link provided or anything at all?
From what I've seen, I think that you're right.... But that your point is irrelevant.
Yes, we cannot dictate what another person's experience is, this is NOT limited to men with women or vice versa, but I cannot dictate what my brother has gone through, and he can't for me. In fact your own argument actually FURTHER argues that this game is wrong, because (from my understanding) it's basically saying that there are NO women who don't experience sexual harassment, and maybe they all do, but if I find even ONE who says that she hasn't experienced it (and I'm sure that I've got SEVERAL friends who'd say that, I'm making this GUESS based on my assessment of their personality and more personal conversations I've had with them, so while obviously I don't know and can't say for sure, I definitely have a better idea as to if they have or haven't than some random stranger on the street).
Your argument is ultimately irrelevant because we're looking at a bit of an issue of scale, no one but me can tell me what my experiences ultimately are like and how they affect me, no one knows them in their entirety better than me, but I'm an individual, and on an individual level your argument is 100% accurate. But unless I'm misunderstanding how this 'simulator' works, it's not about an INDIVIDUAL woman's experience, but the collective.
If you would, it'd be like if there was a simulator out there for "/r/MensRights visitor simulator", something that would apply to you I imagine, but me at least for sure. Such a simulator obviously wouldn't be about you specifically or me, so obviously it is not necessarily depicting a specific existing experience, so it could include traveling to Mars, and using a giant laser gun to sink Australia or something, obviously your argument of not being able to deny experiences to suggest that the creator of this game (or someone whom they based the game on) went to Mars and sunk Australia, and it most CERTAINLY is not something we do often here at this sub (unless I seem to conveniently keep missing the rocket ship gathering threads). An individual experience cannot be denied, but what a person 'believes' to be the experience of a group as a whole, whether they are apart of that group or not, are a MUCH different thing which CAN be denied.
And to the idea that these ideas can't be refuted by one outside of such group even when far more possible or realistic (since I highly doubt THIS simulator deals with travel to Mars), let's go back to my hypothetical and all. Let us say that In this MRA simulator (or whatever you'd short-hand it as), they made it so that it no matter what you did you never encountered a girl that could stand being with you after hearing what you believe, something that actually is a bit of a common belief (at least in regards to girlfriends). While I'm sure many of the males here have friends or family whom haven't denounced them entirely for wanting equality for men (information beyond that which they share obviously can vary by a lot of stuff), I at least can attest to having a girlfriend whom knows my beliefs, my more MRA leanings, and various things like that without really being interested in visiting this sub (not hugely interested/invested in gender inequalities, but I'm not hugely invested/interested in racial inequalities, or sexual inequalities, and many other sorts of things, so that's just rather human of her). I'm pretty sure that she or my friends/family would stand up and defend that such a portrayal is inaccurate of at least me, even though they aren't the group being targeted. They still know me well enough to know that I'm not universally hated by all women once they know that I want equality for men and all (heck even when they know about my distaste for feminism). They don't need to BE me in order to be able to make that assessment, they know me and have seen me interact with women (assuming they aren't one) and that it went just fine and all.
It would be easy to refute that this 'possibly real' simulator is just flat out wrong, and it's not denying experiences. Are there people out there who fit that experience? Sure! But this isn't Joe Shmoe who had that experience, this is the experience of you, me, Joe, Fred, George, and EVERYONE else who visits here, even if we give it the leeway of being about the 'majority' rather than 'every' case (which then is rather devious since psychologically, the simulator would be implying that it's a 100% thing, and then to turn around and say that you're just talking about 51%, that's rather devious if you ask me, deceit for the sake of propaganda, but hey, maybe it was just an accident), the fact that such an experience CAN exist (and even when such experiences PROBABLY exist) does not mean that it's at all FAIR to say that it's the experience that the 'entire' group has (or at least that it's common within the group).
So while your point is right, you're applying it on an improper scale, your point is accurate on the individual level, but we're talking about something that's on a 'group' level, where your point no longer is accurate (no one individual makes up the entire group, unless every person of the group gets together and they make a consensus about what their experience is, but last I knew, my sisters, mom, girlfriend, friends, and all them didn't get together for a secret meeting to talk about these things without any men figuring out, then you are speaking for yourself not the group).... Well guaranteed to be accurate, there certainly are cases where it'd apply, but this most certainly is not one of them.
I apologize for how much I ramble and if I came off as aggressive at all. I thank you for your time and hope you have a nice day.

Okay.
As a woman...
It's fear mongering garbage. Every choice ends with being sexually harassed. This is not a reflection of the real world.
[–]organicvegetable13 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
As a woman, I find this completely insulting. I don't whose life they're simulating, but stuff like that rarely happens.
[–]ddrluna12 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Agreed. It's ridiculous.
Hell, one time I can legitimately say I was "harassed". I was walking home from the convenience store one night and was followed by a guy in his car through the neighborhood (he actively tried to pull over a few times motioning for me to come to him) until I finally ducked down a side road and hauled ass home. I don't know what might have happened. It was the one time I was legitimately freaked out because strangers just looking for directions or something innocent aren't that persistent with someone clearly trying to get away from them.
That said? Comparing that experience to some dude passively asking for my phone number or giving me a compliment in passing and calling those things harassment (Let alone sexual harassment) is incredibly insulting.
I want to punch people who get all uppity about (largely innocent) male attention. Like, please fuck off. I don't consider my experience "rape" or anything fucking retarded like that. There are people out there who have actually been raped. It not only belittles the experience of those people but it cheapens the word and demonizes any man who "dares" to flirt or give any woman any attention. It pisses me off to no end.
[–]organicvegetable6 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
That's awful! I'm glad you got home safe.
I completely agree with what you've said, and matches with what I was thinking while on that site.
[–]bunker_man4 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
The people who make this also flip out when people point out it's garbage, and act like that means no one cares about molestation. And no matter how many times its explained to them slowly, they fail to grasp that its not calling attention to these things that people dislike. It's HOW they choose to do it. Especially since people who want to raise realistic awareness have to fight against the people who make caring something only crazy extremists do, and try to make it universalist.
I agree with you, but the issue needs to be addressed in gender neutral terms b/c sexual harassment can happen to anyone. Men shouldn't have to fear what happens if they ask a woman for her phone number!
[–]SabineLavine0 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Shit like that happens to me almost every day. This "simulator" names it out to be a lot more sinister then it actually is, but this stuff absolutely happens.

I'd say the amount of women who go through life with no sexual harassment vastly outnumber the ones who have faced it. Let alone literally every option available leading to said outcome.
[–]FredtheFailLord2 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Well, the qualifier there should be "in a first world country." If you're a woman in the middle east, for example, chances of sexual harassment are much higher.

[–]Catacronik1 point 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Cool. A small subreddit, a subreddit that specifically draws in certain types of people comes to the conclusion that ALL women have experienced this. They can agree with each other all they damned want, they are a farcry from representing all women everywhere.
I, as a guy, have experienced the whole "humouring someone you're afraid of" as well. It's not like it's exclusive to women. I live in a smaller, more destitute town and we have our fair share of weird/methedout people. I've been approached by weird people late at night and figured my best option is to play it safe and humour them if they talk to me, rather than ignore them. And yet, I have women in my life that have faced very little to none of that.
There are always going to be shitty people that other people have to deal with. Whether it be facilitated through sexism, racism or just plain dickishness. People like to find reasons to hate other people.

A guy can't really make that statement, its like a woman saying how men experience something
You could make that argument if we actually were talking about lived experiences.
We're talking about things that can be directly observed, not the individual experience of said things. This isn't saying "this harassment isn't that bad" (quantitative), it's "harassment doesn't happen that often" (qualitative).

You don't get it. Historical oppression is only a factor if it's female historical oppression.
Male historical oppression was just a minor inconvenience for a few unlucky individuals, it wasn't hegemonic systemic oppression, experienced by every woman everywhere in either equal or greater than equal amounts.
[–]staunchly-19 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Not trolling, pointing out white feather campaign is a localised reference. And yeah, it's not like and children suffer in war, everyone leaves them alone!
Oh, and on the subject of sexual harassment, unlike your opinions I have some facts:
[In the United States, 83 per cent of girls aged 12 to 16 have experienced some form of sexual harassment in public schools [9].] (http://www.unwomen.org/en/what-we-do/ending-violence-against-women/facts-and-figures)
Sexual harassment is a serious issue in the US, right now, but clearly your hypothetical is more pressing- after all, call for a draft is totally imminent!
[–]Okymyo13 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
We should make a "draft" for women: if the number of newborns isn't high enough, women are to be gathered and fertilized against their own will (just as men are gathered to war against their own will).
Why are you complaining about it? It's not like it's imminent.
And why would an important issue, such as sexual harassment, mean that nothing else can be discussed or even brought up? You sound like the typical feminist, if an issue that regards men is brought up "STOP WORRYING ABOUT MEN, WOMEN ARE THE OPPRESSED ONES!". I feel pretty oppressed if I can't even talk about issues regarding the male gender without being insulted or my concerns belittled.
[–]staunchly-14 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Dude, that may (not really lol) be valid if this thread were about the draft but it is about the sexual harassment women experience. You and that other dude are off topic, not me. I am pointing out that street harassment happens to women every day, while this white feather bullshit happened once, during WWI. One of these issues is pressing and current, one is over 100 years old.
I don't think women are the only oppressed ones, men can certainly experience oppression, just not to the degree and extent women do. Certainly not white, straight men, the majority of your movement.
[–]Okymyo7 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I'm criticizing your last line:
And I was defending that just because sexual harassment is an issue, that doesn't mean drafts should be belittled in any way, which is exactly what you did. You belittled the concerns of hundreds of millions of people worldwide because of sexual harassment.
I'm not saying sexual harassment isn't important, because it certainly is, but dismissing other peoples' concerns isn't the way to go.
And if you consider it bluntly, and only logically: being forced to fight in a war and possibly die (or be traumatized) is far worse than being called "hot" or "fuckable" whenever you go out on the street or, even worse, be groped. I would prefer that every day some random girl would grope me than being sent to war and see my friends dying (and hope every day that I won't be one of those who die) because of something I never had anything to do with, and that was beyond my control.
One is a direct concern towards safety and integrity of life itself; the other concerns self-esteem above all.
And most important of all: one is a behavioral issue, which needs a change of mentality, the other is something that can be changed "easily".
You can't snap your fingers or pass a law that ends sexual harassment, but you can pass a law that ends drafts. We should tackle issues that are in our reach before attempting to tackle those that are still a long way to go, especially if it's a long process which will always be long, regardless of the effort put into it.
[–]ILoveHate11 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
So I looked up that study over here. The numbers are pretty close these days, 52% of boys and 50% of girls admit to doing it. Sexual harassment includes brushing up against someone. Additionally, more girls than boys admit to harassing someone if they wanted to have power over them or wanted something from them (isn't this the definition of rape?).
Finally, on page 20 you will see that wile 83% of girls experience harassment, 79% of boys do as well. So don't act like it's the end of the world. Now, wanna give me the numbers of women who were drafted into war compared to men?
Yes, the study says that intentionally brushing up against someone in a sexual way is sexual harassment. Do you disagree with that?
[–]staunchly-16 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
When was the last draft? Oh, and war is a shitty experience for women as well, with rape frequently used as a weapon. Let's just focus on the menz, though.
[–]zombiehunter6967 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Well, someone has to since feminists seem to forget.
[–]staunchly-13 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Women did not create the draft, or the rules that bar women from being eligible for it, so expecting feminism to make this their top concern is disingenuous.Feminists do advocate on issues affecting men and work against things that are harmful to men. This is all rather moot as "the most recent attempt to get the military draft reinstated in the US, the Universal National Service Act, provides that “young men and women ages 18-26 could be called to service” . So, in fact, if the US ever reinstates a military draft it will reflect the current attitudes towards women’s ability to participate in the military.".
[–]Psuedofem8 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Women did not create the draft, or the rules that bar women from being eligible for it,
Neither did men. Excuse me, -most- men.
Saying that "Women didn't create the draft so lol fuck you guys, patriarchy is backfiring" Is victim blaming to a key. It's also you being a calloused stupid cunt.
A select few privileged men created the law that enacts sexist standards for enforced military service. This sexism benefits women and harms men. The grand majority of all men have been harmed by sexist attitudes created and maintained by men.
And the white feather campaign is a prime example of women enforcing male gender roles. If you deny that women aren't complicit in the patriarchy you'd be... ignorant beyond all reason.
well, haha, I guess you are! oh dear~ go back to your echo cambers in the fempire.
[–]StarsDie8 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
"so expecting feminism to make this their top concern is disingenuous."
If they want to fancy themselves as a movement for gender equality, they better damn well have something that is so blatantly and dangerously sexist as a top priority. The fact that it isn't shows that their priorities are gynocentric.
Also if you read farther on to that wikipedia reference, it says that "The bill, however, was dismissed at the end of the 111th Congress session."
So no, we still have a male only draft. looks like you're... ignorant beyond all reason yet again!
Go back to your echo chamber, your opinions are stupid.
[–]staunchly-4 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I did read that far; it is not feminists' fault the majority of republicans voted it down.
You're right, it's not the feminist fault we live in a society that is sexist against men.
But it is feminists fault that they have ignored male issues and capitalized on internalized fear of men and the disposibility of men.

It is unwanted attention that you explicitly make clear is unwanted that is harassment.
[–]BabeOfBlasphemy3 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Perhaps some women may feel that way, but most rational women only consider it harassment if the guy doesn't take a polite no for an answer (which is VERY common), does it in an intimidating way (invading personal space, making heavy sexual innuendo, etc) which is also unfortunately quite common, gets angry at the rejection (also quite common). Its the consistency of how often the above happens which makes it feel like sexual harrasment. If you were small bodied and had large men do this to you everyday for years, rest assured, you would complain too.

Girls never play hard to get?
[–]BabeOfBlasphemy-2 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Its pretty rare. I knew a few attention loving girls in high school who played that game, but they were NO where near the norm and as an adult the only ones who tend to do that are gold diggers (that's what attention loving girls tend to grow up to be). Normal healthy adult women don't play games like that, its actually scary when a guy won't take no.
[–][deleted]6 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Pretty rare? Girls in their 20's still play these games. They like the thrill of the chase. They don't want a guy who's just going give up so easily.
[–]ricky2512943 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
As much as I get where you're going with that, I'm pretty sure they don't want it from some guy on the street on their way to work or if they're already in a relationship. These sorts of games are for more sociable environments like clubs, bars, parties and dinners with people they can get to know longer than 5 minutes.
[–][deleted]3 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
True. I wouldn't do this at the grocery store or the gas station. If I ask a girl, who doesn't look busy or in a hurry, for her number and she declines, I might throw out a one liner like, "you don't know what you're missing" or "there's going to be plenty of alcohol there!" and there's maybe a 1/10 chance she would take up the offer on the second try. At the bar or club, it's a different playing field.

[–]skinnybignose2 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
It's really difficult to quantify a percentage of women that play hard to get, but the fact that it happens at all will put the thought into a man's mind that maybe this girl is, thus justifying some level of persistence.
[–]BabeOfBlasphemy1 point 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Clarifying is okay, I can get that. Its when people attempt after clarification that you wonder if you are dealing with someone who has no respect for boundaries and THAT is scary. I think everyone needs to understand (women included) that if you are told a polite "thanks but no thanks" to push beyond that is to cross into impolite territory and the more you cross the more you could very well repell the person.

When you're at the bar or club, without your husband, wearing your wedding ring, and you say you're married, that's playing hard to get.
In my younger days, a wedding ring was a simple obstacle.

Context clues. Married women don't go to clubs or bars while their husbands are away just to "hang out".
[–]switch100 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I'm a married woman, and I DO go to bars/clubs/strip clubs with my girlfriends all the time to just hang out. My husband is completely fine with it. Just because I am going out without him does not mean that I am playing hard to get. Perhaps you have controlling characteristics where you would prevent a person you are in a relationship with from hanging out with their friends at a club, but we do not.
No, I've just hooked up with married women who were out, just hanging out. I've hooked up with a married woman who was DDing for her friends. She ditched them at the club and took me home.
No one hits on female patrons at the strip club unless they work there, it's guy code or something.

[–]LadyLuq-1 point 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Wait, hold on, women shouldn't be allowed to go to bars or clubs without their husbands or else they're playing hard to get?
If you're a married female, and you hit up the bars and clubs without your husband, you're going to get hit on. It's expected, and it's not sexual harassment. Ten years ago, I'd see a married woman at the bar, and I'd see a challenge. If a girl said, "sorry, I'm married" that just meant I needed to try better. I'm a low pressure salesman.
[–]LadyLuq1 point 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
So are men who go to the bars without their wives also playing hard to get?
Guys will tell you they get hit on more after they get married. This is true. I don't know why. I had a buddy that would wear his wedding ring out after he had gotten divorced for this very reason.
Or how about the fact that people go out to bars for reasons other than getting hit on?
You're missing the entire point. The point is that being hit on isn't automatically sexual harassment, that women who get hit on aren't delicate flowers who will wilt as soon as a man gets within 10 feet of them, and that men who hit on women aren't automatically some sort of pervert degenerate that should be shamed into never daring to speak to a woman again.
You're still doing nothing but coming up with reasons why guys are automatically bad and projecting malicious motives on them, and making the assumption that male pursuit of sex is automatically predatory and threatening.
...Literally what are you talking about? Where did I mention harassment in my posts? Where did I say that men hitting on women is predatory and threatening? Did you actually read my posts or do you just want to make things up to make yourself upset?
[–][deleted]0 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Or how about the understanding that if you go out to a bar, married or single, you're going to get hit on, and getting hit on does not amount to sexual harassment. If a guy buys you a drink, is he sexually harassing you? If a guy tries to hit on you, you tell him you're married, and he buys you a drink anyways, is he sexually harassing you? If he says you should come to his place and check out his new Tempurpedic mattress because it's the most comfortable bed you'll ever lay in, is he sexually harassing you?
Uh, I never said that was sexual harassment? Why are you putting words in my mouth?
This thread was about the "female simulator" where every time a woman steps three feet out of her house she gets sexually harassed.
And the post I responded to was saying that women who go to a bar without their husbands are playing hard to get. No where did I even mention harassment.

[–]SabineLavine2 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I get the distinct impression that the men on here don't believe that unwanted attention like this could actually be a problem for women, and/or they think we're exaggerating. Maybe it is the type of thing that's hard to believe if you haven't experienced it firsthand.
I don't know, but if I had to estimate, I'd say it has happened to me no fewer than three times a week, for the last 20 years It's not the worst thing in the world, and I don't hate all men because of it, but it gets old. It factors into just about everything I do, or don't do.
[–]skinnybignose3 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Perhaps some women may feel that way, but most rational women only consider it harassment if the guy doesn't take a polite no for an answer (which is VERY common),
I think you're most likely right here, but the one thing that makes this difficult to judge is the amount of women out there that like to play hard to get.
does it in an intimidating way (invading personal space, making heavy sexual innuendo, etc) which is also unfortunately quite common
Yeah, unfortunately this does happen, but I would like to think that it's a minority of men out there that are like that.
gets angry at the rejection (also quite common).
I've been hit on by women in clubs on quite a lot of occasions (some have been quite sexually explicit in their approach) most, I've rejected, and some have got very angry, so I know how that feels. It's wrong and shouldn't happen, if you're going to hit on people you should expect rejection and deal with it (man or women), it comes with the territory.
If you were small bodied and had large men do this to you everyday for years, rest assured, you would complain too.
Absolutely, this is something I've said for years. You see, men get sexually harassed too (believe me I know, I've had my arse/cock grabbed in clubs by women many times) the main reason men deal with it differently is because women pose less of a physical threat to men as men do to women.
Anyway, I don't think many people would disagree with you so have my upvote.
EDIT: spelling
You have my upvote as well!
I'm sorry, but one of these things is not like the other.
Refusing to take no for an answer. Deliberately intimidating. Getting angry.
One of those things is not a valid excuse to feel threatened. Women need to get over the notion that they have a god-given right to go through life without ever having to experience male anger.
I don't know how you could possibly extoll such a response to what I said.
[–]bunker_man1 point 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

exactly it's bad
It's totally not sexist to imply that anyone female can't handle going on living when even the slightest thing happens to them, but also anything that happens to anyone male they have some kind of infinite well of strength to draw from that means if they complain they're a whiny bitch pucci.

It's hilarious, really.
First off, they're really, really bad. When they made their team they were in Platinum 4 or something (Season 3). So, they were as far high up the ranks as a group of people who were "good" so they decided to make a ranked team for fun. Platinum is the top 10% if I'm not mistaken: that comprises approximately 5 million people/accounts.
They were dismissed for being awful, and fought it back as being dismissed for being women. Their Platinum 4 team should've gotten a lot of attention! Curse misogynistic society for not giving this group of females the attention they needed!
They made an introduction video (you should find it on youtube, it's hilarious) which is basically them saying "I'M *insert name here*, I'M THE *insert role here* AND I'LL WRECK YOU", while showing some tits, like that'll save them.
Everyone laughed at them. They disappeared.

This should be called, living in a neighborhood full of jerks simulator.

In the name of the women's sexual liberation: Where is the part where I take the "harasser" to my house and we fuck like possessed???
Sorry but I can't approve the script. It has many reasoning errors.
[–]occupythekitchen14 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
You walk back from the supermarket with a bag in each hand. A man tries to grab your arse because you haven't got a free hand to stop him.
This is the best game ever no matter what I chose I lose.
Track suit and supermarket.
This game sucks. If you are walking back, you are already walking back!!

This plays out like a hentai game without the pay off at the end. Tits or GTFO

If I didn't know better I'd think this was satire.

Hysteria and paranoia simulator, more like.
[–]aussietoads8 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Female experience simulator - for those with no simulated female experience.
Women do experience this kind of shit. We don't all find it traumatizing, but it does happen.
It's not all sexual harassment though.
I've only seen it happen once or twice in over 20 years.
[–]sicsemperTrex1 point 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Probably because you don't spend a lot of time around women, Veyron.
[–]SabineLavine1 point 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I have it happen to me almost every day. Again, I'm not saying it's traumatic, but it does get old.
I'm not sure if I'm naive or just hyper sensitive about ever even speaking to women unless prodded.
I walked to the bodega down the block to grab beers. On my block, everyone says some sort of greeting, regardless of knowing each other. I walked by a woman today who averted eye contact, ducks right and head down. I think:
is she scared that I'm going to rape her?!?.
Crazy, but ...

Sexual Harassment = The dude hitting on me is ugly
As soon as an advance isn't convenient or up to their standards, or they have a SO - it's now "Sexual Harassment".

I love how the one saying not to get fat was sexual harassment. It might be harassment, but how was it sexual?
[–]shitonmyass4 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
That's one unlucky female.
A guy in a smart suit sits next to you on the bus. Using his copy of the Metro for cover, he puts a hand on your thigh and starts to slide it up towards your crotch.
Uh... I'm pretty sure that this wouldn't happen every single day.
Agreed but it's normally from the ACTUALLY creepy dudes that it happens on tubes. My teacher told me the time where this guy was standing behind her masturbating on the tube when she was back in school(about 7-8 years ago). It's a rare occurrence but it makes me think wtf is going on in these guys heads?
facepalm "A bunch of hipster students are sitting next to the door of the coffee shop discussing the attractiveness of the women coming and going just loudly enough for them to hear. Their opinions of your fuckability vary.
Uh-oh, you've attracted unwanted attention, otherwise known as sexual harassment. It's time to pick up the tattered remains of your self-confidence and go home. "
Yeah, be angry you attract people ! And be angry to if they don't think so
[–]Doctor_Loggins3 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I dunno, that one's just kind of rude in general. I'm not gonna act like I don't gossip about people in public, but I at least have the common courtesy to wait until they're out of earshot.
rude, but not sexual harrasment

I feel most women would find this "simulator" to be incredibly insulting and condescending. The woman described here has an unhealthy lack of self-esteem and needs therapy. Are we now to assume all women are this way, who are in no way adept of handling any situation that comes their way? I get that it's trying to make a point, but it's so far in the realm of ridiculousness it's laughable.
Assertive individuals with even moderate levels of self-esteem will re-establish their boundaries when confronted with situations like this. Remaining passive and crying to your cat about it is about the worst thing you can do. If you do nothing, then nothing changes.
Someone should add the self-esteem expansion to this game. It might go something like this...
On your way to the supermarket a van pulls up next to you. The driver says that he's seen you around and thinks you're very attractive, so can he have your number? You say "No, I'm not interested" and keep walking, but he crawls along next to you. You turn to him again and tell him to leave you alone. Undaunted, he continues, so you whip out your cell phone and call 911, saying a strange man is following you in his car and note his license plate number.
Surprise! You just handled unwanted creepy attention. Hey, where'd he go? The police investigate the plate number and find it matches the description of a van that has been seen harassing people in the area. The perpetrator is quickly apprehended.
You decide to cycle to the gym. You're stopped at the traffic lights on a busy junction when a car pulls up next to you. The driver opens the window and says "you can ride me any time, love".
You smirk, retorting "Has that line EVER actually worked for you? Because this is not one of those times." He calls you a bitch and you laugh at his attempt to hurt your feelings.
Surprise! You just stood up for yourself and keep moving once the light turns green.
On your way to the coffee shop a man starts following you and asking why you keep walking away from him. Annoyed at the unwanted attention, you call back "Because I'm not interested and I have places to be."
Woah. You just established your boundaries! You proceed with the rest of your day, not giving the incident a second thought.
A guy in a smart suit sits next to you on the bus. Using his copy of the Metro for cover, he puts a hand on your thigh and starts to slide it up towards your crotch. As you turn to lock eyes, you stop his hand and whisper "You have 3 seconds to remove your hand from my thigh, before I do it for you" never breaking eye contact.
Scary! Taken aback by your firm tone and assertiveness, he withdraws his hand nervously and apologizes before hurriedly getting off the bus at the next stop.
Women are not the weak, helpless creatures you make them out to be. Stop it already.
Edit: Cleanup.

Designed by a fat, mentally ill woman who these things never happen to, and imagines it happening often to the pretty, slim girls she hates.
That said, it is rude to be interrupting people sexually that are just going about their daily business.

SporkTornado:
TRPACCs response:
now TRPACC is saying:
anyone noticing a weird schizo inconsistency in TRPACCs comments? concern troll and 'the voice of reason' in one comment, and then assumptions and baiting for insults and 'misogyny' in another, then following the insults up with more 'voice of reason' nonsense?
[–]TRPACC-9 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
and
Designed by a fat, mentally ill woman who these things never happen to, and imagines it happening often to the pretty, slim girls she hates. - which was supposed to be humourous.
Don't contradict each other.
Both describe people imagining they know what other people experiences are, both critique that logical mistake.
[–]SoldierofNod7 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I have to be frank and say that name-calling isn't going to get us anywhere. There's plenty of things we can attack without resorting to personal insults.
Point taken. It was a reference to a meme apparently made by a feminist woman. Can't find it now - it went something like
"I need fourth wave feminism because Im tired of fat, mentally ill feminists hating me for being pretty".
