The most infuriating part of all this is that there's already a word that exists to describe exactly what they're complaining about:

Patronize: to treat condescendingly.

Patronize comes from Latin patronus "protector, master," related to pater "father." So if you patronize a person, you talk down to them like a father might do to his child or a master to his apprentice.

Apparently this wasn't blatant enough to describe condescending men, someone had to make an entirely new word that was more obviously sexist to get their point across.

If you were to change the genders around, you'd basically have a flowchart for something the women do all the time(if not explicitly because of gender). It's also kind of funny that these people would assume that because a woman is "an expert in her field" or "has more experience" that she couldn't be wrong about something or need something explained, or re-explained, to them. Apparently women are omniscient, cannot be wrong and cannot forget anything.

What's worse about all of this though, is that it fully demonstrates a form of bigotry in that women take great insult being corrected or informed by men, specifically because they are men. Not just in assuming that men are too incompetent to assess any situation in which they offer an explanation(or being capable of identifying when that explanation was necessary or beneficial to others) or in assuming that an explanation from a man would be given condescendingly because he is a man, but in taking genuine offence to an explanation, or even the desire to inform others, because it came from a man when a woman giving that exact same explanation to another woman would be perfectly fine.

The hypocrisy to me is when feminists tell men that we don't need a men's movement, because feminism addresses men's issues to (which we have many examples of that not being true.)

Shouldnt the people with actual lived experiences of what their issues are and how they should be addressed? IMO it really shouldn't be up to a women's movement to define toxic masculinity- it would be unfair for me to tell women about what it's like being a woman. The same should go both ways.

Obviously it's wrong for a man to assume a woman doesn't know something and talk over her, so I do think mansplaining happens sometimes, there are men with sexist views. But the way it's often presented goes too far. And I don't like the idea of drilling these gender ideas into high school kids.

What amazes me is that feminist scholarship is considered a valid school of thought, regrading maleness and masculinity. Almost none of those 'scholars' are men, with many also being lesbians (which there is nothing wrong with, but also further skews their proximity to, and opinions of half the population.) Gentlemen. I actually caught myself "mansplaining" the other day. Here is the deal. We men are problem solvers. When a problem arises, what do we do? We hold it up, poke it, take it apart, analyze it, and decide on how best to "fix" it. If you go to your buddy and say "hey man my boss is really riding me at work", your buddy will naturally ask questions to ascertain what is going on, and then offer solutions to the problem. You guys will hash it out, and attempt to "fix" it.

Women however, do not operate this way. When they encounter problems they seem to get emotionally overwhelmed and frustrated, and they seek out a friendly ear to "vent". At this point, they are not seeking a solution, they just need to talk and release the emotions and frustration.

And what do we do? Instead of allowing women to vent, we go into "fix it" mode, cut them off, and tell them how to fix the problem. We can't help it. Listen to yourself next time a woman brings a problem to you. You will be surprised how quickly you do this.

When women complain about "mansplaining" I believe this is what that they are referring to. To them we are not listening. We are just giving explanations that they didn't ask for. I have never seen a man just randomly try to explain things to a woman, but I have seen us try to fix their problems instead of letting them vent. This must be what they are complaining about

Now while I personally think it is childish to attack men for this, when women could easily just say "hey I need to vent can you listen please?", I do take personal responsibilty for how I treat others. So knowing this, I have lately started asking women "would you like my opinion on this, or do you just need to vent?". And voila. It works like magic.

Mansplaining is a counterproductive word. It's also fair to say that before you attempt to educate anyone on a topic it's fair to ask them a question that shows you're not taking for granted they dont know about it already. Something like "are you familiar with this already? Oh you are? Ok cool!" And then move on. That's a human thing. It's a kind and effective way to be. Also, the concept didn't come from nowhere. We dudes do have a tendency to assume chicks dont know about certain shit. To be fair, they often dont. Additionally, the topics we assume this about are probably areas saturated almost exclusively with men. And it's like that across the world and works for both genders in different areas. Just like when women try to tell us how to change a diaper or how to test a bottle when we heat it up. Because of this, anyone getting effectively ass hurt about this common phenomenon is ridiculous. Everyone should be able to see where everyone is coming from and why, apply some respectful techniques, and move the fuck on.
