"Man-word" is just a word invented by white people so they can say "manig..." and get away with it.

[–]Chuck_Morris_SE 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

You know when you sit down for a bit and our balls try to hibernate against our inner thigh?, it's relieving that, by spreading our legs slightly so we are comfortable.

It's apparently a really bad thing.. I don't get why either.

I don't get this shit either. I manspread too, sometimes it's fucking hot and I want to feel the breeze between my knees! Granted, if I'm legit taking space up for an old lady I'll move but, holy cow, the things people get worked up about just baffles me.

[–]Doctor_Loggins 13 points14 points15 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"Manspreading" is taking up more than one seat in a public space such as a bus or theater. Generally this is caused by the man spreading his legs, as though he has some kind of biological reason for doing so. It cannot be remedied by asking the man to close his legs or scoot over because reasons, and is different from a woman placing her purse on the seat beside her because also reasons.

This is the first I've ever heard of this term. And it's been added by an MRA group. I'll be impressed once we see it used by politicians, like mansplaining.

[–]the-capitan 203 points204 points205 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

if you look at the page, it seems some feminazis added it, an MRA group counter-added a new definition, and the MRA definition got upvoted really hard and fast. tumblrinas are busy downvoting it hard though so it rocketed up in total vote count, which is probably what UD uses as a trending measurement.

I'm sure she had lost it much earlier than that, that's why she had been seeking something else to blame it on other than her being incapable of utilizing knowledge and intelligence to spark a good debate, the best she could come up with was mansplaining, but it didn't work. I bet her parents didn't teach her not to pour gasoline on a fire.

[–]Greg_W_Allan 12 points13 points14 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

He'd gone through several explanations of the same thing for HER benefit. Everybody else in the committee grasped it the first time and were bored with the repetition.

This is a parliamentary committee in our federal government. She was not elected to play juvenile feminist games. Her constituents have every right to expect better than twitterese.

[–]mewfahsah 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah that seems like a scenario in which everyone would know all the general details and wouldn't need to ask a question that results in a condescending answer.

[–]DI0GENES_LAMP 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm sure some fuckheads somewhere actually do a shitty thing called mansplaining where they just roll over a woman with their big voices and overload of testosterone, but every single time I've seen it used in the wild, it's by some stupid, overly sensitive woman who wants to dominate a conversation.

i'm a lefty but i fucking can't stand SJWs. they are the bane of my adult life. i wish they would all go on an island somewhere and have wonderful genderless conversations.

[–]NascentBehavior 9 years ago* [recovered] (9 children) | Copy Link

The thing that irks me the most about that interaction is that her sarcastic tone of "I love the mansplaining, I'm enjoying it..." is so similar to the tone she seems upset about being used with her. It derails any point she was trying to make by wedging a gender issue in there. It would have been much less distracting from whatever point she was attempting to make by just politely asking he not be patronizing or another more neutral word. These days gender seems a minefield and any time someone says any of these special demonizing words, you're bound to get people's backs up because it's like a lesser form of calling someone a racist or a pedophile.

But fair enough to her, I bet this wasn't the first time this guy talked down to her like this and she was snapping based on previous encounters. The big problem for her is that using terms like that doesn't work well on 1v1 interactions because the other side has to buy into the same jargon and accept it's application before actual communication can happen.

[–]AVAtistar 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's a common tactic when your point is weak or you don't have one at all.

[–]Brian175 -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

I think mansplaining might be a real thing. But like a lot of sjw terms the definitions get expanded and overused. If mansplaining is simply a patronizing tone, I've been mansplained a lot as a man.

[–]NascentBehavior26 points 9 years ago* [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link

Yeah exactly, she used it as if everyone in the room would back her up, maybe clap in support. It's a bit haughty, and he goes completely defensive because as soon as she insinuates that he is speaking down to her because she's a woman (implying he's practicing a low-grade sexism) instead of any other reason... she casts herself as a martyr where the initial conversation disappears and they're left bantering about what the term means rather than what her point was supposed to be in the first place.

I've had a close friend of mine throw gender into an argument we were having once and it just ground the entire party to a halt. A bunch of friends were having some drinks and there was a dumb argument that started into more and more heated conversation until it everyone was saying "why are we fighting? what are we even arguing about?" I said, and I quote: "Yikes, wow, okay, we're all getting a little wound up here, let's just cool down out emotions" I tried figure out some of the misunderstandings a few of us had, some nods go around the room and then she says "- so I can't get upset BECAUSE I'M A WOMAN?!" After that, I knew we were never going to settle this because she refused to listen to my "fucking mansplaining" about calming down... meanwhile we were all getting emotional and upset, which was why I had said it about us all in the first place.

Too late. Trap sprung. I had to leave because she continued to just fume about it. I had to leave because she gave me the fucking silent treatment. She was being too upset to talk to her friend because I had said to the entire room "we're all getting too upset, let's back off". Didn't matter, took it personally like a gender issue. Took her a week to get over it and then afterwards she said "i don't even know why we were fighting! :)"

FUCK!

[–]Jack41096 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'd have just said that if i cant explain my side, then yes, you aren't allowed to get mad

[–]Soresmi 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

You weren't telling anyone they had to feel this way or they couldn't feel that way, were you? Look I don't care if she is a woman or a giant bronze cast of a rhino phallus, as a person with intense feelings I am offended she used supposed denial of her emotional state to silence your opinions. Just fucking deal with your nasty ass feelings, HUMAN :) If someone said that to me, man or woman they would quickly find out how vehement and illogical I truly can be.

Edit: I guess to further explain my offense, I know people elicit an extreme emotional reaction in me all the time. However I don't feel it is appropriate at all to say, look you are eliciting passion in me, your logic is invalid compared the omniscient knowledge of my emotions. From this perspective, I would argue to her that I believe she has every right and really should feel however she wants, but I gots the feels too and I'm not using mine as more than to shed some nuance or insight to what already may be pretty illogical.

[–]Settlers6 19 points20 points21 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think mansplaining might be a real thing.

Explaining done by a man is a real thing. But why make it gendered? Women explain things to men all the time, at times also using a patronizing tone. Anecdotally, I've experience more women explaining something in a patronizing way than I have men.

Even if there would be statistics that show men do it more often in a patronizing way (which there aren't), it's still hard to argue for making it gendered.

To put it in an analogy: we know that black people in the USA commit more burglary than white people (in relative terms). Should we call it "blackburgling"? I don't think so: I think it implies that comitting burglary is somewhat characteristic of black people, which isn't the case since it's only a minority of black people doing it. It would probably also help drive the wedge even further between black and white people. And what would have been gained? A fancy new word to insult black people with? Why can't it just be "burglary (done by a black person)"? The same goes here.

[–]Soresmi 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Indeed. By taking the patronizing tone of a man as being a purely male tactic, she is denying what is incredibly obvious, women do so all the time as well. In fact, in her cutesy word deflecting all the shame upon the man, she is doing the very thing her spiteful word is supposedly pointing out about the actions of the man she is victomizing. This is a extremely common tactic used by all bullies, male or female, since the beginning of time. As soon as you have done your favorite type of bullying, immediately point your finger at your victom and scream "STOP DOING THAT TO ME". This way everyone knows she is in fact the victom.

[–]meatboitantan 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Shit, I think womansplaining might be a real thing. She womansplained what mansplaining was and I found it condescending and rude of her.

[–]Soresmi 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Wait, when a womansplain meets a mansplain in the wild, and they mate and have kids, that would make their offspring womansplainmansplainspawn. Nevermind.

[–]slowest_hour 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

'the word is used, I don't know why you're surprised by it'

her entire defense is that she didn't just make it up right now. so she could just use any kind of abusive epithet and that's fine because 'people use that word' and context is entirely irrelevant

As a dude having gone to a super liberal arts college for 4 years with small conference size classes I can say than even among the most pc of the sjw's, patronizingly explaining things and interrupting people are definitely things guys do way more than girls

Yes, men do it more but the question is "why?" This blog (by a woman who is a communications blogger) does a nice job discussing this. http://www.marionspeaks.com/_blog/Marions_Communication_Tips/post/WHY_PEOPLE_INTERRUPT/

[–]Ryesagain 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

What are some misogynistic twin terms for these?

[–]totallynotarobotnope 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

That's hard. If you google "when a woman interrupts a man" 90% of what comes up is crap about how men interrupt women, etc.

The most balanced blog I have seen on interruptions is this: http://www.marionspeaks.com/_blog/Marions_Communication_Tips/post/WHY_PEOPLE_INTERRUPT/

She points out there are lots of reasons why people interrupt. Assigning it to gender (ONE study said men do it more than women. They did NOT state 'why'. That's a useless piece of shit study but has been quoted by every dog and Time) is irrational unless gender is the ONLY cause.

[–]TortoiseT 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I've been unable to relocate that exact study (so if you have a link do let me know) but if if I remember it correctly, the statistics from that paper are also horribly misused. As far as I can recall the paper did find that men interrupt more than women. However, men were equal opportunity interrupters: interrupting men and women at the same rates. The paper also found that women tended to interrupted other women at higher rates than they interrupted men. As such, the overall pattern was indeed that:
- Men interrupt more than women
- Women are being interrupted more
but one was unrelated to the other. The paper did not support the conclusion that women's higher rate of being interrupted was caused by male interrupting behavior.

[–]itty_bitty_beaver 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm going from memory, but there was a power dynamic that affected the rate, if I remember correctly. So, if there was no high status person in the room, like a supervisor, the interrupt rate was roughly equal, but the interrupt rate for men upped slightly, relative to women's, if there was someone of status around.

[–]totallynotarobotnope 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You got to shut that shit down.

90% of so-called 'manspereading' happens because men try to get comfortable. Women don't have a sack between their legs and for some guys, its uncomfortable to put their legs tight together. There may even be medical things going on but the assumption is "he's just a fucking guy spreading his legs". Until you have some compassion for the problem some men face, STFU about it. If a guy is being an asshole, sure, call him on it, but don't assume the reason any more than you should assume a person's health (But they LOOK healthy, so they can't be sick!)

[–]dalco -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Have you actually ever met a feminist that had used any of these words? I kinda doubt it. They seem more anti feminism than anything.

[–]totallynotarobotnope 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Real feminists, like me ( I am a man but truly a feminist too) don't insult men or use buzzwords that are meant to insult. Its 'modern SJW' types that do.

[–]cognitive8145 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

No offence mate, but if you believe that the movement has changed so much that the 'real feminists' are now a minority (at least in terms of power or influence), then 'real feminists' is not an accurate description of that group anymore. If a government gets overthrown in a coup then they aren't the government anymore.

The saddest thing about this whole situation (sincerely, not mocking you) is that self-confessed reasonable feminists - the type to actually believe in equality - often don't even realise that they aren't in control of the movement anymore. And so they go on supporting the SJWs by proxy without intending to or realising it while simultaneously hating that "some" feminists have become.

[–]totallynotarobotnope 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Oh, I am fully aware that modern feminism is in the hands of the crazies. Won't stop me from being one or believing in full equality but I won't identify with what a lot of people call feminism today.

Why does men's rights have to be anti-feminism? Isn't that the exact thing everyone here hates about feminists?

[–]DumpyLips 17 points18 points19 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The point of this post is to show a new word that's being shoehorned into the lexicon. The word fundamentally seeks to undermine men. This is precisely men's rights material as it's an example of an active attempt to marginalize men.

It is absolutely not this subs fault if you don't like the answer to the question:

who is pushing for the adoption of this word?

[–]Settlers6 11 points12 points13 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Why does men's rights have to be anti-feminism? Isn't that the exact thing everyone here hates about feminists?

No, what everyone hates about feminism is that they are anti-MEN in certain ways, whereas the men's rights movement is anti-FEMINISM, but not anti-WOMEN. That's an important difference.

[+]Senor_Met -8 points-7 points-6 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

By the definition of feminism, if you're anti-feminism then you're also anti-women.

I don't think you're actually anti-feminism, you're anti-asshole, but those people are a minority of the movement and by generalizing you're just making things worse.

[–]Settlers6 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

By the definition of feminism, if you're anti-feminism then you're also anti-women.

Here's the thing with 'definitions', they change. If I say, "someone drew a swastika on the wall", who do you think drew that? You will probably conclude that it was a (neo-)Nazi. And I don't blame you. I would think the same thing. But the swastika was originally a religious symbol in hinduism (for simplicity's sake). Then why did you think Nazi, when that was not its original meaning? Because Nazi's took it over: they created a different meaning for it, and made it 'popular'. Same with feminism: bad or misguided people all started calling themselves feminist and doing misdeeds in the name of feminism. That caused the meaning of the word to change. The meaning of a word is first and foremost in the minds of people, and second in a dictionary. A dictionary is descriptive and not authoritative, it describes the meaning that a word has to (most) people, not create a meaning and force people to abide by that meaning (if that were the case, words could never change meaning). Even outside the MRM, feminism has become a bad word in people's mind. The 'good' feminists could stop labeling themselves as feminists, or they should change how they label themselves to something like 'egalitarian', which actually fights for equality, whether it has to fight for men or for women.

I don't think you're actually anti-feminism, you're anti-asshole, but those people are a minority of the movement and by generalizing you're just making things worse.

It might be a minority but that doesn't mean it is not a powerful, influential minority. I mean, words like mansplaining or manspreading have entered the mainstream: Tom Hanks was accused of manspreading, the Time, CNN, the Guardian and Quora talk about it, a senator was accused of mansplaining etc. Yet it is not outright rejected by society/the mainstream as sexist against men. It appears to carry some validity or weight, when you accuse a man of manspreading.

If let's say a Republican came up with the phrase "jewing money" when talking about fraud, it would be rejected by the mainstream media and society at large immediately. Nobody, except neo-nazi sites (which aren't exactly influential or reputable), would even question if it is wrong to use the phrase. Yet mainstream media, senators and celebrities know of the phrases like the one in the OP and don't seem to consider it incredibly sexist. And society at large doesn't seem to be in an outcry at the media for it, so they are apparently indifferent to it and possibly in part in agreement.

Apparently, the reach of that feminist minority is far and wide. Which is a cause for concern, especially when the supposed great majority of good feminists are nowhere to be found. "Well, the minority is just more vocal" That just means you, the "good feminist", aren't vocal enough. If you care about feminism, why aren't you trying to be more vocal than that minority then? That's how you can save feminism. Make a blog entry or a YouTube video and explain how those supposed 'minority feminsts' are wrong and don't represent real feminism. But I don't think I have to tell you that those kind of counter-messages are few and far between: they don't come close to measuring up against the supposed "small minority of bad feminists".

Final note, if the largest feminist organisation in America, NOW, misunderstands something like the wage gap (which they do), leading to 'balancing' measures that unfairly disadvantage men (e.g. hiring quotas), wouldn't you say feminism harms men? What would it take, for you to be convinced that feminism harms men? Or will you say that NOW "isn't real feminism"? If they aren't, then where the hell is that supposedly big majority of real feminists hiding?

P.S. sorry that this got so long.

[–]Antisera 13 points14 points15 points 9 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

Yep. There truly are men who are sexist and do these sexist behaviors, crappy names aside, just like there are sexist women who do sexist behaviors. I understand the post by OP here is that it's not kind to use a sexist term, but it's not like these things don't actually happen or are made up by women. A lot of comments her seem to think the reality of some sexist men over explaining simple concepts or talking over women is an invention by angry females.

[–]Settlers6 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

A lot of comments her seem to think the reality of some sexist men over explaining simple concepts or talking over women is an invention by angry females.

I don't think anyone, exceptions aside, is denying that some men can be sexist. However, that does not justify the implementation of a word like "mansplaining", which makes an implication about all men or male behaviour.

[–]Antisera -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I never said those words were okay. I even called them sexist in my comment. I'm a woman, and while I personally don't understand why it's wrong to have a sexist name to call out a sexist behavior, the majority of men I know (including my husband) hate the terms so I don't use them because that's just respectful.

[–]Settlers6 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I never said those words were okay.[...]I personally don't understand why it's wrong to have a sexist name to call out a sexist behavior,

You contradict yourself. With the first bit, by saying "I never said those words are okay", you imply that you consider those words wrong. You say this to counter my implication that suggested that you thought they were okay to use. Okay, fair, maybe I misconstrued the meaning of your earlier comment.

However, one sentence later you say "I personally don't understand why it's wrong [to use those sexist words]". So apparently, I was right and you DO believe that it's okay to use those words. In your original reply to Senor_Met, you apparently did justify the use of those words, which is what I accused you of doing in the first place.

I understand the post by OP here is that it's not kind to use a sexist term, but it's not like these things don't actually happen or are made up by women.

That sentence is where the justification happens. You make the following mistake, which I also pointed out earlier: just because a small group of men IS sexist (which I conceded), that does not justify using a word that paints that particular sexist behaviour (e.g. explaining in a patronizing manner) as a trait of the people of that sex. Women explain condescendingly as well, at times. There is no reason to assume men do it more, except for personal anecdotes.

What also bothers me is that you say that it's okay to fight sexism with sexism. If someone is being sexist, can't you just tell them that and confront them with their sexism, instead of throwing sexism back (in a clearly non-ironic way)? Why use a term that implies that the gender of that person is somehow sexist, for what this one person did? As a non-sexist that you probably think you are, why would you use sexist generalisations for the actions of one person, who happens to be of a certain gender?

To put it in an analogy: Imagine if a black person talked back to me in some form and I responded with "Oh, are you BlackTalking?" (using BlackTalk as a play on 'back talking'). In that sentence, I am implying that back talk is somehow more characteristic of black people than of people of other races, because of the "Black" that I put in the word. If I believed talking back was done equally among every race, it wouldn't make sense to have a word that specifically accuses black people of doing it. Same goes for "mansplaining" (or manterupting).

[–]Antisera 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I see your points. I meant to say that I didn't understand why men didn't like it but I know they don't and so I don't use those words out of respect and understanding that they say they are wrong whether I understood why or not. Sorry for the confusion. It's hard to not get heated in these discussions and your attacking me has me defensive. However, at the end your explanation helped me understand why it's a bad thing to fight sexism with sexism even if the beginning was less gracious. I'm sorry for offending you.

[–]Settlers6 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I appreciate the politeness and self-awareness in your comment. To clarify myself, I was not offended. I might be, if someone told me IRL that I was mansplaining something, but this was not such a case. What caused me to respond in the first place, was incorrect reasoning, to justify the use of a word that generalises a gender to a certain extent. But we've mulled over that enough and I think we've come to a conclusion on the matter already.

I was simply in disagreement, but I think text on a screen can make it seem like I was more hostile/worked-up than I intended to be.

Have a nice day.

If you were truly for gender equality you would have no problem just calling yourself a feminist. I do as a man, and I also say black lives matter despite not being black. MRA's have some legitimate grievances, but the movement is so toxic, and on the face of it feels like if someone started a "white lives matter" group.

TLDR: If you learned the mission statements of feminist organizations you'd see they were about equality and agree with fixing many of the legitimate grievances MRA's tend to have. Being for men's rights is not on the face of it bad but MRA's are toxic shits

If you were truly for gender equality you would have no problem just calling yourself a feminist.

And if you were, you'd have no problem at all calling yourself an egalitarian. It's against certain aspects of feminism. Certain aspects of feminism are anti-male, so if you support gender equality you are necessarily anti-feminist to an extent. The OP is one of those areas where it's impossible to not be anti-feminist if you support men's rights: Feminists invent words like manterrupting, mansplaining, etc to attack men. MRAs support men's rights so we oppose them.

When feminists are supporting gender equality MRAs aren't against them, in fact the MRM was created by feminists and MRAs support feminists who support equality such as Christina Hoff Sommers

[–]Senor_Met 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Certain aspects of feminism are anti-male, so if you support gender equality you are necessarily anti-feminist to an extent.

I mean, you could say the exact same thing but flipped. If you're actually pro-equality then you're certainly anti-MRA to an extent as well. Why not just ignore the crazy vocal minorities and focus on the actual issues and the actual movements? Otherwise you're just fueling the fire and giving validation to the crazy minority of women-hating MRAs.

[–]Badgerz92 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

We aren't talking about crazy vocal minorities of feminism though. We currently have an anti-equality feminist president, and the Democrats just tried to put another one in office. Anti-equality feminists run many universities. They have a lot of power and influence, and many anti-equality views are central to mainstream feminism. If you think this is just a crazy minority then you don't know much about feminism, and should really lurk here more. You're just assuming we are focusing on a crazy minority instead of sticking around to learn why MRAs are actually against feminism. It's not because of crazy tumblr feminists, it's because of mainstream views within feminism both now and historically

I'd recommend checking out a new documentary about MRAs that will be online soon. You can look around for interviews with the director about her experience making the film. She started out as a feminist, but by the time the film was finished she no longer considered herself a feminist because she learned that "crazy vocal minority" wasn't much of a minority after all

[–]Senor_Met 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

We aren't talking about crazy vocal minorities of feminism though

In this post? Yeah, we are

[–]Badgerz92 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

That might be true, although "mansplaining" has started to become mainstream so it wouldn't surprise me if "manterrupting" did as well. But I don't think most users here believe that all feminists use words like manterrupting, just that some of them do and that's a problem. MRAs opposition to feminism in general is not limited to minority views, but that doesn't mean we will just completely ignore minority views. Manterrupting is a common enough view that even if it's a minority view it's something to be criticized. It might not be a majority view but it's also not limited to tumblr feminists, several mainstream media outlets have had articles about manterrupting

[–]Senor_Met 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I almost only hear "mansplaining" used ironically or by the one or two crazy feminists I know. "Manterrupting" I'd literally never heard of until this post.

I think minority stuff should be ignored because there are much bigger issues to tackle and all focusing on stuff like this does is create tension.

[–]Badgerz92 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

MRAs do focus on the bigger issues too. I know of a lot of feminists IRL who use mansplaining, it's used frequently by reddit feminists, and was even used by a Hillary Clinton SuperPac earlier this year. An Australian Senator accused a male Senator of mansplaining during a debate. We even had a reddit admin accuse moderators of mansplaining

[–]Senor_Met -5 points-4 points-3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's why the only tags they used are "feminism" and "hypocracy" (sic) right?

This is just part of the larger fact that this place is just as much anti-feminism as it is pro-men's rights. A post bashing feminists explodes and none of the comments are talking about any serious issues, just bashing feminists while doing all the same things they bash feminists for on a daily basis. It just further drives a wedge between the two parties and will only ever make things more divided and worse. We should be trying to extend a hand to feminists instead of fighting them if we ever want to actually fucking get something done.

[–]llamasR4life 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's just a bad typo that's meant to say r/antifeminism.

[–]Bikertron 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This definition is spot on. As if there don't exist women who love the sound of their own voice, despite that it's awful and they're actually inarticulate and wrong about everything.

That said; I still have yet to properly encounter this nu-school feminism in real life. I've been consulting with a big global firm just lately that prides itself on diversity and inclusion and all that, in the city of Londonistan, good mix of people of all backgrounds; not at all a 'boys club' and yet everyone just gets on, does their job, enjoys very politically incorrect banter in the office, mocks stories about bullshit socjus. Maybe there are people there silently fuming in the minority but they would have surely caused a stink or tattled to HR by now, one would have thought. Maybe this hypocrisy and entitlement can only gain traction on the internet where pointless and unlikeable people suddenly have a voice.

Can someone mansplain this to me please?

[–]Siganid 12 points13 points14 points 9 years ago (18 children) | Copy Link

Sure:

Feminists insist that women are superior to men and therefore should be a class above men that has social protection from insults and interruptions. This protected class also has no obligation to give any regard to the opinions of the inferior lower class that is comprised of gender(s) not female.

To enforce this, they invent sexist terminology to ridicule non females that act as equals to the (supposedly) superior female class. This is analogous to racist slurs, or sexual orientation based slurs, such as (I think you already know a few.)

In this case, the oppressed group has retaken the term in an attempt to disempower the hate speech of feminism. Similar responses have worked for racial and orientation based hate speech, and hopefully it works here as well.

Go ahead, say woosh. Yawn.

[–]meddlingmages 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Could you please use the word "mansplain" in a sentence?

[–]12remember -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

Your world view grosses me out

[–]Siganid 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

A lot of people respond that way to egalitarianism.

It is the belief that all people deserve equality, after all. People that desire to raise themselves above others in order to trample them often view it negatively.

[–]12remember -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

You misread me, it's your perception of feminism that is gross. Feminism is about raising the status of women to that of men. You sound like you have a vicious victim complex the way you talk about it

[–]Siganid 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

If feminism was what you claim it to be, it would acknowledge that interrupting someone is rude, regardless of gender, and both genders should try to avoid it.

That's not what it's done here, is it?

[–]12remember -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Well in the case where one gender is obviously a greater offender, again, the answer would be balance, just bringing women to the point of men. Like if you had two test tubes and one was lower, you would pour more into the lower side to make them even. In this case, they aren't arguing for no interrupting or patronizing explanation, just to not receive it explicitly because of their gender.

It's like why BET exists but WET doesn't. All major Hollywood production companies and television studies have a bias for white actors, resulting in steep underrepresentation in the media. As a result, a network aims to bridge that gap by improving the side that needs improving.

What was the last major live action Hollywood picture you saw with an Asian guy as the main actor?

[–]Siganid 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Are you seriously arguing that interrupting is wrong, but since men allegedly do it more than women that makes it acceptable behavior for women?

Firstly: Show your sources. I doubt very strongly that women get interrupted more than men, but since it's your claim the onus is on you to prove it.

Secondly: If you think a behavior is wrong, don't do it to other people. Your attempts to rationalize the behavior while simultaneously condemning it as wrong are the root of the problem.

BET exists because blacks are more racist than whites and there isn't a stigma on their racism. They therefore demand black only entertainment. For non racists, the race of the people in their tv box is irrelevant. Not really interested in this tangent because it's ludicrously racist.

However, since I enjoy a lot of korean and bollywood cinema and I find your asian comment hilarious. When was the last time you watched an asian movie with a white lead? Bollywood? To declare that our society (and only our society) is required to rotate races through everything because your racism demands it is malarkey.

You are exposing yourself as very sexist, and appallingly racist. It's a very unflattering look.

[–]12remember -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago* (8 children) | Copy Link

"BET exists because blacks are more racist than whites."

I stopped there. Your world view is stunningly narrow and backwards. You're a racist sexist shit bag

I don't even understand where people like you come from. Like...go read a book...

[–]Siganid 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You stopped there because your bias caused cognitive dissonance, and you decided an ad hominem attack was better than admitting you are wrong.

Don't worry, it's completely normal.

The next step is to block me while claiming you are more open minded and too highly educated for me to possibly understand. Then you find an echo chamber to preach to the choir in, and become less and less relevant to the world you live in.

Farewell, and good luck.

:::::slow clap::::

[–]12remember 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Here's a basic crash course since you don't seem to know American history.

150 years ago slavery ended. A large portion of the African American population were now newly freed slaves.

In 1964, about 50 years ago, segregation was made illegal with the passing of the Civil Rights Act. Fifty. Years.

Grandparents are around that remember segregation. But so many whites in the US don't understand how things could still be messed up. How maybe outlawing segregation doesn't end racial inequality and systematic oppression overnight. Capitalism preserves wealth structures. Educated people have educated children. Now I'm not saying that an individual African American in an inner city area cannot succeed, but they are at a distinct statistical disadvantage from, say, someone whose parents went to a prestigious university.

To think that racism against colored people could disappear from a society over the course of 50 years like that is entirely ridiculous. If you cannot acknowledge institutional racism against colored people, along with the social and economic bias against women, then you are intentionally doing mental gymnastics to play victim and its pathetic

[–]Siganid1 point 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Congratulations you've almost achieved step two. You got very close when you accused me of being ignorant. Keep going.

Now is the time to find an echo chamber, because your flawed logic traps and moving goalposts make a debate worthless.

Your entire post above is a refusal to address what you were obligated to show evidence for, and instead you attempt to "prove racism is real" which is addressing a statement I didn't actually make. I never claimed racism doesn't exist, in fact my claim that blacks are more racist than whites is inclusive of the idea that racism does exist on both sides.

You attempted to slyly accuse me of something I didn't say. Bad form.

This is a place for an oppressed minority to discuss it's problems, and you are clearly here to bully it's members from a position of privilege.

[–]12remember2 points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

You're just trolling now. Firstly, men are not a minority, by definition. Secondly, the few legitimate grievances by the MRA community (cuz there are some, largely around child custody/payment laws, and low rates of domestic abuse reporting) are again, espoused by feminist organizations already. I am in a position of privilege, because I am a man. And I acknowledge that freely and with ease.

[–]Siganid1 point 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Double standards of all kinds should be opposed. Working for gender equality means countering unfairness at all levels. People need to be very aware of the human bias of justifying mistreatment by thinking of oneself as a victim and ones aggressive actions as defensive.

How about you read the FAQ for this subreddit instead of being a twit?

This is a subreddit to talk about men's issues in the 21st century. Men commit suicide more than women, get longer jail sentences, and get awarded paternity rights less. They have more workplace deaths, are required to sign up for the draft or face consequences, and suffer more health issues while receiving less treatment. Men pay higher childcare costs and are burdened with providing for the family at the expense of feeling connected. This sub is about changing these situations for the better, if you think you can boil it down to:

No, just the girls who reject our advances!

You are a simplistic twit

[–]BecauseFeelz 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

Notice how you appeal to my emotions, in saying "women are people too", as if with no reasoning or facts because feels (note username), I should feel bad for defending men rights.

I understand you're probably 16, caught up in SJW beliefs and that women are somehow mythical, helpless creatures and they need YOU to stand up for their rights.. but that's just a little sexist bud. Both genders have issues that need addressing. Just because this group fights for mens' rights, doesn't mean they should be dismissed because men are not important in the world.

[–]LeSuperNova -5 points-4 points-3 points 9 years ago (50 children) | Copy Link

I, too, am passing through from /all.

I was hoping it was satire, but I assume it's just a bunch loser-rejects who hate women and blame them for all of their problems.

adding this beta-shithole to my RES banned list.

[–]smallworries1 16 points17 points18 points 9 years ago (18 children) | Copy Link

A lazy uneducated fool just called us beta. Weep.

[–]LeSuperNova 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

I'm sorry, but identity politics are for the lazy and uneducated. Enjoy ranting and raving about shit most people don't give two fucks about. Keep feeling oppressed, nobody feels bad for you because you aren't.

[–]smallworries1 12 points13 points14 points 9 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link

Staying ignorant is your choice. But wearing that as a badge of pride is laughable. Shouldn't expect more from a loser who uses the word 'beta' seriously.

[+]LeSuperNova -6 points-5 points-4 points 9 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

Shouldn't expect more from a loser who uses the word 'beta' seriously.

Do you not have "second-class" grievances? isn't this the point of the sub?

Choosing to blame one's own problems on others is being ignorant.

[–]smallworries1 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

Still though... using a word like "beta"??

[–]LeSuperNova 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

still though, did I not use the word correctly?

Does the word beta trigger you?

[–]Throwawayingaccount 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link

still though, did I not use the word correctly?

Honestly, no, you didn't.

At least research the stereotypes you throw around. Go look up Alpha/Beta/Omega male.

[–]LeSuperNova 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

At least research the stereotypes you throw around. Go look up Alpha/Beta/Omega male.

I'm quite aware and used it specifically to elicit a response, maybe i'm not so ignorant and uneducated as some of you think.

[–]Throwawayingaccount3 points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

So it is not from ignorance that you used the wrong word, but intention? Are you trying to point out the irony in improper labels? If so, bravo, that's actually an impressive literary technique.

[–]LeSuperNova1 point 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

intentional irony, thank you for catching on.

[–]Throwawayingaccount3 points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Very well. When someone asks if they used a term correctly, I operate under the assumption that they are either unsure or misinformed.

[–]smallworries1 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Made me cringe. You're triggered by this post, aren't you?

browsing all, if i step in shit, i'm gonna wipe it off my shoe and look around at who dropped it.

Shit-posts like this aren't doing any of you justice, but hey, i'm just an ignorant uneducated loser, right?

[–]oshmkufa2010 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Last time I checked, I haven't chosen to have less legal rights than women. Nobody is blaming women for the lack of legal rights, we're merely arguing that we should have those rights and feminism (not women, very important difference) is perpetuating the notion that women don't have as many rights as men, when the opposite is the case.

[–]LeSuperNova 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Thank you for a proper explanation and I understand your point, but don't completely agree with it.

With that said, currently 2764 upvotes\people are doing a terrible job of expressing that same argument which does nothing but diminish the sub's cause. Shitposts like this, which seems to be the vast majority of what floats it's way to the top of /all from this sub, are what most people see and thus your grievances are easily dismissed\not taken seriously.

[–]oshmkufa2010 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Okay, we can try to sort this out like adults, if you want to. Which part of my explanation don't you agree with? Maybe we can find some sommon ground.

Pardon me for thinking we should outlaw cosmetic genital mutilation of infants regardless of gender.

Pardon me for thinking that if a situation is so terrible that we require conscription to defend the country, that we shouldn't ignore 50% of the talent pool due to gentialia shape.

Pardon me for thinking people on trial should have the right to face and question their accusers in a court of law, regardless of what they are accused of.

Pardon me for thinking.

[–]LeSuperNova -3 points-2 points-1 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Pardon me for stepping in shit while browsing /r/all and pointing it out. If that's what most of you think, then 3357 (currently) people are doing an absolute shit job of expressing that.

[–]Throwawayingaccount 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

It is actually a very real problem of trying to fight a non-gendered issue by claiming it is a gender based issue.

Take for example gamergate. Whether you agree or disagree with it, it originally founded around "Hey, if you're reviewing a game, you should probably disclose the fact that you are in a sexual relationship with the developer." And that got pushback and branded as a gendered issue.

The original post helps bring to light this problem.

[–]LeSuperNova 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The original post helps bring to light this problem.

by poking fun? read the shit comments along with this post, it hardly does your argument any justice nor does it provide your grievances context to the masses who see this post. Nobody is going to come here and attempt to educate themselves when they see shitposts like this. Just looks like a big woman-bashing club to everyone by a bunch of guys who have had one or a few bad run-ins with women in particular.

A variety of methods employed in tandem is usually the optimal way to communicate a message like this.

Facts, logic, humor, satire, and emotional appeal can be used in tandem. Each one has it's own purpose, upsides, and downsides.

But you do bring up a valid point: should this sub be limited to one post on /r/all, then this is not the optimum one.

The absence of opinion is impossible without absence of knowledge.

This is ignorance. Are you admitting ignorance? It's not a bad thing to do.

"Understanding of one's own ignorance is the first step to knowledge" - Socrates paraphrase

What you most likely have is a weak opinion that you can't defend, which is why you are refusing to defend your opinion.

[–]pansexual_potato 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I mean, in my family and in most gatherings with adult friends, men tend to interrupt way more. And a certain guy will point out when women interrupt, but not when men do, and when women point out that he interrupted, he just walks away. Doesn't mean we need a term for it but we've had to address that issue here in my house.
