CMV - is the friendzone even real?

Many relationships start when male-female (or gay) friends start having feelings for each other. It's a perfectly natural and normal way to fall in love. Many women do it, many men do it, and it's perfectly acceptable to fall in love with a close friend that you spend a lot of time with: trips, concerts, homework, school projects, co-workers working in the same team, and so on.

Friendzone exists, but it's defined as a creepy loser who hits on a woman and expects that she will eventually fall in love with him.

So - is the friendzone even real? Friends fall in love, both male and female (I really think that female fall in love more frequently with their male friends, the oneitis is far more present in women than men).
