As a single dad who is about to get child support finally from my sons mom if you’re using the money to support your kid then there’s no issue.

But I am curious how this works. Like buying clothes for them and other things. I don’t know how it would differentiate me buying a bunch of clothes from like Walmart from someone buying a tv or a video game or something or even adult clothes.

If anyone knows how this would work I’d be genuinely interested. Thanks!

[–]zendick11 points 5 years ago [recovered] (9 children) | Copy Link

this is fake but, welfare cards already have these restrictions, the system knows the valid skus for places you can use it.

[–]The_Real_Raw_Gary 15 points16 points17 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Ahhh ok that makes sense. I didn’t know it was that in depth for the welfare cards. Thanks so much for the answer

[–]Tom_Bradys_Nutsack -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Of course, gotta keep that quality of life low as possible for the poor folk.

[–]Infinite_M0nkeys 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

More just that the government wants their aid to actually be helping people.

[–]Tom_Bradys_Nutsack -4 points-3 points-2 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Yeah that’s why no lobster or steaks for them. I like your passion but there’s a lot wrong.

[–]mysteriousmetalscrew 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You can absolutely buy lobster or steak with an EBT card. It’s probably irresponsible to blow your monthly budget on expensive food, but it’s completely legitimate.

What you can not buy is a $75 bottle of wine.

And if you think there’s something wrong with that, then I don’t know what to tell you.

[–]Tom_Bradys_Nutsack -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I’m aware you can currently, I’m talking about proposed legislation. However, you miss the point.

[–]Throwinthetexts 17 points18 points19 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

As someone who worked in a liquor store and saw numerous child support debit cards used for cigs and booze this isn’t true everywhere

[–]zendick11 points 5 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

Child support cards don't have any restrictions, I was saying welfare cards do.

[–]Throwinthetexts 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ah yeah in that case you’re correct...didn’t stop people from asking let me tell you lol

[–]adamhasabeard 13 points14 points15 points 5 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Single dad here, I get child support from the mom. You can spend it on whatever you want tbh. There are no restrictions. It’s a preloaded debit card. I pay bills, use it to pay for the aftercare the kids get, buy the kids clothes, video games, literally anything.

As long as the kids get whatever they need, wtf does it matter what you spend it on? They literally teach this in the divorce classes I had to take. Lol. But now If your kids are going hungry and don’t have what they need, it’s shitty of someone to spend it on themselves.

I pay for everything the kids and i need out of my own check and use the support for whatever we want outside of that.

[–]h0nest_Bender 8 points9 points10 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

As long as the kids get whatever they need, wtf does it matter what you spend it on?

I think the issue is that a lot of people don't use that money for their kids.

[–]adamhasabeard 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

True. But that extends beyond child support. Some people just suck and don’t care about their kids.

[–]h0nest_Bender 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ya, I don't think there's an easy way to force bad parents to not be shitbags.

[–]Hoodratshit1212 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

How do you know that?

[–]h0nest_Bender 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I know every divorced parent in the world.

[–]Adito99 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Hey did you know people speed in cars? Guess we should stop issuing drivers licenses and building highways.

[–]Harry-wells 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Exactly. Our child support card isn't accepted by the light company, the phone company, our kids pediatrician or pharmacy; can't be used to buy a money order to pay rent. We can use it at the gas station and grocery store though. Yes, we'll fill up the car with it. Yes we'll buy the kids Lego's with it. Yes, we'll make sure every one the house has decent clothes with it. Because that's what it's for.

It's not to buy this specific thing only, it's just part of the household budget.

[–]adamhasabeard 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You can’t do all that? That’s weird. Mine is literally accepted anywhere a debit card is.

[–]Harry-wells 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It's a third party visa debit card that doesn't have anyones name on it, so i'm limited on who will accept it. Works on amazon though.

[–]adamhasabeard 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh boooo. That sucks.

[–]mathewkorbin 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don't think you'd ever see this happen. It would be an argument of what you think is necessary for your child and what is not. I can think of a number of purchases that could sound legit, that also sounds non-essential.

Like buying a bike for the child, perhaps a used car for mom, or maybe a new refrigerator. None of those items are essential, but you could argue that a bike provides exercise, the used car allows mom to get to work and take little Susie to soccer practice, and a new refrigerator stores food so their budget extends further by keeping food fresher for longer periods (or maybe lowers energy costs or allows them to stock up on food).

[–]RighteousRetribution 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I have to respond to this post of yours because its really bugging me

What stops any one parent who is receiving child support to then spend the money on anything and everything? "Oh this expensive perfume i got for me is actually for the betterment of my child, as it improves my mental health and that lets me be a better mom". There is no limit to what you can stretch the excuses for as a viable option to buy, following your argument.

I understand bikes, food, bills for school and what not. That is strictly for the child. But a car? Hell no. If the mom (or dad) has no car, shitty or no fridge, and the other parent does (otherwise how/why would the other party pay any money), maybe the child shouldn't be with the former parent?

Why isn't it any one individual's responsibility to have this car, good fridge etc. by themselves? Why can't they just earn/work for it themselves, rather than expecting the spouse to fund it all? If the spouse paying for it can do it, why can't the other party?

By that logic, all of it (barring food) should be taken back from the parent that received the money once the child turns 18. Or have it all be in the child's name so it's not just magically the parent's ownership entirely once they turn 18.

[–]carnage11eleven 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

It wouldn't work. People will still find ways to scam the system. They'd be selling groceries on Facebook for cash.

[–]red-seminar 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

its a numbers game. nothing is impenetrable but throwing up some walls helps tremendously

[–]Adito99 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But how much does it hurt normal users of the program? If abuse rates are below some threshhold the point of these punishments is questionable at best.

But I know I'm on /r/pussypassdenied and you're here for a hate boner. Don't let me slow you down.

[–]carnage11eleven 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It would definitely get more dad's to pay I think. I'm not in the situation but knowing that the money was going to the kids and not mom's drug habit would be nice if I were.

[–]Cheeseburgerbil 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It wouldnt work and hey, your kid deserves a tv too some times. I suppose they could restrict alcohol and tobacco purchases but that's about it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I have a Flexible Spending Account which gets me medical supplies at stores but not anything else really. Has to be FSA approved, it'd be reasonably easy to make a card like the OP

[–]cis4smack 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Can just go to bank and take the money out. Not necessarily tied to card only.

[–]DrBoby 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It usually works with authorized shops and lines of products.

I have a card for food expenses from my company, I can only buy food I can eat without cooking and pay restaurants. It's annoying because it works with half shops, but after a few month you learn where it works.

A better system would be to just show your ex where you spent money like a bank statement, if you spend your child support in a casino it just shows her that

[–]Pippin_LaFlow1 points 5 years ago [recovered] (88 children) | Copy Link

I hope this is true 😂

[–]FrivolousTracklights 470 points471 points472 points 5 years ago (36 children) | Copy Link

Currency is fungible so this won't change much.

It also smells like something dreamed up by an internet startup to insert themselves into the child support system and take a couple percent off the top.

[–]mtheory007 139 points140 points141 points 5 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

I am assuming that internet startup is Bank of America, just like they did with Unemployment Insurance!

[–]DigNitty 32 points33 points34 points 5 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

A automatically deposited debit card is objectively easier than receiving checks every couple of weeks.

Though it doesn't need to be run through BoA.

[–]mtheory007 7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Agreed, but they are already involved is some places.

[–]FecalEncephalopath 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I was working customer service for the unemployment debit cards from May to September and saw plenty of people with fees pulling money out of BofA ATMs. Even if you have a bank account already a lot of states wouldn't use it. I only had 3 customers say their first load was sent to their regular accounts and the rest was going to a prepaid card.

Also if anyone has one of those cards I would say take your money out as soon as possible. I had a gal who lived in some obscure town in on the west coast, born and raised there yet 7,000 to 8,000 dollars were withdrawn and spent on the east coast. She swore that she had never left her hometown. Plenty of others but that one stuck in my head for some reason. There was a lot of fraud combined with the sensitive security on the cards meant a lot of calls for the fraud department. Last I heard it is an hour minimum wait for fraud.

P.S. Stop having other people make your state unemployment account and unemployment card online account. Unless it's a medical reason of course or age issue (minor with a card). I don't think that has anything to do with the main cause of all the unauthorized transactions taking place but it occurred way too often and caused a lot of issues for people. I heard them all husbands, wives, boyfriend, girlfriend, friends etc.

P.S.S. And using Venmo/CashApp like services. It could just be coincidence but if there were unauthorized transactions more often than not they also would have used one of those services in the past. They aren't supposed to work with the cards but it can go through.

[–]foster_remington 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

have you ever heard of direct deposit

[–]BackHandLegend 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I HATE direct deposit because if they fuck up your hours or you want to see your hours, you have to go through a much bigger hoop than simply not cashing it in it and talking to your immediate supervisor.

Had to get an email and password one time because I wanted to see my hours. Except the company involved had another 3rd party company to validate and do it for the business???

Fuck all that trouble give me a check!

[–]foster_remington 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

sounds like you're a dumdum

[–]BackHandLegend 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sweet and in your mouth 🥰

[–]Bane-o-foolishness 25 points26 points27 points 5 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

When baby mama can only spend it at Kroger then it reduces the fungibility to a point where they won't be pushing for more constantly.

[–]brockbridges540 49 points50 points51 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It could actually lead to women giving custody to the father's. Too many times they fight to keep the kids only for the paycheck.

[–]Bane-o-foolishness 21 points22 points23 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That works for me. If my kids has been raised by my after the divorce they'd have been much better off.

[–]Bsmosh 6 points7 points8 points 5 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

You say this, but it isn't very hard to make a purchase at Kroger for a disposable cash gift card

[–]f1zzz 11 points12 points13 points 5 years ago*2 (3 children) | Copy Link

I’d assume it would work like an EBT card and only eligible purchases go through in it. The gift card, booze, etc, wouldn’t be able to be charged to the card.

However, I doubt this system would be tenable for child support. Someone needs a larger place of living, and possible a change in transportation to accommodate a dependent.

[–]Bsmosh 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Makes sense, thank you

[–]filthy_harold 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

You also need to buy kids clothes. Stores that only sell kids clothes are typically more expensive than department stores that sell cheap clothes so you would need an EBT-type system in place at these department stores to ensure the card is only used on children's clothing, toys, toiletries, etc. It would make for a very complicated system to only allow for this card to be used on things for a child unless you also added a reimbursement system where you submit a receipt for things.

I think a much simpler system would just be having something like an HSA card where it can be used anywhere as long as the purchases are eligible. An agency would watch transactions and if something suspicious pops up, the parent using the card would have to provide receipts and reimburse the child support fund for anything that is explicitly for them.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

My fuckface of an ex fiancé used to work for a major retailer in Canada that’s from the US (ok I’ll just say it it was part of the Marshall’s group) and they had customers who would come in with cards issued by publicly funded services and they could only buy kids clothes and shoes etc with it... so those systems are possible to put in place but I agree, difficult.

[–]wutang111 6 points7 points8 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

It's called an online statement.

Fraud would be trivial to detect.

[–]Bsmosh 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I personally haven't seen an online itemized receipt for my purchases, in any supermarket at least. But to clarify, I'm just playing devil's advocate here and would love for more accountability

[–]wutang111 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I looked into the card a little bit and it actually restricts what items can be purchased with the card. Anything that can't be used by a child can't be purchased.

I think it's only available in Delaware right now.

Edit: Nevermind, it was a fake story from 2016. Same card as the one in OPs picture.

Still a great idea though.

[–]Equivalent_Chipmunk 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is true, but if you call your bank they often have a lot more information about your purchase than what’s shown on your statement

[–]Bane-o-foolishness 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If they are as tough as they are with EBT cards then that should be minimal.

[–]ctwise12 26 points27 points28 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Honestly I’m not even mad bro. There are way too many families out here treating the system like a quick buck. If this kicks out the ass-wipes then it improves quality of life a hell of a lot for the potential child victims. I grew up in the system and stayed with a few foster families that were no bueno. At the expense of a small percentage, you would a find large surplus of government money allotted towards this sector, slowly working the chain up. My girlfriends life goal is to work towards bettering the lives of children going through the foster system, and boy does she kick ass

[–]dumnem 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Noble goal, though definitely something not easily achievable.

[–]detourxp 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Reminds me of the push to drug test people drawing benefits but turns out costs more to test people than you save keeping them out.

[–]brockbridges540 6 points7 points8 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's a foot in the door. Change has to start some place.

[–]TXR22 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Not to mention that people who want to game the system can just resell the shit they buy on the card. Stuff like baby formula can be exported to countries like China for an absolute killing.

[–]PretendEffects 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly.

[–]freman 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If I was one stuck paying child support, I honestly would pay that extra...

[–]el_sandino 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Dollars and Bitcoin are fungible but card networks like visa can easily use broad strokes like MCC codes to simply disable purchases at certain kinds of stores. They take your dollars, charge merchants for the “convenience” and then let issuing banks run 17% interest to fuck consumers. It’s a scam. We can’t give up cash.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It kinda works with food stamps/tanf food.

[–]Hax_ 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

TIL about the word fungible.

[–]IAmARobot 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

happened in oz with the Cashless Debit Card scheme. The govt pays Indue Inc (which is run by people with close links to the govt, and a political donor) $4000 per person on the scheme to supply those people with a Cashless Debit Card so they can't cash out their welfare and spend it on alcohol, smokes, gambling etc. needless to say, a bit of a grift.

to put this more eloquently

"During the welfare card trials, Indue has received between $4,000 to $10,000 for each participant in the trial, even though the Newstart allowance is less than $14,000 per year. Certainly, there are start-up costs involved in servicing this type of program, but up to $10,000 for a private company to manage an account only worth up to $14,000 annually raises questions of whether the Indue company is the most cost-effective option for this scheme."

[–]Wretched_Form 64 points65 points66 points 5 years ago (23 children) | Copy Link

Me too. I pay 968 a month for one kid, have for 7 years. A kid I used to get roughly half the time. Baby momma bought a condo and a new car being a waitress, with a class A cdl and numerous skills I cant afford a car. Never work less than 50 hours a week. Systems broke bud.

Holy shit, brilliant!

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 5 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

To be fair you normally have to have sex more than once to get pregnant.

[–]Xero2814 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

What?! No you don't. That's some middle school bullshit you hear when people don't get proper sex ed.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Statistically yes you do. You ovulate for like a week out of every month. Not every ejaculation will cause impregnation and many many people have fertility issues as well. Yes you could get pregnant the first try but it's not only not guaranteed but also somewhat unexpected.

[–]Xero2814 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Saying that more sex increases chance of pregnancy is not the same thing as saying you are less likely to get pregnant the first time you have sex. You aren't.

That might not have been what you meant but it is how you worded it.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

You have a reading comprehension problem. Reread what I said. I specifically jokes you "normally" ie as in statistically speaking the average number of sexual encounters between pregnancies is larger than one, have to have sex more than once to get someome pregnant.

Give it up.

[–]doc1127 18 points19 points20 points 5 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

If you are comparing EBT to SNAP (food stamps) then no, EBT and child support are in no way treated remotely the same. Child support can be and is spent on anything the recipient wants to spend it on with zero oversight regardless of of the child or each parent is affected.

[–]dumnem 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

well the reason being the money is fungible. Ie, if you don't spend on X because Y pays for it you can instead spend your own money on Z.

However I do agree with it in any case as it at least guarantees that the amount goes towards the child that it should.

[–]doc1127 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Actually it’s because once money is deposited in a bank account it is impossible to track/monitor how those dollars are spent. For example: if my company puts $1000 in my bank account every week, and child support puts $500 in my bank account prove where and how I spent those child support dollars vs. paycheck dollars.

[–]Psycho_Linguist 8 points9 points10 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Thats exactly what the person above you meant when they said money is fungible

[–]doc1127 6 points7 points8 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]eraser8 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Just to clarify, EBT is a way benefits are distributed. It isn't a welfare program in and of itself.

So, if you're enrolled in SNAP or WIC or TANF, you'll almost certainly be getting your money electronically, through EBT.

[–]doc1127 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

SNAP, WIC, and TANF all have and require government oversight don’t they?

Child support has zero oversight.

[–]Niku-Man 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Honestly that's how any government program should be. Government doesn't need to be involved with how people spend their money. Sure you'll hear all kinds of anecdotes about someone living lavishly on welfare programs, but that's usually partisan bullshit. A few anecdotes doesn't mean shit. I can tell you all about how my neighbor won millions in the lottery - doesn't mean it's a common occurrence.

Just think - Its no different than your boss restricting how you spend your paycheck. Do you think your boss should be able to tell you how much you need to spend on your kids, whether you can buy something for yourself, or where you can live? No? That's what I thought - once the money is in your hands, it should be yours. Child support, welfare, whatever, is no different and I'd love to see someone dig themselves a hole trying to explain... "Oh but it's for the child!" LOL, deadbeat dads don't give a shit about kids - they just want to spite the mother whom they now hate. People are so willing to let everyone in poverty starve if it means one freeloader doesn't get a dime. It's honestly disgusting how people talk about this stuff with zero compassion and zero sense of their own privilege.

If you got a situation where a child is seriously neglected then you shouldn't be complaining about child support. Call child services for christsakes!

[–]doc1127 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

No worries. Honestly as much as people want there to be some way to hold the recipient accountable for how child support is spent there is no feasible way to do so. Hold support is to care for the child and cover the additional expenses of a child. That means it can go to rent for a bigger apartment, a car payment for a newer/safer/bigger/more reliable car, etc...
unfortunately the biggest and most important reason why there will never be a way to regulate or control how child support is spent is because of angry/bitter/controlling child support payers. If the person paying is angry/bitter/controlling they will drag the recipient into court at every opportunity they can. Family courts are already nasty, toxic, overworked places, they don’t have time for this shit.

[–]Clayfingers 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah, sick of the arguments. The parent receiving support always needs more, the parent paying support always wants to pay less. No one concentrates on the children. It’s all “me,me, me!”

[–]doc1127 -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

100%. All three sides (child, recipient, payer) always cry foul. The only 3 people that benefit in family court are the judge and the 2 attorneys.

[–]NotAmericanDontCare -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

So it's the father's fault they want their money buying food and clothes and schooling for their kids?

Not the mother's fault for buying cigarettes, alcohol and extensions instead?

Interesting.

[–]Xero2814 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Rent and car payments are pretty valid things to spend child support on. I doubt any of the bitter people in this thread are paying so much in child support that it wouldn't be eaten up right there.

After that if they choose to spend their own money on something the other parent doesn't approve of then that is really none of their business at that point.

This sort of thing is just a sad bid for control in a situation where they feel they have lost power.

[–]Hoodratshit1212 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

How do you know she’s buying that shit? “The father wants to buy food and clothes and spend money on their education” LOL Way to counter with some absolutely made-up bullshit. If those kids are eating, wearing clothes, and going to school, then SHE used her money and the dad’s likely paying her back for part of it. She pays for all their kid’s expenses directly so the father is paying child support to pay her back, which is exactly how it should be. So she can spend her money on whatever she wants, you still need to pay her back for the cost of at least half of your kids expenses. Why? Because it’s your fucking kid too, and chances are high that SHE is the primary custodial parent who raises those kids, feeds them, emotionally supports them, takes them to school, pays the bills, houses them, raises them, keeps them safe, parents them, takes them shopping, pays school fees, etc. The parent with primary custody directly pays for ALL of their kids needs and expenses, while the dad is living in a condo somewhere alone and just sees his kids on weekends at the park and HOPEFULLY pays child support for his own kids expenses once a month. You act as if kids are free and cost nothing, and as if dads shouldn’t have to financially support their own kids. The mother does literally everything to raise those kids, the dad needs to contribute. Period. Grow up.

Your response speaks volumes when it comes to family court.

At no point did I ever state the genitals of the parent paying child support nor did I state the genitals of the parent reviving child support.

You need to sit down and do some self evaluation if you are so quick to assume only men pay child support and only women receive child support.

[–]Hoodratshit1212 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I went to law school. The primary custodial parent is usually the mother. The non-custodial parent pays child support to the custodial parent- usually the dad. This is common knowledge, and frankly it’s completely irrelevant to that person’s entire point. Your argument is just dumb.

Well when you go to Asda does your bank statement say "peas, beer, dildo" or does it say "Asda"?

Why would the card know what you're buying.

Also, what, you have to separate your shop out into two piles, the stuff that's for kids and the stuff that isn't? And pay on different cards?

Mate you'd have to be pretty thick to think this is a thing

[–]KorrectingYou 6 points7 points8 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Why would the card know what you're buying.

We've got these things called computers that you input the items via a barcode reader and they can tally it all up. These computers know which items are and aren't approved for a given payment method. EBT cards can't buy general merchandise or alcohol, so the computer will only debit the total for the food, and the customer pays any remaining amount with a different method.

Further, there's a government system in place to approve which places can accept EBT/SNAP payments. Not all gas stations can accept EBT for example. If a store can't follow the purchasing restrictions on these cards, they won't be approved, and if they're caught cheating the system, they'll face legal repurcussions.

Generally, the vast majority of the population will abuse systems if they can and they believe there will be no repercussions. It's just a shitty aspect human nature. Unfortunately currently in the United States the system is overwhelmingly set up for females to abuse the system.

This isn't an incel stance, it's just an unfortunate truth. I'm all for equal rights for females - closing the pay gap, maternity leave, sexual freedom, etc.

The three primary areas men need equality in are child custody rights, child support, and divorce settlements.

And I know this goes against the reddit narrative of equality isn't good enough, we must shift the power balance of oppressors in favor to the oppressed. It's a shit take reddit has.

[–]Pyro636 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]ninjapro 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The family court problem (as well as violent crime sentencing disparity) is a direct symptom of the societal expectation/view that men are strong, bread-winning, and independent while women of submissive, pitiable, and deserving of more leeway. Hell, this whole sub is based on the subversion of that expectation.

The vast majority of feminists that point at the patriarchy would agree that those disparities exist.

[–]worldspawn00 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Patriarchy is an issue, and actually the mothers tending to get custody is a symptom of it. It's part of the broader discussion on sexism and the role of men and women. Our patriarchal society puts men in the role of the worker and women in child/home care. It's the patriarchy that defaults custody to mothers.

[–]Itisme129 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Oh I see now! So even when the women are favored by the institutional courts, it's still somehow mens fault! Thanks for clearing that up.

[–]worldspawn00 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

It's not 'men's fault' it's a societal issue that needs addressing. It's predefined gender roles which are a symptom of patriarchy. It's a Judge, born in the 50s that never knew anyone but their mother as the person who took care of him and his siblings while their father was at the office for 12 hours a day. The lawyer who wouldn never change a diaper because that's 'women's work'. The boss, who won't let a father take paternity leave because it's not the man's place to take care of a small child. When everyone thinks it's not the father's place to take care of a kid, they also think a father isn't CAPABLE of taking care of a kid like a 'mother' can, so the court defaults care to the person in the relationship they see as 'most capable' of taking care of them, not because they are more capable, but because society says that a mother is. https://media1.tenor.com/images/2a332eaa8fe32b11d3f17059e828c5d2/tenor.gif?itemid=5327146

[–]Gliderh2 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Let me put it this way my best friend's Dad growing up paid child support for 2 children then under the table paid her more so that my best friend could live with him.

Orginally when they divorced they ingnored his preup, and gave both kids to her by default even though she was a drug addict in and out of rehab (he did cheat on her if that matters, whitch she did too)

Because he knew she was a drug addict who game drugs to the kids constantly and would sleep with the eldest son when he turned 15.

The oldest is super messed up and trying to get the law involved to do something would make the yougest go back to her and him in jail. Then when he got to stop paying child support for the oldest she complained to the judge and the judge almost doubled the CS even though he harldy getting any hours at his job because of the recession.

[–]MyNameIsChrisHansen8 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]flipsideking 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Well if you're willing to pay $50k+ to have that fight in court. All she has to do is be difficult on the other end. You can be right, but you'll have to fight and pay to prove it. Either way you lose.

It cost me $70k for one kid. Met a single mom with a just turned 1 year old. The child's dad took off, disappeared to another city with another woman and had more kids. I started raising the kid and the mom and I got married. Father got wind and took us to court for access. Our thought was sure, it sucks, but of he wants to be a part of his child's life then he has every right to it, but she doesn't know him so this has to be done right. What SHOULD have been open and shut to get an access order and child support sorted out turned into him lying to the judges, not submitting the proper paperwork, having his lawyers drop him for being unreasonable as a client, etc etc etc. We even had a judge stop the proceedings in the middle of it because he just couldn't communicate effectively with the guy (who wasn't even willing to show up and was allowed to call into court over speakerphone!). All of this after several years in court racked up 70k in legal debt for him to say to me that he's just not interested anymore and if I agree to pay his legal bills then he would let me adopt. Obvious no brainer of course I'd adopt, it was even on the table before! Best money I've ever spent but im still financially recovering from it. Oh and the mom turned out to be not so great either, but I've got my daughter and she is the best thing ever.

[–]MyNameIsChrisHansen8 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]flipsideking 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Thank you, and again, while it sucked, it's been worth every dollar. It just should have cost me 5k tops to get the paperwork sorted and stand in front of a judge for a couple hours. Instead, because the other party went out of their way to be difficult (since their are no / barely any repercussions), the costs skyrocketed and i really had no choice but to go through the ordeal and pay.

All the documentation in the world, an expensive lawyer and discovery provided by her therapist added up to us having shared custody. Our daughter spends just over half of her time with me. He probably did, this broke ass system tends to favor the mothers.

[–]ares7 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It favors those who can pay to fight for custody. You can definitely bully the mother and financially drain her in a legal battle to get her to not put child support on you. Hire a mediator for the kids (legally split costs with the mother), then hire a private investigator to dig up dirt, and now you’ll easily have joint custody. With that you can split day care and child care costs. Two weeks on, two weeks off. None of that weekend bullshit. If she can’t support the kids on her own for two weeks fight for full custody or make her take weekends like the guys normally do. If you have the funds to fight, she potentially could owe you child support if you do things right.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You'd be surprised at how often the kids go to the mom and the dad who actually gives a shit gets screwed. Judges fall for that sad mom routine.

[–]jjcoola 17 points18 points19 points 5 years ago (20 children) | Copy Link

Its not as simple as asking for fathers unfortunately

[–]uniqueusername145567 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What you're thinking about is residence. The new normal (in Canada) is joint custody but primary residence could be to one parent or the other. There's a table amount for child support that depends on who the children reside with and what their needs are and the income of either parent to make sure both households are even.

Child support isn't a lot unless you have a lot of kids or make a lot of money. Parent A can have a very large disproportionate income to Parent B. Parent A can live a nice lifestyle and spend it on their house, car, etc. Parent B can spend that money on a small house and pinch every penny, but blow it on alcohol, drugs, etc. Unless the child isn't getting their needs met (is there food in their belly? Do they have a place to sleep? Do they have cloths on their back?), the courts won't do anything. Notice how I didn't ask about the quality of food? Or the size of their bedroom? Or if the cloths are ripped or too small?

My ex used to not give a shit about the cloths the kids had and they would come home with grass stains, holes in their cloths or permanent marker all over them. So I stopped sending them in their nice cloths. Nothing she could say.

[–]jeffislearning 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well because custody.

[–]BepsiLad 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Stories like this make me so sad. And there are so many of them like this. Women who abuse their children, yet still get loads of money from their ex to do whatever the hell they want with. Not saying women are always the villains, but the legal system always favours women, which creates huge problems when the women themselves are very often the problematic ones in the relationship.

Our Australian trial was completely corrupt. You could only use the card at businesses that were coincidentally Liberal party donors.

You couldn't use it in small independent supermarkets, which were the primary source of groceries for many - but sure Dan Murphy's (a bottle-o/alcohol shop) was fair game on the card.

It also cost 10k a year per card to manage - when the recipients of the welfare were only receiving 14k anyway. Take a guess on if the company put in charge had heavy ties to members of the government...

Actually I’m far from a conservative but was shocked to see all the “EBT Welcome” signs that started showing in all the local fast food places in my neighborhood (LA, CA) about a decade ago. Did a bit of research and was surprised to learn that the categorization firewall you mention was the result of a question or two about living/cooking arrangements. My ex-wife (shared custody, abandoned our daughter to me for most of her childhood) enjoyed many fast food meals even as I paid for the bulk of her housing expenses. Which happened to include a kitchen.

[–]ISOanexplanation 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

“Stopped reading” you say? Couldn’t make it through the brief paragraph I wrote about my personal experience of how EBT cards work to get fast food here in California? Then you go ad hominem, calling me a fool as if I’m not understanding your more educated and worldly belief that only a few EBT recipients even qualify for a Big Mac? You really are the best of reddit.

[–]ThatSquareChick -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

All states differ.

In my state you can’t use ebt at fast food unless you can prove you don’t have a place to actually cook food. Makes sense.

[–]zenthor101 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

First of all you're super aggressive. Secondly They're not lying, you can definitely use EBT at some fast food places, at least in California. They have signs that advertise it.

[–]macadeliccc 18 points19 points20 points 5 years ago (51 children) | Copy Link

EBT is incredibly easy to abuse

[–]SpecialSause 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I have to disagree. I used EBT for a couple of months when my wife and I both lost our jobs. We had EBT and it straight up won't pay for anything that's not approved. So if you have 20 items and 2 of those aren't approved, it will pay for the 18 approved items and the 2 non-approved items will still be there and be needed to be paid for.

[–][deleted] 22 points23 points24 points 5 years ago (45 children) | Copy Link

and yet the overwhelming majority of welfare recipients... don't.

Welfare and EBT are different things man.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 5 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

You're right. EBT is the card. The service is provided to the government by JP Morgan-Chase.

[–]macadeliccc 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

Correct. I suppose I should say welfare and food stamps are different things. I was on food stamps living in Florida and it takes 5 minutes to turn all the electronic funds into spendable cash.

All necessity aside, that is too easy to abuse.

[–]brain_on_drugs1 points 5 years ago* [recovered] (7 children) | Copy Link

It's really not. You know the govt can track how food stamps get used, right?

How do you think a SNAP card can deny you at the register for pet food but allow ground beef?

When they did studies in 2012 and 2016 the rate of fraud was something like 0.5% and 0.9% respectively.

Stop spreading nonsense.

[–]LGEND24 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

When I worked as a cashier I saw abuse at a way higher clip than that. Unless you don’t consider buying crab legs and prime rib as abuse.

[–]Chieron 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

How dare those impoverished people...

...occasionally treat themselves to something nice, likely foregoing another meal or two to do so? Wait, that can't be it.

[–]CAisonfire 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If someone on EBT wants to buy prime rib, I think that's their business. Maybe it's their birthday and that's their favorite meal. Or maybe they just wanted prime rib that week and that's how they spent their money. I don't think we should police how people eat just because they get government aid.

[–]MisterDonkey 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't. It's not like someone is gonna buy a bunch of prime rib and be given more ebt because they ran through a month's worth in a week. What they eat is their business.

I am not opposed to restrictions on food items, but for the sake of promoting healthier eating rather than to prevent some sort of perceived abuse that I don't agree is abuse. I am also not opposed to it for the sake of shutting up people who use the opinion that buying crab legs on food stamps is somehow abusing the system as an argument for cutting funding.

[–]macadeliccc -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I’m not spreading nonsense. All you have to do is buy coffee and then return it... as of 2017 that was all it took.

[–]mradamkidding 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Then someone was breaking the rules. Every state I've checked says you cannot return items for cash under any circumstances. I know in MN I witnessed a fight at a corner store over this issue, the worker wouldn't give cash back for a return.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Build a better mousetrap then.

[–]greg19735 -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

But most people don't abuse it. that's the point.

The amount of work and oversight to make the system less abusable would cost more than the savings.

[–]AwayStatistician 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You're right on the first part, not so much on the second part.

For my state, we spend a dollar in fraud prevention to save less than ten cents. I imagine it holds true for other states too. Reasoning below:

States are mandated to implement various anti-fraud processes to be compliant with regulations. Since there are only a couple companies that are actually viable, they charge premium. Every 5 years or so they "fight" for the contract and each state just have to continue wasting money fighting the fraud that does not exist. Most states just continue awarding the contract to the same company at higher prices than before just to avoid the system migration headache if they were to switch.

[–]sn4xchan -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

Are you stupid? EBT is welfare. So is unemployment, so is disability, so is cash aid, so is medicare.

Do you not know what welfare actually is?

[–]macadeliccc 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

I know what welfare is but clearly you can’t read.

[–]SuppliceVI -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Correct. But if we stop the people who do abuse it, there is now more money for people who need it in a broad sense.

I won't pretend Im knowledgeable on the exact methodology to get and maintain the requirements for EBT, but there are definitely things that could be implemented to help those who need those funds get more funds by cutting abusers.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Actual welfare fraud counts for pennies on the benjamin. It's a non-issue. Easier to address poverty and inequality as a whole than to chase down addicts and hustlers who still gotta eat. Get over it.

[–]SuppliceVI 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

So can ya provide sources or?

Also, why are you so vehemently against hunting down abusers, even if there is still net benefit? It's still inherently wrong and wasting otherwise useful money

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's a bigger waste of money to pursue it. Throwing good money after bad.

I don't do sources; I'm not paying or getting paid so blow me. Do your own homework.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Budgets are about more than just dollars and cents. The general public needs to have faith that the system is working. Otherwise, they'll want to dismantle it. See what's happening with police departments across the nation right now.

If people think their next door neighbor has cheated the system and won, then they will get mad. Same reason hardworking students get mad when somebody has cheated on an exam and has earned an A, while they earned an honest B.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

But that's stupid

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I didn't realize we had a fucking philosopher among us.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You still haven't, but you used to, too.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

That's because "abuse" is so narrowly defined that hardly anybody is considered an abuser. This goes for all forms of government safety nets, not just EBT.

Take my mom for example. She's in her mid 50s and hasn't worked in about a decade. She claims her back pain makes it impossible for her to hold any job, and she hurt her back once around 2009. But she doesn't have any significant back pain these days. She works out, walks her dogs daily, and her hobby is gardening.

Is this abuse? Not according to the government. As far as their records are concerned, she's a woman with back pain who can't hold a job.

When it comes to EBT, you should see the things people buy at grocery stores with these cards. From the New York Times: In the Shopping Cart of a Food Stamp Household: Lots of Soda.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Your anecdote is bad and you should feel bad. This isn't even worth my attention. Glad your mom's doing better, now kindly go fuck yourself.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

"This isn't even worth my attention"

[–]SEC_Agent1 points 5 years ago [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link

Sometimes I would buy crabcakes and filet mignon for my friends and they would buy me cartons of Marlboro Reds.

[–]SpecialSause 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That's illegal to trade snd if caught you will be banned from ever having that service again and you'll have to pay back anything you used.

[–]ThisOneTimeOnReadit 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]DrunkenHooker -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Its the money of the people that work and contribute to society. Of course the people doing the work and putting in the effort to keep the system running care about where their money goes. And yes it is the money of everyone paying taxes and contributing. Those that aren't face natural stigma due to the fact that they are freeloading on our hard work.

[–]False_Cow_4176 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

No it’s not. The money belongs to the people receiving it.

How bout you mind your business about what low income people do with the crumbs they receive and worry more about the people who are stealing billions from Americans.

Welfare barely covers the cost of living for people living in any major metropolitan area. It sure as hell isn't going to cover a 1 bedroom apartment assuming you didnt even need to eat. So what exactly is it you're eager to restrict people who already have extremely shitty lives from having?

[–]H_I_McDunnough 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The answer to your question is hope. We must restrict their hope. Because if they even get a hint that things will be okay, society has already lost.

[–]historythrownaway 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]DrunkenHooker 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Ya its welfare. Not party money. Its given to them cause they are incapable or unwilling to find find work and support themselves. They are useless children that we have to pay for until they grow the fuck up, make better choices and work harder.

Moving even a short distance with a small family and very basic furniture can run into thousands of dollars. "Just move" isn't viable advice for people who can't afford two loaves of bread.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Welfare is temporary though. You get 5 years for your entire life. There’s economic costs associated with breaking leases and moving, and there an opportunity cost in moving to low cost-of-living areas, which tend to have less jobs. Not to mention that low income people tend to rely on local family for childcare. I’m not sure it makes sense economically, for the taxpayer or for the economy generally, to have people relocate. I’m sure someone has run the numbers on this but I haven’t seen them and either have you.

I see a lot of comments like yours and tbh I think it might be missing the forest for the trees. They sound good in theory but it benefits all of us economically for people to maximize their earning potential. Bigger tax base, less long-term dependence, more consumer spending.

[–]git_varmit -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

I guess the obvious point would be you dont (or shouldn't) live in a major metropolitan area if you cant afford it. Live somewhere cheaper.

[–]Looppowered 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Major metro areas are where the jobs are.. why do you want people on welfare to have limited work opportunities? Do you want them on welfare forever ?

[–]git_varmit 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Plenty of jobs outside the city if you arent picky on the type of work (construction laborer for example). Some people area but precious about what they will do for money though.

And plenty of people who work in the city and commute from outside because they are fiscally responsible and dont want to waste all their money on rent. Living in the city has a huge cost of living (generally), why would someone on welfare expect to be able to live there, let alone have that lifestyle choice subsidised by tax payers?

[–]historythrownaway 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Ah because moving is cheap! How dare poor people want to live in cities.

And uh... who is it that is going to have those part time minimum wage jobs you need people to do so your coffee can stay cheap again, exactly?

[–]git_varmit -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Living in areas with rent you cant afford is more expensive than moving. And wanting to live somewhere and being able to afford to are different things. If you want to live inner city, have a job to afford it.

I have a fulltime job, still have an hour plus commute each way because i dont want to spend all my money on rent. Coffee isnt cheap, its expensive as fuck, its why i make my own.

There are also a lot of job opportunities outside of the city of youre not picky about work (and you arent an awful employee).

Why would someone on welfare expect to live in the area with the highest cost of living? Seems like terrible fiscal responsiblity on their behalf.

[–]historythrownaway 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And uh... who is it that is going to have those part time minimum wage jobs you need people to do so your coffee can stay cheap again, exactly?

I will never tire of the "I make stupid sacrifices, so therefore everyone else should to instead of changing the system"

[–]mradamkidding 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

How is a poor person supposed to get a dependable enough car to commute over an hour? The cycle of poverty is lost on you.

[–]git_varmit 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Lower rent means more to save which means more money for a car. You can get loans. You can use public transport, you can carpool, you can do a whole damn lot of things. Cities arent inaccessible once you are out of them. You can also look for work outside of the city or in a smaller town.

If they are impoverished because they are on welfare, well yeah itll always be thay way because people on welfare will always be considered in poverty (being that they are living off government handouts, which wpnt ever equal a working persons wage) But they can choose to lower their cost of living, thats within their own power to do.

There are two ways to get more expendable cash. Lower your outgoing costs, increase your incoming cash flow. If youre on welfare, then your option is to lower your outgoing costs. Rent is a great place to start.

The cycle of poverty can be broken, but no ones going to break it for you. You have to do that yourself.

Imagine the audacity of being given goverbment money but complaining its not enough to live in the city, like you have some inherent right to live in the most sought after place to live and its other people's responsibility to provide that to you.

[–]mradamkidding 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I typically hate the word privilege, but damn that is such a privileged way of thinking.

[–]git_varmit 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

How is it privilaged to think that? I dont live in a major metropolitan area because i cant afford it and i work full time. Why would other people, who can't afford it (and dont have a job), choose to live there? There are jobs outside the city they can look for, or you can move to a smaller town.

What makes them too good to live outside of a city? I think expecting taxpayers/other people to pay for your inner city accomodation is a far more privileged position to take.

[–]Neon_Camouflage 20 points21 points22 points 5 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

The thing I find annoying about this is, so what. People get upset because poor people might want to buy candy for valentines day or get food that isn't flour, eggs, and water. If they're irresponsible with it then they don't have any more food to last them, it's self defeating.

But everyone gets in a riot because apparently if you're poor you just have to suffer with the base minimums. You want some ice cream or to grab a $2 burger because you're tired of cooking? Too bad, shouldn't have been poor.

I get not wanting to let people abuse it and go all out, but if you're drawing the line at a bag of candy for valentines day then you're just trying to punish them for being poor, not stop abuse.

[–]Rex9 7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

On top of this, people seem to love to forget that it is FAR cheaper to feed children, keep their health good, and educate them than to have them end up in prison or needing government supervision for most of their lives.

And that when given no other option, crime will rise. Can't feed your kids because the 'rona killed your job and the GOP won't keep the stimulus going? Guess I'll have to rob the neighbor while they're at work.

It's tough when there is a huge obesity epidemic throughout poor communities and no one does anything about it because the sugar/fast food lobby has convinced everyone that eating healthy is expensive or difficult.

I cook about 1 hour a week preparing all of my food and it is at most half the cost of prepared food at the super market and even less than half the cost of fast food.

The only thing that eating healthy for a low cost takes is self discipline.

[–]jpritchard -4 points-3 points-2 points 5 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Why shouldn't it be unpleasant to live off others? As a society we have a limited number of ways to prevent behavior that's antisocial. We can shame, we can make it unpleasant, or we can make it a crime.

An easy way to tell if something is selfish is ask yourself "what if everyone did this?" Like, throwing your food wrapper on the ground likely isn't going to hurt anything. But if everyone did that, it would. Running your AC full blast all summer when you aren't home, driving a big gas guzzling truck, taking one rock from a national park, cheating on who's turn it is to go at a four way stop, sampling a grape at the supermarket. None of these things are going to do much harm by themselves, but that's only because most people don't do them. If everyone acted the same way it would cause much more significant negative effects. You're taking advantage of the fact that most people don't act that way. You're being selfish.

So, what would happen if everyone tried to live off everyone else? It doesn't work, does it? The system would collapse. Society only works because not everyone's willing to be a net-negative. Our options for encouraging that behavior are shame, unpleasantness, and laws.

[–]greg19735 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You lack empathy.

"why should poor people even get the idea of happiness?"

[–]Rs90 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

There's already people living pleasantly off of others. They're called wealthy. Not the poor.

[–]jpritchard -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If you're poor enough that everyone else has to support you, you should not be content. You should be made to try and achieve more. Society depends on the number of people living off others to be low compared to the number of people contributing. We couldn't sustain everyone living in trailer parks.

[–]thediecast 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What a miserable person you are. As someone that grew up on welfare a lot of these things were some of the small pleasures I had between being made fun of for not having clean clothes at school and verbal abuse from my drunk dad.

[–]HowObvious1 points 5 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

Why shouldn't it be unpleasant to live off others?

You aren't living off others, you are getting a return on the taxes you paid that were used at the time to support other people.

[–]jpritchard 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ooh, that's a very interesting question. "Were most people on welfare net-positives for society before they ended up on welfare?" I strongly suspect not. The bottom 50% of the country pay like... 2 or 3% of the income tax? For "getting a return on the taxes you paid" to be a thing you would have to have made good money before and now turn to EBT. I can't find any numbers on it, but I suspect the number of EBT recipients who used to make good money is dwarfed by people stuck in a perpetual cycle of poverty.

Or we could just allow someone to spend a couple of dollars on minor things that let people retain some sense of human dignity and normality. Preventing people from starving to death is an extremely low bar for human decency.

You, do, though. Remember saying this?

Why shouldn't it be unpleasant to live off others?

They can spend our money on making sure they don't starve to death while they find a job.

Why do you feel entitled to tell others how to spend their money? You know it's no longer your money once you give it to someone else, right? You just love telling other how they should live.

[–]turtlespace 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

As much as you people would love this to be true, repeatedly saying it doesn't make it any more so - this shit has been repeated since the 80s as an excuse to keep fucking over poor people and it doesn't hold up when you actually look at reality.

What you're saying is overwhelmingly contradicted by any of the data we actually have on this, depending on which welfare programs you're talking about the actual fraud rates are 1-5% - is that what you mean by "far greater"?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Great job throwing out alleged numbers that support your opinion - you're forgetting that you have no clue where I live so even if by some miracle the numbers you are referencing are close to accurate they are most likely still wrong. But thank you for your contributing comment 🙄

[–]turtlespace 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Where do you live that welfare is used fraudulently in much greater numbers than legitimately.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Nice backtrack with your comment - I never said anything about greater numbers...simply that poor people should get it but abusers ruin it for everyone. Welfare gets abused all the time...it may not be greater than those that deserve it but the fact is it happens, which you've recognized.

[–]turtlespace 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Turn off Fox Entertainment News. You have an intentionally distorted view of reality.

The biggest recipients of welfare are farmers. Fucking welfare queens, all of them.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 5 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link

That's also a terrible take. Farmers, depending on the volume of food they produce, get straight punked by the government, because if they worked their land as much as they can sustain, the economy would collapse. It's wack but it's not their fault. Grow your own food or stfu.

also let's not forget that the American farmer is practically extinct. Your food is produced on an industrial scale by a chemical weapons company.

[–]urafartmouth -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Ive wondered the same. Like why do low class women care so much about nails & hair? Because that's all they got and it brings them up a "level" from their perspective. Cigarettes are a non essential "luxury" item, I assume its like a flex on people poorer than them, "look at me I can afford Cigarettes". Consequently, kids probably grow up thinking its a status symbol.

I receive child support and I'm a dad. I don't need child support, I make over 6 figures a year, but the judge really, really, really, did not like my ex. I use it at the ATM, then use that cash to purchase medical cannabis. Purposely. Please don't take away my pettiness.

[–]ChummyChad1 points 5 years ago [recovered] (21 children) | Copy Link

You are a legend. What level of fuckery did your ex commit?? Doesn’t usually happen the judge sides with the guy even if the woman cheats

[–]l00pee1 points 5 years ago* [recovered] (8 children) | Copy Link

She went straight racist on the stand. BTW, the judge was a white female - totally predisposed to hating me. I wanted to send my daughter to a school that my daughter wanted to attend and the ex said she didn't like the school because of the "blacks and chollos". The judge paused, asked if she wanted to clarify, and the ex said "yeah, blacks and chollos are poor and dangerous and I don't want my daughter attending that school."

I'd been paying 1000$ a month for 13 yrs and the judge didn't even deliberate, said she found her "speculative and offensive" gave me full custody.

The ex complained that she couldn't afford child support with her part time job, judge said "it looks like you need a full time job". Truly was a glorious day, and my daughter and I had a perma-grin for like a week.

[–]iamrusty1321 5 points6 points7 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Knowing the amount of guys I know who’ve been royally fucked over by their ex-wives, this is very refreshing. At least some of these judges are calling out a succubus when they see it. Good on you man getting your daughter back! Keep on toking!

[–]DrBoby -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

It's refreshing but I don't like Judges judging life of people on a few sentences and their own feeling at the moment.

We should be judged by computers.

[–]iamrusty1321 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

To be honest, if you can’t keep a respective, composed demeanor in front of a judge of high authority with your daughter’s livelihood in balance, your life should absolutely be judged as a reflection of that instant.

[–]DrBoby -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]Bane-o-foolishness 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]DrBoby 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I've been interacting with humans for many years, you really don't want to be judged by a human.

I also program, I don't see the difficulty in that. You'd still need a human to verify inputs, like "X earn 3000 per month" or "X is an alcoholic", then computers can judge more fairly. Program needs to be tested of course.

[–]kilijan 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

On the one hand a very satisfying story to read. On the other this is what it takes for a judge to side with the man. All she had to do was keep her racist mouth shut on the stand and things could have been very different.

[–]Hoodratshit1212 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

W h a t lol That’s hypocritical as fuck lol it’s only ok when a dude does it huh? You do know that if you get child support it’s because your kids live with you full time and you have primary custody, so why is it ok that this guy doesn’t spend child support on his kids?

[–]Sunscorch 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

He does spend it on his kids.

Using the Child Support card to pay for the cannabis frees up $1000 a month to spend on the kids from his paycheck.

[–]camyers1310 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

But this is exactly what this entire thread is predicated on. Mothers who spend their support money on themselves instead of the kids. It has always been a hot-button issue for father's for decades.

But this guy is doing the same thing and we applaud him for it?

Honestly, I have no qualms with the guy for spending it on weed. It sounds like he makes enough money and takes care of his children.

But it feels grubby and super hypocritical to bitch about support being allocated elsewhere but in the same breath, congratulations are in order for Dad here.

[–]Sunscorch 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I know. The whole thread is stupid.

It's based on the assumption that where the card money specifically is spent determines whether or not the kids are looked after. Which it obviously doesn't.

[–]camyers1310 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Agreed bro. Super hypocritical.

And in the SAME post where the conversation is bitching about it, we congratulate Dad here for doing the same thing.

Its a very weird double standard and its kinda funny how this thread is failing to see it.

Honestly, I don't care about what this Dad is doing. The double standard is what irks me.

[–]camyers1310 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah it has become nothing but women hating in general.

[–]Series_of_Accidents 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's seriously not true. It's extremely variable by region. In New England, men actually get custody more often than women (when 50/50 isn't granted, which is the most common outcome from court-decided custody). The idea that women are granted custody at higher rates is rooted in the fact that more women have custody of their children. However... the vast majority of custody decisions are made outside of court. When contested, most judges tend to agree (as does the research), that children fare best when given equal access to both parents (i.e. 50/50).

For example, my ex had zero difficulty getting full custody of his daughter. His ex-wife wasn't a bad person, but she couldn't provide for their daughter financially or emotionally. So he was granted full custody and she gets their daughter a few weeks each summer. She's not a druggie, a criminal, or a fucked up person. Still, he won full custody.

[–]camyers1310 -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I mean, I am proud of the father here for obtaining full custody. But, isn't his exact situation what the entire club here is bitching about?

Dad's who spend too much money on child support when the mother doesn't need the money and/or spends it on herself? And here he is spending the money on weed? (Don't get me wrong, I'm not mad at the guy)

One of the top comments is how this guy pays all this money while his wife drives a nice car. And how fucked up it is that he has to do that.

But here we congratulate the OP for essentially doing the same thing? Its confusing how we can bitch about it happening to us fathers, but high five another when a dad is reaming the mom for money each month.

Idk, I am a single father and I have full custody. I am waiting for the mother to start working again before I file for child support. But, I NEED it. All of my costs have double since taking full custody, and I make just enough money to get by and give my son a decent life. Having some extra money each month would go a long way for making my son more comfortable.

I guess what I am really highlighting is not the act itself of spending support money on weed, but rather the double standard that is being applied to this particular poster's comment.

[–]ChummyChad1 points 5 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

I don’t see your point. If the courts are overwhelmingly and unfairly biased against men even in scenarios where the man is cheated on or has caused no harm to the child and is asking for 50/50 custody - it’s kind of awesome seeing some fairness served where the mother is a massive racist and can’t make competent decisions for her child and have to cough up some money

[–]Communist99 -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

...what? that’s the same logic as saying “i’m sick of all these women getting raped all the time. I’m glad to see them raping a man for a change! he was a racist after all, he deserved it!”

how is it fair? child support is supposed to be a part of the income coming from one parent to pay for the well being of a child, and you’re celebrating the fact that this guy got it and admits to using it to buy weed

just because a problem exists that disproportionately effects one group doesn’t mean you should celebrate when the roles are reversed

[–]imanapplelady 6 points7 points8 points 5 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

It will never happen. Child support is for household costs, food, clothes etc. No you shouldn't be allowed to get your hair done with it unless its back support. Its not like a parent can say "support wasn't paid so I cant cover football camp." No they pay it and maybe get the support later. From a parent who receives no support and my husband has custody and she's in arrears 48k. If we ever get that money I will spend it however I please

[–]Fluffysugarlumps 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

[–]imanapplelady 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And I know lots of men in jail for being less than a grand behind. Try again, pal. I help with a father's rights group in our state. Men are jailed every single day over tiny amounts. I, however am a woman who fought the system with my husband and have been raising his 4 boys for 5 years. One is 22 now so not at home. Then we have men like my own father who fight for custody out of spite and because they don't want to pay that 300 a month in support.

[–]sirpaulthegreat 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Agreed. Not the way it pans out though.

Also, there should be a cap. For instance, if my wife and I split she would have a clear title home, car, and 250k + I would have to pay about 7k net per month and she works and make 50k a year.

Kids don’t cost 7k a mont especially when there is no shelter cost etc. Literally food, clothes, and some minor activities.

[–]sarakroiter 7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I know my dad, who didn’t work and also didn’t have majority custody of us, was paid child support by my mum, who works full time and had majority custody. He then used the money to buy the latest Apple products while all three kids had to sleep in one room so I’m on board with this

[–]Hoodratshit1212 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah, that’s unusual but it’s possible. It’s even possible for both parents to pay child support. The former happens when the non-custodial parent applies for child support with the court. It might have been the case that the custodial parent pays the non custodial parent simply by choice, though.

[–]sarakroiter 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]thisplacesucks_ 7 points8 points9 points 5 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

As a man that pays child support. The money isn't for the child. Its to pay back the mother what she spent on the child. Its not everyone's fault you live in a fucked up state.

[–]shizkc 8 points9 points10 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I used to get "child support" every 6 months or so. Not a high amount, like a couple hundred. I didn't make much so whenever that happened I got a sitter and went out. I told him not to bother anymore since I make more, but he's gotta help with dental cause that shit is pricy and she's going to need braces, at least on the top.

He found out one time about how I went out and flipped. Didn't matter that I explained i was paying insurance out of every check, food, childcare, shoes, sports(having an active kid kinda sucks sometimes, gymnastics is like 40 a month!), school lunch is $2/day, she runs through a pair of shoes every 6 months and since I was bullied for always wearing off brand I won't buy her off brand, she wanted a cat, etc. Etc.

I'm glad I make enough to not bother with it anymore, but every time I see a meme like this, I wonder if the men actually pay child support or know what goes into supporting a child. It's not cheap. I used to be on food stamps I know how embarrassing paying with that kind of card can be, why would you want to do that shame to the mother of your child trying to buy shoes or some shit?

[–]thisplacesucks_ 4 points5 points6 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm on your side. What I post in child support was even explained by the mediator what it was. And I pray 50% of anything medical. And if she needs more I give her more. She's talking care of my child and deserves whatever she feels she needs. My son is taking care of and has any and everything he wants.

[–]shizkc 2 points3 points4 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I was reinforcing what you were saying. Good on you. My kid's dad isn't the greatest, but I'm glad we can be adults and get along. I would rather he be around so my kid never feels abandoned, even if it isn't often. Ya gotta be around someone for 18 years. Longer for marriages, babies, etc. Why hate them? Why be petty? Relationships fail, why teach your kid toxic behaviors by resent ing the other parent? I always hated the way my parents talked about each other, I will never be that.

[–]nvincent 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Most of the people here don't have children lol.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Its supposed to be for the child. As in, if you and the other parent were together, both of your incomes go towards the child.

Thats why child support goes up and down with the payer's income. Or is supposed to.

If you were simply paying the mother back for what they spent, then if she was poor and paid very little you'd get by pretty easily, but if she was 4ich and gave your child a lavish life, that you couldn't afford, you'd be in jail for being unable to pay.

[–]thisplacesucks_ -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Umm no. Child support is based off the main child carers income. If you pay child support that means the other parent has primary custody. Gtfoh with that. I post child support and have a damn good lawyer. So best bet is go for 50/50 custody if you don't want to pay.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Thats not how it works in Kentucky then, or any other state neighboring it.

Because if that was the case, they'd have one parent pay more than they even bring in. You literally can't have the father, who only makes $2,000 per month, pay $1622 a month in child support. He wouldn't have any left over to have a place to live, or food or a car, so he can work and continue to make money to pay the child support he owes.

So I know for a fact thats how it is in my state of Kentucky. If its like how you say in your state, well, good luck.

[–]thisplacesucks_ -1 points0 points1 point 5 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It's more complex than what I said but I'll break it down like this. If my ex wife makes 16/ hr. And say I make minimum wage. Then they take how much it takes to raise a child on a single year then they break it down into a formula. I know im lucky and most states don't follow that but it's what child support was started for and had inflated from there.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Let's agree to disagree. Because Kentucky does it like I stated and your location apparently does it different. I dont see how they can base the amount paid off the primary care holders income. Literally every child support post on Reddit talks about the payments being based off the payers income. Thats where we get people paying ten thousand dollars a month. Because if Dad is an investor and makes millions, the courts want the child to have the same lifestyle as if the parents never split up. So Dad has to pay more. Regardless of what Mom makes.

[–]Vengrim 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is at the end of a fairly long comment chain but I still feel compelled to say a couple things...

In Ohio, there is a formula. You can go to their website and it'll break down exactly how the child support is calculated. It varies based on both parents income and the amount of time spent with each parent. Which one is paying for healthcare, etc.

Now, this next part seems less well known. The child support amount is not mandatory. I know of many ppl that have different agreements in place in their divorce decree and if both parents agree then child support can be whatever. HOWEVER, the moment welfare or any other state assistance gets involved, the state will automatically push for the maximum amount allowed by law so as to offset whatever assistance they are paying.

[–]wadekinde 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Child support where I am from is a set amount per child based on the household income before the divorce. Kind of like the tax charts on the 1040.

The income at the time of divorce of the custodial parent vs the non custodial parent is then used to determine how much of that set amount each parent is responsible for.

Example: The noncustodial parent earns 100k and the custodial parent earns 25k. The chart says the support amount should be $1,000/mo. The noncustodial parent would be responsible for $750.00 of the child support.

A lot of talk about child support looks over the fact that BOTH parents are financially responsible for the child.

And if it were paid on time it would go to their needs. But stepmama has been handling that for years. Her little $50 a month shes supposed to pay per child isn't even enough to cover school lunches. Let alone the rest of the things they need monthly. I dropped $200 on cross country fees last week. That's one child's fees and gear. She chooses to not work and the original order was high because the judge said they would adjust it when she got a job. That took 3 years. Even if she paid $800 a month it would barely touch 1/2 of what is spent on raising her children. Phones, car insurance, and wifi would almost eat all of it. If your child's other parent isn't caring for your child, by all means, be mad and ask a judge for an itemized statement. If they have a home, clothing and food, the rest is none of your business.

Yeah, but when guys are paying $10K/month for child support, it makes me smile to know that she can only spend it at Kroger.

[–]Crystalvalen 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Who in the world pays $10k per month in child support? That’s almost twice the mean household income in the US. The number of people who make this much to begin with is fairly small, let alone those who would be told by a court to pay this as a percentage of income in child support. Your figure seems a little exaggerated or out of touch, honestly.

[–]Bane-o-foolishness -2 points-1 points0 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If your point is that most people don't pay this much, I'll concede that is true. The cases I'm talking about are the ones like Brittany Spears and other wealthy folks that pay that much per month. The truth of it is that when there is big money involved, the courts use child support to in place of alimony. It doesn't cost that much to take care of a child - I've raised several and I know this to be true.

[–]Hoodratshit1212 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

No one is paying 10k a month are you dumb? The average child support payment is only 17% of your monthly income on average. You all aren’t millionaires, you don’t know a bunch of divorced millionaires, so 17% of an average income is nothing. Get over yourselves. No woman is living off of your poor ass. The average child support payment is like 400 bucks a month and it depends on both parents incomes. No woman with children is living lavishly off of 400 bucks and that child costs twice as much. You’re doing the bare minimum.

[–]Bane-o-foolishness 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You're ignoring my premise that the idea of limiting the places it can be spent so that its not wasted on things that are not in the interests of the children the money is supposed to be spent on. That in and of itself is a prima facie case for handling child support in the same manner as EBT. Check your math while you're at it, if 17% is the average child support rate and the the average US income is $60K then that comes to $850/month, a bit more than $400.

[–]safely_beyond_redemp 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's all fun and games until your ex gets addicted to meth and you are the one paying for her habit at the expense of your kids.

[–]SecretIdentity012361 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The only people saying this is stupid are the women who are currently sitting in some bar with a guy they barely know on their thousand dollar cell phones that was funded by their kids father that was supposed to go towards some new clothes and school supplies..

God I hope this turns out to be true. Because it really needs to be.

[–]SecretIdentity012361 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

So lemme get this straight..To all the people who are hating on this, you're telling us you're perfectly ok with your childs mother spending half of your paycheck you just sent to her on everything else BUT your child? Are you f'kin stupid?...Unless, of course, the ones bitching about it are the same women who are currently spending their child support on everything else but their child? Are you scared you're gonna have to actually buy your child new clothes? Buy your child a bed to replace the one you broke humpin' some dude on it you met at the bar last month? Are you sad you're not gonna be able to get your hair and nails done every week? Are you scared you're gonna have to sell that Benz you're driving around?....

Whether this is true or not, it's the greatest idea since sliced bread. I've been a first hand witness to this kind of bullshit. I've watched a mother buy herself a new wardrobe as her child sits in the cart in tattered clothes. I've secretly bought and paid for new shoes, socks, and other things for a child that isn't even mine because their mother is a selfish, unreliable, bitch. I've endured toxic friendships for the sake of one or more children. I'd pick up other people's children after school because their mother was at home drunk or still sleeping. And I did those things while their father is half a continent away working his absolute ass into the ground to give their mother that money that she rarely, if ever, ends up spending on his kid.

Of course a lot of my time is spent documenting such things in order to help the father gain full custody of his children when he finally comes home. Nothing better than witnessing the face of a POS mother sink to the floor when the judge tells her they're giving full custody to the father. And then watching them kick and scream as they're being detained for going berserk.

Literally doesn’t matter. People sell and trade food stamps regularly, and those have way more restrictions than this ‘child support card’ ever could.

[–]SecretIdentity012361 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

How exactly do people sell and trade food stamps?

[–]ImportantApe8008 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Similar to gift cards.

For example: If they have $100 in food stamps, they’ll sell it for $50. They get cash, the person buying basically doubles their money. The person selling them takes the other person shopping and pays for the food with their food stamp card.

I’ve heard from friends who either bought or sold in that transaction. It’s normally friend to friend, closed circles and local.

[–]billpecota 1 point2 points3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Downvoting be damned, but this post is bullshit. I am a male, and have 2 boys, well they aren't kids anymore, the youngest is 21. I never gotten any real child support at all. There is some back owed but she doesn't work. At the time tho, back in the day she got a tax refund and it came my way. I didn't spend that money directly on them. Seeing how I paid her share outta my pocket, all that is is reimbursement for the past. She even complained to child support and told her that he doesn't have to spend any of it on them. I spent more than my fair share of income on them, and decided to either save it or spend it on whatever. Let's say it takes $1500 bucks for all expenses for them in a month, i paid it all my self. Then keys say I get $ 750 at the end of the month in support. All that is is reimbursement for paying twice as much. I can spend it whatever the hell I want to. Thats just an example dollar. Just trying to give an example. I know everyone here is probably tired of all the passes they get, but I wholeheartedly DISAGREE with this statement

[–]Hoodratshit1212 0 points1 point2 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[+]UltraCynar -7 points-6 points-5 points 5 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Pro tip to Americans. Treating your poor like criminals with these judgement cards(this is fake but people want it to be real here for some reason) makes it harder for them to improve their quality of life and obtain employment. People on assistance have better outcomes when treated with respect and trust by just allowing them to have the cash without strings. This in turn saves money as well by removing costs for these judgemental programs which can go into skills development instead.

Also, it's fake.

[–]FancyMyChurchPants -5 points-4 points-3 points 5 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
