I think it’s a bit of a backlash. Women learn as young girls how important their looks are, we still have men here who think women will find them sexually attractive despite their appearance.

I think media and society overestimate the importance of women’s looks. Sure, guys look at the hottest women but most have a pretty wide range of looks they can find attractive. Society and media underestimate the importance of mens looks, (not here of course, the black pillars go overboard) women no longer have to marry the most secure guy and are increasingly free to choose men based on attraction

Unreasonable standards are unreasonable. They are never healthy. But in general I do think women probably worry a bit too much and most men don’t worry enough, so there is a bit of evening out going on right now.

It’s women who are valued heavily by their looks in society, hence women spend billions every year on plastic surgery, make up, and skincare by a huge margin.

Usually when women criticize female beauty standards, ^ that is what they are getting it. Nothing wrong with women scrutinizing these normalized beauty standards and norms imo.

It’s not like women are saying “we want to be as ugly and fat as we want with no consequences!!”. Women are usually critiqing legitimate things like how dangerous cosmetic surgeries are or how some companies require women to always have a full face of make up, etc

Somewhat agree. There are biological and cultural elements at play here. Women have always cared less about male appearance relative to other factors than men do about women's appearance. But this culture worships Eros and youthful beauty in all people. So while women have not closed the gap, it is pushing women to care more about male beauty than ever before.

As for there being a double standard, yes. It is emerging. Not consciously, really. But women are naturally pushing for their female imperative. So greater female leverage in the dating market combined with the current culture are naturally pushing the beauty standards one way. They are pushing many things that way. It isn't that women are being cruel, this is just how a free market works.

Women have more to lose in heterosexual pairings (though that greater loss is much less than ever before), and men just want women more. Women are more selective. They are more willing to go without sex. Etc., If you do not rig the market, that leverage imbalance is naturally going to manifest in many ways that feel 'unfair' to men. But in a free market, a fair deal is not always an equal deal.

Physically, beauty standards for men are timeless. If you’ve got a great physique, women will find you attractive. Similarly for women. ‘The Hour Glass’ is almost universally attractive.

Subsequent to that factor, are facets such as grooming, confidence, social skills etc.. Whilst influential, physique says a lot, before a person even opens their mouth.

My friend recently went abroad, the place she went is a common destination for cosmetic surgery tourism. She said the plane back was filled with women and gay men with plasters on their faces. If you visit a lesbian space you will notice traditional beauty standards are out the window. Beauty standards are to satisfy the male gaze. No women are not pushing beauty standards on men. Sorry, what a reach.

Everyone is beautiful, and nobody should get shamed for not being XYZ or whatever, however that doesn't mean that I need to be dating any of them. There is just no need to tell people that you don't find them attractive.

Naturally, both men and women try to get rid of their own beauty standards over other people's. Women have a lot more to push against, though, if they choose to.

I think the difference in beauty standards is that women's perception of male body standards are usually genetic whilst women's are visual

You can't make any woman look good with enough foundation and eyeliner but you can't make a man taller

This is a canard. It's a bait-and-switch.

(a) There's truth to the fact that there exists a movement advocating for increased representation of women with different body types in media.

(b) There's also truth to the fact that individual women have personal preferences regarding the physical features of the men with whom they date and have relationships.

Claiming that a woman who advocates for (a) must therefore adopt a certain mindset in their personal dating preferences (b) is nonsensical.

To some degree, yes. But it goes both ways. Men will be like “elbows too pointy” then throw a fit when a woman decides they’re too short. Also, men tend to treat women they deem unattractive poorly. Looks affects every facet of a woman’s life, and a woman’s body is picked apart a lot more than a man’s. Women just don’t want to date/fuck men they find unattractive. And some care much more or less about height than others.

100% agree. Being a tall man in 2022 is comically easy. My best friend since elementary school is like a real life Chad.

6’3 ish, tan (his dad is Mexican), dozens of tattoos, funny, charismatic, deep voice etc. We graduated high school in 2015 and I think he’s slept with 30+ women and been in a relationship with around 10 since then.

Funny thing is, no one will ever find him on tinder or bumble because he doesn’t need it at all. One time I lost him at a nightclub when we were trying to leave and he finally met me on the sidewalk and said “sorry this girl just grabbed me and shoved her tongue down my throat.”

He can land ANY girl at any given time. He’d break up with a girl and find a new one within a week. He’s dated four different girls named Alyssa for fucks sake. That’s twice as many girls that I’ve dated in my life.

And me and him are practically the same person. People would joke that we’re brothers because of how similar we are. Same hobbies, sense of humor, both equally athletic, same voice etc. Except he’s 6’3 and I’m like 5’7. I never even went to prom because my date’s friend told her to call it off because she’d be taller than me in heels.

Height is unquestionably the number one beauty trait amongst males. It has been for a while and it will never change. Women will never experience the feeling of having a beauty standard that cannot be changed in any way. They can say “well what about ugly girls?” Ugly is subjective. I think Adam Driver and Jennifer Lawrence look like the bottom of my foot. But a lot of other people think they’re 10/10 drop dead gorgeous human beings. Thus, a tinder bio saying “no ugly dudes” would mean absolutely nothing. Height isn’t like that because height is an objective, measurable trait. Nothing comes close to it

Each side is going to say that they have it harder with beauty standards, especially in this group , I definitely think that there's a lot of women who will try and push against beauty standards for them either because they can't hack it or they want what they are is to be seen as the standard of beauty, that's the real intention behind the "body positivity" movement, men can generally take the criticism better regardless

The idea that beauty standards are somehow societal and hence can be changed is obviously detached form reality.

The main contention by the author is that women are actively trying to destroy the beauty standards that men and the media put on them, while simultaneously pushing ridiculous beauty standards on men. Do you agree or disagree?

I agree that we live in a gynocentric society that applies blatant double standards, losing its ways to benefit females. I chuckle at the futile efforts to change this very aspect, especially at the fact that it is based on men-hating pseudo-science that is soo deep in Feminism (and no, it's not just today, proto-Feminists were lying, e.g. about "women weren't allowed to write poems, else we'd have female Shakespeares" more than a century ago) that a peer reviewed feminist journal accepts a chapter from Hitler's "Mein Kampf" when Jews are replaced with men.

I feel like most of the yelling about beauty standards isn't directed at Men so much. (A bit obviously), but it's mostly at companies and businesses who don't sell certain sizes or portray a variety of female body types as beautiful while also taking their money left right and center. It's a lot about yelling at hollywood for never having roles for women over the age of 30. It's not really like, telling men what to find attractive and to the degree that it is, I don't think men really disagree typically, so it's mostly telling them to be more kind and accurate with their language. (I feel like most men agree to some extent most women are attractive. They just may not be the fantasy best option, ya know?)

I compare that with men yelling about beauty standards and it rarely seems to be directed at Target or Gilette or Trojan. It's almost always at women and it's almost always about stuff we wouldn't agree to typically since I don't think typically women think most men are attractive and especially don't think say overweight or noodle-armed men are. So in a sense, I feel like the issue is that they're misdirecting the rage at women and then what they do direct doesn't feel like legitimately useful criticism that we can use. It mostly amounts to, "Stop liking what you like".
