Found out where this one stat came from: http://www.unicef.org/infobycountry/usa_35986.html

Turns out it came from one person; the leader of UNICEF. Where did she get this information? I can't track that shit down. Here's what she said:

We know that women do about 66 per cent of the work in the world, they produce 50 per cent of the food but earn 5 percent of income and own 1 percent of property

So her source is ... everyone? This is just a self-evident statistic? That's not how statistics work, sillypants.

I googled more specifically "Ann Veneman 66%" and got this article: http://www.ifeminists.net/introduction/editorials/2006/1011roberts.html . surprisingly found on a feminist website. Little did I know those sites harboured intellectual honesty and real sceptical investigation from time to time.

Anyway, the author, Carey, claims to have called UNICEF to get the source on this 66% statistic, they said they'd get back to him, they never did. He then found the stat on a UN web page devoted the the Millenium Development Goals, which sourced the statistic to Womenkind Worldwide (WoKi WoWi, lol). After contacting Woki Wowi they said that "the facts given in this quote are from the UN." (facepalm)

He beautifully summarizes his journey, like this:

Let's see. Group A relies on Group B, Group B bounces us over to Group C, and Group C sends us back to Group A. In my neck of the woods, that's called recycling the trash. Ms. Veneman, may we consider your statement a candidate for the Phony Statistics Hall of Fame?

So, It's bullshit! Yaay! I can sleep well tonight knowing there's one less reason to need feminism. Whew.

I, of course could have found this out before asking "Where the hell did this statistic come from?". The title was rhetorical; I wanted to give an example of feminists pulling random numbers out of their asses.

The super rich own more than everyone else combined. The super rich are mainly rich from inheritance - that means dividing by gender is sort of silly - but it also means women come out ahead as they live longer and spend more.

As to doing most the work, that is an almost unmeasurable quantity. But men in general are more likely to die at work, and die younger overall (with no discovered biological reason except stress), which hardly supports the pampered man hypothesis.

It's scary that when I do a Google search there are numerous sites passing that same statistic off as truth, with no real source.

I noticed the same thing about a month ago when I read somewhere on 2XC that "Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women between the ages of 15 and 44 in the United States, more than car accidents, muggings, and rapes combined."

It's absurdly false information, but a quick google search and there are hundreds of sites passing it off as truth. I love the Internet, but this is one of its major flaws. The amount of bad information that gets spread around so quickly. It also doesn't help that anytime someone questions these statistics they're labelled anti-women.

It's basically made up or obfuscatory as it doesn't define labor or property(just land or water too? Material possessions, companies, resource assets? Which ones count?). If property is just land, then governments own the vast majority of the land, and neither men nor women own most of the property.

But let's for a second presume it's true. It still wouldn't matter because neither all labor nor all property is equally valuable.

So despite how bullshit of a statistic it is, even if it was true it would be completely irrelevant.
