I would speak with whoever runs these things at your school. Principals, councilors, etc. Not only are they promoting the idea that men can't be victims, but they're also implying that women can't be perpetrators.

Do research, bring information, and discuss this with people in charge.

There was once an impromptu women-only assembly at my workplace, then another one a couple of weeks later. The third time, they made it for everybody. Turns out someone kept doing really disgusting things inside one of the women's restrooms and they were warning everyone they'd fire the culprit once they were caught.

I had a friend in college, he got way too drunk passed out and a 6 foot 220 pound woman decided she was going to get some dick and at that time went into the room he was in and tried to rape him. He woke up and couldn't do anything but be pinned down by this woman, the only way that it stopped was that we MADE her friends go in there and drag her off of him. If we had been too drunk or passed out as well he would have been the victim of a rape. True story.

They are probably doing the women a disservice. I have trained jujutsu, karate, ninjutsu and taekwondo. It takes around 6 months just to learn how to move the feet properly. Teaching knee to the groin and fingers in the eyes are just creating a false sense of security.

They did this at my school a few years ago, told the girls how to avoid rape etc. - except they split the boys off into another room.

We had a lecture on why rape is wrong, why we shouldn't do it, and what exactly constitutes rape or sexual assault.

It was utterly humiliating and patronising. If they had done the same thing with white and black people there would be an uproar.

I remember we had the same thing at our primary school. That was about 8 or 9 years ago now, but all the girls in year 8 (the last year of primary school) were taught self defence, but none of the boys were.

On the bright side, in my martial arts class at university, when we learned self defense, we did so as a group. When we learned to defend against larger opponents, even the largest learned. I never got to learning how to defend against armed individuals, but that is because I never got high enough and the thought was that until you were high enough up, you only learned enough to run away.

I can't speak for all martial arts, but those that are not influenced by pop-culture seem to be completely non-sexist.

I have two points. First a joke/funny story. When my school had a club faire kinda thing going on one of the tables was for women self defense course. I as a man i had some difficulty trying to sign up. They stopped me and asked why i wanted the course. I responded with "because i am a sexy man and i need this course to teach me how to defend my body from women. They explained to me that is not what they course is(as if i really didn't understand). It was funny and public and i got a bunch of laughs because i was speaking loudly the whole time.

Second you should of went to the class and sat right in front. If they tried to kick you out then you make the point that you as a person can be sexually assaulted and raped and why do they believe you do not deserved to learn techniques to defend yourself from those crimes. Continue the line of reasoning from there that if they don't care about your well being as well as female victims of the same crime they are being sexist and ignoring an entire gender. Force them to acknowledged this or kick you out.

I think they should have an assembly for all males later. While I would like to think an assembly for ALL students should happen, I think it may be better to separate them into gender. The girls can probably feel more comfortable to speak freely when males, who they try to impress, are not present.

But like I said, hopefully they do one for all males also.

Frankly I see nothing wrong with this. Inviting men to this would make all the women in the room uncomfortable given the topic. And it's ALWAYS a good thing for a person to be aware of danger and able to defend themselves.

Now if there were an assembly on a similiar topic (though undoubtedly handled differently) for men, that would be better.

Self defense was part of the high school gym curriculum for girls at my high school. Not 100% sure, but I don't think their classes ever had them going into the weight room, while ours had us in there twice a week. So there was discrimination on both sides, in a sense. No one really complained about it from what I remember, though.

They did something similar at my old school (In Scotland). At first we were all taken down to the gym hall and given a lecture about self defence then shown a few moves and split up into pairs to practice. It was to be a regular (and free, probably paid for by the school) thing for those that wanted to do it. After that first lesson we were told that it was to now be a girls only thing due to high interest and lack of places. We were told that the girls were prioritised because they needed it more (Or something to that effect). Seemed a bit bullshit at the time (Couldn't quite put my finger on exactly why yet).

Looking back I might agree with them. All the boys in my school knew at least the basics of how to fight and got into bad enough scuffles as it was without adding tae kwon do into the mix... :P

By comparison most of the girls didn't have a clue how to defend themselves (As shown during the lecture/sparring session we all went to) and so probably benefitted most from the training.

You know, I realize that this is MR, and I am here as a guy who generally agrees with what I see here. However, almost all of my friends are female, and at 30, I'm sad to say that only a handful have not experienced some sort of sexual abuse or rape at some point in their lives. The odds that a woman will be at risk for harassment or abuse is far higher than it is for men, and even so, males are far more likely to try to fight back and defend themselves, while women are more likely to feel that their only choice is to submit and suffer.

So I see your point, but I also strongly believe that all women should know how to defend themselves, or at least carry mace should they need it. Yes, it's entirely possible that a male will be harassed or targeted, but a female runs a much higher risk of it happening, and at greater frequency, than most dudes out there, and is far less likely to have the physical strength to fight someone off if she needs to. So I've gotta stand behind this, even if it is gender-biased.

I'm at my last year at school, i go to a boys only school. This topic always annoys me. So i wanted to start a self defence class after school for the other boys who were interested. I have a black belt in a martial art, and so did my friends who wanted to help run this. Unfortunately we didn't generate enough interest for it and its nearly end of the schooling year here so i wouldn't be able to run it for so long.
