My ex was the same... No idea how to do taxes, when to get oil changed, mow the yard, unclog a toilet, or fix a leaky faucet. It was ironic that she spent years telling me how independent women are as capable as men, and after two years she's still calling me asking how to do shit.

Same with mine. She's expecting me to walk away from the house and let her make the payments while I rent elsewhere. This amazing house is getting sold and all the other consequences of divorce are going to happen too. I wasn't making a killing but my earnings afforded her many luxuries of time and hobbies. She was an excellent mother. She's going to have to get a real job, do a lot lore driving, skip out on a lot of the things she liked to do and live on less, and in another house. She didn't think this through. And yet, this is what she has decided to do. No infidelity, no fighting or abuse or alcoholism. She fell out of love with me. And I'm not going out like that so she's about to find out just how good she had it. Or maybe not. Either way, I'm doing what's best for me and the kids. Peace B

Holy shit! Same story here. I was served and figured that I’ll get the cheapest lawyer I can and settle asap I offered my stbx to settle more than 5 times! All offers very generous. In the meantime her pit I’ll lawyer started slamming me with motion after motion because he knew I had a weak lawyer. Even the court appointed psychologist said that we are both wasting money on lawyers in court. I said I’m ready to go to a mediator tomorrow morning. Her response was I prefer my lawyer handle this. I spoke to her parents who were bankrolling her entire escapade since she never worked a day in her life and told them to settle so they can save money. Their response was that they’ll do what she wants which was continue with the lawyers. Once I realized that she is a total moron as we’re her parents I spent money and hired a real junk years dog of a lawyer. Her lawyer quit the moment my lawyer took the case and then she had to start from scratch but she’d already wasted 20k or more of her parents money. She doesnt care since she never saw a bill in her life. Her parents got her a new lawyer and now the case is continuing. I’m not happy that I have to spend the money but she’s a moron so I have no choice. Hire the most evil POS lawyer you can find and tear her a new one good luck!!

My ex was the same. Except she claimed she knew everything, and that anything I told her was a lie.

She got half of my 401k and nothing else. Say it was $50k. She expected a check for $50k handed to her. I tried to explain what a QDRO is and what “pre tax dollars are.” Nope. She demanded I give her a check for $50k. I said “if you don’t believe me? Google it! Google pre-tax dollars.” List went on and on.

Finally I did the QRDO and she got her own 401k with $50k in it. What did she do? She pulled it all out and spent it! Then the next tax year, our decree said I got to claim both kids as dependents. So she had to pay both the IRS and the AZ dept of revenue the taxes on those pre-tax dollars. I laughed so hard….

I'll toss one more "ex has no ideas how life works" out...

About 8 years after my divorce, when I was picking my kids up for visitation, and while waiting outside my ex came out to talk to me about something (I forget what). During that exchange she blurted out that "I had cheated her out of $7,000 a month in lifetime alimony" (her exact words) "that I owed her", because you see I had moved away to a different state AFTER the divorce, and that state had more favorable alimony laws than where we divorced (TX - 3 years spousal support at the time). I had moved away because I lost my job in the 2008 Recession (there were no jobs in my field in the state at the time - lots of my peers out of work) and I needed a job because still had to pay her $5,000 a month in combined support.

My response to her was "You realize that you re-married 5 years ago, less than a month after my final Alimony payment...?"

Her response to my response? "That doesn't matter!! You cheated me and I should be getting it!"

facepalm time ensued... To this day she still thinks she was right.

As an FYI depending on where you live generally these days courts follow a formula. They're not required to do it, but it's a guideline based on shared income and years you were together. Deviation from it requires specific circumstances.

I feel a lot of empathy for you. Divorce sucks.

Sounds like my case.

I'm convinced my ex's ignorance drastically increased the amount of time and money it took to get a divorce. It should've been a simple mediation. Instead, it was an $80K divorce.

While married, we used to argue over whose way of doing things was better/wiser (e.g. I was a saver who wanted to live within our means; she was a spender and wanted to live life to the fullest).

Post-divorce, I now have the house, a steady job, and a loving relationship with a like-minded professional. Meanwhile, she's struggling to find a decent man in his 50s, has burned through all of her retirement savings, has applied for disability (was rejected), and now drives for Uber (because she "likes the flexible hours").

I don't wish any evil upon her or anyone, but after all those years of hearing how I was the problem, I'd be lying if I said I didn't find it just a little bit validating. But she'd never admit she was wrong. Not even now.

Anyway, best of luck to her in making her own decisions from now on.

Listen unless you've got 4-5 kids that your taking care of 100% your paying alimony unless their's something else not mentioned... Divorce means 50/50 split the only time the higher earner doesn't pay alimony is if they make close to the same. Or it is offset by costs of taking care of kids.

Pay $200/month for 2 years and walk away...

I have mediation with my wife in a few days and im dreading it. Says she wants to keep the cost down and be amicable but has been stubborn and completely impossible to deal with most of our marriage so i have my doubts. We've been married about 6 years in NJ, we have 2 kids, the house is premarital and only in my name on deed and mortgage but i make 50k more than her per year and the ridiculous market value of houses has my house with about 170k in equity which is complete nonsense. Im scared how this will go down due to our difference in earnings. It will suck but the only thing that matters in the end to me is my kids and that will be 50/50 split for sure.
