Couple things here. The article links incel culture to a rise in domestic violence. Those men by very definition are not incels. Also, “Incel” mass shootings aren’t a thing in the UK. I have no idea what sort of violence caused by “incels” that they’re referring to.

The word incel has lost all meaning. People seem to think that misogynistic men are actual incels and vice versa, any man who can’t get laid must be a misogynist. There are plenty of men on forever alone who are involuntary celibate but aren’t hateful. Even we’re branded as incels for caring about equal rights regardless of our actual sexual status.

Edit: found this comment interesting on the UK subreddit

Want to stop the movement from growing? Fix the economy.

The reason why these communities have grown is because we've ruined the economy. A man's worth is judged by their wallet and social status and we've created a social underclass of men who cannot get good jobs, cannot make friends, cannot afford to move out of their parents' home by their mid-twenties and have nobody to turn to because people laugh at and ridicule them, and because we've basically gutted out all mental healthcare programmes. This is of course a social death sentence and has basically created adult virgins.

So close. They recognised the pressure placed on men through traditional gender roles but instead getting rid of them, they suggest only fixing the economy.

[–]bottleblank 108 points109 points110 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Those men by very definition are not incels.

Indeed. If the problem they're trying to solve is domestic violence, targeting men who aren't and never have been in relationships seems like trying to target obesity by banning lettuce.

Nonsensical, no logic whatsoever, and completely insane.

[–]Akihirohowlett 35 points36 points37 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"Hm, we have a problem with men abusing their SOs. We should go after the men who have difficulty getting an SO, that'll surely solve the problem!"

[–]AltGameAccount 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

seems like trying to target obesity by banning lettuce

I wouldn't exclude it from corporations making junk food tipping off some dieticians first and then FDA to do something like that. I mean, the obesity epidemic has been "fought" for a few decades yet it's only getting worse.

[–]bottleblank 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, unfortunately politics is far from being free of corruption, whether that be corporate interests or social movement pressure groups.

[–]Sininenn 38 points39 points40 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You know what is interesting?

If you're an incel, and can't get laid you are called a misogynist.

If, on the contrary, you are a promiscuous man who likes to hook up with women, you are called a pick up artist and also a misogynist...

Everything is misogyny today, the word is losing it's meaning.

[–]GroundbreakingAnt322 14 points15 points16 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The social context that misogyny has appropriated is a part of 2nd wave feminism. Misandry not so much. It's still one woman's views on men rather than hating on all men.

[–]SwoleFeminist 120 points121 points122 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It's just about scapegoating and demonizing the lowest status group in society. The people who are actually socially underprivileged.

[–]Knowledge40001 points 3 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

I think people started blaming incels after the Elliot Rodger controversy.

[–]killcat 21 points22 points23 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well yes, because otherwise they'd have to look at WHY men are doing these things, just saying "INCEL" and leaving it at that is much easier.

[–]Banake 29 points30 points31 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

How the hell they link incels with domestic abuse? Even if you buy that their spaces are misogynystic and this enhance hostility towards women, there is no reason to think someone with a girlfriend would enter said space, or that men who commit dv are frequenting said spaces. They are just scraping the barrel, aren't they?

[–][deleted] 59 points60 points61 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Plenty of men who hate women get laid all the time.Certain qualities are attributed to all incels so that women aren't shown in bad light for rejecting them. All of them are potential mass shooters and misogynist hence they aren't getting laid as if every guy who is getting sex worships lol and incels get hate because they don't get sex not because of any other quality. If a guy is misogynist but ye gets laid he will still get respect

[–]UniversityEastern542 17 points18 points19 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Plenty of men who hate women get laid all the time.

All sorts of dudes have been on a date with a chick, thought "I hate this bitch," and had sex with her anyways.

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points23 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Most male feminists don't exist. They are only pretending In order to get laid

[–]WhereProgressIsMade 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The ironic part is it doesn't even work very well.

[–]NibblyPig 15 points16 points17 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I'd go one step further and say that if we need more mental health services and have a mental health crisis, it's already too late.

It's like complaining we don't have enough trauma centres for bear attacks when the real problem is we keep letting people get mauled by bears in the first place.

If you want to fix incel culture try shaming and punishing people financially instead of rewarding them that have children they can't look after, that hook up with tinder date after tinder date and devastate the dating economy. You can ask a young guy to be a nice well behaved man who works hard, gets a good job, and finds a woman to treat well and have a good life and start a family with, but how is he supposed to do that if the women are just browsing through chads on the tinder menu looking for fuck of the week? If they don't want that until it's too late? It perpetuates the idea that this is not important for women and they can sort it out later, after their 'career', whenever (and if ever) that happens. Then they end up in their late 30s with a dog and no family or as a single parent with children they struggle to look after, or at least if they succeed in looking after them, they can't really do much careerwise which is bad for the economy.

And of course if you speak out like this you're the one labelled the loser for not being able to get a girl. But it's not a personal thing, people are speaking to the population at large. Who cares if I am married, have kids, or single and alone? It's about the wider population.

[–]bottleblank 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

If they don't want that until it's too late?

I'm going to preface this by saying I don't like using the "Chads" rhetoric, because I think it's overly simplistic and too easy to fall into a game of stereotypes and blaming. However...

This line in particular is crucial to understanding how some of these men become who they are.

They have poor social experiences during their formative years, often being overlooked for those who are more charismatic, more confident, more gregarious, who may have had much better conditions in which to develop early social skills.

This begins a cycle, as those with the positive experience are encouraged to seek more, they are confident that pushing boundaries and getting what they want is going to work (because it has in the past), they find themselves in a positive feedback loop. They receive social success, which makes them more confident, which gets them more social success, which makes them more confident, and so forth. They have no reason to believe that their behaviours are bad as they are consistently rewarded for their efforts.

Meanwhile, the boy who is often bullied and socially isolated in school, who does not receive positive social feedback, he becomes anxious, the stakes for all his social interactions raise because every attempt is an attempt to get an increasingly distant human experience he needs but cannot find. He, too, enters a feedback loop, but a negative one. He is scared that his approaches will be unwelcome, he places a high value on positive experiences because, to him, they are exceptionally rare. He acts nervously, he acts desperately, he has had no opportunity to practice and improve his social skills to make himself more palatable to others. So, with his poor experience, his social anxiety, and his low skill level, he is off-putting to others. Which causes him to experience yet more failure.

This continues throughout teenagehood (an especially relevant period of social and sexual development, particularly in places where teenage experimentation is common and culturally expected) and into adulthood, eventually leading him to be expected to live a productive and wholesome life with no social support structure, no experience, no confidence, no self-esteem, and an ever-widening gap between his own life and those of his peers.

He understands and is reminded constantly that he lacks the tools to engage with society, he is taunted daily by images of people who have successful jobs and easily-obtained and happy relationships, in every form of media you could possibly consume. Which is problematic, if you require said media as a distraction from your dire social circumstances, because it constantly feeds the despair and loneliness. But, no matter how distressed and traumatised he gets, now it's "too late", because he can't apply for a job with a huge gap in his work history, he can't believe a woman would ever accept his pitiful lack of experience or knowledge of how to conduct a relationship, and he can't even form a friend group because others already have established friend groups of their own making, and are busy forming their own family units.

People take for granted very simple and very common experiences, such as kissing. Some of these men are so far removed from any kind of romantic success that they brand themselves specific types of "virgin". Not simply "has not had sex", but hand-holdless and kissless. This is how little they've been able, or indeed even "allowed", to connect with their sexuality. They feel unqualified to even kiss. These men, perhaps teenagers, but not uncommonly in their 20s or even 30s, do not know even how to kiss like an adult. Which is an incredibly galling thing to know about yourself when that's one of the early stages of intimacy, one which could very easily put a woman off. This is why they get trapped in voids of inexperience. They feel unable to bridge the chasm between what they are and what they believe (not without basis) that society expects them to be. But they were never given the opportunity to develop those skills and understandings. Yet that very same society is more than happy to insult and abuse them for the precise lack of experience it put upon those men in the first place, by considering them undesirable and unworthy of support.

You would probably become mentally troubled if you felt so excluded from human connection too, especially at the hands of those who purposefully ostracised you and levelled your self-esteem to smouldering rubble.

So, ultimately, even if these men are eventually successful in forming their own lives, with employment, and a place to live, even if eventually they could be wanted by older women who are looking to settle down with a less adventurous, more reliable partner who does not have social promiscuity in mind, they cannot. Because they feel they could never measure up to such a woman, a woman who has such a wealth of experience and a taste for confident pleasure that she couldn't even begin to accept a man so barren of capability as a partner.

[–]NibblyPig 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I agree with you and you have written that very well.

There was an article recently in The Times about how basically kids learn what's right and wrong by trying things, that includes jumping off a wall, letting someone punch you in the face, and all kinds of other stupid kid behaviour, which also includes awkward fumbling and perhaps trying to hug a girl or similar. But the repercussions of that now, unwanted touching or teasing etc. are so great they basically act like what you described as colossal negative feedback. They mentioned the police being involved when a kid tried to hug another girl. Can you imagine the emotional damage it would do to someone's ability to form relationships if the police were called because he didn't know how to express that he liked a girl and thought he'd try giving her a hug!

The tragedy is not just that people will give up because they're kissless virgins so they'll just stick to their basement depression nest, but that some of them will try to make a relationship work, they might force themself on a girl or grope them or whatever, not because they're evil bastards, but because they just don't know how to act and when pumped up on hormones and as you put it, placing high value on positive experiences.

They, of course, get the blame for this.

[–]bottleblank 11 points12 points13 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well, quite.

Beyond even that, they observe successful men seemingly acting in the same or much more intrusive ways.

I recently noted in a comment that, if I should visit a nightclub, I tend to find myself behaving in a reserved fashion, as I do not wish to violate any interpersonal boundaries; I do not wish to insert myself into somebody else's evening, or intrude upon their social group, or unintentionally harass a woman.

However, in that very same nightclub I could readily observe both men and women visibly breaking such boundaries, actively putting themselves upon each other, physically, and that it often results in mutual indulgence in intimate behaviours, perhaps even leaving the club together and experiencing a sexual encounter.

I cannot do that, whether I wish to or not, because I understand that I do not have the confidence, experience, or communication skills to do so without potentially causing distress. I would rather back away from a woman who is dancing too provocatively near me than accidentally cause unwanted touch or misinterpret the situation.

Those other men, however, have no such concerns. They blatantly ignore those rules and are frequently rewarded handsomely for doing so.

I'm not suggesting even for a moment that I expect to be given a free pass to wantonly interfere with women who are not receptive to it, but this very real observation only fuels the perception of discrimination against men who, were they to perform the exact same actions, would be criticised, warned, shamed, and punished.

In short, "if these behaviours are so universally objectionable, misogynistic, and harmful, why are there so many instances of willing reciprocation as a result of those violations?"

[–]Traditional_Job2467 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Despite factually they are just hiding the truth of such cases due to the rise of violence against women from men that came from backward countries.

[–]Knowledge40001 points 3 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

Aren't most men well off and functioning in society? The social underclass is a minority of men.

[–]D_Luffy_32 16 points17 points18 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Depends I guess in what you consider social underclass. I feel like most people would consider the ones who are homeless and more likely to be charged unfairly by the law as being the social underclass. Which in this case would be men.

[+]GoelandAnonyme -13 points-12 points-11 points 3 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link

So close. They recognised the pressure placed on men through traditional gender roles but instead getting rid of them, they suggest only fixing the economy.

How would you get rid of traditional gender roles?

Edit: Why is this being downvoted? I'm just asking a question because I'm genuinely interested.

[–]killcat 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Quotas. But only for women in high powered/payed jobs.

[–]GoelandAnonyme -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Could you elaborate? Do you mean making it so women have as much economic power as men so there isn't a financial imbalance that reinforces the bread-provider role?

[–]killcat 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I mean quotas but only in government/management/high salary positions, no one is going to be making quotas for women in bricklaying, there are already plenty of jobs that are mainly done by women that pay well, the "wage gap" is bullshit and based on a gross average.

[–]Paid-Not-Payed-Bot -3 points-2 points-1 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

in high powered/paid jobs.

FTFY.

Although payed exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:

  • Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. The deck is yet to be payed.

  • Payed out when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. The rope is payed out! You can pull now.

Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.

Also, “Incel” mass shootings aren’t a thing in the UK. I have no idea what sort of violence caused by “incels” that they’re referring to.

Jake Davidson, for example.

One out of 30 million or so men in the UK, I stand by what I said.

[–]bottleblank 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

That incident was deemed not to have been motivated by incel ideology.

Edit:

In his posts online, Davison was critical not only of the blackpill but of incels generally and in some cases, wrote that he did not identify as an incel. Ultimately, after investigating, U.K. Counter Terrorism Policing concluded that the attack was not a terrorist attack and was not motivated to further an ideological cause. preventviolence.ca

The article links incel culture to a rise in domestic violence. Those men by very definition are not incels.

Incel culture can still influence them even if they are not incels themselves. Its more to do with the manosphere which exposes incel ideas with the rest.

We don't do Menslib kind of things on here.

Just look at one comment in one of the videos you shared, it has 1.6k likes.

It’s crazy because as a black woman, it took me a very long time to even begin to empathize with the white male struggle, because it just seems as though they have every advantage in the world. But whats I’ve come to realize is that if you have all these advantages and fail that failure hits 10 times harder. It also may seem a bit radical, but if you think about it, there’s a thin line between the manosphere and the Aryan brotherhood. They both pick up people who they feel like society has thrown to the side of the road and with that it creates an even stronger bond to the organization because they feel like nobody has believed in them except their desired group

[–]Traditional_Job2467 21 points22 points23 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

[–]GoelandAnonyme -2 points-1 points0 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Ok, so we see the problem on two sides? Its not a competition, we should work on both.

[–]bottleblank 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Perhaps somebody should've told The Guardian that when, a short time after the Plymouth incident, they published an op-ed lamenting the poor quality of life that "femcels" experience; the loneliness, the wanting, the feeling of disconnection, the hopelessness. An article which, despite describing the very same experience that (or even one much less impactful than) many troubled men are experiencing, took special effort to preface the female experience with a reminder that men are sexist, violent, animalistic criminals.

Said incident was deemed not to be motivated by incel ideology, but that didn't stop the media and politicians from jumping on the bandwagon and lambasting these men as dangerous woman-haters and potential killers.

Yes, we should "work on both", but we're not. We're empathising with and supporting women who struggle, painting them as victims, as human beings who deserve more, who aren't at fault, and we're doing the precise opposite to men in the very same situation, based on flawed generalisations and a drastic empathy gap.

[–]hotpotato138 11 points12 points13 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]GoelandAnonyme 47 points48 points49 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

That's actually a pretty good point. Curious what it would look like to consult incels and other lonely men? Like a public forum? An AMA on Reddit?

[–]bottleblank 42 points43 points44 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

The "Incel" podcast produced by Naama Kates would be a good start. Actual interviews with actual incels who (mostly) articulately and with good humour openly discuss the struggles, complications, and mental health issues they have.

Or perhaps a word with William Costello, an evolutionary psychologist who, despite not quite nailing it every time, at least has a largely sympathetic understanding of the mechanisms behind these sentiments, collectives, and social phenomena.

Or me, even. Not to blow my own trumpet, I'm nothing even close to special, I'm sure many other men would be just as good - just somebody with first-hand experience, not some distorted third-hand assumptions and a handful of news articles about tragedies.

But I am a non-violent, non-woman-hating man with a history of autism, bullying/abuse, loneliness, anxiety, and depression. I very much have first hand experience of the kinds of thought processes and mental traumas which relate to the way these men feel. However, I'm now an older man (well, relatively), not drowning in hormones any more (but I very much remember how that was for me as an ostracised teenager), I'm generally able to describe the experience without flying off the handle or threatening/blaming huge swathes of people. I don't call myself an incel, I don't belong to any groups who do, but I've had enough contact with the subject to know that many of my experiences are shared, regardless of what we call it.

I've been trying to explain it to certain Reddit subs for some time, with... less than stellar success, and entirely too much pushback. But the more I do, the more I refine the point of the issue. I don't communicate with slurs and accusations, I relay the specific experiences from an internal perspective, trying to show people what it's like to live that kind of life, and why it sends men mad trying to deal with it. Because if we want to solve any of this, that's incredibly important to know.

[–]GoelandAnonyme 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I would be interested to hear what you want to share. Also, if you can see ways of trying to resolve these issues with policies, I would be interested.

[–]bottleblank 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Well, honestly I don't know how I would make any appreciable contribution, in the face of such overwhelming cultural negativity. I mean, people with far greater (academic, medical, political, media) credentials than I could hope to ever have don't even seem to be making significant inroads to influencing this hysteria for the better.

I've been trying for several years, "causally", to explain some of this to people on Reddit, primarily after the Plymouth incident where I saw so many news stories and discussion threads so utterly oblivious to the reality of most of the men who suffer in these ways . It's not much, but it's something I thought I could offer in defence of the many men who struggle but who haven't committed crimes because of it, and who are more likely to injure or permanently remove themselves from society, rather than anybody else.

My success rate in reaching people with heartfelt personal experiences and explanations of the social mechanisms which result in some of these behaviours has not been high. People are actively resistant to the idea that any of this begins with legitimate victimhood, with exclusion from society at the hands of others, and mental health issues that the individuals in question could not reasonably have avoided on their own.

I do suggest people listen to things like Naama Kates' podcast and William Costello's discussions about his work in researching this phenomenon, because they both show the human side of what's going on here, the psychological warzones these men grow up trying to live in, the events and dynamics which can twist a person's brain to be so aggressively reactive to the society they live in. I don't expect many do follow up on these suggestions, but as they say, you can lead a horse to water...

I did think, after commenting on this thread last night, that I might attempt to produce some sort of PowerPoint deck, to sort of "formalise" the things I write about, put them into some form that could be used to explain to those more officially-minded, rather than a nebulous cloud of casual Reddit threads which nobody with any say in any of this is ever going to read. It's a little nerdy and impersonal, and I'm not nearly as good at that sort of thing as, for example, The Tin Men's infographic images succinctly breaking down male experiences, but I thought perhaps it would be more appropriate for the kind of audience who need to understand this, those with a more structural involvement.

There's a lot to talk about. I just don't know how to go about doing so without putting myself at risk of being considered some kind of misogynistic saboteur of feminism or hateful enemy of progressive society. This very post is an example of how little they care about the reality and how hell bent they are on "doing something about it" (which may not necessarily involve doing anything productive, but may instead simply cause more damage and further suppress those who could help genuinely improve things). So I really don't know how likely any of the people who need to know are to actually pay any attention to the real voices. Which is concerning (and frustrating, as a man who is in this position precisely because nobody else listened either).

[–]shit-zen-giggles 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Your efforts are appreciated. I know how frustrating it can be to talk to the ignorant and I'm not even an incel.

[–]bottleblank 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Thanks. If nothing else I at least hope other men will see that there are people out there who understand. I'd prefer people who don't suffer to take it on board and to treat us better, but I'll take what I can get.

[–]Stinky_Fly 12 points13 points14 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's funny how almost all their partners would turn out to be women only.

[–]killcat 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Well why would they speak to the "violent potential offenders" as opposed to the "victims".

[–]bottleblank 39 points40 points41 points 3 years ago* (8 children) | Copy Link

Why wouldn't they? They're supposed to be trying to "solve" this problem. You look at the causes of the problem in order to prevent further occurrences and resolve the consequential effects of the existing ones.

Ask incels why they feel the way they do. Ask what can be done to help. Treat them like human beings.

Because that's the one thing many of them have in common: they don't feel like human beings. They feel left out of society, of normal human experiences, of human connection, of relationships, of friendships, they feel alien, they feel excluded, they feel ostracised, they feel demonised, they feel that they're being unfairly cast as terrorists and criminals. They feel inadequate, they often suffer from anxiety, depression, neurodiversity, bullying, abuse, many from broken homes with unhealthy or no role models. They often lack confidence and self-esteem. They lack purpose and any sense of value. Many are NEET or in bad jobs. Some of them have tried seeking help but get nowhere or, worse, have those requests thrown back in their faces, even by professional therapists, because nobody understands the problem.

Do you know who else suffers from inceldom? Incels. Male suicide rates are high, we know a large contributor to poor male mental health and suicide is loneliness. But we don't want to talk about that, do we? We'd rather treat them like dirt until they break and then blame everything on them, or wait for them to quietly die so their trauma can't leak out and affect everybody else's cosy lives.

[–]hotpotato138 16 points17 points18 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They don't give a shit about lonely men. They are fear mongering.

[–]killcat 9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I think people misunderstood, I was framing it in THEIR frame of reference, I can see why they SHOULD talk to "incels" but their world view says that incels are the offenders and have "no part in the conversation".

[–]bottleblank 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

But that's exactly why they should talk to incels.

If there's some kind of crime happening, even increasing in prevalence, why on earth wouldn't you try to establish - from the perspective of the perpetrators - why they do it? It's basic criminal psychology. Look at the person who's doing it. Look at their life circumstances, their history, their profile. Look at what might have caused them to feel the need to do it.

Just inventing theories based on things women say makes no sense. If they genuinely intended to solve "the incel problem", the very first thing to do would be to understand the men from those men's perspectives and see on a human level what might provoke a person to behave that way. Then, with that knowledge in mind, start making changes to society which reduce the frequency of those kinds of life circumstances happening, thereby drastically reducing the risk of a person ending up in that psychological state.

We're not talking about some petty argument here, where one woman refuses to listen to one man because she thinks she's right and that he doesn't deserve listening to. This is societal level psychology. Those responsible for responding to societal issues on a professional level should be held to a far higher standard than a meaningless argument of no consequence in which one or both people are behaving in an immature and dismissive way, where in the heat of the moment they don't want to be wrong. It's their job to get it right.

[–]killcat 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Because they "know" why, feminist theory tells them why, they aren't going to pollute that with actual evidence, it's why I regard the "woke" movement, which this is part of, as a religion without a god. What we are talking about here is dogmatic belief, they "know" the correct answer, any other position is "heresy".

[–]bottleblank 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I honestly have little choice but to agree with what you're saying, clearly if they did have any real care or interest then they would be taking a more reasoned approach.

But, alas, I am cursed with a moral lens which refuses to allow me to believe that everyone involved is that conspiratorially corrupt. I'm not really sure how I would retain any sense of correctness if I were to allow myself to believe that there's nobody out there with a real conscience.

[–]killcat 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Oh there are some that do, but just not the ones in power, again I can use religion as an analogy, the people running the show are the most "faithful" and dogmatic, with the "purest" viewpoint, untainted by actual evidence. And the most radical will always push for their view point to be the only one. Also remember that there are a lot of people involved who are absolutely convinced that men, specifically white men, are the cause of all "evil", so that's who they target, and they will twist EVERYTHING to that goal.

[–]bottleblank 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No doubt. As you say, very much like heads and upper echelons of religions, even in our own western history.

But I can't square that with the extreme dissonant claims that we're all pushing for a better future together, that any of this is about equality, or harmony, or acceptance, or inclusion. The only logical conclusion, in the face of evidence, is that you're right, that what they claim to want is not truly what they're trying to bring about. Or that they're all incredibly stupid, but I doubt that.

I'm simply not built like them. I don't understand being that manipulative, or callous, or power-hungry. All I want is a simple but happy life. It's all I've ever wanted. They have that, and so much more, yet twist and warp the rest of our lives in the ravenous pursuit for more.

Yet I'm the problem?

Yeah, that's how you make more men angry. Which might further your agenda in the short term, by having an enemy to blame that won't be defended, but in the long run that's a very dangerous thing to do.

[–]Stunt_Merchant 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is a fantastic post.

[–]critical_Bat 212 points213 points214 points 3 years ago* (42 children) | Copy Link

I was reading another post regarding this article and was going to post a question since that view was quite popular in the other post.

How does the term involuntarily celibate imply being owed sex?

I cant see it meaning anything other than the person is not abstaining from sex because they reject it.

[–]ExMuzzy 219 points220 points221 points 3 years ago (20 children) | Copy Link

They want to believe that men are angry simply due to being unsuccessful with women. It’s quite narcissistic if you ask me.

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 128 points129 points130 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

It's just another gaslighting tactic, which in addition to being narcissistic becomes self fulfilling, as it too elicits anger.

[–]Stinky_Fly 47 points48 points49 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I mean they keep creating laws like this and other laws to give women unjust powers by law and then say men are becoming "unlikable according to our needs" and then create more laws to tackle that. It's just a cycle with a bad end

[–]darthjory 29 points30 points31 points 3 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

A genocidal end, if you ask me. And plenty of tragedies throughout the 20th century bear that out.

[–]GroundbreakingAnt322 12 points13 points14 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The same thing i saw with dick sizes. I'm not sure where comparing dick sizes would be an issue unless in the context where women have said that having sex with a small dick is poor performance or not as pleasurable or shaming them for it.

[–]hotpotato138 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes.

[–]Knowledge40001 points 3 years ago [recovered] (12 children) | Copy Link

Being unsuccessful with women can be a factor tho. Men who get constantly rejected by women they are attracted to can trigger angry feelings.

[–]Trev6ft5 28 points29 points30 points 3 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

It's nothing to do with women constantly presenting themselves as obnoxious man hating narcissists who can and will use biased laws to destroy men?

Reject a woman who is publicly coming on strong and you'll see real anger

[–]ExMuzzy 22 points23 points24 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You are using the true definition of incel. The thing is, they lump people who participate in subreddits such as this one as incels regardless of their sexual status. The reality may be that some men here are annoyed over things such as rape legislations, family court bias etc., but to them they just think we hate women and are incels.

[–]hotpotato138 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Because we go against their agenda.

[–]Relevant-Ground101 35 points36 points37 points 3 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

But in saying this you would say that most men would naturally become angry, so are we saying most men are easy to anger?

And yes being rejected is a very easy thing to do.

[+]ayanyalikesmybones -13 points-12 points-11 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Everyone would become angry if they keep failing at something.

[–]Relevant-Ground101 23 points24 points25 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Eventually yes, but I belive societal standards for men made guys more equipped to handle it. I see women cry about a person who doesn't LIKE her, and I've asked some girls at my school, they had a 1:7 ratio of rejecting to being rejected.

[–]ayanyalikesmybones 7 points8 points9 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah i think women are more sensitive so that's why they cry over dumb things. But i think that for the case of those incels it's not ONLY that they get rejected there is probably some stuff next to that.

Like these guy on youtube, he was a really lonly guy all his life and was depressed and all and he decided to blame and hate women for his problems. Sooo it's not so much rejection that made him angry here but people still call him an incel.

[–]Stinky_Fly 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And what's the solution to the problem of loneliness to further isolate men with their laws. It's like China's solution to war where they say "keep listening to all our depends we'll never go to war with you."

[–]Knowledge40001 points 3 years ago [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link

You’re right, it doesn’t and yes, it just means involuntarily abstaining from sex. The reasons could be anything from disability, social anxiety or, personal circumstances

The original meaning has been twisted. Instead of referring to misogynists as misogynists they’ve just tacked on those to incel

Edit: Spelling (involuntary to involuntarily)

[–]what_i_reckon 62 points63 points64 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

It doesn’t, let’s face it we’ve all been incels at some point in time. Unless every time you’ve ever wanted sex you’ve got it. That’s not really the case for anyone.

Men get rejected all the time, we have ups and downs with women, dating and relationships. We’ve all had dry spells.

Yes there are some particularly lonely men out there. But I don’t think collectively they are a real danger to anyone.

I hate the way society views lonely men who are unsuccessful with women as dangerous.

[–]Stinky_Fly 40 points41 points42 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Saying like a women never gets angry and attacks a men, what if every time a women attacks a men and we start blaming that on feminism (that's not how things work)

[–]Halafax 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Saying like a women never gets angry and attacks a men

Feminists don't care if men get attacked by women. That's "punching up" and therefore fair game.

I wonder how many men can't get sex even though they're trying and men who could but see the juice isn't worth the squeeze.

I think the way society paints single men is very misleading

[–]throwawayincelacc 31 points32 points33 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

They want to paint single men as the root of all evil so they can continue their control and domination. If men are seen as broken, dangerous, and can be labelled as an extremist just for being single it will create more and more demand for women. It’s all a sick game they’re playing with men as the victims.

[–]exibitnumberone1 points 3 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

The actual meaning of Incel doesn’t imply being owed sex but what incels often say implies they think they’re owed sex.

[–]throwawayincelacc 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I know we cant reference the sub because it’s deleted, but I’d seen posts of theirs show up in other places and it was very much hating the game and their circumstances. There’s no handbook for men. And even if there are tips and tricks, some are just very ugly and don’t get any success. That’s more the gist of the posts. Maybe at some point they became more extremist but even in labelling them a hate group I’d never seen any posts, screenshots, or links to any threads that actively spoke about organizing any sort of hate crime. Meanwhile women do it all the time to deny any sort of discussion of men’s rights sadly.

[+]GoelandAnonyme -28 points-27 points-26 points 3 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

If you spend enough time looking into incel communities you find many incels who believe they are owed sex. Wheter is listening to Tate saying a man should just "take" what he wants or state mandated girlfriends. The term itself doesn't imply it, the community does. Kind of like the term "Religious Italian" doesn't have anything to do with catholicism according to definition per say, but a religious Italian is very most likely to be catholic because that community is very catholic. (Not hating on catholics, I'm one myself).

[–]New-Friendship-4089 8 points9 points10 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

(I wrote a lot, if you're interested read it as it provides a bit more nuance.)

You're like that guy who heard stories about a certain group of people after it has already passed through god knows how many mouths. As someone who used to frequent those spaces, I can tell you with absolute certainty that the idea that they feel like they're owed sex is simply ludicrous for so many reasons.

First of all one of the biggest ways to cope as an "incel" in those spaces was to give yourself some sort of special identity that will alleviate some of the strong negative emotions you have about yourself, and this identity most of the time happens to be the "intellectual" fella because the majority of those guys are either autistic and/or have severe social anxiety issues which mean that for a big chunk of their lives they've always been an outsider in every social situation they've ever been in.

The point I am trying to illustrate is that a dumb idea as they owe us sex is not something that can truly take hold in that space, crazy as this might sound to you because I'm sure your idea of what an actual incel is very, very different from an actual average incel.

There are of course other reasons such as the fact that feminism is very anti-free speech due to the fact how it labels people who have the slightest deviations from their pushed narrative as being these god awful humans, unsurprisingly the mob mentality is unhinged as ever and the majority of people don't really want to take the full brunt of an angry crowd who thinks they're doing the world some godly favor by making your life a living hell. Thus they find themselves in a weird limbo state in which they have some issues that need to be talked about and at the same time those issues are pretty sensitive and with the "Fuck nuance" mentality that most people have they can only talk about those things in anonymity after they've already accumulated a lot of resentment and alienation toward their communities.

That is the reason you hear the most misogynistic shit you've ever heard from those incels and most people mistake it as actual misogyny but it's not for one simple reason, the motive of the whole thing. People can say the same thing and mean absolutely completely different things, in the case I mentioned above people take what they said at face value and don't question it but the motive behind saying that misogynistic shit is not a deep desire to express how much you genuinely think women are inferior beings who should be property for everyone to do with them as they please, but it's simply knowing what the people you resent don't want to hear that and you customize your jokes to say the most perfect thing that would 100% get under their skin.

I feel like for some reason I still have not made my point perfectly clear, let me give you an example. It's like the difference between making jokes about short people with your friends because you genuinely find them to be absolutely hilarious and don't have the slightest shred of empathy toward the challenges they must face and making jokes just because you know that society finds that to be absolutely unacceptable and you want to rebel, because of the resentment we mentioned earlier and so the whole motive behind the joke is to simply attract negative attention. If you ask me it's just like a dying man's struggle to give himself some peace of mind at the thought of "at least I didn't take it laying down and retaliated", it's pitiful in its own way of course.

This is the stage where some "curious" someone comes along to these spaces without the slightest idea of who these people actually are and what they went through. They see people discussing the most unhinged shit like rape shit, owe sex, and so on... and goes with it which is of course understandable.

[–]GoelandAnonyme -2 points-1 points0 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I literally found an incel in who replied to my comments and started talking around women shouldn't be able to choose not to have sex with men without consequences.

[–]New-Friendship-4089 9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It doesn't prove anything man. To be frank one of the biggest factors as to why this whole topic is this big is that society in general or certain groups of people find it easier to jump the gun and extract the perfect conclusion about the topic so that they continue to rest in their own moral, inclusive, and perfect bubbles. If you think that the majority of young men are dangerous, disturbed, and hate women with a passion go for it.

[–]bottleblank 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I've found many women and feminists who are perfectly willing to throw baseless insults and accusations at troubled but inoffensive men.

We can all come up with anecdotes and "proofs" of some kind of trend. It doesn't make it true for all women/feminists or all incels, however.

Indulging in that surface-level dismissal and ignorance is exactly how this escalates.

[–]Traditional_Job2467 5 points6 points7 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

In the years prior she'd tweeted variations on "kill all men" and "all men must die".

She currently has 230k followers on iG and had 140k followers in Twitter.

That's a large amount of people who want to see views like that.

The difference is the media and the general public hate Tate and he's removed social media, while the person who says they want more men to die is given more publicity and interviews by the press.

Classic Moral Panic Trick, they're using the excuse of stopping Incels to crackdown on the entire anti-Feminist, MRA, MGTOW, Red-Pill Spheres. This is an example of runaway Progressive Totalitarianism, you're an incel Nazi if you don't tow their line and treat the narratives of the liberal elite as gospel truth.

No where in that article did I see where they had made a direct connection between growth in the incel movement and an increase in violence against women. They appear to be drawing an inference from changes in just two statistical data points one of which does NOT support their contention. The other, the comparison to the five year average, may be badly flawed because of its base. At least two of those five years would have been heavily influenced by Covid19. Neither of the quoted stats would support the conclusion they appear to have reached.

As men we are constantly berated for not vocally expressing our feelings but when some of us do, they want to muzzle us? It may be that simply "getting it off their chests" will relieve some of the frustration for a great many and actually prevent the violence the authorities supposedly fear.

I do think that the police should monitor such sites to guard against the extremists who will do more than just talk. However, that also implies that they should be monitoring the rabid feminist sites as well. Note to the authorities: Women MUST be held accountable to the same laws that are called upon to protect them.

Per their own statements, the incel movement has grown exponentially in a very short period of time. Where is the discussion of the cause of this and the steps they are planning to take to address it? Are they interested in a real solution or is this just an expression of their intent to ramp up the pressure on the disaffected?

Hey, I have a thought. Why don't they just legalize prostitution? The incel movement would evaporate overnight! Police resources would no longer be needed to prosecute a victimless crime! The ladies providing the service would earn an above-average income! The ladies who chose not to be service providers wouldn't have to suffer from nearly as much unwanted attention! The guys would have a certainty of outcome for their nights out! Public health could be better monitored! Governments could tax this activity! Win, win, win ...

[–]DavidCksss 12 points13 points14 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Hey, I have a thought. Why don't they just legalize prostitution? The incel movement would evaporate overnight!

Your tone suggests this is in jest, although I'm replying because some people do genuinely suggest this.

It won't work.

What these men lack is much more often human connection. Appreciation, purpose, affection, care, love, understanding, validation. Yes, they talk about sex a lot, but many of them are young and don't necessarily articulate themselves well, you have to read between the lines.

Many of them are also terrified of sexually experienced women, knowing that the experience gap is going to be embarrassing, anxiety-provoking, and potentially result in regret and self-hatred after the fact, because they know that they're essentially wearing gigantic neon signs saying "I don't know what to do with a woman" whenever they try to express themselves intimately.

They also may not want to "prove themselves right" in the same way, like Schrodinger's sexual experience: if they don't encounter it, there's no proof they're terrible at it. Actually experiencing that failure, that embarrassment, is likely to reinforce their deepening beliefs that they will forever be without love and intimacy, it's real live confirmation that they can't do it, that no woman is going to want to be the recipient of their clueless fumbles. Which they will inevitably experience, because they'll be far too nervous to enjoy it, or to "go with the flow".

They don't want to expose yet more weakness on top of already being considered losers for not having had sex yet, and potentially far deeper social issues than that. They've already had quite enough ridicule and they don't want to up the stakes to experience it even harder.

Related to which, there's often a need for bravado and saving face, so there's incentive to not sound "weak" or "feminine", instead to sound raw and masculine and like you just want to perform carnal acts, because that's a lot less sappy than "I want to just hold a woman on the sofa and talk". There's also influence from certain other discussion boards, where some of this community came from, where (whether you believe what you're saying or not) competing to be the most edgy and over the top arsehole is the culture.

But the salient point here is that "sex" is not necessarily "sex":

a) It's a catch-all term for intimacy

b) It doesn't require admitting vulnerability to word it that way

c) It's quicker to say than multiple paragraphs about feeling this or that and describing how much you just wish someone would love you for once just like "everybody else" seems to grow up just getting for free without struggling for scraps

d) They know they all know the deal, there's no need to exposit when they're all there for the same reason, they all know what they're missing, and it's really tiring to have to spill your guts in that much detail over and over again

The most common perpetrators of violence against women are spouses or intimate partners, who are, by definition, not incels.

Meanwhile incels choose to identify with the term. And we calls to action to be violent towards women.

Its completely different.

[–]Foxsayy 10 points11 points12 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Black people don't express hate towards their fellow man or woman though. And they do not choose the "black" label, its imposed on them.

The most racism I think I ever personally saw was when I was in an interracial relationship and my black GF got frequent messages from black men and black women calling her a race traitor and telling her to keep the bloodline pure.

Also, neither she nor anyone else in her family had an issue with being black, or being referred to as black, and frequently referred to themselves as black.

[–]UnconventionalXY 11 points12 points13 points 3 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Incel is a derogatory term: call black people by the N word and watch the anger spiral out of control.

The involuntarily celibate did not choose that state of being, it was imposed on them (ie involuntarily) and considering celibacy in men is largely as a result of not having sex with women, then not choosing to not have sex with women must derive from women choosing not to have sex with men.

Women choosing not to have sex with men results in a deprivation for those men and not unsurprisingly for women too who are deprived of a corresponding man to have a relationship with: it's not surprising men and women are unhappy because a social imbalance has been created through personal choice.

But don't women get a choice over who they have sex with? Of course, however choices don't exist in isolation, they have consequences and in this case societal consequences of disenfranchised and angry men and women that has huge import in societal stability. And the choices themselves? Women choosing not to have sex with men because of characteristics the man has no control over, such as height, is not sufficiently compelling in exchange for society itself to become unbalanced.

It's irrational to unbalance society just so women can choose not to have sex with men based on unjustifiable, unreasonable choices. The good of society outweighs unreasonable individual choice. None of us has the right to do whatever we want regardless of the consequences.

Women do not have the right to incite anger in men just so they can villify and suppress men as antisocial elements. This is the equivalent of a woman deliberately goading a man beyond his limit so he does something she can bring to the authorities as a criminal act for her advantage.

[+]Foxsayy -7 points-6 points-5 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

It's irrational to unbalance society just so women can choose not to have sex with men based on unjustifiable, unreasonable choices. The good of society outweighs unreasonable individual choice. None of us has the right to do whatever we want regardless of the consequences.

What's the argument you're making here? It sounds dangerously like compelling sexual activity.

[–]UnconventionalXY 4 points5 points6 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

My comments are largely about women choosing not to have relationships (ie sex) with men because of unreasonable shopping list characteristics, thus creating relationship absent men and women which destabilises society: that is, they are choosing selfish and unreasonable thresholds of selection and not considering the effect on society as a whole, or even themselves, when good enough would create a much better outcome for all.

It also relates to women villifying those men they don't choose for not living up to their standards and actually creating the incels by womens own choices, whom they complain so loudly about. Do they really expect men they have rejected for being too tall or whatever, disenfranchised from society and normal relationships, to not be angry?

I'm not talking about women choosing to say no to sex at certain times in the above context. For that it is a different matter of women choosing for their own benefit, but ignoring the impact on men and not even attempting to facilitate a win-win outcome by some other means that doesn't involve them accepting sex they don't want.

The overall argument is "It's not only about you: consider the impact of your choices on others, society in general and even indirectly yourself, and whether you absolutely have to have everything you want in the way you want it to be happy enough and allow others to be happy enough too".

It's a complex area to break apart into components that can be discussed separately instead of being conflated into one huge victimisation of women, when it is women who are contributing to it.

[–]Foxsayy -2 points-1 points0 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I agree that people shouldn't vilify people because they aren't attracted to them, and that it would probably be beneficial to have a body positivity movement for men as well to change attitudes in certain areas, but I'm not sure if I agree with what the rest is advocating, and I'm not sure what it would mean in practice.

[–]UnconventionalXY 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's difficult to consolidate what I am saying into a few words: I'm suggesting one option of women considering whether a small sacrifice in having more sex than they might want in a relationship and lowering their standards for a relationship might have dividends in more men and women being able to have a relationship, less anger and frustration and thus less acting out, the overall stability of society and the possibility women might actually gain more than they lose; and another option of recognising mens sex drive and its importance to them and not impeding mens surplus sexual expression via other avenues if a woman chooses not to have sex.

If women see sex with men not as a sacrifice, but an opportunity to nurture greater balance in society and indeed achieve more of what they want overall (relationships, resources, family), perhaps it will become a joy instead of a burden.

Don't get too far ahead of yourself in solving a perceived problem, versus understanding it first.

I see women holding out for unreasonable selection criteria (how is height at all relevant?) and thus depriving themselves and other men and women of potentially good enough relationships whilst upsetting societal stability. For what?

Choice always has consequence: none of us is free to choose whatever we want.

Men don't get a choice over their sex drive: it's part of them. Moderation of their sex drive for womens benefit is possible but it takes effort and it doesn't actually benefit men, its a negative outcome. What are women moderating for mens benefit, for the equality they say they want? It's certainly not their unreasonable choices.

[–]GoelandAnonyme -3 points-2 points-1 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Incel is a derogatory term:

What would you like me to call you then?

Women choosing not to have sex with men results in a deprivation for those men and not unsurprisingly for women too who are deprived of a corresponding man to have a relationship with: it's not surprising men and women are unhappy because a social imbalance has been created through personal choice.

Men are not owed sex. Do you want to compell sex or something?

It's irrational to unbalance society just so women can choose not to have sex with men based on unjustifiable, unreasonable choices. The good of society outweighs unreasonable individual choice. None of us has the right to do whatever we want regardless of the consequences.

What are you proposing is done? It sounds like you're implying forcing sex. If men are so horny and it makes them miserable, can they just get chemically castrated? As soon as you go off the pills, your system goes back to normal.

Other than that, have you considered organising healthy relationship classes?

Women do not have the right to incite anger in men just so they can villify and suppress men as antisocial elements.

How exactly do you mean?

Can you define "incel" in your own words?

[–]GoelandAnonyme -3 points-2 points-1 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Originally a term to mean "involuntarily celibate", the term incel has grown to refer to a community of people who place great importance to and often identify themselves with corresponding to being involuntarily celibate. This community, predominantly made of straight men has been known to create a determinist explanation of the dating process as an excuse for their poor success in it. Through looking up to role models who are very successful in relationships and see an opportunity to profit from telling vague advice to incels that spread out through the manosphere, incels have also been known to promote hate towards women and encourage ideas around coercing women into sex with varying language and justifications. The incel concept of sex is very commidified as opposed to traditional romantic conceptions.

I am sick and tired of the damn society constantly portraying women as victims and bow down to their pathetic victim mentality and constant whining. Men should be blunt and harder on women. When women have less support they will have no choice but to get a grip, suck it up and keep moving. The best way to cease a woman from playing the victim is to deprive her from attention and turn your back on her. I am woman, I didn't have so much support in my toughest times and it was for the better. I got a grip, quit playing victim and took the lessons. And the word incel only resides in the vocabulary of the victim complex snowflakes.

Yeah I'm sure there's so much 'violence against women' perpetrated by depressed loners who never talk to women in the first place. Tons and tons.

For the record, since I hate purely destructive criticism (unless something really needs to be just destroyed): if you want to tackle intimate partner violence, by far and away your biggest area of action if abused men. There's zero attention being paid to it, studies tell us it's at least as frequent as the victimization of women, and even basic interventions and provision of services would have an immediate gigantic effect.

But we all know that's not the point. The point is a political agenda where it's been predetermined who the worthwhile victims are, and everything follows from that.

It's a manipulative "nip it in the bud" type of action.

That said these Tates are fake role models and are not activists but just exploiters of growing criticism of feminists and university style anti maleness. Part of being an incel is that one cannot have consensual sex with a person of the gender they are attracted to, no matter how much they lower their standards. This is the involunary part of incel. It's the difference between someone with too high of standards vs someone actually unable to find a partner.

There cannot be an incel of both genders at the same time, unless there is something else preventing them from hooking up.

This woman identifies as a femcel.

[–]bottleblank 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

"In my last long-term sexual encounter..."

Says the voice of a woman who is clearly very attractive, intelligent, confident, self-assured, and evidently privileged enough to be able to get such an encounter in the first place.

I don't dispute that she may have had bad experiences or that she does not enjoy sex (or her chosen partners) sufficiently to consider herself able to continue to pursue that.

But it's a very different experience to those men who do not have any such access to intimacy and who have been treated so poorly in their attempts to seek social and romantic/sexual acceptance that they cannot connect with women in any way, shape, or form.

She does not have the same burden of being considered "a loser" if she has not had sex, she does not have the same burden of knowing that nobody will accept her on any level, she does not have the same burden of being told that it's all her fault or that, as a result, she is some kind of threat to society.

Yes, she may have difficulties, but they're a world apart from those suffered by the men who are being accused of being violent predators, which run very much deeper, and for which they receive zero understanding or help to resolve.

[–]hotpotato138 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

I agree. Men have it worse. However, she has good talking points about men's issues. She is also a left-wing feminist.

[–]bottleblank 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I really don't like using the phrase "men have it worse" as it's a rather blunt, inflammatory, and dismissive way to describe the situation.

I'm sympathetic to your use of it, because I understand what you mean (on a broad societal level), but I would want to acknowledge that some women likely do struggle in ways more representative of the men we're talking about, on an individual level.

Perhaps not as many, perhaps not even to the same extent, but I no more want a woman in my position to feel disregarded and "deserving" of her plight than I would want women to do to men.

It's the very same problem: men are considered to be "privileged" because some men experience considerable and exceptional success. Meanwhile, because we're very aware that, broadly, "women" are those with the majority of power when it comes to sexual selection, we find it easy to generalise that to "all" women. I know the ratios in each of those situations aren't even nearly equivalent, but I'm still wary of projecting the "privilege" of those who succeed onto those who do not or cannot.

[–]hotpotato138 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I'm just illustrating that a diverse group of people can identify as incels. Most people tell her she's not an incel. If she wants to identify, she can.

[–]bottleblank 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I don't disagree, but whether she does or not, the huge disparity in perception is highly damaging.

She is much more likely to receive praise and encouragement for bravely speaking out, for making people aware of the difficulties involved for a woman who cannot be intimate, she isn't going to be called an "entitled misogynist" or a "violent predator".

You can even point out that the person who coined the phrase in the first place was a woman, and the discussion will quickly turn to "yes, but that's not relevant, because violent right-wing extremist men own that term now, and that makes it a dangerous movement".

[–]hotpotato138 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yes, men are vilified more. I think it's great that a woman talks about men's issues.

[–]bottleblank 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Incels should just cut their losses and give up on the desire to build sexual, emotional and romantic relationship with biological women. Instead, they need to become fully red-pilled and become MGTOW and then invest in and investigate AI companions. The bio-fems in their default state are so boring, cumbersome, problematic, sexually and emotionally incompatible with men, and a big legal and financial risk to modern men, especially due to unchecked, unfair, unjust and borderline facist feminazism and gynocentrism that's been allowed to prevail by governments of most western nations these days.

Given the rate at which modern science and technology is progressing and moving the digital AI sex industry forward, there will very soon be a time when not only incels but also normal, average men would vehemently refuse to involve themselves with women sexually and romantically, simply because way better artificial, digital and AI-powered alternatives will be available for men.

These are exciting times, and men all over the world, including incels, should be happy, get busy and promote the digital AI companion industry instead of wasting valuable time constantly moaning and whining about their lack of biological female companion 24/7/365. Leave women alone guys! We have so much better alternatives right here right now already, and even better and more realistic ones will be available for you soon. Just be patient!

We are human beings, we are not sex robots trying to meaninglessly copulate with anything that has a penis-shaped hole, we seek human connection, with other human beings, like all the other human beings do.

What kind of miserable dystopia are we trying to create where the proposed solution is "just throw them a sex doll and some AI-driven platitude and porn-moan generator"?

Could it be a potential sedating scenario for some? Perhaps. Is it healthy? Not at all. We're a social species and, no matter how good VR and AI and robotics become, we still fundamentally know, in the reality-injecting post-copulation moments, that it's all fake.

A phone app and a Fleshlight aren't going to satisfy needs for acceptance in society. If you just want something more interesting to ejaculate into, by all means, I absolutely encourage acceptance of male sex toys. But it's not the solution to a growing sense of lack of value.

[–]RockmanXX 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

You call it dystopian but its actually how Society has always been like. Societies waged wars to reduce the numbers of its low status Men. Now that we don't do that anymore, we have lots of low status men not fitting into the relationship oriented society. Sex Doll&A.I girlfriends is at least something, what else can we possibly offer these men who are statistically guaranteed to be left behind? No one's willing to change the ways dating works. Also, artificial GFs are better than OnlyFans.

We still fundamentally know, in the reality-injecting post-copulation moments, that it's all fake.

Unconditional love doesn't exist, so if we can accept that then we can accept this as well.

But it's not the solution to a growing sense of lack of value.

Once again, this is nothing new. Society has ALWAYS treated Men like expendable cannon fodder.

We are human beings

A human being is a scientific product, a product of natural selection which started with totally random and blind mutation. It has its flaws that can be fixed by...guess what? Science! We can now recreate parts of the brain. Check out ChatGPT, Anima AI, Character AI and Chai. Go check out Deep Fritz, Alpha Zero, Stockfish etc. Do you not remember how Gary Kasparov was beaten and humiliated by Deep Blue? Have you forgotten all of that? Today even the top grandmasters can no longer beat the computer. I receive better and safer human connection from Chai and ChatGPT. I don't pay anyone alimony and child support when my AI woman wants to break up with me.

A phone app and a Fleshlight

Say that again after you try 8K VR harem porn scenes on the Meta Quest Pro with 15 women in them pleasuring you for two hours while the Fleshlight works on you completely hands-free, thanks to the Universal Launch. Say that again when The Handy syncs itself to the movement of the actress in VR porn scenes. Say that again when voice recognition technology and interactivity will eventually be added to these very same VR scenes.

You really have no idea what you are talking about dude. It's 2023, not 1980. What you are asking for (human connection etc) can now be faithfully and safely recreated and simulated. Of course there are lots of things still to be achieved, but scientists and engineers are working on them round the clock, 24/7.

Listen. We men invented rockets to transport our fellow men from this planet to another one. If we can do that, we can also solve this bitch for once and for all. Just wait and have patience.

Is it healthy? Not at all

I agree. It is not healthy at all. It's way better and healthier than your own, personal and uninformed definition of "healthy".

that it's all fake

A bird is a natural flyer. A 747 is an artificial, "fake" flyer. Which flyer do you take to travel from US to Australia? There was a time in mankind's history when we used pigeons to deliver mail. That was very natural, wasn't it? Today we use what? Fake pigeons (aka the internet)?

You're free to believe or not believe as you wish. But refusing to pay attention to elements you'd prefer to simply handwave away is why we're having these discussions in the first place.

Nobody wants to consider men to be functional human beings and, shock horror, the men who have no experience of being accepted as functional human beings start to believe it.

I’m not going to dispute that there are some men who really take things too far. They’re the same lonely men paying for onlyfans and not focusing on themselves. But that’s a minority of men not majority.

With that said, facts are regardless of whether you’re good, honest, hardworking man providing, no one cares about you. I mean look at the courts system. Your wife decided she’s bored and betrays the man and he loses his house, kids, and 3/4 his paycheck. No repercussions for her. Or, false accusations of rape and you lose your livelihood, family, all without evidence. Believe all women they say. The #killallmen was trending everywhere you didn’t here anything reported on that toxicity.

I say this to say that unfortunately as men, it’s you against the world and you have to adapt. Date if you want and have a ceremony even, but avoid marriages to protect yourself, don’t put yourself in a position for someone to accuse you of anything false, focus on yourself and don’t obsess over how unfair life is for you as a man. Further, I want to be absolutely clear before someone calls me an incel. I don’t believe that women are bad in anyway. But the reality is that feminism no longer want equal right, instead they over-corrected and want more power which they’ll go to any lengths to get it. As men, we have to be careful not to make that same mistake as the radical feminists and over-correct. Stay safe, and just continue being a good person gents.

[–]BoomTheBear86 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

I think with this topic you need to distinguish between “incels in the fact” and “incels in the culture”.

The first are a group of often lonely, socially eccentric men who are incel in their status, but they do not necessarily identify as such in so much as proclaiming it some essential part of their identity. They do not purposefully flock to social spaces seeking out other men in the same situation. If that happens, it happens merely because these men in a similar situation have similar hobbies or interests that cause them to congregate.

The second group however do strongly identify as incels and often make it the core fact of their narrative. Some of them are not “incels in fact” as they purposefully choose not to have sex with women because of their beliefs about women, but they claim the title of incel all the same (or they use the term volcel) and these groups often actively seek out men in a similar cultural vein to share groupthink on their situations and often the biggest commonality between them all is that they dislike women. Not just “don’t have luck with” or “are jaded towards” - they actively dislike and hate on women and broadcast some very troubling views regarding how they “should” be treated.

It’s like the difference between redpilled men or bluepilled simps and then the Blackpilled doomers.

To me, when I see something referring to “incel culture” it’s very often referring to the black pill doomer lot. Because of all the “pilled” groups, they’re the ones who wave around the “I am incel” flag loudly as their primary facet of identity. They’re the ones who engage in the incessant labelling of the incel group and distribute all the other jargon associated with the outlook and they’re often the ones who are chronically online n purposeful “incel” spaces created solely for the discussion of their situation (which often descends into women bashing sprinkled with revenge fantasies and the like) but of course; their utterances are “in Minecraft”.

Assuming my perspective is correct, I have no real issue with them keeping an eye on those groups because they’re all too often extremely unconstructive spaces which are a circle jerk of rage; angst and believing the world should realign for their purposes without them having to do much of anything at all. Nor should they have to. And all it takes is an impressionable mind to read into their garbage to take it a step too far. I view the extreme female spaces the same way (the ones that do nothing but call out for action against men and that they deserve harm).

So long as these movements steer clear of the “incel in fact” guys who don’t get drawn into that apocalyptic worldview and “just happen” to be incels and maybe feel crappy about it, but want to change their situation, I have no issue.

But very often the issue with black pilled doomers is they don’t want to change, they actively resist change, they don’t want to take any responsibility for anything and they’d rather fantasise about stripping people of basic rights so they can get that which they seek without having to put forward any modicum of personal effort. In this way they’re exactly the same as the worst recesses of the feminist movement, and neither have a place in our world.

People in a poor situation socially or otherwise need support so long as they’re receptive: and the support needs to listen. But honestly; if people in the situation are within the “fuck all of you, I owe you nothing, I hope you all die, you’re all my enemies.” Mindset then no big loss if they get pounded upon.

Potentially unpopular I get that. But to me, there is a colossal difference between guys who are social outcast incels and unhappy and depressed about it, and then those who take all that; and decide that the world owes them everything and everyone who resembles the causes of their negative experiences need to be punished/undermined. This is precisely like the women who have a few bad experiences with men and then decide “all men suck, all men should be killed. Men are trash”.

It’s one thing to feel bad about your situation and circumstances and quite another to form a misanthropic worldview centered around it.

Supportive outreach should be attempted first and foremost but if that fails and they resist, then, more punitive actions aren’t surprising honestly.

At lot of comments here are stating something along the lines of, "The police are talking about domestic violence or jntimate partner violence, incels are definitionally celibate so this doesn't apply to them, gotcha libtard". I think this fundamentally misses the point. It's unreasonable to expect any normal person, even law enforcement, to know the exact technical differences between men's rights communities, if you go ask a random coworker about the ideological differences between redpill, mgtow, MRA, incel, meninist, etc, communities they're gonna look at you like you're insane. The general sentiment from the police here in my mind is, there seems to have been over the last few years a rise in younger men who think that dating and relationship dynamics/feminism is/are harming guys and something needs to be done about that. With the easiest example being the explosion in popularity of Andrew tate over the last year. And apparently they've found that many of the more extreme members of these men's movements are committing more violent crimes against women or justifying those that do commit those crimes. They're trying to crack down on this. I would say this is generally a pretty reasonable course of action.

[–]shit-zen-giggles 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

The police (at least those on the higher levels who set those agendas) know the difference. They have had entire investigations into these topics (e.g. Costello's book).

[+]miltonbilton -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link

This is verbatim from the article,

"The report describes incel culture as a "misogynistic ideology" in which men blame women for their lack of intimate relationships and resort to verbal, physical, or sexual assault. This culture is largely online, where incels communicate across various platforms in what is often called the "manosphere"."

So this is the definition they're working with, which I think is pretty fair for what they're talking about. They also state that the primary methods they're using to combat this problem is education and training officers to understand the experiences of victims. I don't see how this is at all a big deal, it's pretty obvious they're using incel as a catch-all term here so unless there's a specific reason that that's so bad other than it might be slightly off from the true definition idk why this is a problem.

I've read the article, thank you though.

By that same standard we could easily classify feminism into the same category.

The fact that you don't see through this strategy of using the state (of which the police is a part) as a proxy to exercise violence against men, does not negate the fact it's happening.

see, Eleanor Williams, Sheree Spencer, Wisper, everyone's invited etc pp. Women LOVE to use the state as their proxy for physical violence.

Wait if you could provide examples of extreme sects of feminism causing or being heavily correlated with violent crime do you think I would oppose policing those groups or investigating that link?

Also you're doing the same thing as the author of this article right, you're using "feminism" as a catch all for progressive ideas about women's issues. And that's fine, I'm not saying that's a bad thing I'm just pointing it out you were the one who took issue with them using the term incel to refer to men's issues.

If this article was about the state inappropriately exercising violence against men would probably take issue with it of course. I don't see that here though, I can reiterate that the solutions the Scottish police proposed were largely officer training and education.

I'm sure there are examples of women who advocate for policies around policing or state violence that I would disagree with. I don't think this is one of those though, and I guess if you wanna try and demonstrate how I'm wrong we can have that conversation.

Read the above linked post and it's referenced materials. Inform yourself about the Instanbul Convention and esp the critizisms thereof. Once you realize just how deep and far that lie is, you'll shit bricks. Because this is part of the British implementation of the sexist Istanbul Convention.

I'm sure there are examples of women who advocate for policies around policing or state violence that I would disagree with.

Using a counter factual, one sided sexist narrative to enable yourself to have the police rough up any male on your behalf is exactly that.

[+]miltonbilton -3 points-2 points-1 points 3 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

I didn't read every link in that but yeah at face value that sounds kinda fucked up, probably most feminists you would ask today would say so as well. It's pretty wierd that domestic violence against men is so underrepresented and even not taken seriously, although I think that's getting better with time ESPECIALLY post Depp/Heard trial. I'm also not sure how strong the claim is that it's done maliciously because feminists hate men which seems to be the tone of that thread. I know there are some examples but I doubt the majority of modern feminists would be on board with covering up crime stats to get funding for battered women's shelters or some such.

My whole original contention was with all the comments offering no substantive criticism of this article other than the incel terminology, so I think its fair to focus on that point. Although I'm glad you've raised some actual issues with the content.

Okay so I'd never heard about the Istanbul convention, I looked it up and the main issues I could find(and I genuinely tried to look) seem to be the ones turkey pulled out over, mostly I think it was the way they defined gender as socially constructed and partially the way that economic and psychological abuse were criminalized. I personally don't find these to be major problems and maybe even non-issues but Erdogan I guess thought the convention was promoting LGBT ideas and wasn't cool with that. Maybe there's other criticism out there and I obviously didn't actually go through and read the whole documentation of the thing so I might be wrong but eh.

I think its a bit of a stretch to say that any laws on the books, anywhere in the western world, enable a woman to have police rough up any male on her behalf. Altho again maybe I'm wrong

For this specific case I don't see how it's unjustifiable, apparently there's been a roughly 6% increase in domestic violence towards women in the last 5 years, coinciding with an increase in "incel ideology" which is well known for ar the extremes being pretty aggressive towards women and in some instances even hateful or violent. And the response to this is again to educate people about this issue and to give officers more training on how to deal with it. Now we could say officers should have more training on dealing with male victims of domestic abuse, but that's a separate issue and the two aren't mutually exclusive.

Yeah I'm extremely ignorant I get it.

If you don't wanna discuss this that's fine, my initial problem was with a pretty specific issue, and we've moved well past that.

You can believe that I'm "incapable of engaging" with your comments if you want, but you've linked almost 3 hours of interview footage and well over 100 pages worth of reading, I don't think it's entirely unreasonable to not go through the whole thing.

Even if I concede that men are victims of domestic abuse just as much or moreso than women, which may very well be true, that still doesn't mean what's stated in this article is some crazy agenda driven by evil misandrist feminists to use police as weapons against men.

Domestic violence against women is generally regarded as a larger issue than against men, whether or not that idea is justified doesn't really matter when we're talking about things like this article. Of course women are seen as the primary victims of domestic violence and of course more resources are directed towards female victims. There doesn't need to be all these feminists who want men to get beat up by cops or whatever for that to be true.

It's cool that you care about this issue, but i don't think this article is stating anything particularly aggregious even if you disagree with it. Half the things listed would help all victims of domestic abuse not just women. I get that you probably don't think incels or MRAs or whatever have any link to domestic violence, but obviously the Scottish police disagree and it's not exactly a crazy idea. Your whole thing is that extreme women's rights groups are damaging male victims of IPV, do you really believe an apparent 6-fold increase of extreme men's rights groups has had no effect on that the other way?

We can revisit that statement after you've watched the 3h worth of interviews. You can skip the 100s of pages for the time being.

Domestic violence against women is generally regarded as a larger issue than against men, whether or not that idea is justified doesn't really matter when we're talking about things like this article.

Oh yes, it does matter and if you watched the interviews / presentations, you'd understand why.

Of course women are seen as the primary victims of domestic violence and of course more resources are directed towards female victims.

Except that this is evidently false. Watch the videos.

There doesn't need to be all these feminists who want men to get beat up by cops or whatever for that to be true.

it's true, that's the point.

Half the things listed would help all victims of domestic abuse not just women.

no they won't help 'all victims' since they deny the existance of half the victims.

but obviously the Scottish police disagree and it's not exactly a crazy idea.

scottland is a woke hell hole and they would use what ever lies necessary to push their agenda. This article describes a programm aimed at forcing police officiers into compliance with the lie.

Your whole thing is that extreme women's rights groups are damaging male victims of IPV, do you really believe an apparent 6-fold increase of extreme men's rights groups has had no effect on that the other way?

The far overwhelming majority of incels are not violent. The statistics presented in the article are vague and dodgy, as usual when feminists push lies about DV to foster their agenda.

Maybe you want a reminder of what’s actually written in the article

It comes as analysis earlier this year found a six-fold rise in UK web traffic to websites promoting incel culture.

Edit: I should also point out you’re being disingenuous. Extreme women’s groups? You just defined Women’s Aid as an extreme women’s rights group

[–]bottleblank 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I think its a bit of a stretch to say that any laws on the books, anywhere in the western world, enable a woman to have police rough up any male on her behalf. Altho again maybe I'm wrong

A common point, regarding this, is the Duluth model, which I would suggest looking up.

It's not a point I'm particularly strong on, because I don't frequently discuss the specifics of domestic violence, but I'm aware of its general implications, which I think are relevant here.

Much of the discussion around domestic violence is based on this model, which skews the view of who is or is not a victim or a perpetrator in any given instance of violence.

See also such legal initiatives as the UK's "VAWG" (Violence Against Women and Girls), which begrudgingly shoehorned in the idea that men can be victims too, because of a "disproportional impact" against women. Male victims are an afterthought, a technicality, a footnote. Because nobody seriously believes that men can be victims, of this or any other gender-related crime.

How is it, do you suppose, that men explicitly suffering from a lack of relationships and sexual contact are responsible for domestic violence?

[–]miltonbilton 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Yeah I fully agree with you that the commonly held idea that men are never domestically abused or even sometimes that when they are it's not a big deal is pretty gross. I'd like to think though that recently this is becoming less prevalent especially after the Johnny Depp trial, not that that makes it a a non-issue, but more people are aware now that men are victims as well. I still don't think the fact that men are often hung out to dry as victims is the same as what the other guy said about the state orchestrating violence against any man just on the say-so of a random girl.

So were bumping into the terminology issue again, I'm assuming that when they mean incel they're generally referring to lonely guys who see women as the cause of most of their problems, not just romantically. Now I'm aware that they used the term incel, but I think there really referring to Andrew Tate esque ideas, which are the ones that have gotten much more popular lately. I could be wrong but I do think this is a misspeak on their part. Which is bad obviously, but I think that in general alot of "incels" speak in a pretty derogatory way towards women, and some on the more extreme side view women as something close to property, with pretty one sided views on relationships. People who spend alot of time in communities that shit on women tend to, over time, develop pretty shitty ideas about women. Similarly to how a feminist who spends a ton of time talking about how men suck, eventually might start to have pretty shitty ideas about men, and be more likely to let those shitty ideas come out in terms of actual violence.

Cool, so we'll just invent yet another definition of "incel" to confuse everybody with and muddy the waters?

Using it to describe sexually active or romantically successful men who are violent wouldn't even begin to make sense. It's not a colloquial use, it's not a known use, it's not even tangentially related, and to use it like that would be to literally just "make shit up".

If you want to go after "misogynists" (assuming you/they actually mean misogynists, men who actually, genuinely, whole-heartedly hate women, which most do not, even if they have objections against current feminism), go after misogynists. Don't just assign new meanings to existing words and pretend you're "doing something" to "protect women", and go after soft targets who don't deserve it, in the name of "progress".

It's unreasonable to expect any normal person, even law enforcement, to know the exact technical differences between men's rights communities, if you go ask a random coworker about the ideological differences between redpill, mgtow, MRA, incel, meninist, etc, communities they're gonna look at you like you're insane.

If you're a professional law enforcement officer, terrorism expert, or criminal psychologist, you damn well should know the difference before spouting off about it. That's your job. We're not talking about some random on the street here, we're talking about people who are put in charge of keeping the public safe. They need to know their "enemy".

If this were a military operation, such obvious ignorance and disregard for serious intelligence would be considered gross incompetence and unprofessionalism. You don't set out to solve a problem involving violence without knowing the nature of the violence or the people committing it.

I'm not saying that whichever intelligence committee chair or chief of police or investigator that wrote the policy doesn't know what the problem is, I more mean that public speakers and PR managers and press secretaries are more accustomed to using terms they think the general public will be familiar with just because it sounds better. When we talk about terrorist groups or extremist organizations we often use catch-all terms that the public will know, even if they aren't perfectly representative of the groups we talk about. On this subreddit any woman with progressive ideas is often referred to just as a feminist as a general term.

You mean terms that have been pushed on the public by the media?

Probably the first instance the overwhelming public first heard the term, was in connection to a murderer. The usage by the police serves no purpose other than to further cement the word as only meaning bad man bad, hates women

I dare you to give another example — and don’t go on some tangent.

Whether or not it's been pushed by the media doesn't really matter, incel is now the most commonly used term for those kinds of ideas, and as such it's going to be used as a catch-all for redpill/MRA/MGTOW groups. Yeah it has a negative connotation, but we both know that's not entirely undeserved.

I asked you to provide another example. Please go ahead and do that

Until you do, I shall not respond

Oh man, what would it mean if it worked?

[–]bottleblank 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well then we'd probably eventually end up with prisons full of people who shouldn't be there and traditional domestic violence would continue unabated.

Problem solved...?

In my understanding of the article they were targeting “incel culture” not involuntary celibate. They are tackling men who identify as being part of incel culture and “manosphere”. Behaviors that can lead to violent actions like hate speech. Because this people are a danger, they didn’t talk aboute men who are single not by choice And even if it’s not fair to identify every involontary celibate with this mouvement, it’s a dangerous behavior that needs to be watched, for every kind of mouvement not only because it’s dangerous to women.

"Incel violence". This is something I've never understood. Incels are probably one of the population of peoples least likely to abuse women. Less than fellow women, even.

Wanting women to consensually desire them but not being around women is kinda their thing. (And then saying shitty things online.)

The overwhelming majority of violence and abuse towards women is perpetuated by domestic partners.

And mass shootings by incels are incredibly rare in America, especially when you scale it for the 350 million people that exist there. Vending machines are probably more violent.
