In the book, the protagonist Scarlett O Hara recalls how her mother taught her never to take any gift other than candies, flowers and a small bottle of Florida Water from her suitors.

Coz, if she did, men would think she is no lady and would try to take liberties.

Since in my culture we tend to avoid premarital sex and date to marry, my mom always suggested we go Dutch, not to take any expensive gifts or if a man insists on paying, go to the cheapest place you can find, and order basic coffee + sandwhich which doesnt cost more than $5-10.

My mam was very clear that men are simple creatures If they splurge, they are expecting sex.
