I hate so much the way "Karen" has become a way to try to shut women up. I think it's even more insidious because it originally applied to people who were being racist, so it's like calling someone a "racist b*tch" just for not wanting randos to take her picture.

And I'm not an expert but that looks like a pretty run of the mill camera to me. Regardless though-a professional photographer would respect her desire to not be photographed.

I'm sorry but having worked in the fashion and costume world for nearly 20 years, most photographers need to have release forms signed by the model / person who they are photographing.

Just because you have a "professional" camera doesn't mean you can go around taking photos of people on the street.......would these commenters be saying the same thing if this guy was outside a school?!!
She is well within her right to ask or to be photographed and to report him to the police.

Just because he has a "professional camera" doesn't mean he's a professional photographer. No man wants to jack off to pixilated photos. Gotta get that fapping material in 4k. Especially if you're going to post it somewhere... or maybe even sell them.

I don't trust any man taking random photos in public. Especially if he doesn't ask the "subject" for permission first. And she has a right to ask him to deleted the photos, as he didn't make sure she was ok with it.

Men just want the right to be able to record anything and call it art. When I take artsy photos, I make sure no people are in them. Artsy photography doesn't REQUIRE that you take pictures of complete strangers without permission. If he's So PrOfEsSiOnAl, shouldn't someone be paying him to take photos of themselves instead of him sneaking around taking photos of young women?

Even street fashion photographers ask people for permission before uploading photos online. If someone’s uncomfortable they’re uncomfortable I don’t get why people (women especially) are being shamed for that.

Also just because someone’s holding a DSLR doesn’t make them a professional lol. There’s a bunch of creeps who parade around as artists and use it to perv on young women and children. Those pictures didn’t look aesthetic at all the commenters are so full of shit.

I finally got her to see the light with situations like this, by asking her if my dead dad would ever do this ( he was very into photography and would have turned 71 this year). She got really insulted and immediately backtracked, while recognizing that a man like my dad has NO REASON TO TAKE PERSONAL CLOSE UPS OF ANY FEMALE. "Daddy studied the stars, I couldn't imagine him having any interest in other women" YEP because he didn't.

HVM backstory My dad was that very quiet engineer type, and he must've loved my mother because he never disrespected her, and absolutely cherished me as his daughter. He tried to step up and do laundry, cook meals, and domestic work but mother actually refused lol. Nothing in our house stayed broken because he fixed/repaired everything. He did the grocery shopping with me on Sundays, did all the lawn care for our house, helped dry my hair after bath time, taught me how to play video games and use computers, let my mom go on insane shopping sprees for her and mine clothes, he cleaned my cat's litter box, treated our dog as a companion animal, purposely made time for him and I to spend together (watching rare comets and falling stars, meteor showers, building models, playing with barbies), made my lunch EXACTLY how I liked it, let me make mistakes, curated my love of STEM technologies, NEVER said a WORD about my mother's weight (she is clinically obese), made 6 figure salary and pushed my mom to level up her career, wrote in his autobiography that his dream for me was to be The President, held investments in my name to be available when I turned 18, spent time on his own hobbies like carpentry, building computers and star gazing without them EVER interfering with family time, and all of that adds up to:

I think "Karen" needs to be discussed and analyzed more. Its the not the first term of its kind to go from a DESCRIPTIVE terms for a very specific kind of situation, to a PRESCRIPTIVE term to police behavior.

From my experience, it had its origins in that image macro of the lady with that one haircut. It was more associated with upper middle class, somewhat neurotic and controlling white women. It originally had little to do with racism at all; it was more focused on customer service and entitlement to special treatment, as well as "snitching" on people to managers and other middling authorities. I found it to be more of a statement on classism, on the injustice of an obviously privileged person getting a lower class individual "in trouble" for a low stakes problem.

It very quickly expanded from that to all women. Instead of criticizing actual displays of exerting privilege over the unprivileged, it became a derogatory term for a shrill and authoritarian woman. Remember the "CALL 911 NOW!" sample from that one Skrillex song? That was from a video of a middle aged woman screaming at some kids filming videos in a parking lot. Before, she wouldn't never been called a Karen because she didn't embody that idea of a privileged, squeaky clean white woman; she was overweight, a little slow, and dressed poorly. Now, the comments are riddled with "Karen" this and "Karen" that. We've used specific, evocative names to make jokes and derogatory comments for a long time ("OK, Kyle, why don't you go drink a Monster and punch a hole in your bedroom wall.") but this is the only time a specific name has been transferred from a descriptive term to a prescriptive term.

For a brief time before the normies got ahold of it, it was used particularly for white women attempting to change other people's behavior, often through force and authority. I'm not gonna say that there isn't an abundance of this in American society, but there's also a reason why videos of this occurring tend to blow up: its a rare occurance because usually, women are not allowed that level of societal power. The only exception to this is when a woman who is owned as property by another male is violated. There were, for example, lynch mobs in the past when a woman was raped (or claimed to be raped by) a black man, but no lynch mobs if that woman said that her husband was beating her.

Now, a "Karen" has evolved from a woman trying to control other people's behavior to a woman trying to control how other people treat her. There is a critical difference between saying "I don't want pictures taken of me without my consent" and screaming at kids taking pictures in a parking lot because they don't have "permission" to record, like the CALL 911 NOW! lady. Having standards for how other people treat you--and enforcing those standards--is entirely different from trying to change other people's behavior.

So we end up with this term for a woman trying to police other's behavior, but is now used to police woman's behavior beforehand. The exact same thing happened to "basic." It went from a retroactive term to analyze preferences or to critique aesthetic laziness, to a prescriptive, policing term to change women's (and young girls in particular) choices to be more respectable and familiar to men.

The pattern is the same across all these terms. When women try to assert any control over themselves and how others treat them, its distorted by the general audience into a way to control women once more.

for those that may not know, there is something called the right to image.is not legal for anyone to take your photo and/ or post it without your consent (agreement).

no photographer is allowed to "just take photos".

there is something very important called CONSENT.

if you are in Europe look up the European Convention on Human Rights (article 8 - on private life)if you are in the EU, look up the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights (article 8 - protection of personal data also)

also for EU, see the applicability of the GDPR (general data protection regulation which is applicable in all EU Member States). according to the GDPR: consent can be retracted at any point in time!

for US & the rest of the world - exists similar legislation in everyone's country of origin.

I do photography as a hobby. I feel like taking pictures of strangers without their consent is an invasion of privacy. Those people have a right to be upset if you don't obtain their permission. It's part of the reason why my only human photography subjects are people that I know.

This is just further evidence that men view women as property that are not allowed to have boundaries. Only men are allowed to have boundaries.

These comments are ridiculous. So when did being able to pay a couple hundred dollars for a camera (1) make you a “professional” photographer? And (2) allow professional photographers to trample on the basic concepts of invasion of privacy and consent. Ironically, professional photographers would actually have to obtain consent over their subjects. Just a sign of toxic trash men thinking “professional” means they can do whatever they want aka privilege whereas when women act professionally, it usually reflects a level of accountability and responsibility to their industry and skillset
