a friend of mine and I hit a bar for happy hour after work one night, and outside the front door we ran into his ex girlfriend and her friend. Struck up conversation and it turned out they were going to the same bar because it was some poetry open mic night.

Then it comes out that they don't have any money...zero, can't pay the cover charge and were just hanging out front looking for someone to pay it for them.

I was about halfway through thinking "what the fuck?" when my buddy pipes up that he'll pay their cover.

Once inside, these two immediately asked us to buy them drinks. I said "no" because I didn't see any reason why I would, but again my buddy says "sure'. buys them a couple of drinks, and they say "thanks, see you later" and walked off.

I was just amazed at the entitlement that young women apparently feel...to just leave home without a dime to their name, and expect that some random man will pay for their evening.

Where's the dignity, where's the self respect? where's "I dont need a man"? it all goes out the window when they're broke.

same situation happened to me not a long time ago. went to a bar with a friend and hopped in a table with a few chicks on it. we discussed for a while until one of them was asking are we finally going to get them the drinks. we were apparently entitled to get them drinks because "gentlemen and traditions" or some other bullshit. as a joke response to what she told me, i asked if she should stay in the kitchen and stop nagging. immediately an apeshit reaction.

in the end, my response wasn't that clever really but she shouldn't expect random guys to get her a drink after 5 minutes of talking.

I rarely ever drank at bars because I was afraid of my drinks being drugged*. Looking back on my 21st birthday in a backwoods bar somewhere in TX, I'm horrified at how many drinks from strangers I accepted that night. These days, I prefer some wine at home with a few good episodes of Law & Order, my dogs, my ferrets, and my husband yelling about one video game or another in the next room.

Edit* Not necessarily by men. I'm actually more afraid of being drugged by women. The lesbians and bi women I've encountered in bars and at parties are WAY more physically aggressive than the majority of men I've dealt with in the same settings.

POV of woman (not the US).

Don't know about modern girls (I am 40 now), but when i was a teen I was told by my mom that if you get smth from anybody (not only boys) you owe this person. So when i started dating at the first date i ordered maximum smth to drink. But if i felt like "not this guy" i paid myself. Abd even later as adult if we went to restaurant i always had enough money to pay for my meal.

Payment was ok for me if i really liked the guy and didn't mind to proceed (not meaning sex right after date but in general).

But now we have a different situation: girls really believe that guy IS to pay for anything (my money are my money, your money - is our money) and are greatly pissed off when guy doesn't do it.

And it's the problem. Our society was quite patriarchal till 90s, but at the same time women were more involved into working life. But know girls are told to be so equal to men in right... but as for the money questions - they stick to old times when men rule money flows.

And I as mother am confused now - how to raise my boys to keep them gentlemen but don't let such girls use them.

When on dates with dudes, we shared the bill always, but with girls? I only managed to get on one date with a girl, and she just wanted the food. Others just didn't show up, or brag about how they don't like the place and left immediately

If men unilaterally earn more money than women, this mindset isn't necessarily problematic. In fact, it's how we've interacted with women since time immemorial - we bring masculinity, protection and resources and in exchange they bring beauty, femininity and fidelity.

Problem is they want to out earn us and be strong and independent.

So let them be strong and independent and buy their own drinks.

Don't ghost. This is the \socialized** nature, and it sounds like they've been cool otherwise. Sounds like you're pretty decent acquaintances, if not friends, and they're not using their bullshit hamster filter on you. USE THIS TO LEARN, because you're going to catch some truths other folks have had to learn the hard way.

Hell, one of my best friends (met through dating her friend, she's beautiful but we both agree it would be a massive clash, does modeling, blah, blah, blah) would go out with us and the crew, and would get drinks and just bring them back to us. I don't think we've ever legitimately paid for a drink when we'd go out with her and her friends.

Suggest to them that they aren't feminists nor are they particularly up on the latest developments in gender roles.

Maybe explain to them that it's one or the other. You can be either a feminist or a traditionalist and if they expect men to act a certain way out of some misguided sense of tradition then they should be doing the exact same thing.
