I've had one guy friend who was falsely accused of rape, and he never talked about it, except for the rare and serious conversation (and never in the context of saying false accusations are common). Why? Because it was a traumatic experience and super painful and embarrassing for him to talk about. (Basically he dated a girl in high school who turned out to have some serious psychological issues. She accused him of rape after he broke up with her, but he had a solid alibi--he was at work during the time she said it happened--and she later admitted it was false.)

Yes, being open about your traumatic experience means you're lying, says the poster on a subreddit where people post daily about how they are survivors of sexual violence.

About Half of Rape Allegations are False, Research Shows

False allegations of rape are believed to be more common than many persons realize. These are the findings of four research studies:

A review of 556 rape accusations filed against Air Force personnel found that 27% of women later recanted. Then 25 criteria were developed based on the profile of those women, and then submitted to three independent reviewers to review the remaining cases. If all three reviewers deemed the allegation was false, it was categorized as false. As a result, 60% of all allegations were found to be false.1 Of those women who later recanted, many didn't admit the allegation was false until just before taking a polygraph test. Others admitted it was false only after having failed a polygraph test.2

In a nine-year study of 109 rapes reported to the police in a Midwestern city, Purdue sociologist Eugene J. Kanin reported that in 41% of the cases the complainants eventually admitted that no rape had occurred.3 In a follow-up study of rape claims filed over a three-year period at two large Midwestern universities, Kanin found that of 64 rape cases, 50% turned out to be false.4 Among the false charges, 53% of the women admitted they filed the false claim as an alibi.5

According to a 1996 Department of Justice report, “in about 25% of the sexual assault cases referred to the FBI, ... the primary suspect has been excluded by forensic DNA testing.6 It should be noted that rape involves a forcible and non-consensual act, and a DNA match alone does not prove that rape occurred. So the 25% figure substantially underestimates the true extent of false allegations.

And according to former Colorado prosecutor Craig Silverman, “For 16 years, I was a kick-ass prosecutor who made most of my reputation vigorously prosecuting rapists. ... I was amazed to see all the false rape allegations that were made to the Denver Police Department. ... A command officer in the Denver Police sex assaults unit recently told me he placed the false rape numbers at approximately 45%.”7

According to the FBI, about 95,000 forcible rapes were reported in 2004.8 Based on the statements and studies cited above, some 47,000 American men are falsely accused of rape each year. These men are disproportionately African-American.9

Some of these men are wrongly convicted, sentenced, and imprisoned. Even if there is no conviction, a false allegation of rape can “emotionally, socially, and economically destroy a person.”10

I think, when a woman tells you some sexual past where they were a victim, you need to ask:

"Okay, now how does this affect our relationship?"

A couple of issues I've seen;

When it comes to STDs, I've noticed women will often blame the guy and have a story about it, you need to question the convenience of such a story.
The way they describe other men will be the way they think about you. If they describe a previous relationship was bad because "it was just about sex", while they may have indeed been the case, the reality is, your relationship will then have a dead bedroom because the previous relationship was just about sex. It could be because of trauma, it could be because they have a dichotomy, it can be both (they go hand in hand).
There are two sides to every story, picture the guys version.

At the end of the day, you can't take responsibility for their previous sexual experiences, they need to deal with it, and if they aren't you need to read "No more Mr Nice Guy".

When things were getting serious between my GF and I (she's now an Ex), she told me that she'd once been raped.

Thinking back, it was the perfect time to tell me, seeing as we had begun talking about moving in together and were getting quite serious. I'd have been none the wiser if she hadn't told me, because it didn't seem to affect her. She even told me as much.

She said it was an experience that she'd never forget, but that she was 'ok with it now'. 'Ok' meaning that she'd emotionally dealt with it, and had moved on successfully. We had a really good relationship and it continued to be so after she'd told me. We only rarely talked about it after that, and when we did, it was only in passing. In her view (she told me so directly) it just didn't bother her anymore and the sex she and I had together made no emotional connection to the rape for her.

Alas, we broke up about a year or so later. But due to other issues entirely unrelated to her rape. We still run into each other on occasion, and usually have a pleasant 'catch me up' conversation.

I think the timing is important here. If on a first date a woman tells you that she's been raped and it seems to be a huge part of her identity, that is definitely a red flag. But divulging that information in a confident moment in the interest of being open and honest, I think is an entirely different deal.

I honestly hate things like this. As in this situation. I have been part of testifying in more than one investigations where a woman lied and I was witness. I also have consoled a friend the day that her rapist finished his jail time.

If they were raped at least it's not their fault they're damaged. If they're lying about it, that says they're a pathogical liar and that means they like playing the perpetual victim even if they aren't. That's an even bigger red flag the size of a football stadium. If they'd falsely accuse somebody else of raping them then you have to worry about them being vindictive and accusing you if you break up with them. I asked her after the movie "So thats the guy?" she imidiately went on the defensive and did not want to talk about it. The next day I showed up at her work to have lunch. Some of her friends came to our both to say hello and chat. My gf brings up that she ran into you know who last night. Every girl got excited, asked questions and acted like she ran into a member of a boyband. I was puzzeled ... and left it at that. A few other times I swung by her work would see them interacting . She told me it was always at work , which was a very busy coffee shop. It just never added up for me, and it fizzeled out after 3 months. He could have been doing all that of what she had said. Fellow Deer Men, I'm glad others saw this post and crossed it to here because while I understand the OP (It's not a unique position, people lie) it also infuriated me to have them paint all men with the same brush.

OP's experiences are understandable and I won't detract from that, I have found myself on both sides of the same situation, one where I was hoping to get laid and where I was absolutely not but the idea that one would cancel out the other is pretty maddening tbh or that because we were accused we must just simply not understood that we committed a crime.

I would like to ask the poster, did I not understand I was raping when I was about 8 and had two teenage girls just brush themselves against me while talking about their sexual experiences and laughing (I look back on this day so confused, it's not believable in the slightest yet there I was). Did I not understand I (at 9) was raping this poor poor 15 year old who told me to follow her into the woods and then proceeded to grab, poke and and prod whatever she felt like? Did my friend (more of a street acquaintance really) not know he was also raping when she got herself pregnant with his kid (again, 9).

When I was older, I failed to realise that rape could also be done while you weren't looking at someone, refusing to sleep with them. This woman had come to my house after a night of drinking, an ex of a friend, we slept together and I regretted it the moment she left. My door almost came off the hinges the way she slammed it after she got her stuff and walked. Turns out, she had only come back to fuck me a second time just to make sure I had raped her the first time, so ya know, I spent a few months with her around accusing until my friends rallied around me and dropped her and the few people that sided with her. It was telling that the people who dropped her had been close to me for over a decade whereas those that believed her story had only just met me. I'm glad I had them, I'm glad that people know me, despite my lazy and shitty personality, and recognised what bad I would do, and what bad I wouldn't.

To defend the OP, I have been in situations where I've not stopped the first or even second time someone has said no, or have completely misread someones feelings or deliberately not thought about it. Those are the ones I think about when I'm trying to sleep, wondering if I made another me who thinks no is okay if you ignore it, that thinks if you can take it you can. When you realise you're taking your experiences and literally pushing it onto others, well that's an eventful and emotional evening.

I'm glad I met someone who takes time with me, listens and tries to understand what I've experienced and how it's affected me in ways that I sometimes didn't realise. If she had the idea OP had, then I would still be very much alone and significantly unhappier, though she might be a little less stressed lol

I’m not sure of the actual stats, it’s probably in the middle somewhere. Feminists try to silence anything that may damage their narrative and refuse to believe bad women exist.

I was never accused but an associate in the military I was stationed with was accused because she ended up being married and people found out. Her husband stayed with her - wouldn’t be my choice - even after the military investigators had found no evidence backing her claims. I know some feminists will say “lack of evidence doesn’t mean he was innocent”. In a court of law it does, as it does in the UCMJ which is quicker to prosecute usually. In any case, there was more than lack of evidence, there was evidence to the fact she was lying as eyewitness accounts corroborated his story.

She didn’t get charged of course, she just went on like nothing happened and his career was almost ruined. Long story short he was chastised and an outcast. I was one of those people as well, but when he was cleared it didn’t change for him. He was still stuck on shitty duties and didn’t get things we wanted. He ended up PCSing overseas. He wasn’t the best troop out there, but a rapist he was not. He was trustworthy enough to obtain a TS SCI, which says at least something about his moral compass.

Well, deer men, fox men, bear men, lizard men, whale men, shark men, etc., should generally stay away from the humans - most of 'em will seriously not be into that kind'a thing.

And just because a girl/woman says she's been raped, isn't, in and of itself a reason to stay away. If she doesn't want you around - simple, stay the hell away. In the unlikely event that her claim is leaking and oozing falsification - stay away - stay way way way far the hell away. But also be aware that in genuine cases, folks may not recall absolutely 100% consistently and correctly, but if key points and objective facts and such don't properly align - run like hell and don't look back.

Anyway, have been in relationships with some women that have had rape or other sexual trauma in their life history. And again, that, at least in and of itself, is certainly not a reason to avoid 'em (likewise neither should it be reason for someone to avoid some guy with such in his life history). Anyway, really not an issue.

On the other hand, those making false accusations, or are too messed up in the head (e.g. military attack helicopters landing or nearly landing on their roof to threaten and intimidate them ... except it was a densely populated urban area - and nobody else saw or heard this helicopter) ... yeah, avoid the liars, crazy ones, etc. I had one, many moons ago, threaten* to make a false accusation. I noped the hell out'a there - should'a done so faster and harder, but in any case I sure got the hell out and away. (*she was threatening to cry rape if I didn't have sex with her - I noped the hell out'a that one fast 'n hard).

I mean sure, generally that may be a concern or relevant or related topic, but is there any credible evidence that what was posted is at all in fact a false accusation? Ought "False Accusation" tag be reserved for cases where there's significant/substantial convincing evidence, and even criminal charges, that some actual false accusation was in fact made and it's more-or-less been proven (or at least quite substantiated) that the accusation was false? i had the same reaction until i realized it said "falsely ACCUSED of rape". that's way way different than someone saying they've been raped.

If you've been raped, someone distrusting you about it is the last thing you want, i would much rather comfort someone that is lying about it rather than ruining a close friendship/relationship.

I understand and agree that post isn't a good post since it's making a huge generalization at the cost of men's mental health/lives BUT comparing it to a girl coming out saying they've been raped is not right

I haven’t looked into it but just from the title itself, I’d definitely avoid people if they’ve been accused of rape until they’re proven innocent. Any rapist won’t openly admit to being one most of the time and my job is not to figure out whether the accused is innocent or not, my job is to protect myself. Edit: now that I’ve read it, I can say I’ve experienced similar situations bc I decided to easily trust people around me. They’re saying to keep your guard up around people who might’ve raped/sexually assaulted someone else. They’re not wrong in my view, can someone please explain to me why everyone’s so pissed? I’d love to get another point of view.
