So true. It bothers me how apps like TikTok are telling girls to do it. This is coming from someone that has done this stuff before at young age because someone talked me into it and I was living in poverty. The trauma from it is not worth it . It's not empowering and it's not quick easy money. You're basically playing a lottery to get famous on the internet- like any other social website like YouTube or instagram, BUT risking your reputation and future job stability if anyone finds out. It's highly unstable income, and it's highly unlikely you'll make enough to live off of let alone be comfortable on for a while. $5 subscriptions are a joke. You need hundreds of fans just to make rent yet you're working harder for it than a 9-5. The money you earn goes back to paying for outfits, props, lights, cameras, constant hair and makeup and nails. There's a reason so many beautiful girls want to be models singers or actresses you get paid WAY more and you still sell your sexiness without the ruined reputation. Even high class escorts on twitter blur their faces and charge thousands for sex. OF is making nudes cheap and devaluing women's bodies.

I can only speak from consideration not experience; I heavily considered sex work when I was a lot younger and very desperate (I live in a food desert and it's rural af so you have like 70 people fighting for a cashier job at Piggly Wigglys).

What stopped me was a few things. The amount of cons/what could go wrong and the fact that no matter how much I would almost sign up or put myself out there, I'd get crippling fear that I couldn't explain.

I managed to find a job outside of my town and was able to get the loans to go be an ECE, but looking back on it, the fear of leaked anything would be sitting over my head. Having friends who've been sex workers was eye opening to how degrading and inconsistent it is too.

So seeing barely legal girls on tiktok with big nails flashing money, glorifying it and saying how far ahead they are than their peers, is upsetting. Even the best of the best in that field have slow days and inconsistent income.

I tried panty selling once because it was supposedly going to be “such easy money!” and the conversations I had to endure with pathetic assholes made me want to kill myself. Many of them never even ended up buying, and were only out to completely waste my time because they had nobody else to talk to, which was equal parts annoying and depressing as fuck. When I sat down and did the math on how much of my time all of it was taking, it came out to be less than minimum wage. And I never even showed anyone my face, thank god. I can’t even imagine the regret if I’d risked images with my face included being out there on the internet forever, possibly coming back to haunt me, for less than minimum wage.

Young women should be so much more careful than they currently seem to be with the kind of stuff they share online. Even on apps that supposedly delete things or whatever. Creepers will always find a way to violate you.

I think that as feminists we should encourage young girls to get a good education and work hard so they can get the good jobs that are currently taken by mostly men and become financially independent.

With online sex work it's only the top few people who become rich, then there is a small minority who can make a living off of it but the majority will never be able to pay rent. We have seen screenshots of asshole men who try to blackmail women with the porn and nudes that can be found of them online. If you apply for a well paying job and they do a background check and find porn, you are probably out.

It's just not worth the risk!! Those girls who are just 18 are not mature enough to make this decision that will impact their future and career so heavily. Not to mention the psychological effects of selling your body.

Yes you should celebrate and be proud of your sexuality BUT sex work is not something you do to express that.

As an ex-sex worker, I can assure you getting into this field just because its the cool thing to do, or you think it will make your rich and fancy and instafamous is a BAD idea. Please don't let the internet tell your worth can not exceed past the size of your waist. You are so much more than a body that the world gets to mold and shape as per its needs.

Sex work comes from a place of need. Yes while we are doing it, we find a way to own it and be damn proud of who we are but like all jobs it has risks. You know what you risk here:

Developing severe body image and esteem issues.
Having an empty, hard to explain resume so you may never get to switch careers.
Abusive or empty relationships. due to the men who try to lure you in, or the mental health issues that end up haunting us and influencing who we choose.
Missing out on your YOUTH. While other girls were giving exams in the morning, and chilling with friends at night, I would be working out. and prepping in the morning, and grinding against a sleazy old man's leg in a booth, or shaking my butt for a video so someone could throw a couple dollars my way.
Missing out on EDUCATION. While I was doing my sex work, I was also in a top twenty school as a psych student. I ruined it and flunked. They tell you they can manage it all? THAT IS RARE. HARDLY ANYONE CAN. You will miss out critical life stages that would ensure a stable future.
Forgetting how to human. You will never feel enough. You will rely on the praise of others so much that you will worthless without it. You will have seen so much of the darkness of men (and women) that you will never be able to trust again.
You will always want fast, big money. You won't be able to appreciate an average job or the long term oppurtunities because regardless of what millionaire bestowed his attention upon you, what purses you have, who follows you...your first non-sex work job will never make you enough to just fling out cash for large impulse buys and therefore, you will always want to go back, even when you longer can.
Which brings me to my LAST point:
Sex work has no job security. You expire, simple as that. You will age out one day, and it will be sooner than you think. The people you see flashing their lives on Instagram and talking about their ONLYFANS are the 0.09 %. Lots of them are under crippling debt, they have had to stick it through abuse and trauma, beg, grovel, get harassed, empty themselves out and do what anyone asked them to, just to get to that point. They will enjoy that fame for some years at best, and that will be it. There is no 'prisonbUNNyXXX^^' who ends up being a prominent Tesla shareholder just because her OnlyFans blew up.
Please. Listen to someone who did what you did. Put all that energy and drive into a different goal. Let the same passion guide you. It will be so much better.

I did that. One day, I packed my bags, threw away my phone and moved. I started college again. I learned to love, I had a daughter, I got a job that did not require me to be naked. I am almost done with my mathematics degree now, I am learning how to program, and I am teaching my daughter every day just how strong and beautiful she is. Please, you do not have to take up the wounds I did. They still haunt me and if you ask me now, all the red bottoms and Prada on Earth does not make this damage worth it.
