I've always been a fan of the term "gird up your loins" as opposed to "man up." It's gender neutral and usually conveys the same thing, without conveying the whole men-should-be-tough preconception

I agree that there may be truth here, but I'm also curious about how this is used regionally (because again, I agree with the overall sentiment). "Man up" is something I've heard said to both men and women, in the same way saying "you guys" is used to describe groups of men and women.

I know "you guys" can be a regional thing. Where you live, is "man up" something that would be told to both men and women?

Edit- thinking more about it, what about other masculine-inferred phrases like "grow a pair", "grow some huevos" (now I'm showing my region), etc. I hear these used equally for both genders, though they obviously imply masculinity = boldness, strength, courage, etc. How are phrases like these used in other regions?

Edit- Again, I'm NOT saying the implication of the post isn't accurate or that these phrases are okay to use, even if used for both genders. I'm just wondering if they're used similarly in other places.

Yes. And it's not just the statement itself that is so wrong-its the fact that the context means that to make any equivalent comment about women would lead to utter hysteria and a man could LITERALLY lose their entire career over it.

Its an example of how unbalanced and unequal and overly powerful women have become when just a few words can cost a man his career, whilst there's literally nothing a woman could say that would do the same.

But what we fail to see is that the bottom 20% of earners are primarily men as well as the top 20% of earners being primarily men. So, Man Up and accept your fate if you're an idiot. You do not have high earner potential, therefore you will make up the majority of low income earners... Why??? It could be because most times, women who would earn such low wages simply aren't working, while someone else is Manning Up for them, and working a double shift while they stay home and don't hold a job for various reasons, such as raising children, or being unable to work for whatever reason, sickness, laziness... whatever. more women simply do not work than men, and are cared for by someone who is currently Manning Up.

Man Up for the good of society, because feminism demands it, and equal opportunity already exists, but what they are seeking now is equity, and without plenty of manning up, we cannot make sure there is enough to spread equally among the masses and provide for all.

Sure, you should be able to decompress. Keeping everything bottled inside forever probably isn't the best idea (there are studies that both agree and disagree with this). But there is merit to being able to quit your whining and bitching and just do what you need to do.

Being able to step up to the plate is a traditionally masculine role, but it is a positive one. Telling people it's okay to give up is going to cause people who might have otherwise succeeded to, you guessed it, give up.

Obviously you should pick your own battles. Knowing when stepping up is worth it is as important as being able to step up in the first place. But when you know a goal is worth the sacrifice, being able to put your emotions aside and do what needs to be done makes you a hero in your own story.

Male disposability is something we talk about a lot here, and it ties in with this topic. I think what we need to keep in mind as 21st century men is that manning up isn't necessarily a bad thing, but some people will use our by-any-means-necessary attitude against us. They will tell you to "man up and pay your child support" when the bill is impossible to cover and you have no visitation. They will tell you to "man up and support your wife" who doesn't have a job and treats you like crap.

The bottom line is that being able to man up is a good thing. It's a tool in your toolbelt. Just don't let people take advantage of you because you're willing to sacrifice your well-being to reach a goal.

One is outdated and unnecessarily sexist, and the other is simply a way of telling a man to act like what he is, rather than a simpering, whiny, useless parasite. Men are hardwired for action, not for emotions or dithering. Go ahead and be in touch with your inner feelings if you want, but know that if you are ever in a crisis, you will suffer for it.

Men and women are not the same, never have been, and never will be. Men and women should, in almost all things, be given equal opportunities. Men and women should never be given equal outcomes.

I don't think they are equivalent at all. "Man up" is encouraging positive male traits like strength and perseverance. "Stay in the kitchen" is implying negative feminine traits like submissiveness and obedience.

A closer parallel to "man up" would be "a woman's touch" which implies positive traits such as carefullness and attention to detail.

I understand that "man up" can sometimes be used negatively as a dismissive term in regards to male emotions, but I still feel it is more often used for encouragement. Where as "stay in the kitchen" only has a negative connotation.
