Damn I loved that movie when I was little.

Not to sound like a SRSser, but it was nice to have a Disney movie where the main character was a woman but wasn't (WASN'T) trying to get married to some "prince charming" type guy. Saving China ftw.

Ironically that song in the film is animated with shots of Mulan overcoming gender stereotypes demonstrating that women can aspire to the same 'masculine' values portrayed.

When was Mulan released? Its interesting now that I think about it in that Mulan did bring to light in a small way some men's rights issues. Such as mandatory military service and the like. How society expects certain things out of men that they don't out of women.

In the same turn in the first part of the movie they delve into the issues Mulan has with living up to the stereotypes of being a young woman in that she had to deal with being dressed up and paraded around like a piece of meat. Interesting in that women largely aren't forced into marriage from the purpose of their family's honor/financial gain anymore. At least in most first world countries anyway. And yet men still have selective service to register for.

Rather forward thinking for a Disney movie made what 10 or so years ago? I had not thought about it in that light before now. It was such a good movie I didn't notice the obvious commentary about breaking out of traditional gender roles. That sours ridiculous given the plot of the movie but they did a good job of making it about Mulan trying to save her father/china rather than about being how much men/woman have things tough. Props to Disney on this one.
