Exactly what I do.
Walk up next to her and ask her politely to move it. If she does no problems. If she does not i have no problem taking my cane and pushing her bag on the floor and sitting down.
Only happened once. The vast majority of people are very kind. And having a cane kind of beats Vagina in the hierarchy of identity politics.

Really? Me and my walking stick often lose out to shopping bags. Never one bag. Much better to have three or four almost empty bags so everyone can see where you went shopping.

In my experience when I asked someone to move their bag when I want a seat they almost always move it without a question
[–]RedForman- 16 points17 points18 points 9 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
Thats the problem. Nobody wants to talk to another person. They want to assume you know what they want and know when to move your stuff for them. Like you i just ask.
[–]cosmicsans 12 points13 points14 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I mean if I have my backpack on and I take it off I'll have it in my lap until the bus starts moving, then I'll move it into the seat next to me, but then every time more people get on I'll move it back on my lap. Nobody wants to sit next to me? Backpack gets sit down, otherwise I move it before anyone has to talk to me.

[–]DarkLorde117 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]cosmicsans 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
[–]Mr_MRAnarchist 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Common courtesy is not that common. It's not hard to figured out that your bag is taking a spot that a person could be sitting in. If the bus/ train/ subway/ whatever is full, move your fucking bag. If there are lots of seats, don't.
[–]Jex117 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I've had the opposite experience. The only times I've had to ask someone to move their bag was when they already should've moved it. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see the bus filling up - it just takes a glance to see that you have the only empty seat left on a bus full of standing passengers.
Yet even still, every time I've had to ask, they made a point of putting their headphones in, cranking up the tunes, and gluing their face to the window.
After being ignored enough times, I began just sliding their bag over towards them a bit, then sitting on the edge of the seat - they pull their bag off, and I sit fully in the seat.
[–]TigerRaiders 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
If someone is manapreading and it's the last seat, I'll say excuse me. If they don't move I'll just squish my way in. I've learned that if someone refuses to move bc they are assholes, well, I can be an even bigger asshole and make room. They get all pissy but fuck em, what are they going to do especially over a seat. However, if the person is big and scary no way

A few nights ago I watched with vicious satisfaction as a fellow commuter 'accidentally' swiftly kicked a handbag that had been sitting in the aisle. I smiled like the asshole I am, enjoying her panicked scramble to retrieve it. If it had been out of the way in her lap, it would have been harder to punt.

1 of your balls didn't drop mate.
Nah, if 1 of his balls didn't drop he wouldn't have 2 balls in his sack. He'd have one in his sack, and one tucked up in between his pelvis & penis.
Most guys naturally have one that hangs slightly lower than the other.

Nah, if 1 of his balls didn't drop he wouldn't have 2 balls in his sack
I didn't say undescended. I said one of his balls didn't drop. an undescended testicle is a condition where an infants balls are inside the body rather than scrotum.
when you hit puberty your balls "drop" ... they were already descended prior to this. descended means not inside your body.

my dick doesn't like being squished. If I want to close my legs completely I have to reach straight into my crotch and scoop up my genitals over my thighs. Honestly after typing that out I think that's my new response to any accusation of manspreading.
Just deliberately, and slowly, reach down and arrange yourself into position to close your legs comfortably, while making eye contact.
[–]Liquid_Meat 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]Jex117 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I have to reach straight into my crotch and scoop up my genitals over my thighs.
This is honestly why I don't mind keeping my knees closed - I don't scoop them forward by hand, I've got this method of sitting down where my junk neatly tucks itself in the front when I sit, rather than getting squished between my thighs.
Kinda like that side-step maneuver to get the sticky nutsack off the side of your leg, without grabbing your junk in public.
[–]Saerain 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago* (8 children) | Copy Link
Can't vary that much, though. I've been thinking more a difference in mostly thigh girth. And maybe underwear? I mean, when mine can't fit between my legs, they're just sitting above with the rest.
[–]counterfitfake6 points 9 years ago [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link
Thigh girth is a large factor here.

[–]OnyxPhoenix 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I think it's just anatomy. I'm a very skinny dude and my thighs don't actually touch when I close my legs because my knee bone sticks out more. Still I have to physically hold my legs closed when I sit, they naturally sit apart.
[–]Jex117 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
My sister-in-law used to be anti-manspreading. After she posted some huffpo article on her twitter I showed her how this works for guys.
We simply can't cross at the knee. I can cross one foot over the other knee, but I can't cross one knee over the other. Women casually rest one knee over the other, but I have to forcefully pull one leg over the other, then hold my knee there, just to mimic the pose.
I loved that moment of realization. The real cracker was when I showed that she could rest one knee directly on top of the other, whereas I couldn't get the back of one knee to touch the front of the other knee. They just don't fit.
[–]dude21862004 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I can do all of those things. It's just not particularly comfortable. Also, I can only do it by crossing my right leg over my left, and there's a definite pop somewhere in my hip depending on the angle. Doesn't hurt.
[–]Liquid_Meat 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Can't vary that much, though.
why not? there are people with little tiny micropenises and dude's walking around packing subway sandwiches.
that tells me theres a lot of variation in genital size.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
What makes you say that? I've got fricking elephant testicles. I have to sit with my legs spread or I'm in pain (not significant pain... but still pain). I generally sit with one ankle on the other knee.
[–]Ellen_Kapow 11 points12 points13 points 9 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

[–]Revoran 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I was curious so consciously tried it out. When I sit with closed legs it just feels wrong in the hip region (like I have to actively press my legs together to hold the position), nothing to do with balls, or at least it's not the primary factor.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It's also called birthing hips, hips designed to produce a baby. Because we don't have that, women like to shit on men because we can't handle it. No shit, we weren't designed structurally to handle birthing even if we had a vagina. There's more to male/female differences than a dick and vagina.
And balls.
[–]Spurnout 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It's both. I have giant sweaty balls that swing high and low. But....the sweat gets to me sometimes. Ever seen those "games" where you put on a giant velcro suit and jump onto a wall. It's like that with my balls, only each one latches onto its own side so it can become very painful to peel them away so I not only manspread but I also walk like that too.
[–]ExpendableOne 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
It's both, really. I think a lot of people over state the balls argument because "durr, I have the manliest of balls and they need room because they are so massive!" or "durr, my boyfriend has the manliest of balls and they need room because they are so massive!". But, really, it's not even about size. Testicles are just extremely sensitive to temperature. They are constantly shifting up and down to regulate temperature. Confining them will make it uncomfortable because not only are you adding additional body heat directly to the testicles but you are preventing your balls from moving away from your body as well.

Second wave feminism was about rejecting women's responsibilities to society.
Third wave feminism is about increasing men's responsibility towards women.
None of them were an equality movement.
[–]darkapplepolisher 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I've thought about the use of terminology. You know how feminism is what it didn't used to be. The same thing happened to the term 'liberalism', and as a result, some people identify as "classical liberals". I argue that the same ought to be done for "classical feminism".

[–]girlwriteswhat 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I actually saw an article about this on a feminist website. Written by a feminist. She went way into the details of sex differences in the hips/pelvis, complete with diagrams.
She also, if I recall correctly, talked about the differences in leg length of bus passengers, and how the seats are a compromise between the averages of men, women and children (with women right in the middle, dontcha know), so the seat heights will naturally accommodate more women than men. And she mentioned center of gravity being higher in men than in women. When you combine that with the narrower pelvis and seats that would put your knees higher than your waist, you're going to need to stabilize yourself. (I have long legs, broad shoulders/big boobs and a small butt, and have a hell of a time if I'm sitting sideways on the bus.)
She opened the article by saying she knew it wouldn't be popular, but she wanted to share her understanding of anatomy so that maybe feminist women would be less hostile about manspreading.
The comment section was a nightmare. Dozens of comments dismissing her arguments as, "You're so full of shit! It's not about anatomy, it's about patriarchal dominance! Stop apologizing for asshole men!"
Then someone posted a gif of Kevin Spacey from House of Cards looking cynically into the camera in a "breaking the fourth wall" "bitch, please" moment, and someone commented that Kevin Spacey is SO HOT! and then the conversation devolved into a discussion about how awesome House of Cards and other HBO/Netflix/Showtime series are and which of the lead actors they'd want to fuck.
It was surreal.
[–]Jex117 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Yeah, I've also heard the leg length & balancing point brought up, but not in any articles on the subject; just from reddit comments. I'm 5'10 with a blue collar physique, so the seats aren't terribly small for me, but I've seen how some of my lanky buddies struggle on the bus. Knees jammed against the seat in front of them, awkwardly trying to keep their clown shoes out of the aisle, swaying uncontrollably with the movements of the bus.
Realistically though it would cost a fortune to retrofit public transportation to better accommodate men - and in doing so, reducing the overall seating available. Men can suck it up and tough it out - but I think we can maybe cut back on some of the manspreading hate.
[–]girlwriteswhat 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Agreed. The seat heights probably are the best compromise between users in terms of how many people they'll accommodate.
The "manspreading" campaigns need to stop, though, and feminists need to realize that it's not about asserting patriarchal dominance over public spaces and keeping women in their place.
Incidentally, I love how they constantly imply that we're conspiracy theorists when they come up with bullshit like manspreading.
[+][deleted] -42 points-41 points-40 points 9 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link
So what, it isn't so vastly different that it is difficult to keep your legs relatively straight. If you saw someone taking up two seats you'd think they were a dickhead; a commenter above has moaned about people putting their bag on a seat for instance. But you can go out of your way to justify taking up 3 people's leg space.
Just got to grow up and accept that being asked to be a bit more polite on public transport isn't women trying to take our rights away.
[–]BossRedRanger 34 points35 points36 points 9 years ago* (6 children) | Copy Link
Do some men spread full eagle when they sit down? Yes. That's an asshole move just like putting a bag in a seat on crowded transport. But normal, men who are not assholes have a biological need to sit without crushing their genitals. Trust me, men hate the eagle spread as much as women. But it's a dammed shame that the rest of us get ostracized for the actions of a few assholes.
[+][deleted] -38 points-37 points-36 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
But normal, men who are not assholes have a biological need to sit without crushing their genitals
I mean, that just isn't true is it. everyone here saying 'crushing', 'in a vice', etc. is just rubbish unless you are a pro athlete with thighs of steel or balls the size of tennis balls. Just sit a bit more carefully, its not rocket science. Also I am a man and the whole thing pisses me off. You love rubbing your thighs up against another passenger or fighting for leg space because you both can't just take a second to not sit on your own genitals.
[–]BossRedRanger 31 points32 points33 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
You keep focusing on extremes as examples of normality. Biologically speaking, a man's hips are shaped differently than a woman's. Our sitting positions are naturally different. Then I have external genitalia that can cause discomfort if I unnaturally squeeze my legs together.
A natural leg gap will be approximately as wide as a man's shoulders. That's reasonable. Or are you taking the ridiculous stance that because men also tend to have broader shoulders, that they should distort their arms to save you space?
You're being ridiculous.
[+][deleted] -29 points-28 points-27 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
you've not addressed any of my points, because you know it's a dick move, but you don't want to stop doing it.
re:shoulders, again, you're moving the conversation away from the issue because you don't want to accept the reality, that taking people's space with your legs means you're an asshole, but you don't want to stop, because, reasons.
Men's hips are not so different from womens that you can't hold your legs together for a 30 min bus ride. Also, that only 25% of men do it, suggest you are wrong on that front also.
[–]BossRedRanger 15 points16 points17 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Your points make no sense. You're pointing out extremes. I HATE touching anyone in public. And I honestly only run into "manspreading" issues when some assholes decides he wants to spread eagle in a seat. Normal men don't do that shit and you know it. I have never been in a situation where I would need to squeeze my bait and tackle because I simply choose not to do so. I would stand up given the option.
I wouldn't even know how to get into these situations that you seem to deal with regularly.
Again, you're being absolutely ridiculous.

Right... Sorry if I don't believe this for a second. /r/badmensanatomy up in here.
Edit: I'm a man. I can sit with my legs crossed just fine. I absolutely don't have to keep my legs open or my knees apart, for any reason, comfort or otherwise.
Can we abandon this pointless nonsense? Let's focus on the bags on chairs. That actually holds some water, unlike whatever this fake biology is.
If your reaction to feminists complaining about manspreading is to try to justify it with fake science, insist that it's somehow necessary for men to sit that way, or really to react to it in any way at all, you're probably not helping the movement. I don't know why anyone thinks thats a good idea.

Takes about 5 seconds to google it yourself. Women have a wider hip structure than men, to accommodate for the birth canal - as a result, they have a wider Q-Angle.
[+]g_squidman -28 points-27 points-26 points 9 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

[–]Jex117 16 points17 points18 points 9 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
Again, I'm not sure the relevance of this statement. Again, google "q-angle." There's a lot of literature from physiotherapists who rely on it to diagnose and treat a few different knee problems, and athletic clinics that use biometrics like the q-angle to boost their athletes performance.
[–]g_squidman-7 points 9 years ago* [recovered] (7 children) | Copy Link
I don't have to Google it to prove that the q-angle is not preventing me from closing my legs. I'm not trying to deny that it exists, only that it has any relevance to man-spreading.
There. I Googled it. I have a q angle. I closed my legs. Clearly, the q angle does not prevent people from closing their legs.
Edit: if you want to talk about physiology though, try turning your feet more toward each other.

No one is saying they can't.

who actually can't close their legs
Nobody said we "can't".
I, too, can make up arguments in my head and then debunk them. But that wouldn't make me correct.
[–]g_squidman 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Then stop complaining? Or what are you saying? It's too uncomfortable to close your legs? It's the same difference.
[–]unbuttoned 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
No one is saying that men can't close their legs. Only that due to the anatomical structure of our hips, that an open-leg sitting position is a more natural and comfortable for males.
In contrast, the larger angle between the hip joint and the knee joint in women naturally encourages a crossed or closed-kneed sitting position.
Men are of course able to close and cross their legs, but it is a less natural position which in general requires more effort.
This is not to excuse those obnoxious people on the bus who are taking up more space just to do it, or to be selfish, only to say that most of the time, when men are seated with a wide-leg stance, it has nothing to do with power structures and everything to do with comfort.
In any case, a simple "excuse me" is the solution to the problem in nearly all cases.
[–]OnyxPhoenix 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Dude your evidence is based on a sample of 1, i.e. you.
Clearly, based on the fact this is even an issue, most men find it much more comfortable and natural to sit with their legs apart.
[–]g_squidman 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
A sample size of one is all it takes to disprove a hypothesis. This isn't stats class, this is science. You have a point, but then people should try explaining it with claims of biology. This is repeatable.
[–]MassEffectOfTheWild 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]hosford42 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
That's funny. As I read this, my legs were spread as wide as the seat would allow because it's physically uncomfortable to sit any other way. It's for both reasons that I've seen given on this thread. So tell me, does your comfort when crossing your legs somehow invalidate mine and other men's discomfort with the same? I don't see how it could, but unless it does, the whole basis for your argument falls apart.
[+][deleted] -13 points-12 points-11 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
If this is true (which I doubt it is, as a man), you men's rights folks are doing a truly shitty job of communicating this fact in a way that people engage with. Must try harder.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Race, gay and women rights activists were all victims by a regular persons definition at some point. They all had better communications strategies and better communicators working for them before they made any progress. Who is the charismatic leader of the men's rights movement?
There's a number of them, but you might not recognize any of them, because they don't get any air time on the major networks, nor do they get a platform within the U.N, nor do they have Whitehouse credentials - as is the case with many prominent feminist leaders.
You're posing a false comparison. Feminism has sponsorship from the state; Mens Rights groups are routinely shutdown.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You are not making good comparisons. Men's rights is in its early stages. When race, gay and women's rights were at this stage they also didn't have access to media or politics, but they DID have reasonable and charismatic leaders. If men's rights has this, name them.
[+][deleted] -12 points-11 points-10 points 9 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
Why would this make you spread your legs farther apart?
I agree that the idea of manspreading is ridiculous, but this seems like a lot of pseudoscience.
[–]Aeponix 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
Look at the knees in the diagram. There's more space between the thighs at the crotch, which allows for the legs to come together more easily at the knees for women. On men, there's less space between the thighs, causing the legs to run more parallel, and a little wider stance depending on thigh size and potential to crush testicles.
[+][deleted] -8 points-7 points-6 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Source? Like I said, drawing layman's conclusions off of a diagram like this isn't really science.
[–]SaiHottari 12 points13 points14 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Here is a study that comprehensively looks at the natural seating posture for males vs female and how that is effected by anatomical differences.
This shows the bear bones differences between the sexes' hip bones. As you can see, men have a much narrower hip bone which places the legs closer together. Add in a pair of nuts that really don't like pressure and it should be no surprise men don't like sitting with their knees together.

It's about the amount of space in the triangle created by the hip bone and the two femurs. Women have a larger area in that triangle. So a man of the same build as the woman will have to have his knees farther apart to fit the same amount of stuff in that area.

As an alternative to this look at elbows. If a person turns their arms and hands face up and pushes them together, womens arms join together at the elbow (they kind of kink at the elbow so their arms aren't straight) whereas mens are straight and their elbows do not touch.
Once you can see the physical difference in arms it is easier to understand why men cannot comfortably force their knees together while sitting as it hurts at the hip.
Women of course cannot understand this but some of them don't seem to have have any difficulty femsplaining to us how we should sit.

Well no one should take anything seriously, especially things perpetuated by the media. The whole concept of having a term to define a belief systems is flawed. Just treat humans as equal humans. That's it. Everything should be a case-by-case basis. Most of the today's "big issues" are completely human-made. I think I would be okay with the idea that nothing "man-made" should ever be taken seriously.
[–]BroaxXx 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I think I would be okay with the idea that nothing "man-made" should ever be taken seriously.
I'm not sure I follow you... It appears you're saying that everything (murder, pedophilia, torture, theft, etc) shouldn't be outlawed and instead judged on a case-by-case basis.
If that's what you're suggesting keep in mind that not only would it clog the judicial system with trials that would go on for a dozen years but it would also give way for complete injustice as someone would receive a harsh sentence for a crime and another person would receive a slap on the wrist based on the judge's mood, profile of the accused or other random factors.
Somethings warrant some attention even if they are fabricated, like the wage gap. Even though the wage gap is demonstrably non existent we only know that because someone raised the question and other people looked into. Still some of the differences in income might be explained by factors that can be adjusted (like upbringing differences between boys and girls.) and that in it by itself is enough to make it worth raising "man-made" questions. Even if something turns out to be false it's probably worth not ignoring... Unless we're talking about fart rape, of course...

[–]Jobe111 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Exactly. When I said case-by-case basis I meant, for example, if someone says "I'm a feminist". I really don't know what that means because a lot of people have different ideas about what that means. In a similar way, the american flag means nothing to me on it's own because it's been used for so many different things and everyone has varying views on what it means for them. Man-made symbols, "isms", etc are just shortcuts for representing ideologies and too often seem to replace an actual exchange of ideas and opinions. I think I'm falling into a philosophical rant.
being a dick leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.
Unfortunately many of these insane beliefs have laws, money, and people in important positions supporting them.
[+][deleted] -9 points-8 points-7 points 9 years ago (30 children) | Copy Link
Why though? It's something everyone has to deal with, that mostly men do. it's annoying. Why shouldn't those people be asked to stop?
I actually think it is a perfect example of how the mens rights movement has lost its way. 'manspreading' (although perhaps an unnecessarily provocative name) clearly happens, clearly is mainly done by men, clearly is antisocial, and would take so little effort for most people to stop; maybe they didn't even realise, or didn't realise people were annoyed by it. But there it is. It is such a clear-cut issue. If the mens rights movement was about equality, then this is a perfect example of where people should be like, 'oh yeah, shit sorry I didn't realise it pissed you off but now you mention it, yeah, I do always take up 2 other people's leg room, that's really annoying'. And then focus on actual issues of mens rights like mental health and childcare etc.
But instead, all you lot here are just using it as a stick to beat 'feminists' and fighting as if it was them stripping you of some right.
[–]BroaxXx 14 points15 points16 points 9 years ago (25 children) | Copy Link
That's exactly the problem. If it bothers you, just ask!
I "manspread" because it's way more comfortable. If there is enough seating for everyone I'll do it without a second thought. If I'm distracted and for some reason am bothering you just say "excuse me, would you mind giving me some room" to which I'll reply "oh, I'm so sorry! I didn't notice!".
The problem with manspreading as a concept is that it assumes that men are assholes that do this to assert dominance or some shit like that. Most men who do that are just inconsiderate or distracted. Just ask them nicely as you would ask any other human being anything and I'm sure they'll oblige.
I use this stick to beat feminists because it shows how they're trying to create false divides to demonize all men and fight for superfluous things instead of fighting for real issued affecting women. Like FGM on first world countries, sex traffic, etc.
Manspreading is basically a parody of what feminism has become, no sane man would complain about closing his legs if he's bothering you... And if he does, the problem is not that he's a man but rather that he's an asshole.
[+][deleted] -11 points-10 points-9 points 9 years ago (24 children) | Copy Link
Why should I have to ask? You know you're doing something which is antisocial, which annoys people. So when someone sits down, just move your legs. If I came onto a bus blasting music on my phone, you would rightly think I was a dick, I would be an asshole. And there have been campaigns to stop people doing that, because its an annoying thing to do. Just like taking up other people's space. There's a million other examples. Why should the public have to ask someone to stop being an asshole each time; if you know you're being anti-social, just don't do it.
They aren't trying to demonize all men, they are giving a vocabulary to talk about a problem, which even you accept exists.
Your backlash against a very reasonable request (not just from feminists, but from basically everyone except those men who manspread) shows the childishness of the mens rights movement. You're trying to make it a feminist vs men issue so you don't have to stop being an asshole; but in reality, it isn't a feminist issue at all. It's a majority of the public asking a minority of men (25% ish in one report in the NYtimes) to stop being anti-social on public transport.
[–]BroaxXx 14 points15 points16 points 9 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link
I don't know what your problem is. If someone is listening to music next to me (unless it's a group of ten that seem like they want to kick my ass) I'll kindly ask them to stop. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't...
Men spread their legs for a reason, they have a very sensitive part of their anatomy between their legs. Some guys can manage to feel comfortable closing their legs but for others it can be rather painful.
I myself rather stand than have to close my legs too much because it's very uncomfortable.
If you are so self-absorbed you can't grasp basic concepts of male anatomy there is very little I can do to further this discussion.
Since we're on about socially awkward requests, I would like to request that women stop bagspreading too... That'd be awesome...
[+][deleted] -7 points-6 points-5 points 9 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link
But why should you have to ask in the first place? You know it is a legitimate cause for public annoyance, but because you think it's done by spooky feminists, you have to be against it. That is basically 95% of the mens rights movement.
mate, only 25% of men do it, its not about anatomy.
stop making it out like its a mens rights issue. Its a minority of anti-social people vs the public issue.
[–]BroaxXx 16 points17 points18 points 9 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
But why should you have to ask in the first place?
I answered that before... Sometimes people get distracted. I can enter an empty subway cart and make myself comfortable and then starting browse reddit or youtube without noticing how the cart starts to get crowded.
If I notice a crowded subway I, like I said previously, would even rather stand than take a seat but sometimes people enter their own world inside their head and lose track of time and space around them. Why shouldn't you be able to ask me to move if I'm bothering you? Stop being so socially awkward... Geez...
Allegedly. Even if it's true different people have different anatomies. Some people experience some pains and aches that others don't, wtf are you trying to get at? It's almost as if you don't understand different men have different gonads...
Jesus fucking christ, you're a total fucking moron...

legitimate cause of public annoyance
It's not though? Most of the sane public don't give a shit about this because
1) it's only antisocial if you're affecting other people (like the person next to you. Not the feminist getting offended and blowing things way out of proportion because your balls needed some free space and the principles of it makes her announce this from the other side of your bus).
2) it's not a big issue at all to just ask someone to give them more space. Men will ask men to give them space if their legs are in the way. If you have a problem with asking, don't get offended. That's not their fault.
[–]BoudinEtouffee 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Misread your comment lol
[–]ratbacon 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Look, the other guy is being polite. It is physically uncomfortable/painful for men to sit in this way. Our legs just naturally fall apart when sitting and they have to be forced together with constant effort to sit with them together. This doesn't even take into account the difficulty when you have a sensitive sexual organ jostling for space in your pants between your legs.
This is not a hard concept to grasp. How entitled do you have to feel in order to demand half of the population sit in discomfort just so you don't feel offended?
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I am a man, and no it isn't, and as I've repeatedly pointed out, it's only 25% of men -- how is that a difficult concept to grasp?
population sit in discomfort just so you don't feel offended
the person next to the spreader is literally sitting in discomfort also, right? It isn't about being offended. Again, and again, you guys resort to bashing 'feminists' because you don't have an actual argument.
[–]TheFanne 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]ratbacon 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Well, I'm pretty sure your figure is drivel but lets run with it. Of the 7.5 billion people on the planet, you want 938 million people to sit in discomfort just so your feelings don't get hurt by some imaginary oppression.
It's still fucking bullshit either way.
Sorry that my physiology offends you.
You're a massive asshole, by the way.
[–]MyFingerPointeth 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Why though? It's something everyone has to deal with, that mostly men do. it's annoying.
See, this right here is what I personally find the most absurd about the manspreading piece. Feminists act like men are the only ones who do annoying and inconsiderate things when utilizing public spaces. I ride a subway everyday and in my opinion very few people actually sit in the manner described and of those that do I genuinely can't tell if it is more men than women doing it. I'm a guy, I don't personally sit that way, when I see other guys or girls doing it I think its annoying, feminists however transform this into some statement about a gender-based dynamic and the patriarchy and paint an image of women constantly fighting for seating space because all the men are taking up multiple seats worth of room....come on.
[–]Rambo1stBlood 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link
Of course there are bigger issues, but when I hear "mansplaining" or "manspreading" I can't help but point out how stupid both of those ideas are and how either of them should be a thing at all.
I definitely care way more about the real issues.
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I don't doubt you do. But look at this sub, loads of posts about false accusations, circumcision, mental health at a few hundred upvotes; and this at many thousand. Its frustrating.
as a man and a feminist I struggle with those terms. imo, in one sense it's useful to have a vocabulary to talk about an issue, e.g., something like 'manspreading' that is done by basically only men (a minority of men). But equally you don't want to unnecessarily piss people off or generalise to the point of it not being useful. I think it's always going to be a fine line. Especially when some people in both camps are quick to attack the other.
I say its frustrating because there should be so many cross overs between mens rights and feminism (genital mutilation, childcare, mental health etc.) but when people here can't accept that being in someone else's personal space is an anti-social thing for fear of agreeing with some feminists, what progress is going to be made? You could say the same with some feminists and some issues. But I feel like much more energy here is spent finding that crazy woman on twitter and taking her as an example of why all feminists are after men's rights than actually thinking about the issues in a constructive way.
Anyway, sorry you were the target of that semi-rant!
[–]Rambo1stBlood 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I can respect that. Personally I am not a feminist , but here is how I see it. I think its useless and wastes time to try to categorize a men taking up too much room into some kind of special group, rather than lumping them in with women who also take up too much space on the subway with a bag or literally in any other way.
Like, instead of "mansplaining" or "manspreading" it would be "All people who condescend while they explain things" or "any person taking too much room on the subway." Essentially it is just taking things that both genders do and trying to make them gender exclusive.
We definitely are on the same page though on the most important part of this- that there are other issues that deserve the spotlight more.

General rule of thumb, boys: If your knees are not beyond the length of your shoulders...you're not spreading your legs. Your shoulders are widest 2 points of articulation, hence the term "shoulder to shoulder". So if you're on a bus or train and you have within that space to spread. And if a bitch has an issue with it, invite her to sit on your lap.

[–]TigerRaiders -2 points-1 points0 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
If you are a bigger guy than needs more space then it's obvious you literally need to take up more space, that's reasonable. You're the exception to this. I'm referring to the men that do not need more space, they feel they are entitled to it. We all have to share the space and we all got to get along.

If I sit relaxed and natural, without tensing to close my legs, my knee caps are about 3-4" further out than my butt on either side. If I have to close them more, I'll have to strain to do so. It'll hurt eventually and I'll have to let them out again. I couldn't sit like that for half an hour.
Edit: For comparison, it's the same kind of strain as when you're doing wall squats, although not as intense.
[–]Ethanol_Based_Life 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Agreed. Touch your damn thighs. I don't agree with women making it a gender issue, but I also don't agree with this line of reasoning that it's an anatomy issue. Balls don't hang straight down from your perineum, they are to the front. They shouldn't even be between your thighs when you sit.

We get that there are some guys that go overboard with their legs at 110 degree angle. We know that's rude. The problem is that so many people get triggered by any spreading beyond parallel and call that manspreading. If the term was reserved for the rare outlandish occasion, it would still be dumb, but it wouldn't be as big of a deal because most of us have a little class in public.

Nor are women entitled to two seats because they have a purse.
You get one seat to sit in. That's how society works.

Never seen a man actually manage to take up two seats unless its a joke. This is how any man sits when in a crowded bus.
I mean to successfully take up two swats you have to just about doing a split, and that is uncomfortable at best. However, if you're on a mostly empty bus/train and there are 11ty empty seats then why does it matter how many seats you take up to begin with? It's often that I see these posts of "manspreading" and the guy is sitting on an empty bus/train with only the perpetually offended sitting across from him.
That, being said, you have women like this: who is on a crowded bus taking up no less than 3 seats while other people are forced to stand.
[–]Bardo5tatic -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
As I understand it, the term and complaints are aimed at people who do take up multiple seats in a crowded place. I've certainly seen it happen in bigger cities.
[–]ChaosOpen 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
And 99% of the time those complaints are about someone taking up multiple seats on an empty vehicle. I mean when you get on the bus with only one dude sitting there I very much doubt any rational person would be that upset. What were they hoping for? "Screw the dozen or so other seats, I got on this bus hoping to sit right next to some random stranger, but now that he is taking up multiple seats we can't cuddle like I wanted."
[–]Bardo5tatic -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

So all the guys who sit with crossed legs and don't take up two seats are specially capable of handling the annoyance of balls touching legs?
I agree a woman using their bad to claim an additional seat is as annoying as a guy who is so spread out in public seating that they're taking up two seats -- but that doesn't discount the annoyance and social shaming that manspreading merits, just that a woman equivalent term is justified, or some gender neutral umbrella term
[–]charbor 18 points19 points20 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Everybody's different. I have some days where I'm hot and sweaty and I'm not wearing my favorite underwear and can't stand to have my legs crossed, too uncomfortable on the nuts. Other days I'm totally fine. It's not fair to be so judgemental.

I see your point, and get that manspreading too often assumes the worst about guys
But at the same time I've see enough cases of guys taking up two seats with their legs spread while other people have to stand, which makes me sympathetic with the idea of manspreading
And still I've seen women with bags taking up seats, which seems effectively the same thing.
It seems like often the answer is shaming the offender in person, instead of spending time coming up with a vague term that just makes things harder. 🤔😔

Have you ever tried asking someone to move? I feel like all these people that complain about this shit do so because they are too scared to talk to people. If I see some dude take up two seats and I want to sit in one I'm going to ask him to move. Same if it was a lay taking up two seat with her bag.
[–]karebear9 37 points38 points39 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Sitting cross-legged isn't healthy. It can cause nerve and circulatory issues.
Depends on where my balls are the moment. Sometimes crossing my ankle over my knee is more comfortable (although never actually crossing my legs). Sometimes it's less comfortable. I'm not allowed to reach into my pants and adjust my balls in public, so I sit whichever way is comfortable at that time.
[–]bulletBS -4 points-3 points-2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'm sitting comfortably right now, my legs are not spread open as if I'm about to give birth, and I don't even know or care what my balls are doing. Can someone tell me if this means I have feminine hip structure? Or am I not a man because I'm not constantly assessing the position of my balls relative to my legs? Hope someone can clear this up for me.
[+]ee4m -80 points-79 points-78 points 9 years ago (41 children) | Copy Link
Sitting with legs wide can be a display of dominant body language.
So to deny that it ever is - is as dishonest as saying that men with a normal spread are displaying dominance.
[–]pigeon56 65 points66 points67 points 9 years ago (24 children) | Copy Link
Almost no one on a train or subway is displaying dominance. You are just looking for a dumb debate.
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link
You my friend have never been on the red line in Chicago south of Roosevelt.
[–][deleted] 13 points14 points15 points 9 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link
Please tell me about the intricate social structure that takes place on this "red line"
Is it named that due to the constant fights to the death over dominance?
[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 8 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link
Well, since you're the expert, I'll just let you continue being an ignorant twat. Also... kind of yes.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link
I was trying to be funny since i'm from the home of passive agressive bullshit.
But yeah, im such a fucking expert. The most excitement we can expect out of our public transportation is dirty looks and grumbling.
Excuse the fuck out of me for trying to ask questions in a joking way.
[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 8 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
Didn't mean to melt ya snowflake. I was talking about the red line in Chicago anywhere from 95th through about where the white Sox play you do run the risk of getting shot or robbed every time you get on
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
It's okay butternuts, no offense taken. Looks like you're a little too tightly wound from living in what's essentially a third world country.
You got pissy, i got pissy back. All you had to do was say "chicago" and i would've been on your level.
We cool now though? Can i hear some stories about the shit that goes down on the red line? I was genuinely interested but all i pictured was two half naked men bellowing at each other and then wrestling over the last empty seat.
'S all good bb. Yeah riding that train line to school from 65th as the only white boy was rough. I saw shootings, stabbings, I was robbed once. Weirdest thing that ever specifically happened was when I was up drinking in wrigleyville after a cubs game in 08 and fell asleep, going all the way down to 95th st. This was at like 3 am and this tiny old lady on a walker woke me up and said "baby what the fuck you doin down here. You get right up on that north train ya heard?" Then she proceeded to ride with me all the way back to my college stop at 35th cause this intimidatong ass blue hair thought my stop was too hot to get off on. All told she prolly saved my ads from getting shot behind getting home late.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Oh and they manspread all the time to keep people from sitting next to them and shit. Definitely was about intimidation to a certain extent
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Thanks bud good to know. It's a totally different environment up here around minneapolis.
Apparently the numbers aren't too dissimilar, according to statistics.. But i feel like people here are more reasonable.
Then again i'm poor as shit, and look it.. And i offer up whatever i've got on me to share. On my way back from a show i had a guy demand my wallet.. I showed him what i had in it, which was nothing (no cash no cards) and offered him half a pack of smokes and a joint to let me on my way.
Totally different environment, except supposedly people keep dropping dead from lead poisoning..

What feminists do is take people that are and conflate it with natural spread.
What the meme is saying is the reverse - that it never is.

I read the meme through several times, and never found the word 'never'. Please explain how the meme is saying what you claimed.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Well really it depends on how much you want to buy into body language as a study, and if we are going to police this particular aspect of body language, then we should police others too. Otherwise it is a form of indirect discrimination against men.
[+]ee4m -6 points-5 points-4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, I'm not saying we should police it the way feminists are.
We have all come across the type of asshole who does the Donald Trump hand shake and the type that will spread their legs as a display of dominance.
And plenty of men women who will not move out of the way on the street in order to dominate others and women that confuse domineering with assertive.
But feminists typically, have tarred natural spreading with this brush, and poor men are being harassed because of it.
I remember reading about the of mainly black and hispanic men that were arrested after getting a ticket for "man spreading"in New York sometime ago - 1500 or so.
This is feminists being useful idiots for the police state, imo.
You're an idiot.

Really wish the mods on here removed these comments. If I was on r/twoxchromosomes and they were trying to talk about she bagginpositivley and I said something negative, my comment would be removed instantly. They literally block people for hurt being active in subs they don't like. Also where did this bullshit "displaying power" come from? Who the actual fuck tries to assert dominance in public transportation. Abso-fucking-lutley no one. People spread out their legs to be comfortable. The argument of spread for power is like saying I recline my seat back to show that I have power over the person next to me. Fucking ridiculous.
[–]Coldbeam 14 points15 points16 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Censoring is not the right answer. If someone thinks something stupid, tell them why its stupid, don't just ban them. The whole reason free speech is such an important concept is because we all have stupid ideas, and need to learn from each other.

Agreed. I was banned from 2x purely cause I post here, the fascist cunt mods. I personally welcome anyone from anywhere, I can't see how we can further our causes if we can't accept all people and their arguments.

I often hide inside my house to impress upon the people in my community that they are inferior to me, and not worthy of my presence.
If you're not constantly, and agressively asserting dominance over every single creature (man or animal) that you ever cross paths with, you're not a real man!

2x became the overbearing shithole it is because of the rampant censorship they endorse and practice. Same with many political subs. It's a recipe for the degradation of quality in the subreddit.
[–]venezuela_yes 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Just because they do it doesn't mean it's the correct response. Quite the opposite in fact! Let their shitty arguments be a matter of public record.
[–]ElijahLynn -5 points-4 points-3 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
As a man, the excuse of manspreading is bullshit. Women don't believe this lame excuse, it is in the same category as "blue balls".
update: I also hate it when men feel the need to take up more room than necessary. Many just do it as a display of control. I have literally had men push their legs back on me when my leg was touching theirs. They were having an invisible battle with my leg just to assert their dominance. I also don't buy the whole Q angle bullshit either.
