Wow that was a breath of fresh air.

We know that interests are highly malleable. Female students become significantly more interested in science careers after having a teacher who discusses the problem of underrepresentation. And at Harvey Mudd College, computer science majors were around 10% women a decade ago. Today they’re 55%.

I looked into Harvey Mudd’s STEM admission numbers, and, sure enough, they admit women at 2.5x the rate as men. So, yeah, it’s selection bias.

I don’t blame them. All they have to do is cultivate a reputation as a place to go if you’re a woman interested in computer science, attract lots of female CS applicants, then make sure to admit all the CS-interested female applicants they get. In exchange, they get constant glowing praise from every newspaper in the country

Look. If I recruit only gingers, and I admit only gingers, I can get a 100% ginger CS program. That doesn’t mean I’ve proven that gingers are really more interested in CS than everyone else, and it was just discrimination holding them back. It means I’ve done what every single private school and college does anyway, all the time – finagle with admissions to make myself look good.

Yeah, I'm an alum from Harvey Mudd, and the author hits the nail right on the head. Interested and qualified women are a limited resource in CS programs. Our lovely president decided to do everything in her power to gobble them all up so she could wag her finger at all of those other "sexist" institutions who simply don't have the resources to have multiple faculty personally call every single female admit, or to offer special privileges. The women I went to school with were, on the whole, talented individuals doing good work. I harbor them no ill will and wish them the best; it's not their fault for making the best personal decision out of the options available to them. I would have done the same thing. Of course, it doesn't really demonstrate anything other than that a highly committed ideologue can dramatically change the demographic makeup of a subset of a subset of the population. But at least it gets her a shitton of press.

Harvey Mudd started turning toxic a few years ago, and the process culminated in classes getting cancelled because apparently coursework is racist, at a college that styles itself as being the "most difficult" in the country. The president essentially got devoured by the beast she created. A committed group of complainants managed to extract from her thousands of dollars that simply go to "affinity group advocacy organizations."

At least according to me, he approached the gender gap the right way and addressed the topic very well. I don't agree with you on the individualistic approach though. It would make more sense for him to claim the problems happen to men and open up the discussion to other men, who would hopefully agree, rather than focusing just on himself and coming off as selfish. Even if he did put it eloquently, it would strike me as odd. However, he would have taken a bullet nevertheless and would have been fired even if he wrote it in that way. (assumption here on out) He very well knew he was going to get fired, and that after getting fired, it would prove hs point. Now the fact that he valued this discussion over his job at Google, is probably why he took the fall. Now think for a moment... the exposure this would now get (because it is google after all) may be enough of a catalyst for more people to be aware of these issues. The controversy surrounding this issue will definitely get people to start discussing and thinking.

Great explanation and totally right. Despite this being common sense I've still seen feminists and other snowflakes creatively side step logic and invent ways of needing both equality and diversity at the same time. Usually they'll randomly start saying diversity actually means "unique experiences" or "unique perspectives" which can only come from certain groups and not white males.

So they're still equal but their "experiences" or "perspectives" are different than white males so they need them for diversity. They're ironically using separate but equal doctrines to justify their agendas. And as icing on the cake they're never able to explain how a woman's perspective might be occasionally more useful than a man's and but will call it outright sexism to say a man's perspective might occasionally be more useful than a woman's. It's all one giant mental pretzel.

If genders are quantitatively unequal, then they will necessarily yield different outcomes; thus there is diversity to be sought.
Therefore, you cannot simultaneously claim that the genders are equal, and seek diversity of them. Either claim 1 or 2 must be false.

No there's not, my mom was a feminist in the 60's 70's she's disgusted at what that word and movement has become and how it destroys the legacy of great women of her generation and generations past that fought against true injustice towards women who just wanted a chance to compete for a seat at the table and be treated fairly.

My mom believes that a woman should be able to be a firefighter if she can pass all the tests and beat out other men or women for the job as intended, she does not believe that standards should be lowered so that a job can be done poorly, that is OG feminism, and a noble pursuit.

IANAL but from my reading of CA emmployment law an employee can be fired for EITHER "good cause" i.e. the employee did something the State of California agreed is worthy of firing; or "no cause," essentially for no reason at all. That leaves a third category, of course, "cause" that the State of California does NOT agree is worthy of firing, i.e. is protected. As this employee was clearly fired for critiquing his company's policies internally, I'm pretty sure that it falls under the third category. Internally critiquing the company's policies is broadly protected, as long as the employee continues to follow those policies even while disagreeing with them.

And while he might have a black mark, he's also going to be a cause d'celebre in the anti-sjw circles forever. He can make a living giving talks and writing books.

There is such a stigma around any perceived sexism towards women in tech that companies will fire people they know did nothing wrong at the drop of a hat, just to avoid that label. Not doing so would hurt Google's brand and cost them a lot of money. As big as Google is, it has no experience fighting social justice extremists and in a fight where image is worth billions, it would be in a lot of trouble.

Google is becoming infested with people of this ideology with nothing to balance them out. This is going to hurt them in the long run as other companies are just going to hire the best people. A giant like google will take a long time to fall, but you can be sure it is coming. The extreme censoring/controlling of youtube content, 'councils for harassment of women' (not men though), this and I am sure lots more that we don't see are signs that the rot is slowly spreading.

As a woman who’s worked in academia and within STEM, I didn’t find the memo offensive or sexist in the least. I found it to be a well thought out document, asking for greater tolerance for differences in opinion, and treating people as individuals instead of based on group membership.

Hormone levels - including those of testosterone, progesterone, and estrogen - all impact your behavior and physical growth. I'm a male with long legs and wide hips (feminine), but also broad shoulders, a wide jaw, and a lot of hair (masculine). That's already three sliding scales.

Then you don't agree with at least one point in the article which is there are biological differences in gender.

Let's use your definition of gender referring to aspects of your personality. The article notes (and research supports) personality traits being different among the sexes. It argues a distribution (and the memo author specifically says not to look at just the averages) but there are definitely some traits more common to each gender regardless of culture or place of birth. So gender isn't entirely a construct but (at least in part) linked to biological sex.

Now you may agree with the author's point that the stereotypes are built on the averages. In reality, there's so much overlap among the two groups that you really can't tell anything meaningful about an individual by just their sex.

So you may also agree with the author's final conclusion which is we can't use an individual's sex to assume aspects of their personality.

Feminists have been attacking and smearing men for years, even decades. Every week there are hundreds of feminist articles published in the media, claiming men are all rapists, men are all domestic violence abusers, men are useless or even "over".

Feminists protest, sometimes violently, against men's rights talks, even talks about male suicide. Feminists have successfully blocked the establishment of men's issues groups on dozens of university campuses, likely causing a number of men to drop out of university or even commit suicide when a local men's group could have helped them.

Hell, feminists were too incoherent with hatred of men to even let screenings of The Red Pill movie proceed without tantrums, violent protests and petitions to shut them down.

Feminists show their contempt and loathing for men every single day. Feminists are the gender equivalent of the Westboro Baptist church protesting funerals for no more reason than to make a political statement.

Note that the reverse is not true at all. MRAs have done none of these things, yet feminists attack and smear MRAs constantly nonetheless. Clearly feminists don't need a reason to hate men.

Feminists and feminism completely deserve all the criticism directed at them. Because of the accumulation of their hate-driven actions over many years, they are not entitled to any respect at all.
