Gattaca had eugenics correct? We are currently in a dysgenic society with those who have lower IQ having more children. Some things like obesity actually are positive since it targets less intelligent humans, I would have to check but I assume the same for alcoholism and other self-destructive behavior. The middle class is dying and has been at least since 2007 and most likely longer. Men are being out-competed by women however another poster brought up bullshit jobs which seem to be a lot of what women are outcompeting men for(white-collar jobs that don't contribute any direct good or service). However in the U.S. and if a couple has two middle-class incomes think 40k and above so around 80k+ they can have children if they want it would just be less spending on other things which is probably a positive since consumerism is not only bad for people but the environment as well.

Since this is about millennials eh they are probably screwed but by how much who knows, a lot of them have college debt more women than men, at least half of the men are porn addicted, most unless they get a good white-collar job, valued trade, or something else will not be able to afford a host but some may inherit. Honestly speaking Covid killed a lot of fat and old people which was probably good, the current war in Ukraine for total deaths is amounting to little overall for both sides but we will see the count at the end. One positive is the absolute hate millennials seem to have for the political establishment but my guess is nothing worthwhile will come of it. I am kinda rambling at this point but to answer your question Millenials don't have it too bad it just seems that way with how interconnected we are nowadays. If we want to bring gender into this millennial men may be getting less sex, but the women are more depressed and more in debt so who knows who is winning there.

There are a few things to consider.

Milennials have had to deal with a "once in a lifetime" disruptive event every 8-10 years since childhood. Most of these events were way more disruptive than their later 20th century equivalents like a much longer recession, a 20 year war from an attack on New York City, or a global pandemic. Its hard to build a family when the world gets an upheval every time you get settled in.
Older generations are lasting longer and retiring later. Its hard to get a promotion when theres few people above you retiring. Some of them are also still there due to a bad economy but the end result is the same.
This is not getting better. Now that Gen Z is now increasingly adult things don't look like they'll improve.

We are probably bound for a crisis. Like an actual crisis, killing a large chunk of the human population.

Climate change, exploding diabetes and obesity, aging populations and low birthrates.

Right now supply of human lives exceed demand, like the era before the black death.

After the black death human workers became vastly scarcer, and as a result vastly more valuable.

If we hit another massive wave of death human workers will become valuable again, and as a result more valued.

On the female side, There is less incentive to pair bond with a tradtional provider and there is less incentive to accept trade-offs, settle with less than an ideal male. The social and financial safety net can easily supplant an average man in providership. And more women have self agency. Women are also bombared with images of ideal perfectly groomed, defined, and masculine men. Why settle for less ?why bare the children of what she percieves as an subpar man.

On the male side, there less incentive to pair bond with millennial women. The "tradtional" wife is too rare and therefore too competative for most average men. There is also less incentive because the female can blow up the marriage for simple dissatification and she has the safetynet to backend that decsion. Also why commit to one women when u can have children "for free" without the pressure of being a husband.

We are victims of our own sucesss. This is what happens when there is an abundance(or borrowed abduance) of resources and services that make life "easy". This inflation crises is us paying the mathematical piper for decades of decadence, which will force ppl back into more "traditional" roles at some point in the future.

In the US and in the world (it already exists in some places, and is growing in other's) tyranny and dictator rule is making a sweeping comeback. I want to preface my comments by saying I detest our politician's, don't affiliate with any party. I don't buy into any of their snake oil sales. The US is allegedly a Democracy, now that is in title only. The voice of the people is gone. Politicians are pathological liar's and the drones (people) just keep voting for them. The lies, corruption and deceit is so rampant and in your face, browbeaten people begin to think all of this is, "normal". I'm not a religious person by any stretch, but the handwriting is on the wall. Humans will be culpable for their own demise.

I haven’t actually looked it up but I’d genuinely Put money on it; The millennial generation probably has highest rate of being raised in single parent homes, took on most debt for college tuition, grew up as kids during the last depression, grew up in a world that was becoming infinitely more complicated in such a short span of time due to computers, etc

As a generation, millennials have had an unprecedented level of stress. Required to be more educated as a whole than any before us, required to make more money to afford the same basic necessities, due to the increase of mass surveillance they have had their past decisions be much more scrutinized and face new unique challenges that their parents, which may or may not have been in their lives, have very little experience with.

Growing up as a millennial and future generations, has less room for mistakes and severe fuck ups than any previous generation. Our parents and grandparents probably said and did things that would have ruined their lives many times over if born in this generation.

This is all new to everyone so to expect us to navigate it the same way our parents and previous generations did when their biggest worries as kids were things like seeing all their friends bikes at one house and feeling not invited or getting into fist fights or being home before street lights came on is a fucking joke.

Fuck any old shit who says they had it worse. They had it less convenient for sure, but we have it so many more layers of complexity with navigating the world and thriving in it.

Birth and marriage rates are down because the economic reasons for both of them have disappeared in the former case and diminished in the latter. That means we have never had it so good.

I’m in Generation Z, but my parents are from the Baby Boom generation. My grandparents were part of The Greatest Generation and the Silent Generation so I’ve grown up with Depression Era values. I don’t know what to think. I’m too different from most people my age. That being said, I think I want to adopt kids!

Baby boomers are the most coddled and protected generation. The only reason millennials are annoying is they complain, they complain because they weren’t afforded the level of comfort, convenience and protection they grew up with that their parents retain. They left college right into a depression and their first burden apart from rent was multiple bank bailouts to protect their parents real estate and pension splurges. What’s coming after millennials like a bunch of social media crazed but socially inept narcissists is even more frightening.

Millennials might be at the start of these trends, but Gen Z is in the thick of it with no other basis for comparison, and the effects won’t fully actualize until Generation Alpha, the children of Millennials.

Also there are good that comes with the bad. Information is easier than ever to obtain, and you can learn almost anything by researching on your own. Multiple market crashes were preceded by decade long bull runs capped by insane spikes that were ripe with opportunities to increase your wealth. In 2007 I turned my 60k in savings into almost 600k trading stocks in under 8 months at 25 years old, which gave me the capital I needed to start my own business a few years down the line. In the Covid years I was more conservative than when I was young, but my networth still tripled in one year. With globalization comes the opportunity to invest into almost anything and everything using just your phone.

And yeah I get it some people live paycheck to paycheck and/or have unavoidable expenses and never have the cash to invest. And yes ultimately what it means is that there are huge disparities between people who own assets and people who don’t. It’s actually not unlike the dating market in that sense. And as with dating, while there may be systemic issues, from an individual standpoint the best you can do is to improve the things that are within your control and go from there.

I think it's closest to a lost generation, people learn from the mistakes of the previous generations. It may continue for another generation but eventually a new equilibrium will be reached. The intersexual dialectic is eternal.

Dear heavens, I know being a doomer is fashionable in certain corners of the internet, but this whole thread feels ridiculous.

First, do you know how old 'millenials' actually are? It's a cohort, not a chic way of saying 'kids these days.' Most millenials are well into their 30s, and the average American millenial is married. It's not that 'marriage rates are going down" so much as age of marriage is rising (this is also in part why divorce rates are falling--marriages between older couples are less likely to end in divorce).

Now, is "extended adolescence" or whatever a thing? Sure, and there's many (mostly economic) reasons for that. But there's something else people may be forgetting. Everything starts making much more sense when you stop thinking of "childhood" and "adolescence" (and "adulthood" and "old age" for that matter) as simple numbers, and start thinking of them as percentages of the average person's lifespan.

Like, yes, in 1947, it was much more common for people to have a job by 19 and a mortgage for 22. They were also considered elderly at 60, and likely to die before 70. Remember, 50-year-marriages were considered kind of rare and a big deal even when most people married in their early 20s and did not divorce. Do the math.

I would say it’s the normal from here on out. These trends actually precede millennials and start with gen x (trends being: lower fertility, lower marriage rates, lower homeownership, lower income, lower ‘generational wealth’). Economically, I think it may just be that this has always been the norm, and the baby boomers were just the ‘once in every 250 years’ exceptionally lucky generation born in the right place (US/Western Europe) at the right time (post-WWII, invention of the transistor, long period of global peace/stability, lots of unions, affordable homes, low economic global competition, etc…). I feel like they were kind of born into an era that saw the culmination of previous generations’ hard work and good planning, and the boomers maybe dropped the ball a little? Didn’t pass the torch? I dunno, not like my generation is doing much to improve things for gen z. Don’t throw rocks when you live in a glass house, right?

Pretty much all parents of the kids I work with are from a mom/dad parenttal unit. Pretty sure the nationwide stats for single parents aren’t crazy high either.

Same with the birthrate. Its not that low, and the United States population is still growing. Relax.

Why would these things make a generation “lost”?

Thanks to technology and social progress women don’t have to end up as housewives cranking out crotch goblins three at a time and being completely dependent on a man for money and shelter.

Women were basically getting screwed for all of history. In some states women couldn’t even open a bank account without the authorization of their husband. And now for the first time, with platforms like YouTube, Etsy, onlyfans, women can make real money from the safety of their homes without needing shit from a man so of course they’re not going to be forced to marry some guy they’re not even attracted to and be a housewife who just raises kids and gets an allowance from her husband when they don’t have to anymore, and I can’t blame them.

Those days are over, welcome to the new normal.

It seems a lot like these trends are irreversible and permanent.

I very much doubt that, it will just take the collapse of the demographics and system that support it, which is already happening. Western society tried importing labour to stave off that collapse (and it's worked to an extent) but this also undermines the stability of the system.

A lot of pain and misery will be inflicted on the world because so many of the elements of the social system have been leveraged to sustain cosmopolitan urbanism and it's product.

I've recently become more concerned than ever that we actually have little understanding of what is happening with respect to gender dynamics. Social studies as well as collecting nuanced data at a national scale on these types of topics are inherently difficult. But PC culture and the overall politicization of these issues makes it even harder.

The manosphere has some interesting points and arguments that may be true to some extent, but it is far from clear how accurate they are. The same is true with many takes on the current mating and dating situation. I think people often combine anecdotal evidence with some empirical data that may be relatively accurate for a given demographic and locale and then project it nationally or civilizationally. We also tend to project current trends forward when they may in fact level off or reverse for reasons we haven't anticipated.

Some things are clear, though. The birth rate is a major problem. Fatherlessness, at least in its current form, also seems to be a problem. But we need to be very careful in assuming we have either the causation or the treatments figured out.

I for one will follow the traditional nuclear family, live a Godly life, be orthodox in nature and honour God. Even if that means marrying a woman from another country, working on myself or waiting for the right one to come around. We are living in bad times but I will persevere so help me God.

Honestly I hope gen Z will have it better than us because I have zero hope for me/our generation at this point.

I will do whatever to not constantly shit on them like we have been and hope they can at least enjoy a decent life.
