One common point of contention in many conversations that I see between men and women is when one side points out the double standards that the other side displays.

Some examples of double standards that some men have:

  • Wanting to only date women with low body counts, even though they themselves have very high body counts
    • Along the same vein: wanting to only date women who don't have hook-ups, even though they themselves have them
  • Wanting to only date women who are considerably more physically attractive than they are
  • Wanting to only date younger (20~25) women even though they are considerably older (let's say 35~40 in this case)
  • Wanting to only date fit women, even though they don't really care about their own physique (granted, this is rarer IMO, but it does happen)
  • Not wanting to date single moms, even though they are single fathers (probably rare as well, but I have seen it happen)

And some examples of double standards that some women have:

  • Wanting only guys to pay for dates, even though they may make the same amount of money
  • Wanting to only date guys who are professionally successful, even though they are not successful themselves (e.g. a student who doesn't date students, only guys with good jobs)
  • Wanting to only date guys who are taller than the average man, even though they are shorter than the average woman
  • Wanting to only date rich guys, even though they are not rich
  • Treating sex as banal with men they don't see as relationship material, treating sex as special when they meet a guy they want to have a LTR with, asking them to wait for sex (granted, something that can apply to both genders, but it is more commonly seen as negative when women do it)

Those are the ones that I think are most common, but maybe you can think of other ones that I've forgotten.

But anyway, the point of this thread is: are double standards like that intrinsically bad? Do you judge negatively people who want in a partner something that they themselves do not offer? Or is all in love fair?

My opinion is that it's all fine. As long as you're not hiding these double standards from your partner, if they're fine with it then why would I care?
