Someone posted a thread recently, asking the question "would you ever date someone who said they are a rape survivor?"

I and many other people said that they wouldn't. One of the top responses in the thread was this, with a score of around +20:

All the responses on this thread make me so happy. I'll be sure to mention my sexual abuse ASAP to ward off any assholes.

Rape is a horrible act, and it is deeply traumatic. Being victimised and violated in that way must be horrible. I'm lucky that I've never had to experience it, and I doubt I can really understand what it is like.

The thing is, that's precisely the reason I wouldn't date somebody who'd been through it. The reason it carries a similar penalty to murder is because of the damage it causes. Rape screws people up, and the damage is often deep and not obvious. I have the utmost sympathy for people who have been through that, but that doesn't mean I want to get involved with them.

Why does that make me an asshole?
