10 things you need to know about theft for white people:

  1. Keep your personal belongings at all times.

  2. If you see someone who might be a thief, report them immediately.

. . .

10 things you need to know about theft for black people:

  1. Be aware that pickpocketing can constitute larceny.

  2. Theft is punishable by jail, a fine, or both.

. . .

These are literally indistinguishable from the meme, and we should be e-mailing [email protected].

Edit: Gold?! Thank you so much, kind stranger!

Ding ding ding! We have a winner. The biggest way to tell if something is sexist is to put race to it. If the first card the OP posted said white women and the second card said black men, people would immediately see why it's wrong. (Hint: it's treating groups of people differently)

Someone in /r/law almost woke up when I suggested universities should also adjudicate attempted murder complaints. After all, they have a duty to keep their students safe.

Unfortunately the person asserted that yes universities should adjudicate a complaint of attempted murder.

It's subtle, but these people are missing the mark.

Interesting how the cops are called, code red triple 911, for any cannabis smoking on a campus, but alleged serial rape is ''we'll form a committee of people who haven't gotten degrees yet'', to kangaroo court the fuck out of things, without notifying police, or completely ignoring official police investigations.
To be fair, cops throw sexual assault evidence kits in closets, and don't give a fuck about them, in a majority of cases, many studies have shown. Feminists should join the police force if they want rape investigated properly. Form a women's student league of criminologists and do it for real, if that is your chosen focus in life. WTF?
Use the reddit detective group effort model, and build rapekit.com. A million women all internationally pitching in to examine evidence, modded by experienced sex crime attorneys. Hordes of people, nationwide, in a panic, and no simple plan like mine in place. 2XC and other subs could set this up on reddit. cricket cricket cricket.
I have zero knowledge of what feminists are doing to tackle the ignoring of rape kits, beyond being mad.
I do remember that hundreds were lynched for glancing at a white woman's ankles, usually orchestrated by the woman. ''Kill him for me. He's toxic''

[–]cuteman 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's the safe spaces are the priority folk.

College in the US is a time when the training wheels need to start coming off.

Many of the egregious events the last few years have been anomalies stemming from over compensating. Historical trends for violence of all types are down and getting lower.

So you have this environment where universities have pledged to end rape.

But that's not a goal you can accomplish. Universities don't commit rape, people do.

Kangaroo courts after the fact doesn't disincentivize rape it ensnares additional innocent people because the standard is lower and there none of the professional protections like a court of law, who, as people like to point out, routinely get it wrong. How many people do you think have gotten caught up in these cases nationally at this point?

[–]adelie42 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

I started doing a similar thing when people rant about "the rich". I substitute the word "jew" in my head. Typically the statements don't sound particularly original.

The oppressor/oppressed model is so blatantly toxic, I don't understand why it is so popular -- Somebody or some group is the victim and another person or group is the enemy.

Do people find this simplicity elegant? Sometimes it makes sense, but as an entire worldview for all social ills?

[–]Sparky400Hz 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Take a look at ingrouping and ingroup bias. It's exactly what you described and it's the reason for most racism/prejudice historically.

[–]scyth3s 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I don't see Jews buying my senators off to sabotage net neutrality, healthcare, and put the country into more wars... I see super rich people doing that.

Jews is a very non-like comparison to people rich enough to save money on taxes by spending millions on politics.

[–]adelie42 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

I think you underestimate what jews were accused of.

They were the bourgeoisie, according to propaganda, including the poor ones. The word bourgeoisie isn't used much today, but that's just semantics. It is the same rhetoric.

Also, as far as I can see, people with money control both sides of the debate, pro and con everything.

[–]scyth3s 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I think you underestimate what jews were accused of.

I don't think that matters here. We're not talking about 60 years ago. If someone is bribing my senator now, is not because they're Jewish, it's because of other aspects of their identity.

Also, as far as I can see, people with money control both sides of the debate, pro and con everything.

It seems like you're agreeing with me, but I'm honestly not sure I understand the full meaning of your post.

[–]adelie42 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sure, thank you for the opportunity to explain.

In my view, which is hopefully as open to change as I believe it to be, "buying a senator" is not as quid pro quo as it is made out to be by the media. Instead, there are a couple institutional issues in particular that have a corrupting influence:

  1. There are not very many senators. With ~350 million people, they are each roughly responsible for the voice of 3.5 million people. And not really just their voice, but their best interests. What people think they want can be discovered by polling, and what is in their best interest is simply more complicated. But ultimately it is going to come down to specific human advisors and their reports. Major corporations that employ a good portion of these 3.5 million people can "give insight" into their potential decisions. Ultimately, senators are entrusted with managing (in my view) an incomprehensibly big picture. Any simply answer trivializes the problem.

  2. People are elected by people. Not saying this is THE problem and that we need to do away with democracy, but maybe we should be a little more wary of what we are actually doing and how much power is transferred in that process, particularly considering the above. Campaigns are expensive and who makes it to the top will occur as a combination of economic (money) and political (bureaucratic) processes. I can't say anything nice about either of them. In the end, you need a lot of friends to make it to the top. "Pay to Play" is illegal, but people do support the candidate that is going to do what they want them to do. I am not convinced it is black and white.

So, to my analogy: People want exceedingly simple, and sometimes violent, solutions to exceedingly complex social problems.

Jews were labeled as non German; living in Germany, reaping certain pleasures of life and insulated from the hardsahips of everyone else. People thought they were collectively in control of a big picture they themselves had no influence over, and they wanted things to change.

vs

The Rich are labeled as non American; living in America, reaping certain pleasures of life and insulated from the hardsahips of everyone else. People see them as collectively in control of a big picture they themselves have no influence over, and they want things to change.

That is basically my thinking.

I'll add that I am confident that everyone wants the same thing, but what we argue about is the stragegy for geting those needs met.

I would enjoy further discussing, or sharing references supporting, any aspect of this.

[–]DrDarkMD 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Try substituting the word ‘Capitalist’ instead. The comparison you are trying to make, makes no sense.

[–]adelie42 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Anything works when it is really a mythical boogeyman. "Capitalist" works too as it was the mythical boogeyman of Marx Das Capital. Just because there was an attempt in the early 20th century to change the meaning to represent pro market ideas doesn't mean people don't continue to use it that way.

The point, as discussed further down the chain, is that empty rhetoric is easily identifiable by substituting loaded words or boogeymen with other words to reveal the content of the statement outside the emotional appeal.

Fuuck your comment is cringe.

[+]nuesuh -55 points-54 points-53 points 9 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link

Well, it's not wrong. It makes sense to distinguish between men, women, white and blacks. People are different and behave differently.

Fat, skinny. Tall and short. Dumb and smart. Seasoned and inexperienced.

It makes sense to discriminate between different groups of people and give them an appropriate treatment, or appropriate information.

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points17 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

While we're at it we should have people get paid different amounts then too

[–]nuesuh -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

ehh.. People do get paid different amounts. Stop two random people on the street and ask how much they're making. You're not going to get the same answer.

[–]uniden365 36 points37 points38 points 9 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

What??? All people's across all cultures are not perfectly equal?

That's a pretty slippery slope towards believing that men and women have equally important although distinctly different roles in society and the family.

[–]Taylor1391 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Believing that someone's role has been predetermined by what they are is incredibly wrong, no matter who the "someone" is. And let's not pretend that the roles were "equally important" traditionally. Making the world happen is a little higher on the importance scale than making a sandwich.

[–]Incident-Pit 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

And making the people happen that make stuff happen is more important still. come on buddy, you can't possibly have missed that.

[–]Taylor1391 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Oh, yeah, being coerced by societal norms and even forced by lack of contraceptive options to waste their life shitting out babies. So great. So important.

[–]Incident-Pit 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

So, you deny that the single biggest point of failure in any society is super important. Ok buddy you have converted me! I'm a believer... Where the koolaid at?

[–]Taylor1391 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Did you miss the part where that's all they did? There are plenty of mothers who actually accomplish something real with their lives. But you have to admit that traditionally, they did not.

[–]uniden365 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Motherhood is pretty much the single most important job a human can have. It's immensely important and honorable. You seem to be the one here who doesn't respect and appreciate the amazing role women have as mothers.

Statistically the home builder is happier than the career woman anyway.

[–]marauderp 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Did you miss the part where that's all they did?

You don't seem to have a very high opinion of the societal contributions mothers, and seem to be erasing all of the accomplishments of women throughout history besides "shitting out babies".

Are you, perhaps, a misogynist?

[–]uniden365 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

No, never predetermined. Obviously men and women should be equal under the law and free to make whatever choice suits them.

Men and women just naturally make different life decisions, and experience life in different ways.

Do you really think a man and a woman are exactly equal in every way? Because they're not. It's not evil to admit that. I'm not claiming anyone is superior to anyone else.

[–]Taylor1391 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Of course they're not exactly equal. If nothing else, their biology differs. I just don't think anyone should be encouraged to make a certain choice because of what they were born as. If they make that choice anyway I might think it's a little unfortunate, but it's not my place to interfere.

[–]nuesuh 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's not "wrong", it's how it is, stupid. Men and women are predetermined to different roles in society.

That's nature. It's how it is. It's not "fair" or "unfair". It's how it is.

Grow up

[–]nuesuh 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

This subreddit is pack full of feminists. And they're not gonna like you saying that.

For the record. If you believe that women should have the right to vote, or serve a combat role in the military, or work as a firefighter or police officer.. You're a feminist.

[–]uniden365 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

How did you get down voted, and I got upvoted, when I was pretty much agreeing with you???

[–]nuesuh 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Because women are emotional creatures, and this subreddit is full of effeminate men. "Rights" is a gay concept. Mens rights, womens rights, all bullshit.

The people that down and upvote comments are practically women. Cancerous subreddit.

[–]Meyright 22 points23 points24 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

No its not ok to discriminate between different groups of people! WTF?

And even if it were, it would not be an appropriate treatment, because women "rape" men in similarly rates as men rape women.

http://i.imgur.com/wBTDfe7.png That's from the Bureau of Justice Statistics a few years back.

https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2016/11/the-understudied-female-sexual-predator/503492/

[–]nuesuh -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Saying "WTF" isn't really an argument.

How does a man get "made to penetrate"? Are women drugging men with potent sedatives and giving them Viagra? Men are vastly superior at combat and can do serious damage to women.

Women certainly aren't innocent. They can be very vile creatures, and men can get raped.

But don't tell me that women are just as capable of raping men as men are of raping women, or that it happens as frequently.

I'm not saying this because I want pity for women. Women shouldn't have the right to vote or make decisions that overrule her husbands.

But if you genuinely think that men are at just as much risk of getting raped as women are, you live around, and probably are, a very weak and effeminate man.

🗣 FALSE EQUIVALENCY!

"The biggest way" is a nonsensical phrase, by the way. Do you mean "best way"? Simplest way? Whitest way? If the latter, then yes, the absolute Whitest way to approach this would be to use the example of black racial discrimination in an argument about white male discrimination. I'm calling you out: using black plight as a metric to indicate where white male plight might exist is Never Okay. Same for the kid who interrupts with "Jews were slaves too!" in colonial slavery class.

[+]mlUEusx points 9 years ago* [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link

I'm gonna have to ask some questions, because I'm afraid I don't really understand your comments.

FALSE QUIVALENCY

wasn't the point to exaggerate and thus show that it is both wrong, no matter to what degree? Even if we accept that he was trying to say that both were equivalent, Is he actually factually incorrect? I think most subscribers here would not agree, but I'm curious what case you would make.

Whitest way?

Can you explain what you mean by that exactly?

using black plight as a metric to indicate where white male plight might exist is Never Okay.

Why is that? Is it morally reprehensible, or does the argument not hold? If the former, would it be reprehensible, too, to compare any plight of any group of people, ethnic or otherwise, to any other, or only in the case of black plight and white male plight?

In reference to the latter, why are you referring to "white male plight"? I did not see /u/bsutansalt refer to white males, but you do. Why is that?

Lastly, you refer to a colonial slavery class. I'm afraid I don't understand how these situations are comparable given that we are in /r/MensRights discussing this, not in /r/BlackLivesMatter, so why is that a good comparison?

[–]buyingcoachtix 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

To exaggerate one concept for the purpose of making it appear as reprehensible as another concept is fraudulent. If you must exaggerate to get people to give a shit, you're stealing the merits of another argument and sidestepping the actual work of examining your own issue as it exists.

By whitest way I meant, it's very white of him to appropriate discrimination toward Black people as a way to garner sympathy for his white male self. "Didn't we learn racism is wrong! I'm suffering in the same way, with sexism!" It's using black discrimination that white men have caused and benefitted from as a caution against white discrimination. Lol, the audacity.

It's useless to compare levels of plight with respect to gender and race (and sexuality and country of origin, etc.).

I say white male because he said to imagine the cards were instead distinguished by race? I'm confused as to why you didn't notice the whole basis of my response was because he introduced race into this.

Because somewhere here is that guy that says "remember the Jews" in colonial slavery class and he needs to be checked for the same reasons.

[–]starkillerrx 13 points14 points15 points 9 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Makes more sense, too. Remember the racist lynch mobs of the past, "protecting" all white women from the black men who wanted to "rape" them?

[–]scyth3s 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah I remember. Those were good times.

[–]LoicyT -5 points-4 points-3 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

No I do not remember that. Never witnessed it. Not sure if it was a real problem or not.

[–]starkillerrx 21 points22 points23 points 9 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

I meant the ones in the 1800's to 1930's South. One of the most common accusations the KKK and other groups used to justify the lynchings were that those black men were raping white women (keep in mind that even consensual sex with a white lady would cause a rape accusation if you were black back in the day).

[–]WikiTextBot 8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Lynching in the United States

Lynching is the practice of murder by extrajudicial action. Lynchings in the United States rose in number after the American Civil War in the late 1800s, following the emancipation of slaves; they declined after 1930 but were recorded into the 1960s. Lynchings most frequently targeted African American men and women in the South. They were most frequent from 1890 to the 1920s, with a peak in 1892.

[+]blaktronium -10 points-9 points-8 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

That's only true if same likelihood exists between black and white theft as does between male and female rape. That's why it's a bad analogy. The two are not equally probable.

[–]Zepherite 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No. It's bad because it assumes all males are potential rapists just like assuming all blacks are potential thieves is bad. Liklihood is actually irrelevant. Not all blacks steal. Not all men rape. It's wrong.

[–]Meyright 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You're right. Women rape as often as men, or as feminists say it "made to penetrate"

http://i.imgur.com/wBTDfe7.png That's from the Bureau of Justice Statistics a few years back.

https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2016/11/the-understudied-female-sexual-predator/503492/

Where as black people are more often criminal in relation to the population as white people.

https://www.bjs.gov/content/pub/pdf/htus8008.pdf

So you're correct, the two are not equally probable.

According to some feminists, the "For Women" one is filled with victim blaming. 'A woman shouldn't have to worry about all those things. Teach men not to rape!'

[–]vegeta8300 71 points72 points73 points 9 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

Just as we teach people not to steal and murder. When someone gets robbed we don't blame them. It's still the thieves fault. But, that person who was robbed might have been able to prevent it by taking some precautions. The world is a fucked up place with fucked up people. These crimes will always happen in some form.

Basically these people are saying, " Don't tell me to lock my doors at night, teach people not to steal!" These feminists don't want to take any precautions. They'd rather be perpetual victims. The delusion they live with is astounding!

[–]BloodFartTheQueefer 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Next time someone gets a virus and another asks them what websites they were on screech at them not to victim blame

[–]throwawaylogic7 -3 points-2 points-1 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

But, that person who was robbed might have been able to prevent it by taking some precautions.

Ah man, wish you hadn't said that. That's victim blaming. The problem is that creates a culture of fear, most rapes are people who know you so populated doesn't matter, and the only culture we need to have is one that says "don't rape" and that isn't the culture we have right now. So any interest in anti-rape advocacy is already cut out for everyone. Enthusiastic consent should be on both cards, the legal definition of rape too, neither should victim blame or "pretend to talk pseudo-criminal mindsets down," let alone only the male one, and if you have to do the for women/men they should say the same things.

[–]vegeta8300 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That isn't victim blaming. I'm not condemning the person for not doing something. I'm just stating that there can be different outcomes in all situations. Again, the only person to blame for a crime is the person who commits it. That doesn't mean that if the victim didn't choose certain actions or woke up 5 mins early, and therefore became a victim. We don't blame them. No one can predict the future. Just as we lock our doors to maybe help prevent being robbed. Or we take precautions in all sorts of aspects of our lives. I don't see how being prepared, or being aware that our actions can affect our lives as victim blaming. It is nothing of the such.

Also, the vast majority of people do not need to be taught not to rape, or murder, etc. Humans have empathy. No one taught me not to rape someone. I've raped all the people I've wanted too, and that amount is none. I don't understand how this is so hard for people to understand.

I think it's more that people pretend that what the woman was wearing had anything to do with it. That's what makes women angriest about it.

[–]BulbasaurusThe7th 17 points18 points19 points 9 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

Woman here.
A strong, independent woman is just like a strong, independent man; doesn't make her life, health and safety depend on "but in an ideal world where everyone is nice, they will protect me", but does the thing she can reasonable do to make sure to minimise the risks.
You clothes, posture, attitude, etc. change your risk of being the victim of many things. This goes for rape, traffic accidents, Nigerian prince scams, everything.

I think it is perfectly fair to consider a bunch of different factors about you to reduce the risk of victimisation.

[–]vegeta8300 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I remember watching or reading something about the subtle signs that predators pick up on in prey to determine whether to attack or not. This applies to many situations. Whether it is a lion seeing which antelope to go after, to a rapist choosing a victim.

You mentioned posture, attitude, etc. Which are hints we give out as humans that others pick up on. Even if we don't know we are doing it. This doesn't just apply to rapists, murderers. But, in almost all our social interactions.

If I remember correctly, people who showed confidence, strong posture, dressed professionally, and many more factors actually does play a role in how predatory type people choose victims. Again, not just rape or murder, but taking advantage in business, etc. Even positive choices.

[–]BulbasaurusThe7th 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I have heard about the same thing. Aaaand yeah, I am facing a situation where I am being picked on at work by someone because I just gave off a certain air on the very first day. I work a lot, I work well, I learn fast, I do my absolute best, but because I am quiet and mousy... I get bullied by two people.

I'm quite sure Karen Staughan mentioned this, but I can be wrong.

[–]vegeta8300 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That sucks! There will always be those assholes who need to pick on others to feel better about their miserable selves. Especially if it's 2 against 1, they must really have issues.

I used to be picked on when I was a kid. People like bullies hone in on any perceived weakness or advantage against another. Even if it isn't even real. Bullies, like rapists, burglars , etc are always looking for the people they can exert their power (or lack thereof) over.

I wish you the best! Hopefully those assholes will leave you alone.

[–]killzon32 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I agree, but there is taking things to far. I don't think every black man is out to rob me and I don't go outside expecting to be robbed by a black man.

If a woman goes outside thinking every man is out to rape her then sadly the woman is delusional and needs therapy for much broader mental issues.

[–]BulbasaurusThe7th 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

God, I didn't say that. That's absolutely ridiculous. I just responded to the person who brought up the bullshit "but women are being told they got raped because they dressed like that", to which I explained how you ARE strong if you are in full knowledge of how to do whatever decreases the chance of you being a victim.

I didn't say all men should be treated super suspiciously, just that women should try to find our own safety in being responsible, in full knowledge of dangers, in our own strengths, etc. to a reasonable level. In my opinion the road to equality involves women not just counting on everyone being nice because woman.

[–]killzon32 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I was replying to the end of your comment about risk prevention.

[–]Taylor1391 -4 points-3 points-2 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

And what exactly do you think we should do to minimize those risks? Dress "modestly" like the religious freaks want? Walk around a submissive posture and attitude so the rapist won't think you're a challenge and therefore won't get a power trip from it?

Yes, these are straw men. I know they're straw men, that was intentional. But since I can assume you don't want that (no reasonable person would), what do you think are the right steps to take?

[–]BulbasaurusThe7th 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Actually, being submissive is the thing making you MORE likely to be victimised in any way. Apparently the best is not looking lost, obviously paying attention to your surroundings (like not lost in your phone, your attention not turning completely inwards, etc.), looking like you know what you are doing and where you're going, etc.

With clothes, you don't have to completely cover yourself, but you need to know that certain clothes will make you more of an ideal victim to predators. You can not change sick people. Rapists are not normal Joes who go completely crazy because you were dressed in a certain way, they are fucked up people who will NOT be considerate. They WILL look for weak spots. They WILL use those things against you.
You can say it's unfair that you have to consider it, but you don't harm rapists if you ignore, you harm yourself.

[–]Taylor1391 -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I actually remember hearing that rapists are more likely to go for conservatively dressed women than skimpily dressed ones. I'm on mobile so I can't find a source for that easily, all I can find is people's attitudes about victim blaming, nothing about clothing and who actually gets raped.

Honestly, I think the best defense against rapists would be a bunch of people deciding to conceal carry guns (where it's legal, of course). If a rapist knew there was a 50/50 chance their target is packing a weapon, I think they might find their self control making a comeback real quick.

[–]BulbasaurusThe7th 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I will be honest, I am 100% against telling my fellow women that we should not be careful. It sounds ridiculous. Almost like we are expected to be defenceless.
Equality to me is something that means I am going to stand up for myself as much as I can.

With guys, though, comes the fact that we need to teach people to be responsible. You can't just shoot someone because you FEEL uncomfortable.
First we need to be equal and honest when it comes to sexual assault and rape handling. Feminist fearmongering doesn't help with that. The constant try to broaden the definitions when it comes to men toward women doesn't help either.

[–]Taylor1391 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

We should absolutely be careful. But going out with your friends looking ridiculous because you feel like covering up will save you just seems like a paranoid and horrible way to live to me.

I also don't mean shooting someone because you're uncomfortable. I mean shooting someone if they assault you or attempt to rape you. Conceal carry permits come with mandatory gun safety class as far as I know, so we wouldn't have a bunch of people who don't know what to do with their gun. But if you're uncomfortable with guns, replace it with mace, tasers, or knives. My point being if someone knows there's a good chance you're carrying something that can really damage them if they give you a reason, they're less likely to give you a reason.

Believe me, I'm with you on the ridiculously broadening definitions. I've had drunk sex with my husband more times than I can count. He's never raped me. The person who did? Didn't use alcohol or drugs at all. So they're teaching all these women that anybody (male) who wants to fuck after taking a few shots is an evil rapist, and what does that do? It takes attention off the actual rapist. It's bad news for everyone. Well, everyone except rapists, that is.

[–]throwawaylogic7 -4 points-3 points-2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]armaadi 4 points5 points6 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Obviously, you should talk with a therapist first, but you need to vent to someone, I'll be more than happy to listen.

[–]Mister_Bloodvessel 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's very very hard to deal with in a... weird way. It becomes something very private that you can't tell people because they won't believe you or they'll kinda brush it off. It took me six years to tell my girlfriend of 8 years that I'd been raped by a woman. Luckily, she was a therapist by the time I told her, so she understood that this is a thing that does happen, and I was absolutely a victim. But the fact that I didn't feel like I could tell her out of fear that she wouldn't understand or something absolutely ate me alive for years.

We all process the trauma differently, so if you don't feel like talking about it, that's your right. It takes time and requires being in a very comfortable and safe space.

[–]L3tum 19 points20 points21 points 9 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Hey, if touching is sexual assault I can't even count the number of times I've been assaulted! But there is no number available in my country for someone like me, there's only a rape-hotline or pregnancy-hotline and I doubt they are for both genders, so what should I do?

[–]Triskerai 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Gender is a social construct now so you should call them and tell them that they can't tell you not to go to a women's shelter because gender isn't a biological difference, it's in your mind.

The fact is some women don't comprehend #10 from the men's list. The goal is to educate the public, and educating women about men's issues, and men about women's issues (kind of redundant, but hey, fair is fair) is a good idea... the list is virtually the same point for point, except for the forced perspective. Remove that and just put it out there. It doesn't matter if you are male or female, the following is true regardless; - Rape is bad, don't do it. - Protect yourself by knowing and thinking.
- Tell the authorities if it happens.

[–]throwawaylogic7 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Protect yourself by knowing and thinking.

Close to victim blaming, but I know what you mean. Trouble is how do you distill everything on good and bad relationships, and criminal law, onto a postcard meaningfully. On-top of that it has to not sound like "I told you so."

[–]Pseudonymble 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I was trying to boil down ... MOST of these points into what they really say, and this is how I chose to phrase 'use common sense', or 'be aware and act accordingly'.

But I think you uncovered a real point about the value of these cards. Can't we just have a campaign "Don't be a Dick". This covers bullying, theft, abuse, and doesn't get bogged down in gender issues. (Oh, Christ... the word 'Dick' could be problematic)....

Cherry picking indeed.

This is a big problem with Feminism. Throw out statistics not giving a shit where they come from, and create a big circle jerk of citations to cover your ass from ever needing a reliable source.

Citing a page from >2015 that cites YOUR information as coming from a study from 2000 based on 1996 data, does not make the information you are citing current, credible, and relevant.

Kind of hard to get accurate statistics when men get laughed out of a police station for reporting rape. Actually, I read somewhere that if a man reports spousal abuse he's more likely to get arrested than the woman (https://www.nationalparentsorganization.org/blog/3972-researcher-what-hap-3972). Wouldn't be surprised if similar things happened to men calling in rape. Something like:

man: "Hello, 911, I was raped."

woman: "No, he raped me"

police arrests man

[+]DancePartyTaco points 9 years ago [recovered] (2 children) | Copy Link

This is the response I expected.

Statistics = bull shit.

[–]DennistheDutchie 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Irony, thou name art u/DancePartyTaco.

But fine, let's delve into the statistics. Most victims are raped by people they know, friends and family (https://www.rainn.org/statistics/perpetrators-sexual-violence). So why are we handing out palmflets about rape at bars, on dates, etc? When that is the least likely cause? Why not make flyers that say: "When your mom touches you at night, report it to the police." or "Say no to brothers and fathers.", "Friends don't assaults friends."

But no. All men are rapists, and we need to teach men not to rape. We should also teach black people not to steal, because that's also statistics. I mean, the statistics could be caused by something systematic, or racist, but still...

That's. The. Statistics.

Do you understand me now? Do you get the point I'm trying to make? We have a saying in my field about reports that involve people. There's lies, damn lies, and then there's statistics. You have no clue how much influence you can have on the result by your method of sampling.

[–]Zepherite 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The statistics aren't 'bullshit' but an important part of reading statistics, and a skill that seems to be lacking in the world, is to understand, really understand, what was actually recorded and the conext in which it was recorded.

Those statistics are recording cases where people were convicted of rape. It does NOT record ALL cases of rape. In cases where people are convicted of rape, yes, it's usually a male.

But that only tells you that more men are CONVICTED of rape. It doesn't actuallly say whether there are more male rapists or not.

It is well known that women get no, reduced punishment or different convictions for THE SAME crimes. That already requires some more investigation. How many women get let off rape charges that wouldn't have done were they male?

Second, we live in a society that assumes men are the perpertrators and shames you for being 'weak' enough for being a victim.

How many male rape victims do you really think report what happened when you risk being jailed, shamed or at best ignored? How would those statistics change if we could find that out?

That's what you don't seem to understand. It's not the statistics, it's the way you interpret them.

For the record, I would imagine there are more male rapists but I would hazard a guess it's like the domestic violence statistics. Closer to 50:50 than most realise.

But at the end of the day, the message should not be: men, don't rape! It should just be: don't rape.

[–]ponchato 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Actually, men and women are raped at about the same rate; men slightly more.

The issue is that it's literally not considered "rape" when a man gets raped, but rather "other sexual assault".

So, no.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Since you're busting out stats, most people are raped by peple they know, not strangers.

So maybe, just maybe, instead of pretending you'll get raped around every corner, surround yourself with better people?

And using Rain is fucking retarded, they exclude the 2 biggest places rape happens with Americans, Jail and military, where the victims are overwhelmingly men.

Also, did you even look at the sources on that page? Why the fuck does a stat from 20 years ago need to be used now? Rain is overly selective on what info they use to frame numbers they way they want. Same way I could look at only jail and say what % of adults are raped. Then suddenly men are the massive victim and I can put my source at the bottom, all tiny and make sure it's grey and hard to notice. Fucking Rain, lol.

If you're a male victim of a sexual assault then seek help immediately.

Yeah from a psychologist... don't bother reporting it to the police or anything because you're statistically insignificant.

I hope this war of percentages ends one day so that we can all get told 'this is rape according to the law... if it happens then report it no matter who you are'. They didn't even get that part right! In the women's card point #1 they say sexual assault needs to involve touching. Point number 10 they then scare women into thinking men are gonna get off easily unless they follow strict reporting rules. What a farce...

I really wish colleges would put more effort into teaching women what consent actual is regardless of what their sorority sisters or Women's Studies professors tell them. Consent is agreeing to sex with the option to decline is available. A pamphlet like this for college women with points like these would be helpful:

  1. If you consent to sex while drunk, and you wouldn't have consented while sober, you haven't been raped unless you were so drunk that you were unable to decline.

  2. If you consent to sex and then change your mind, you haven't been raped if you never told your partner you were withdrawing your consent.

  3. Consent can be granted verbally or non-verbally. If you go along with sex and then regret that decision later, you haven't been raped simply because you didn't verbalize a "yes"

etc.

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points17 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

A class action, class suit, or representative action is a type of lawsuit where one of the parties is a group of people who are represented collectively by a member of that group. The class action originated in the United States and is still predominantly a U.S. phenomenon, but several European countries with civil law have made changes in recent years to allow consumer organizations to bring claims on behalf of consumers. I wish it got bigger, I want this to be seen for how shitty it is. I want to see some actual fuckin support from women saying this is wrong.

As a man Im horrified of being accused of rape. Im horrified to know that if i know a women, even just a little and something goes south they have an advantage in court to claim I raped them.

I want to be a child psychologist, a masters degree for the field takes 6 years. Imagine being accused of this shit and having all you worked for taken away from you for some bullshit reason and false accusations.

My reason for living is to help people and the world wont see me for who I am, but for what a single women falsly accuses me of, id loose my entire career and what I worked for. Its a living nightmare.

Im sorry, im just scarred.

Don't spend your life being scared dude, if you never rape anyone the chances of you being accused of it are very low. False rape allegations make up less than 2% of all rape allegations, and of them 80% don't make it to prosecution. The chances of this happening to an innocent person are more than a million to one (In the UK anyway, I don't have the numbers for the US but I'd imagine they are similar).

People reading this sub are naturally going to see every case that comes up* (a couple of hundred a year-ish) and in a country of 300 million people that's be roughly every day or so. Your exposure to the idea is amplified by dozens of people chipping in with their anecdotes in every thread. Unless you make the conscious effort to put it in context it's going to feel like there's some sort of epidemic** (note the press rarely, if ever, provide this context so it's on you).

Nightmarish though these crimes are you should be FAR more worried about the mundane crimes that don't get as much press. You are 21,000 times more likely to be the victim of a violent crime than a false rape prosecution. Even as a man you are several times more likely to BE raped than prosecuted falsely for rape. Not saying this type of crime isn't horrific but it behooves everyone to try and put it in context rather than completely losing their shit about it and talking like it's a common occurrence.

Youre right, its just concerning to me because it has already happened.

Crazy ex decided to claim I rapped her instead of being honest she wasnt a virgin to her new boyfriend. Im extremely thankful those claims went nowhere but it still happened. I just see shit like this and it bring me back to that moment. The same for that one article where there was someone who made several different men go to jail for just false accusations, I wish I could find the article but its here on reddit somehwere.

[–]emefluence 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah I think I know the one you're talking about, the trial is still in progress. - She made over a dozen allegedly false claims over the a couple of years and actually got one guy sentenced to 7 years. There are some pretty fucked up people in our society, some full on sociopaths and a lot of untreated mental illness. Sorry to hear you had a close call with one, I'm guessing quite a few people here have had similar brushes with crazy.

You have to be careful to keep half an eye on the stats with self selecting echo chambers like this though - nobody is deliberately setting out to skew people's perception of the relative frequencies of events such as false rape accusations but without some deliberate effort on the part of the reader it happens anyway.

Go well.

[–]Gawernator 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

There's no way to know how many claims are false or not. Even a conviction could be false. Only the people involved and God know. It's not like people have never been falsely convicted of murder. Innocents have even been executed. False claims could be 1% or 35% you don't know.

[–]emefluence 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I'm using the official British police figures but either way my point stands - compared to violent crime your chances of being falsely prosecuted for rape are fully 3 or 4 orders of magnitude lower. Unless you're dating a psycho it's not something you should be spending a lot of your time worrying about.

[–]Gawernator 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I wouldn't be that worried about it. Chicks that are crazy like that are usually pretty obvious

[–]handklap 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Whether or not you personally have a statistical likelihood of this happening to you is completely irrelevant. The pendulum has swing so far to the extreme on this issue. The criticism is valid and important.

Here's a perfect example: Innocent man spends 17 months in jail. Judge denies him bond. He is finally released only after his lawyers were able to prove his innocence.

http://www.wsbtv.com/news/local/gwinnett-county/man-falsely-accused-of-rape-freed-after-17-months-in-jail/529220139

We need to keep exposing the double standards in our judicial system and all the falsehoods repeated by the mainstream media.

[–]emefluence -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's entirely relevant to whether you ought to be worried about it.

[–]Gawernator 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

It's pretty simple dude. 1) don't stick your dick in crazy 2) avoid heavy alcohol use 3) don't slut shame/don't kiss and tell (this causes a majority of "regret rape") 4) send text messages or social media messages about how much fun you had etc so there's written proof between the two of you about consent etc

[–]rangerrump 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

It is not that simple. Ya, that all helps but it can still happen even if you just know them with no other interactions.

[–]Gawernator 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]handklap 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Expand on this for me. Next morning, dude turns into complete dickhead, dumps her the curb, she's angry and wants revenge, makes up rape charge, etc?

[–]Gawernator 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Chick is drunk at a party, has sex with a guy she wouldn't normally have sex with consensually, or for whatever reason. Word starts going around that Cindy is a slut and banged XYZ at the party. Her defense is claim she was raped, now she's not a slut. Not super uncommon. Revenge for a breakup or something is also possible ... remember the girl that just got charged with false official statements because she said two guys raped her in a bathroom? She didn't want to look like the slut she is to her new potential boyfriend so she cried rape. Also, it doesn't have to be the next morning. Some of these cases aren't claimed until weeks, months or years later when it's advantageous

It's sucks that the people who make these fail to acknowledge the HUGE (yuge for those of you reading in 2017) grey area that is a drunken college party. You're taking teenagers with hormones running wild in their system, adding total freedom for the first time (for most kids forming is the first time living without parents) AND alcohol which lowers inhibitions. Navigating that is NOT easy for either sex involved

[–]Ninjetik 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The 10th thing for men should be maybe... a number to call or the place to GO TO to get support and help for becoming a sexual assault victim? Not just a clearly transparent, 'oops I guess we'll be accused of being sexist if we don't admit men can be victims, lets throw this line in here so we're not accused!'

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Complete and utter misandry. Men should avoid these places like a plague. Go to trade schools, better yourselves individually.
Only go to college if you want to get a STEM degree or as a basis for a higher education (i.e. law school). Although I would recommend against law school in this day and age due to the outrageous cost. In any event, college campuses deny men due process, don't believe men can be raped, and will discriminate against men at any cost (particularly if you are white).

Yeah, I get the analogy and I'm generally sympathetic to the men's rights movement, but don't men perpetrate like 90% of all sexual assaults? It seems like it would be a bit silly to pretend that women are equally likely to perpetrate such a crime.

[–]bsutansalt 32 points33 points34 points 9 years ago* (3 children) | Copy Link

don't men perpetrate like 90% of all sexual assaults?

Nope. It's closer to 50/50 ever since rates of rape came down starting back in the 90s. 23% -- that's how much rates of rape have deceased between 1992 and 2014. Whether or not this is coincidence or causation with the advent of internet porn is still up to interpretation. Anyway, you rarely hear about this or the fact the stats get hidden by little tricks of the trade, statistical gerrymandering if you will, such as reclassifying sexual assault by women on men as "made to penetrate". Rape stats compared to MTP are almost identical. That's from the Bureau of Justice Statistics a few years back.

Similarly...

http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/politics/2014/09/woodland_hills_youth_development_center_the_dark_secret_of_juvenile_detention.html

Nine out of every 10 reporters of sexual abuse are males victimized by female staffers.

http://www.alternet.org/education/why-are-rates-sexual-abuse-juvenile-detention-facilities-rise

The report found that between 2007 and 2012, the rate of formal sex abuse allegations against guards and other staff in state juvenile justice facilities has doubled, even as the number of children entering those systems has dropped.

I find that latter statement interesting in light people beginning to ask the question of whether or not the seemingly increasing rate of female teachers statutorily raping their students is actually rising, or if it's just a case of more getting reported on more frequently? The rates of kids in prisons being abused going up, despite the number of kids in custody going down could tell us the answer to that teacher question.

Last thing before I go to bed: The term "rape culture" was originally coined in the 70s in reference to prison rape. It was only later that feminists co-opted the term to refer to society at large, which in contrast to prison rape and some 3rd world nations would be down right laughable if it weren't so insulting to those who are mired in real rape cultures.

[–]snarky- 10 points11 points12 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Those 90%+ stats (at least the ones I've seen) are for rape, and by defining rape as penetration only. For example, here in UK it's not rape if a woman has sex with a man against his consent.

As far as I understand it, the <10% female perpetrators are those who have penetrated with fingers or toys against consent.

Men are defined out of victimhood, and women are defined out of perpetration.

[+]TheCheesy points 9 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

Thanks to feminists, for it to be considered rape, it needs vaginal or anal penetration. It has been redefined to further an agenda.

[–]bufedad 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

However, empirical statistical evidence does show a significant higher average for male offenders of sexual assault on college campuses and that age demographic.

Actually, it doesn't. It's just that we've made a concerted effort to ignore male victims. Hence why male victims of female rapists aren't classified as rape victims, but "made to penetrate".

In fact, in some remaining states, and most first world countries, rape is a crime that only men can commit (UK for instance).

Yes, generally speaking it is men that rape, and women that get raped. That's because there are biological differences between the sexes.

The cards don't say anything outrageous (for instance they don't say "if you've had even one drink you can't have consensual sex.")

The tips for men seem pretty reasonable. Don't fuck a passed out chick. Don't fuck a stranger in the ass. Etc.

You know - you "men's rights" guys have to be careful about not turning into what you are fighting. To me anyone that is upset about the advice on these cards is essentially get offended over a microaggression. Do you need a safe space?

I don't really think we can equate this to issues of race.... The top comment in particular is pretty juvenile. These cards aren't infringing on your rights or even discriminating against you, they're just good things to keep in mind. "Don't assume that your date wants to have sex even if you have before" is pretty good advice for a horny young college guy. Stop taking this like you're being persecuted. Everybody experiences some judgment based on the unchangeable facts of who they are and how they look, we can try to fight prejudice and actual discrimination but judgment can only be expected and talked about.

I'm going to play devil's advocate and point out that a lot of those things are useful to know, and, in my opinion, some of the women's list is just fear mongering, and doesn't apply to us.

The men's list reads more like a "how to avoid crazy women that will falsely accuse you of rape" list imo. Or how to avoid the timid women who have no agency and report you after their friend later convinces them it was rape.

There should be equality, but men and women are different. We experience different hardships. Our lists for avoiding sexual assault SHOULD be different, because predators of male and female persuasion approach it differently.

So I'm not against unique lists for each gender. I'm only against the presupposition that men are likely to be predators, and that's not what I'm getting from this list. What I'm getting is that men need a clear understanding of where a woman may feel consent was not given, and, to be honest, knowing how to protect myself by being aware of her affirmative consent is important.

It's important for women too, though, so a lot of the suggestions on these pages could really be given to the other sex too. I guess I'll just end by pointing out that they acknowledge males can be victims, and they only had ten bullet points to use for their awareness campaign. It could have been worse.

I'd be willing to bet that most of the guys on here are willing to cite black on black crime as a reason that police brutality isn't such an issue but absolutely can't help themselves from getting into a frenzy when males being sexually assaulted isn't regarded as as big of a deal as women being sexually assaulted.

When you attempt to strawman and accidentally end up proving your opponent's point.

And in what way do you think I did that?

I'm not a fairy snowflake, but this seems legit. Men do tend to penetrate women and I've never been raped by a woman no matter how hard I've tried. JK

Is this a quote? It feels like a quote

Women rape men at similar rates as men rape women. This is per the CDC.

Although, they can't call women forcing a man to have sex rape, they call it made to penetrate.
