"Toxic masculinity" is the idea that men are raised to violently dominate and subordinate women. It used to be called "hegemonic masculinity."

What that idea ignores is that men are not raised to be violent and aggressive. They are raised to be valiant, strong, and protective of those weaker than themselves.

People who tout toxic masculinity point to men committing more violent crimes. If you get shot in a random act of violence, it is true that the shooter will likely be male. However, the people working to stop that shooter will also likely be male. If someone pulls you out of a burning building, or saves you from a flood, that person will also likely be male.

"Toxic masculinity" looks at the bad things men do more often than women and says "toxic!" Bring up the great things men do more often than women, and they will ignore you or try to shout you down or call you a sexist.

So, what you're saying is that any aspect of masculinity that women don't like is toxic and that masculinity (men) needs to change to suit women, unless men do only-and-precisely what women want.

I think men understand all too well, especially if men would state that any aspect of femininity that men dont like is toxic and that women need to change to suit men, unless women do only-and-precisely what men want.

Then men could enlist the assistance of Communist change agents, big business, media and government to facilitate the change, making quotas, rules, policies and laws to give men more rights than women - to the detriment of women, the nuclear family and society - with financial, societal, emotional and familial incentives to make men feel better about being men.

This modern day Communism is what we fight against. It's tearing apart the very fabric of western society.

If you look at the comments to these types of circlejerk posts, you don't find Hardline MRA's, but jokes and often blatant sexism against women

I think what a lot of it is is "Me too"-ism and some sense of belonging. And TBH I can't find it in me to blame many blokes for wanting to be "in" on something, even if it's only an online forum: after all, it can be pretty bloody rough out there, and this sub is one of those places where blokes can come and get a little support. Godnose there aren't that many, and I think most here can indulge us when we need to blow off some steam. Consequently, there will be a lot of rubbish posting and commentary: I ignore most of it, and I imagine many do likewise.

But this post got under my skin for some reason. And no, I am by no means any sort of "hardline" MRA - I'm not even sure I qualify as MRA, but then again I dislike labels.

I'm going to disagree and say images and messages like this are important.

While low effort, it is important for men and boys to realize being a masculine man is good. Being strong capable and helping those who need it is manly. Men, manly, and masculine traits should be something to be proud of.

So much of our messaging to boys is toxic masculinity, all men a rapists or other negative stereotypes of men. Some positive messaging about male positive aspects are needed.

Strength, capability and helping others are aspects that should be actively reinforced to our boys and men. Being a masculine, manly man is a good attribute.

Active role models such as the one posted should be aspired to, we should lead our boys by example and provide examples for them. In my boys schooling i see female role models 30X more often than male.

Look at sally the fire-woman, girls be like her.....boys sit down in the corner and stop goofing off.

Again this is all we hear about in regards to masculinity. Never messages about positive masculinity.

Mens rights are huge advocates about the demands placed on men to always suppress emotion. What society expects of men is harmful and is reflected in the lack of support and even ridicule the mens right movement encounters.

I also disagree strongly that devaluation of women is at all masculine. Devaluing anyone is terrible and reflects poorly on the one who does.

Domination is a positive aspect taken to far. Being confident and able to take charge are positive aspects. But one needs to work with others. Dominating is not masculine but a behavior taken to far. The message by tying the domination behavior to masculinity is that your a man, you should feel bad, go back to your corner and shut up. Any attempt to contribute will be shut down because your toxic masculinity.

The concept of toxic masculinity is used to harm men, not to help them.

Whether decent people would or would not do the same is irrelevant. Women are not expected to do the same, and gender roles are one of expectation and general fitness for purpose. I am sure this is represented in the ranks of whatever organization is behind the rescue efforts pictured.

I believe it is good to frame these acts in the light of these accusations, because the accusations of toxic masculinity and male privilege are fundamentally ignorant of what the role of masculinity is. None of this is a surprise to any regular reader of this sub. We see a constant stream of examples of feminists acting out their extreme hatred of men. We don't expect anything different.

You see very specific examples from very niche feminist groups that are far from common. I can count on one hand how many people I've met who are feminist and who have these views you talk about... and I've worked with hundreds of feminists.

This subreddit is so often just an outrage/drama bases subreddit. People find the worst shit they can and post it... which is fine except so many people think this is the most common shit. This shit is super rare...

Let me tell you what's really going on: feminists are actively working to make things worse for men.

Every attempt to move child custody towards a default assumption of equally shared parenting when there are no issues of abuse by either parent, has been vehemently opposed in the USA by NOW, the largest feminist organisation in the world.
Feminists created the Duluth Model for dealing with domestic violence and succeeded in having it made standard operating procedure for police forces around the world. The Duluth model teaches that domestic violence is caused by “patriarchy” and always committed by men against women. Police are taught that the man is always at fault and should be arrested, then removed from his home. As a result, when men call police to report being victims of DV by their female partners, the most likely outcome is that police will arrest them rather than the woman who is abusing them.
Every attempt to set up men’s issues groups on university campuses has been bitterly opposed by feminist groups, and in almost every case feminists have succeeded in preventing the groups from being established. Feminists are completely unmoved by the academic failure or even suicide of boys and young men; their desire to cling to power and maintain a monopoly on dealing with gendered problems (meaning only women's problems) is far more important to them.
Every attempt to organise public talks on issues such as male suicide faces protests, sometimes violent protests, by feminists seeking to prevent the talk from going ahead.
Every conference on men’s issues faces feminist attempts to prevent it going ahead, including violent protests and, in one case, bomb threats.
Feminists even try to stop every screening of the Red Pill documentary, the only documentary ever made on the men’s rights movement. Here in Australia, every screening was protested by feminists. In many cases they succeeded in getting the cinemas to cancel screenings through a combination of hysterics, pressure and lies.

More ambitious feminists push to eliminate the punishment of female criminals entirely. Not content with a criminal justice system which treats women so leniently at every step in the process that, if men were treated equally leniently there would be 84% fewer men in jail today, these feminists argue that women's prisons should all be closed and that women should never be jailed no matter what their crime, because reasons.
Scroll through this sub for a while and notice that every single week it highlights dozens of anti-male articles written by feminists and published in mainstream publications. Every week feminists, via the media, tell the world that they think men are violent, rapists, stupid, evil, oppressors, "over", pedophiles and an endless variety of other forms of demonisation.

So tell me: what, other than hatred, could motivate the adherents of a quasi-religious ideology like feminism to wage such a war on half the population?

The bitter, hate-filled, asshole feminists are giving the other 5% of feminists a bad name and they feel hard done by? Well, boo hoo. If they don't like being lumped in with the vast majority then that should tell them it's past time to renounce the ideology and become egalitarians instead.

OK, I'm bored with this. I've scanned all the uses of masculinity in that thread, but I'm done with copying them across.

When we look at the comments actually made by feminists, around half the time that masculinity is mentioned it's "toxic masculinity", around a quarter of the time it's used in another context that is negative towards masculinity and in the last quarter of the time it's a neutral use of the word.

There were zero cases where feminists referred to masculinity in a positive way.

This is a public discussion in a non-feminist forum, thus feminists are more likely to be on their best behaviour in this situation because they're trying to sell their ideology to others, or at least defend it from criticism. When feminists are only talking with other feminists, all references to men are substantially more negative than this.

So I'd say that pretty much proves my point. Thanks for the link to the post.

You were talking specifically about the term "toxic" being applied to "masculinity," and you claimed that it was fair to say feminists "almost never" talk about masculinity without the word "toxic" in front of it. If you had found 1 or 0 cases of where "toxic" wasn't used in a set of 20 counts of the word "masculinity," then that would support your claim.

You tried to move the goalposts to "feminists talking negatively about masculinity," but I wouldn't disagree that they do that, and never would have cited that post for you to see that they don't talk negatively about it, because they do. Any objective reader of our conversation would see that I have disproven your point (or, rather, that you did, as much as you wanted to believe you had proven it).

I'll go through each video. But no I won't attack you personally, you're entitled to your views as am I. I don't live in the US, so your politics and society don't apply to me.

With game of thrones, the start is not "femisim" at all, Arya went through a huge story arc to get to the place she is, not only that but she was always fighting and learning with the other soliders as a child. This is not "femisim" it's merely equal opportunity, one that should be encouraged. Both men and women should be able to do what they enjoy, in this case ayrya enjoyed horse riding and sword fighting. Whilst Sansa her sister enjoyed knitting (embroidery), books and looking "fabulous".

The little girl standing up, again is a new lord of the north, only given to her because everyone else in her family was murdered or died in battle. She like everyone else in that room has the right to defend the northern realm? As well as all the boys, girls etc etc. That's not pushing a femisim agenda either... They're not taking anything away from men or boys by training women to fight as well.

As with Sansa and Jon snow, she's trying to give him advise because Jon Snow is a stubborn oathkeeper. Their individual characteristics lead them to that plot, and she's not asking him to listen to her because she's a woman, or that she should. She's asking him to listen because she's been through everything he's now going to face, her story arc and knowledge of the captial, the politics surrounding courts, and most importantly the events that lead to her father's death.

None of these are cases of feminism, because they all have valid and explainable reasons for happening, or achieving those specific scenes. None of them are out in "purely because they're a woman". No one can believe that if they'd seen the whole story. Picking pieces out here and there with no context of the setting or history makes no sense.

It's like climate denies using 1 report out of thousands because it happens to show some favourable numbers.

The reasons women are in power in game of thrones again lends to the story. Cersei, literally everyone died, all her children died, her husband died (at her hand). She's basically the only one left to rule that seat.

Dani went through hell to get to where she is, including losing her child, her husband, thousands of her supporters and now one of her other children (dragon).

The point is, you can't take a few scenes from game of thrones and believe it to pushing an agenda, every character has a story arc that's completely individual.

Both men and women in the show are protrayed in all kinds of different ways, there is everything in it. It's hard to imagine why anyone would believe them, or G.R.R.Martin is pushing an agenda, as remember these come from an epic series of books. It's not "hollywood" making this show up.

All things considered, movie representation is a rather small issue, but the biases nonetheless exist. For a more serious context, I suggest the publication "Effacing the Male: Gender, Misrepresentation, and Exclusion in the Kosovo War". You've removed this point out of context from the argument it was making. Men are almost exclusively cast as the heroes... compared to women. Not compared to men being cast in other roles. Context matters a lot in arguments.

You could argue the same with children, they're more likely to be killed and kill than women in reality, just look at the volume of American school shootings, child soldiers in Africa etc etc. Those are rarely depicted in films, but you don't hear anyone moaning about that shit.

Amazons died on the beach.
They're depicted as heroic because of their story. Which was written in the 1940s, nothing to do with the new age feminism agenda. Simply an interesting and different story, compared to the rest of the stories being told about superheroes at that time.
Being depicted as heroes for the sake of story doesn't make them any less expendable on screen or in the story. Only 3-4 of the hundreds of Amazons actually matter. I believe a few of the amazons died in that sequence (that might not be enough to appease you, but they're meant to be warriors trained from a young age and very very hard to kill).

300 comes to mind. 300 men (all white... which made zero sense because of where they were in the world) fighting invaders, all but 3-4 of them completely expendable, but only a handful die until they're betrayed.

Fundamentally, Marx viewed the endstate as being a classless society. As such, the idea of "equality" - like the idea of "rights" - would theoretically become antiquated and illogical in a communist society. Rights and 'equality' only exist within a class society. Later when Influences such as the Frankfurt school expended upon Marxism and instituted cultural Marxism express aim to infiltrate and attempt to destroy from within by marrying to then over exploiting the liberal idea of "equality" with ideological warfare tactics such as 'critical theory"; (racist, sexist, homophobic, privilege,toxic masculinity, misogynist, bigot etc etc), as we see happening currently.

We even see it in the very title of this very thread itself.

So, I was watching LivePD a couple of weeks ago. 2 Police officers (one male/one female) were attempting to arrest an average sized black male. Black male resisted. Shoved the female officer down and punched the male officer in the face. After being shoved down, the female officer made no further attempt to subdue the assailant. She sat there on her ass. She was out of the game. By contrast, after being punched in the face, the male officer went into overdrive and subdued and handcuffed the suspect himself, all while yelling at the female officer to provide assistance--which she did not do. That female officer had no business being on the street. I hold this opinion not because I hate women, but rather because her presence jeopardizes the safety of other officers who are trying to do their jobs and keep the peace. What if the suspect had've escaped and disarmed her after shoving her? We would have seen 2 officers get shot and maybe killed on live TV. Men and women are different. They are different physically and mentally. If you don't believe me, just watch toddler boys and girls play. Anyone who tries to peddle the bullshit that the sexes are the same are deluding themselves.

You all are the saddest group of people I've ever come across . This guy is an actual man, he is taking action to help others who cant help themselves simply becuase it's the right thing to do. He's not standing there thinking, "But why isn't she helping me, it's so unfair!" He's helping a mother and a child who are in danger. Hey, you must be new to the scene. You're not wrong, but maybe I can help explain things from our perspective more.

First of all, you should know that this sub doesn't really complain a whole lot about "not being allowed to have emotions or be weak." In fact, just below your comment, some asshole who hasn't learned how to reddit yet is telling /u/audible_dog_fart that he's a pussy for hiding behind the anonymous internet and not traveling across the world to say shit to his face like it's still 2004. And he's upvoted.

Anyway, not that that isn't a problem, it's just that this sub tends to focus on institutional issues, like inequalities in established law, sexism in the workplace, whatever. The other sub is the sub that talks more about social issues.

Second, you need to understand why we MRAs sometimes don't like the term "toxic masculinity." It's not because the effect that the term describes isn't real. In feminism, they talk about how society pressures people into restrictive gender roles. It's the same thing, exact same thing. However, they don't call it "toxic femininity."

Feminism is smart in the way that they've focused on changing society, not the individual. Feminist terminology reflects that in a lot of ways. "Toxic masculinity" goes back on that though. It seems to imply that men are at fault, not society.

Hey, you must be new to the scene. You're not wrong, but maybe I can help explain things from our perspective more.

First of all, you should know that this sub doesn't really complain a whole lot about "not being allowed to have emotions or be weak." In fact, just below your comment, some asshole who hasn't learned how to reddit yet is telling /u/audible_dog_fart that he's a pussy for hiding behind the anonymous internet and not traveling across the world to say shit to his face like it's still 2004. And he's upvoted.

Anyway, not that that isn't a problem, it's just that this sub tends to focus on institutional issues, like inequalities in established law, sexism in the workplace, whatever. /r/menslib is the sub that talks more about social issues.

Second, you need to understand why we MRAs sometimes don't like the term "toxic masculinity." It's not because the effect that the term describes isn't real. In feminism, they talk about how society pressures people into restrictive gender roles. It's the same thing, exact same thing. However, they don't call it "toxic femininity."

Feminism is smart in the way that they've focused on changing society, not the individual. Feminist terminology reflects that in a lot of ways. "Toxic masculinity" goes back on that though. It seems to imply that men are at fault, not society.

It's pedantic, but there's really no reason to be calling it something different for men than for women.
