Let's not forget Roberta Williams, one of the most important video game designers ever to walk this god forsaken earth. She likes boobs, and dick jokes, and has a fierce working knowledge of classical literature. Simple, she's everything that the fakers and complainers of today are too shallow to be. She didn't wait around for someone to invite her in. She and her husband Ken founded their company, Sierra On-Line. Masters of the craft.
edit: I often realize just how much Roberta Williams played a role in my love for the mythologies and folklore of different cultures. It all started with King's Quest.

Her interviews with Matt Chatt were pretty fantastic, some of the best. (They're on YouTube, if anyone loves video games and doesn't know what Matt Chatt is, you're missing out).
Matt brightens my day for an hour a week or so and makes me think there are some good people left in the world to look up to.

I bet those posers all hate her.
[–]giegerwasright 12 points13 points14 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
No. They don't even know her name. That's their problem.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
They don't bother to know her name. If they discovered there were successful women out there they wouldn't have an argument. I have never met a wildly successful woman who blamed a certain sex for their failures. Not.a.single.one. The powerful women I've met consistently look for quality and competence over everything else. I have however, met plenty of unmotivated people getting nowhere in their careers who go to feminist rallies on the weekends.
[–]giegerwasright 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
If they acknowledged her, they could go on about how she's a victim of her svengali husband. Fools. They ignore an opportunity.
[–]duglock 4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It all started with King's Quest.
When I hear people complaining about the gaming tropes it makes me want to go look under a rock.
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 12 years ago* (4 children) | Copy Link
She's a woman I severely respect in the gaming industry.
When you have people like Anita, Felicia Day, Hamburg- Jennifer Hepler, and the like it REALLY paints women in the gaming industry in a bad light.
Edit:
Felicia Day was nifty when she was doing The Guild, after that she went on to "Vaginal Fantasy" or whatever, and really started stretching the "cute/awkward redhead" trope she's coined. I don't feel she brings anything to the table when it comes to the gaming industry, pretty face and that's about it.

I'm pretty sure men weren't looked down on by women or teased for participating in "Olympics, games of skill, board games, games of chance, gambling, sports betting, video horse races..." thousands of years ago.
[–]downloadacar 19 points20 points21 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I guess you're unfamiliar with the well known Roman video horse races started by Tiberius Claudius Nero, a widely recognized videophile.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Men weren't teased for going into the Olympics, originally, because women weren't allowed to watch.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
The Big Bang Theory shudders changed all of that, or at least was a milestone in the "Omg so geeky xD" shift in a subculture.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I think it was more of a sign that it had changed. Popular culture doesn't create anything, it simply displays what is already there. As can be seen by their portrayal of geekdom in the show. They are still ridiculed and shamed for their geekiness, it's simply accepted as an unavoidable part of life now. But I'll stop before I start a rant about that fuck'n show.

Can I just say that gamers being mocked for being gamers is not a uniquely female pursuit. It has to do with popular culture, stereotyping and the idea that it's an unproductive pursuit in a society that requires productive behaviour. That may be wrong or right - but has nothing to do with men's rights.. social equality for gamers maybe.
[–]mwilke 8 points9 points10 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Right. This graphic would work just as well if you substituted "jocks" for "women" and changed all the references to CoD and FIFA.
[–]soldierofwellthearmy 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Yup. Of course, judging gamers on how hardcore they are is kind of, well - a jocky thing to do.

2013 - "A man beat me in MMO, that's technicly rape"
[–][deleted] 12 points13 points14 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I played WoW for about 6-8 years.
I can't TELL you how many times a rather slutty (usually Canadian, weird) gal got loot preference because she was showing her goods to the officers/GM (I saw them, too).
And in the public chat channels people worshiped her, and thought she was a wit.
[–]SaigaFan 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
We had a total of 6 girls in and out of our raiding parties. All but one of them got booted for being entitled bitches. One though was a very very good druid healer.

[–][deleted] 47 points48 points49 points 12 years ago (15 children) | Copy Link

[–]SovereignsUnknown 13 points14 points15 points 12 years ago (13 children) | Copy Link
depending on the game, i don't think that's gonna help. sure, give some female Dark Souls player an automatic 99 vitality. that's not going to save you at ALL in PVP. then they'll complain that skill-based games are the patriarchy

They already have. In one of her videos Anita Sarkeesian said that most games are too difficult for women, and this is another sign of sexism in the industry.
Because that's not an insult to women at all.

ninja edit: to be fair, Dark Souls/Demon's Souls/Monster Hunter/ect. are too hard for the majority of people, not just women. my genitals have no bearing on how many times i get killed by Capra

I beat the game, got stomped on the second playthrough.
Me and my two friends put 175 hours into a character and we didn't even beat the game.
[–]guywithaccount 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Uh, what the hell. You can lure them out pretty easily, AND they're easy as hell to kill in an open space. The Capra in the lower town is a killer because you basically have to fight him inside a closet with two or three dogs biting your ass constantly.
[–]SovereignsUnknown 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
when you're in the demon ruins for the first time and you don't realize that they're there/there's multiple of them, they get you pretty badly. you're right though, they ARE much easier out in the open.
[–]guywithaccount 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Oh, you know what, I've mixed them up. The guys you see half a mile away on the lava plain are Taurus Demons (or something). The three Capras come later. But still, you can see them all long before they attack. If you've gotten that far in the game and you manage to blunder into them all at once, you deserve what you get. ;)

Games are focusing on male skills because male dev teams made them, because patriarchy ran women out of the programming industry, with their sexist remarks. The government needs to regulate gaming industry, to make sure 50% of developers are female. We need to stomp out oppression at the root!

I know there was one on the day z forum, or whatever the mod for arma 2 was. It's actually pretty dumb, but not surprising though I think it's more because someone was losing at a video game and no body likes that. Though it doesn't hurt that people feel like it's perfectly acceptable to use "feminism"(mainly because a lot of "feminist theory" is set up just for these situations.) to shame men, or actually people in general.

Not anywhere near us, that's for sure. Usually hanging out at the mall or at home on the phone to their girlfriends (no World Wide Web back then).

Rubbish. It took off well before 1995. We were already having the equivalent of today's "Console wars" with the Spectrum and the C64 et al by the early 80s. C&VG magazine launched in 1981! Hell, the Atari 2600 hit the scene in 1977.
Get off my lawn.

True gaming existed before the mid 90's, but that's when the internet truly become a thing and gaming took full advantage of it, that's when females became aware of video games in mass.
[–]KalChoedan 19 points20 points21 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Again, that's absolute rubbish. Of course the rise of the internet had a big impact, but gaming - and female awareness of it - was in full swing well before the mid-90s. I know, I was bloody well there.

[–][deleted] 61 points62 points63 points 12 years ago (32 children) | Copy Link
This is a huge generalization, there are plenty of females who play video games. My sister has played since the NES, same as me (but I'm a dude), and my mom plays every single platforming/adventure style game for the nintendo systems, I ended up just giving her my wii because she played it so much. A few girls I dated were gamers before it was "cool" (so hipster right).
I get it though, it is a male dominated space and it feels like women are barging into it and trying to take control. Feminists are trying to get people to make games the way they want, but I have yet to see a (good) game developed by a feminist. All they do is whine, and the real developers tell them to fuck off. If the developer is willing to compromise his/her game to satisfy a few feminists, the game isn't worth playing anyway (I'm looking at you EA).
[–]hugolp 43 points44 points45 points 12 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
There is absolutely zero problems with girls going into gaming. There is absolutely zero problems with gaming culture cattering more to girls because their increased presence. Hell, most gamers would love to have more girls around.
But what gamers dont want is the histeria, the guilt trips, the attention seeking antics and in general the drama of power-hungry feminists.
There is a big difference.

[–]hugolp 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
If more females get interested in gaming, yes, oc they can. Thats the point of what I said.
[–]ClickclickClever 18 points19 points20 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I get that you might know a lot of females that play video games but that really hasn't been the norm until recently. I think this post makes the mistake of singling out females as calling gamers losers because in reality it was most people that weren't part of the culture calling gamers losers. It was a "nerd" thing or whatever other label you want to give it and seen as very uncool. Similar to how things like DnD is still seen as(though even that is getting more accepted) and LARPs are definitely seen like that still by mainstream society.
Anyway, there were way less females that were part of the gaming culture which is what OP is trying to point out. Yes there were some and yes it's a generalization but it doesn't imply that all females everywhere were like that. Some were part of the culture, hell some were major game designers, but that doesn't seem to matter to "modern feminist gamers" or whatever you would call them. Most of the arguments they use could be used about any medium and are quite frankly quite flat and one sided, easily refuted but it's become a fad to criticize video games from a "feminist" perspective and it has a lot of unfortunate consequences. With "feminism" holding the only voice is mainstream gender debates, a lot of people looking to seem "progressive" or something like that are going to follow the ideology and think they're making better games for it, when in reality they're only limiting their creativity to cater to a market that frankly doesn't give two shits about ideologies.. A lot of people, and a lot of companies are always fearful of looking un-P.C. and it's going to lead to a few shitty games but I doubt it'll take hold because again, limiting creativity is not how you create great games, or great anything for that matter. Frankly it's just annoying to get shamed by these people and the fact that they're taken even remotely serious is just ignorant. They add nothing except their desperate need to spread their ideology so that they can forever live in an echo chamber.
The extra sad thing is, no one cares about having a female protagonist. The arguments they make are so shallow and weak, demonstrably proven wrong but this is what happens when something hold a monopoly on public opinion. By their standards games like Mirror's Edge, Portal, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, KOTOR, and a thousand other games just either don't exist or aren't important, or somehow don't count because in Mario bro's you save a princess. Honestly, no one cares if the protagonist is a female, if you can make a good game then guess what, people will play and buy it. Love it. It's just so dumb, the ignorance these people get away with is mind boggling and I think that's what bugs people the most, just the fact that not only are they wrong but they are so unbelievably wrong.
When you create a society where being against an ideology makes you a bigot, even when that ideology is demonstably wrong, then you end up with stuff like this. It's shame tactics, even though I believe in equality for women, and openly fight for women's rights, the rights for equality for all people, just because I do not accept all the other bullshit that is thrown at me and can admit that men aren't the cause of everyone's problems, and even have problems themselves. Because of that, I am a bigot and part of a hate group. The fact that society let's that exists is beyond me, but people in general are too scared to step away from the heard to care and openly mock things they know nothing about. Most people that talk shit about the MRM would be beyond surprised if they actually stopped and read the stuff we're against. That's why things like "Father's Rights" do slightly better with the mainstream, because everyone knows that men get the shit end of the stick in family court, it's known. Just like it's known that if the police get called in a DV, even if you called them and got the shit beat out of you, chances are the female will not get arrested and there is a good chance the male will. If people actually learned for themselves, and researched for themselves and had the courage to stand up and say "No I will not accept these lies, I will think for myself, I will help people, all people and because of that I am a good person." then the MRM would be openly accepted and it would help get "feminism" honest. Monopolies don't die easy though, and I doubt "feminism" ever will, nor am I sure it should. Honestly if we could only keep them truthful and in reality, than "feminism" would be an amazing thing.
I digress though, I rambled on way too much and I'm sorry for the wall of text. I hope you understand a little better that of course some females played video games and loved the culture. Society as a whole didn't and of that, much less women were accepting than men. Now we have an ideology trying to spread itself through lies and logical fallacies because feels and it's hurting a medium by curbing creativity, which is never a good thing.

I'm a gamer from childhood and I have lady parts - and I do appreciate playing a female protagonist. I also enjoy playing sneaky skinny guys and old gnomes and hideous ogres.
I get a little tired of the standard female tropes: the magic-caster is a sorceress with her tits hanging out, the female sidekick is a "strong female" who doesn't need no help from anyone, until she does... Etc.
But I'm not tired of it because I'm offended. I just want more variety in the characters I play. I'm sure a lot of men feel the same way. Even today, probably 75% of big-budget games feature a guy who's super ripped and handsome and smart but, you know, he's down on his luck and even his grizzled good looks and five-o-clock shadow and Batman voice aren't enough to get the girl... Blah, blah, blah. Boring.

True, but i don't think this post was meant to target all females. Sure there is female gamers who are real gamers but you can't deny that in the last couple of years the amount of girls who does it only to get attention has skyrocketed.

I'm curious as to how you know they only do it for attention?
When was the last time a guy posted a picture of himself semi-nude next to his gaming console?
That's how.
How does that in any way mean girl gamers are playing games for attention? For that matter what makes you think that a girl taking a picture with a controller obscuring her nipples wasn't doing it as part of a modeling shoot, as a gift for an SO, or anything other than to get guy gamers attention?
For a group of people who spout about being socially awkward a whole lot guy gamers sure seem to be exceptionally confident that any girl playing a game is doing it to get their attention.
"Oh this girl was in pictures wearing glasses and holding a game boy while naked, she just does it for attention, therefore all girls who say they're gamers do it for attention."
Sound logic. Also:
Some men are violent rapists, therefore all men are violent rapists.
I mean honestly guys, grow up.

Preconceptions and suppositions galore, so let's have a little context :
you can't deny that in the last couple of years the amount of girls who does it only to get attention has skyrocketed. how you know they only do it for attention?
you can't deny that in the last couple of years the amount of girls who does it only to get attention has skyrocketed.
how you know they only do it for attention?
Because the girls doing it only to get attention post semi-nude pictures of themselves in "gamer mode".
It's not rocket science.
"Please, sir, would you mind getting off that horse? It's awfully high and you might hurt yourself."
I'm curious as to how you don't.
[–]nosajx7 -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
My guess is that the assumption for the attention-seekers is that they say they play games to get guys to talk to them, then when they're asked if they want to play, they never want to? I can't say I've ever seen this before. If they're playing online with us, they're clearly playing the game. Maybe it's the girls that try to get free stuff, since some people with too many items will gladly give them up anyway, especially to a girl. The point is, in both of these cases, I don't see a problem. First case: she lied and a guy fell for it, and they spent time together and hopefully learned something from each other. Second case: giving up items is voluntary. You don't like someone spamming chat asking for items? I'm pretty sure every game I've seen has blocking capabilities.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
It comes from girls on MMOs who do nothing but talk about personal drama over Vent and accept every handout every desperate male is willing to give them. It comes from "girl gamers" that take pictures of controllers covering their unclothed breasts but they're never seen actually holding the controllers. It comes from situations where girls make damn sure you know they're girls when it has absolutely nothing to do with what you're talking about or the game you're playing at the time.
Whenever a guy gets ranty about girls in games, these are the girls he's probably talking about. They add nothing to any community they're part of, they get on the nerves of everyone who isn't trying to get into their pants (men and women alike), and half the time they barely know how to play the damn game.
The problem with statements like the one that spawned this string of comments is that it's impossible to talk about this stuff without context, and the broader a statement can be applied, the more useless it is.
Just for that first tidbit, if a girl is playing an MMO how is she not a girl gamer? Do you define gamer as a person who treats video games like a secondary career? The people who play world of Warcraft and min-max and do research?
There are plenty of people who use WoW and games like it as little more than a social club. There's nothing wrong with that, but it's ridiculous when those people expect to get by in raids or PVP without learning the mechanics or how their class works, and that's very different from quote unquote "making it a career." This is particularly true with streamlined MMOs like WoW where the game functions on a very specific set of principles that are relatively uncomplicated despite how the interface makes things appear.
Keep in mind, at no point did I say in that previous post that girl gamers should be shunned because they are girls or judged because they're not hardcore players, but rather that women who are there for nothing more than attention and drama ruin everybody's experience, and it's quite clear who they are in those contexts. I don't know why you seem to think I'm saying girls on MMOs can't be real gamers unless they're the hardest of the hardcore; you're extrapolating something from my post that would be hard to infer unless you're dead set on reading it that way, and it's little more than a red herring.

Yeah that picture is NOT representative. It is if you are a 25yo who had your head burred in the sand until shit started popping up on reddit, which you just recently joined.
People have been talking about the objectification in videogames sense the 90's, that I'm aware of. So that picture is at minimum a decade off. And my sister has been a gamer sense 1992. Yeah I gamed harder but she was really into them. My stepsister in 1998 would play WAY more zelda and mario cart then I would. I used to have to fight with my stepmom for who got to use the computer to play games. One of my friends in middleschool was a girl and she poned my face in Goldeneye. Women have been playing games as long as they have been around, the men just identified themselves by the fact that they played videogames, for longer. As it is, there are almost no girls under 22 that dont play some videogames, and there is a huge presence of women who are actually hard core gamers. Half of the people in my sisters raiding guild are women. They are all in their upper 20's to early 30's. It's not a female focused guild, it's just gamers who came together to raid.
The women in this category are Used to the boys club. It's familiar and comfortable to them. They are desensitized to the treatment they endure. When people speak up saying "we want to be represented as the market force we are, and all we want is to have less objectification present. Tone down the over-the-top aspects. They are viewed as crazies and fringe, because most of the women are desensitized.
You're totally right, developers ignore and trivialize these people. They throw their worst people at the projects and come up with garbage. All it would take is to just take a look at their story and say "how am I portraying this, that might be going to far," and they could turn regular games into feminist friendly games that everyone would still enjoy.

There's a rumor that they hired Anita as a consultant, meaning Mirror's Edge 2 might get nerfed, but I think that's a hoax.
I'd really hate to see a game with a female protagonist that was pretty good (although love-it-or-hate-it) get damaged due to over-PC, especially when it was already good on the racial and gender axes to begin with.

[–]haharae -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
I agree with pretty much all you said, but I think the last sentence has some exceptions. Borderlands 2 is an unfortunate example, where the writer is a spineless radical feminist toy who practically worships Anita Sarkeesian. I've seen several of his twitter posts where he feels guilty for accidentally having a hint of one of Anita's "tropes" in his game and where he informs some transgender fan that he plans to try to incorporate a transgender character into what he writes next (I don't have a problem with transgender characters, but trying to incorporate to please the whiners pisses me off).
But yeah, since EA/Bioware have been more oriented on trying to appeal to the radical feminist crowd rather than trying to write a decent story, I think their quality has drastically declined.

In defense of this post, I think the message is supposed to be this:
The gamer culture, which has existed since the 1970s, has largely been male-dominated. Even if there were some girls playing games back then, they were a very small minority. Gaming has only recently become mainstream among girls. It's absurd that these late-arrivals get to steer the direction of the industry.
Imagine you and your buddies are having a house party. You've cleaned the place up, strung lights out in the yard, you've made food, everyone's chipped in for soda and booze and ice, you've rented a bitching sound system, the party's going great and everyone's having fun. Then a girl shows up three hours late and demands that her iPod be plugged in to the stereo because she doesn't like your music. GTFO, right?
[–]radeky 7 points8 points9 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
People talk about the gaming industry like its just one big singular company with one mission and goal. That its a single party everyone is at. Which is simply not true.
There are sports games, fps, mmo, rpg. Strategy, puzzlers, etc. You can't "steer" an industry like that.
And while I'm not speaking for the stupid idiots who think that just because a game they dont like exists, that they're somehow marginalized as a result...
There is nothing wrong with the idea that a consumer group stands up and says "hey, we want something different". Because it goes both ways. Just because they want a game created that you dont want, doesn't mean theyre taking anything from you.
[–]bl1y 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Sure, some people are saying "We'd like it if games were made to appeal to us!" and that happens. There's long been games like The Sims, and now tons of casual games. But, there's also feminists saying they don't just want a wider range of games, but want the woman-friendly games to replace the other games.

In a hypothetical feminist dystopia, the first two would still exist. "Sexy" female leads are something that the vast majority of female gamers like. They wouldn't disappear. They'd just be used as a stick with which to beat innocent men over the head. Wait, did I say 'hypothetical'?

Where were you during the Dragon's Crown fiasco?
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
That's just the loudest feminists rumbling to shake things up.
I can tell you right now, as someone who has frequented the online roleplaying scene for over a decade: Women are interested in hyper-sexy characters as a power fantasy.
I can guarantee you right now that if you go into an erotic roleplaying community right now, a number of women playing female characters are going to be playing super-sexualized females with impossibly exaggerated parts, who want to be involved in scenarios where men become "impossibly jealous and obsessed", to the point of violence and rape.
This is different from men, who generally play characters that fit under the descriptor of 'awesome' or 'badass' in some way as their power fantasies.
[–]crazedanimal 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
No I'm pretty sure it was the entirety of western gaming press and almost all female fans. If there are so many female fans who enjoy sexy female characters why do they have virtually no online presence and fail to call out the loudest feminists who claim to speak for them?
Sexual online roleplaying is a pretty niche thing and I don't think you can discern the opinions of most female gamers from women who engage in it. Furthermore I don't think you can extrapolate a person's opinions on what is acceptable in a non-pornographic game from their taste in porn. I don't think you can even extrapolate a person's opinions on what is acceptable in porn from their taste in porn. I've seen female artists go so far as to go on ridiculous rants about how evil any sexual fiction involving non-consent is and then turn around and draw lesbian/gay rape without even understanding the hypocrisy.
If something seems like it's meant to sexually appeal to straight men then it's probably going to attract the ire of feminists and by extension the female gamer community and by extension all mainstream gaming websites.
[–]guywithaccount 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Note that the participants in "an erotic roleplaying community" are self-selected for having a strong interest in sex... either generally, or as a roleplaying theme/element. So hypersexualization is going to be seen more there than in the general population.
Having said that, I agree that being able to manipulate men with sex is a power fantasy for many women, and that sort of allure is part of the female gender ideal.
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Under a rock it seems, but I'll cast a guess that it was a few loud feminists rather than a lot of female gamers.

That's not what they want though. They just want something to scream about.
This is true. They would treat the sexy characters as empowering (you go, grrrl!), and then accuse us of being sexist for finding their sexy characters sexy.
better hope they've instituted communism by then, because if there is a free market left the video game industry will collapse. i'm not going to pay money to experience a feminist reality.

She could bring down the difficulty just to pass the boss and have the pleasure of killing it herself. But I knew as many boys as girls my age that played when I was a child. I really think some kind of self-post actually articulating the point the image is trying to make would have been much better. The very idea of men's rights is incomprehensible to some people; it simply has not occurred to some that we might face discrimination. If we are to make progress, those minds are the ones that need to be changed and an image like this seems childish and comes off as we're getting mad that women are involved in video games now (I know that wasn't the intention of the image but it wouldn't be hard for it to be interpreted that way).

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Pretty funny, but not a hundred percent accurate. I remember the "I'm a grrrrrrrl gamer!" stuff back in 2001. All-female counter-strike clans began to pop up. Their websites had completely pink lay-outs, and the clan-members pictures were everywhere. They even linked to an amazon wishlist in the sidebar.
It started with women who wanted to take advantage of the nerdy guys, by making them buy stuff for them. When we, the gaming community, called them out on it they just sort of disappeared. That's pretty sinister.
Of course we had plenty of female gamers who didn't give a shit. There were semi-professional counter-strike players, who happened to be female, who were legitimate CS players in their own right and could kick your ass any day and didn't apologize for it. We made sure they got the respect they deserved.
[–]intrepiddemise 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I think you just hit on something that is often missed in these debates: earning respect. Gamers, like any other group, can often be very insular and distrustful of newcomers, and this was very true up until the 2000s.
If a person came in and tended to abide by the rules and gained respect in the community through skill or hard work, they'd be accepted into the community as an equal. If they came in trying to change things to fit their particular taste without ever putting in the time and hard work needed to be called "skilled" or failed to respect the social norms of the group, they'd get booted out on their asses. That's not just gamers; that's ANY group.
It's really about mutual respect. Respect the community, practice and earn your place amongst our ranks just like everyone else. You're not special because you're a girl. You're only special in the gaming community because you're good at the game and you're willing to work with others. Assuming that people should cater to you because you're a girl is chauvinism, plain and simple.
[–]Fearandir 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I agree that no newcomer should barge in and expect his demands to be listened to.
But there is a problem now in a few online gaming communities, with harassment that begins as soon as it is revealed that you are female. And some gamers treat them differently for being women. Even if they are good and even if they are good team workers. So I think that may have build resentment.
[–]intrepiddemise 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
If you're playing with anonymous young children (and many of these online communities are full of them now), you're going to have to deal with abuse, regardless of who you are and where you come from. If you speak over Ventrillo with an Arabic or Persian accent, you'll be called a "terrorist". If you speak with an Australian accent or have a speech impediment, or volunteer information like your religion or political views over the in-game comm, you'll be attacked for that, as well. It comes with the territory.
Females tend to have higher voices, so it's easier to recognize them and attack them on that front. Kids are jackasses; you're going to get harassed by someone, no matter what you do. It isn't female-specific. Thinking that it IS only females that get this kind of harassment during online play is to be oblivious of human nature and the nature of the modern gaming community.

I know a lot of girl gamers and they don't care about the sexualization of women in games. It seems that the feminists are the ones who whine about it and complain and it has done nothing to stop designers from doing what they have always done. In fact the women I play with in MMO's tend to be the ones that dress the most provocatively in game. I know of all my friends who play the only ones that buy the in game clothes for their characters seem to be women. You have to remember the feminists who cry about this stuff are a very small collection of very vocal women. The thing is they talk loud and as a result they drown out what the rest of the women gamers and they could care less what those women say or think. It seems that this small and vocal feminist group feel they need to decide what's best for the rest of women out there.
This is not about men's rights. It's about women hating. Sorry.

Well, if you have realised that women have more rights in certain areas and less in others - while taking away certain rights from men in the process - you can be both, but calling it both a feminist and a men's rights advocate is really just saying you're a gender equalist.
[–]AwesomezGuy 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

If someone thinks that way, they could certainly identify as a feminist, and if by their actions they demonstrate concern for men's rights, I'd believe them to be that, but they wouldn't need to say they're MRAs, they'd just show it. If someone has to say they're also an MRA, they're not really an MRA.
[–]stoudman 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link
There's a difference between feminism and misandry. Feminism supports the idea of equality among the genders, not of one gender over the other. Men's rights activists don't hate women, they don't consider themselves better than women, they consider themselves the equals of women. It's that simple, really. The fact that you think otherwise is quite troubling.
[–]anonlymouse -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
Feminism ostensibly supports it, but I wouldn't say feminism, the meme that exists today, actually does so.
[–]stoudman 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
The manner in which some people choose to use/see the term feminism is of little importance; what matters is what the term actually means and what it stands for. It makes perfect sense for someone who has an irrational hatred of a certain group of people (in this case, men) to use a more friendly term to describe their feelings in some vain attempt to placate their own desire to be able to accept their viewpoint as morally correct. In reality, their misuse of the term is only further proof that their are morally corrupt.
[–]anonlymouse 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
Feminism started out as a movement for the benefit of upper class white women, it only later developed into a socialist movement that was supposed to be about equality. If anyone corrupted the term, it's the egalitarians.
[–]stoudman -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
That's a fascinating opinion you've got there, but unfortunately it can't exactly be substantiated by facts. There are certainly historical viewpoints which support such an opinion, but sadly it is still just that. My, my...you sure do have to distort reality quite a bit in order to maintain moral superiority. Oh, sorry...that was just my opinion.
[–]anonlymouse 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
It can definitely be substantiated by facts. Prominent early feminists were actively opposed to blacks getting the vote. They weren't an equality movement to begin with.
[–]stoudman 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
By that logic, one could also point out that the founding fathers of the United States, despite producing the constitution, were often slave owners themselves. Just because the originator of an idea is flawed doesn't mean that the idea itself is flawed. You're relying on a bit of a fallacy here. Great, some early feminists were racist; so what? So they were hypocritical? Does that somehow demean the value of their ideas of equality? If we had thought that way about the words of the Constitution or the Bill of Rights, the civil rights movement never would have been possible. Whether or not someone fully understands the importance of their words or ideas, if those words and ideas hold within them an ultimate truth, their value will become known eventually.
[–]anonlymouse 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
They were clearly anti-equality and they were not clearly pro-equality. They were only clearly pro-(rich white)-women. Equality was only explicitly added later.

Yeah, it's crazy.
Feminism believes in Patriarchy theory, which says that the Patriarchy is a social construct (possibly created and perpetuated by men, depending who you ask) that creates a male-dominated gender hierarchy that oppresses women. It's Man-Hating 101, which is obviously incompatible with equality or the MRM.
Patriarchy theory isn't just some weird radical offshoot; it's the theoretical basis of all feminism. You have to accept it to be feminist, in the same sense that you have to believe in Jesus to be a Christian. If you don't agree with Patriarchy theory, you shouldn't call yourself a feminist.
false
[–]guywithaccount0 points 12 years ago* [recovered] (7 children) | Copy Link
As someone who doesn't care what offends you, I don't care that you're offended.
Also, Feminism and the MRM are mutually exclusive because of Patriarchy theory.
[–]stoudman -2 points-1 points0 points 12 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
That's not true. You're talking about a term that doesn't even exist outside of the internet in any legitimate works whatsoever. It may be true that Misandry and Feminism are mutually exclusive, but being an advocate for both feminism and men's rights is not impossible. Just as feminism is about the equality of women to men, men's rights is about the equality of men to women. To suggest otherwise is ridiculous.
[–]guywithaccount -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Feminism opposes the MRM. You can't support two things when one opposes the other, because by supporting the first you harm the second.
[–]stoudman -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
False.
Once more allow me to explain.
Feminism advocates for equal rights among the sexes.
Men's Rights advocates for equal rights among the sexes.
How do these two oppose each other, exactly?
[–]guywithaccount1 points 12 years ago [recovered] (3 children) | Copy Link
No it doesn't. It imagines that men oppress women. The so-called "equality" feminism advocates for is one where men are burdened with limitations and scorn while women are given special treatment to make sure that they "really can have it all" and don't have to suffer hurt feelings - the social equivalent of adjusting the balance on a scale while your finger is holding down one of the pans.
Those so-called "feminists" who say they want real equality need to stop calling themselves feminists when they're really egalitarians, and stop insisting that feminism is the way forward when they've clearly rejected it.
[–]stoudman 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I believe you are mistaking Feminism with Misandry. Misandry is hatred of men and the idea that women deserve special treatment over men. Feminism is about bringing equal rights to both women and men.
From Dictionary.com:
fem·i·nism [fem-uh-niz-uhm] noun 1. the doctrine advocating social, political, and all other rights of women equal to those of men.
Feminism is about bringing equal rights to both women and men.
This is getting tedious. I've already explained that this is false and why, yet you persist in repeating the same bullshit over and over.
From Dictionary.com
Dictionaries are descriptive, not prescriptive. It's not the lexicographer's job to determine what a word really means, merely to record the sense in which the word is used. In this case, he's just repeating feminism's claims about itself, which do not match the reality.
Anyway, when someone tries to trot out a dictionary definition to win an argument about what feminism really is, it just shows they've lost the argument and have nothing else to fall back on. I'm done with you.
[–]stoudman -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
HAH! HAHAHAHAHAHA!
This wasn't even an argument. I simply informed you of the meaning of the terms "feminism" and "misandry." You seemed to be confused, so I was trying to help you understand. We have words for each idea and what you are describing is obviously misandry.
You've explained to me why you think it is false, but in th face of logic your ideas do not hold up. It's not my fault if your ideas are patently absurd. The very idea that using the exact definition of a word to explain its meaning is somehow "bullshit" is equally absurd.
At this point, your "argument" sounds more like that of a troll than anything legitimate. I'm glad you're "done with me," because when you have to make up some excuse to try and be right about something in the face of actual FACTS, that's just sad.
You're not talking about feminism, you're talking about misandry. Sure, many people who hate men consider themselves feminists, but they are mistaken; they are not feminists and they do not speak for feminists, they speak for MISANDRY. To say that a few confused people who think they are feminists are the only ones who truly speak for feminists and feminism and therefore the meaning of the phrase has completely changed is absolutely ridiculous.
You're confusing phrases. That's all. There's no need to get upset about it and try to make other people feel small just because you refuse to see the logical truth for what it actually is.
By the way, I'm going to C&P your final comment here all over social media. It's just that hilarious. Thank you.

This is obviously a dramatization to some extent, but to be honest, it still happens to me. Just yesterday actually, I started up a school fighting game club, we were all sitting there playing smash bros with like 25 people, and this one girl came up and was making fun of us. I told her to eat shit and she got all butthurt and kept making snide ass remarks. Another girl was giggling at how cute "us guys were", because we were invested in the game. Sad fact is, at least 10 of our 40 members signed are girls. This is kind of a rant, but it seems relevant. Pisses me off

In my country majority of women still consider video games as something childish. Many of women find these flash, java etc. games in browser and enjoy those, then they find a little game like Angry Birds on their mobile device and then thy waste their time on these foolish games. It frustrates me to see them not recognizing serious AAA games as something actually worth time spending on. I always am going to say this: A good game is like a good book or a good movie.

[–]ZimbaZumba 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Priceless. Loved it.
The entire video game industry was founded, developed and adopted largely by males. They are the ones that took the risks socially, professionally, economically and personally to develop something new. Women by and large(and most of the dominant culture in fact) first ignored it. Then when it didn't go away, shamed and mocked it specifically because the people involved were rejected from the dominant culture already. But it remained until now when video games are an accepted part of the dominant culture. So it is NOW that women, girls and all those others who mocked and shamed it before are joining in, because now it's safe to do so.
Video games probably have the same history of development that numerous other pieces of our culture have had. I simply think women have a different relationship with risk and culture than men do so they are overly represented in the late adopter class just as most who adhere to the dominant cultural norms is.

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points21 points 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
I don't think this image is suggesting girls can't be real gamers. I think its response to a recent wave of feminists criticising gaming as biased towards male gamers. The point being made here is that for most of the history of video games, it was a hobby that was looked down upon as enjoyed only the loser nerd man-child. It's not that women were socially excluded from gaming, but more that women disliked it as much as most men.
[–]Mitthrawnuruodo1337 7 points8 points9 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Right, it is currently male dominated because only a few females even cared at all until a few years ago. That's just not enough time for the industry to change to accommodate the new market, but feminists use this to insult men and yak about "the patriarchy."
I do think we sometimes overemphasize the one aspect though. Gamer girls have always existed (albeit in smaller numbers than gamer men, people who deny that are just being silly), and they were ostracized often times even worse than the nerdy men. Also, the few girls I know who have been gamers for longer than a couple of years never are the ones who have problems with the game industry as a whole the way the new feminist gamers do.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I can't speak for the OP, but it's not a gendered issue, it's an attention whore issue.
For a long while, us gamers were an abused sub-culture. We were outcasts to the social norm, not because we wanted to be, but because our form of entertainment was new, seemed socially awkward and to some older generations was alienating. This left us demonized by our parents' generation and ostracized by the socialites of our own generation. We scraped through a whole cycle of abuse, humiliation and fear mongering.
Then the sub-culture managed to climb it's way out of the outskirts and gained popularity in the main stream. It was no longer the social pariah that it once was. Then the attention whores attacked. They latched on and tried to manipulate the sub-culture for their own pleasure.
Many of these people happened to be women of various sub-groups of their own. Some used their sexuality as a tool to garner attention in the sub-culture. To many people, this seemed like an insult and an afront to it. The fear existed that they would sully the still shaky reputation of the culture. They were treated harshly, like you would to a leech that you found suckered onto your belly.
Some came into the form of social critics and feminist advocates. They now are the most common attention whores, attempting to derail any conversation or major event in the gaming culture and use it as a tool to gain attention to their message (and ultimately themselves.) Again, they are reacted to harshly, because the threat feels very real that the entertainment gamers' love could be influenced and diluted by an invasionary force that has no real dog in the race.
Of all these examples though, the issue has never been about the hipster mantra of "I was there before it was cool" or the fact that the attention whores which threaten to undermine the sub-culture are women. Instead it has everything to do with the (possibly valid) fear of many that these "invaders" will somehow harm the shaky foundation that has just barely nudged it from the fringe of demonization to general acceptance.
